  • Letter from marine XO:
As the Company XO (Executive Officer) for India Company, 3rd Battalion Marines, I deployed as an advanced party to Ramadi in January '06. Our company was stationed at Camp Blue Diamond, and our Battalion Command Operations Center (COC) was Hurricane Point. We established OP’s including Horea, Hawk and others. The battle of Ramadi was underway. We established good working relationships with local civilian leadership figures (sheiks) in the first part of our deployment. We worked to gain their trust and cooperation and had regular meetings.
In the middle of our deployment we were told that US SOF (Special Operations Forces) were operating in our area. We cooperated with Delta and operated with them - they showed complete professionalism and we worked together on securing the Ramadi Hospital. There was another group of SOF in our area - they were SEALs from Task Unit Bruiser. They were extremely unprofessional and consistently broke ROE’s / SOP’s (Rules of Engagement/Standard Operating Procedures) not announcing their presence arriving and/or departing our AO’s (Area of Operation) posing great risk of blue on blue [fratricide/friendly fire] scenarios.
I talked to Task Unit Bruiser’s lieutenant directly about it and was completely disrespected and ignored. Kilo Company held ground near the Government Center. It was an active area and they had OP’s (Observation Post’s) set up to beef up security. The Kilo Company XO warned myself and other leaders at our Command Operations Center that Kilo Company had been in the neighborhood East of the Government Center and witnessed the SEALs kill an elderly man doing yard work - raking rocks - and upon searching the scene and finding him unarmed, the SEALs rolled his body up in a rug and threw it over the wall around his property.
We were informed of this as a warning and told to be ready for the local retaliation. We knew this would have repercussions. Immediately following this we lost a Marine in 3rd Platoon who was shot in the head on what was supposed to be a normal patrol at the time. Direct and indirect fire [IDF] saw a surge, and the intel reporting on our WIA/KIA (Wounded in Action/Killed in Action) confirmed this.
The local sheiks immediately refused to meet with us and told us that more retaliations for the killing of an innocent were coming. All of our crucial relationships we had developed with the local Iraqi civilians in our area were destroyed - and given the enemy that we were fighting - developing relationships was a mission critical task.
We saw an immediate increase in IED’s (Improvised Explosive Devices) and had to change tactics, logistics, and all movements. We could no longer foot patrol our area while the SEALs were in our AO. It became too dangerous. We could only establish and monitor OP’s for ambush and IED setups.
Our translators continued to seek information from the locals and tried to get leadership to meet with us- they confirmed that this was a response/ retaliation to the killing of an innocent elderly man. All of our Company leadership compared intel and tried to put the pieces together for a solution.
We all knew of Task Unit Bruiser - with their signature Punisher skull patches - was causing mayhem in the area. They were gut-shooting women from their firing position of the hospital, killing unarmed Iraqis, and not cooperating with US Forces on the ground to deconflict the battlespace.
It was obvious that they were not only directed to act in the manner which they did, but were also protected by their leadership, because the combined leadership of 3-8 & other local units were reporting Bruiser’s wild and wanton acts of violence to their own chain of command, as they were resulting in Marines getting killed in retribution attacks. But our reports fell on deaf ears.
We lost 36 Marines. The vast majority of those losses were only in the middle months of deployment when Task Unit Bruiser was present.
Years later, after trying desperately to put all this behind me I was asked if I knew who any of those individuals were - I was shown a picture of them. Little did I know that this group that had created so much havoc had become famous. I pointed out their Lieutenant immediately as the one (that I had talked to in order to rectify this problem, and he would not cooperate) I had words with trying to get cooperation from them. That person was Leif Babin.
I had deployed previously in 2004 for to Haiti, and 2005 to Iraq, and worked with SEALs previously. They were outstanding. The unprofessionalism displayed and violations of ROEs I saw from Task Unit Bruiser was startling and extremely concerning especially given the deadly cost to US Forces.

You act like this is some kind of recent phenomenon that only SEALs do. It's definitely not. Veterans have been writing books about their experiences for a very, very long time. SEALs, Green Berets, Delta Force operators, Rangers, and regular old grunts, have all been writing books for a long time. Soldiers have been documenting their experiences for literally thousands of years. There are hundreds and hundreds books written by veterans of WW1 & WW2 alone. There are hundreds more written by Vietnam veterans. This isn't a new thing, nor is it anything that should be shamed or condemned. There are alot of veterans who want to tell their story, and there are alot of people who enjoy reading about it. All that "BUD/s hAs a CrEaTiVe wRiTiNg cOuRsE" stuff is ridiculous. SEALs represent an incredibly small percentage of combat veterans who have written books. It's not a new thing, and it's not a bad thing. Not to mention you think that this clown isn't writing any books? You think that he isn't cashing in on his military career and his experiences? You think he's not trying his best to become rich and famous and known for something, and using his career as a SEAL to lend himself credibility?

These are a great critique of the SEALs from their founding to the GWOT generation. Bottomline - look at all the people (former Army SOF, USAF SOF, civilian authors, etc) criticizing/correcting SEAL accounts of 'famous' battles/operations or infamous events; there is no other unit more heavily scrutinized. By all their accounts I tend to not believe the SEAL accounts as truly accurate, and the SEALs are the authors of their own mystique but are by far the ‘most professional’ SOF unit or Tier-1 unit they believe they are.

@markphelt6395 To your point, there are problems all over. But the fact is that these are very pronounced in the SEAL community. But, I believe that a lot of the good SEALs are trying to right the ship. Many of the toxic SEALs are likely retired or retiring. Heck, you hardly hear much out of MARSOC or the Ranger Regiment, though - I guarantee - they also have their bad apples. But look at it this way: There are just under 2,500 Navy SEALs, but far more of the Army's SOF and yet we keep hearing of these issues with NSW, to the point that the SEAL leadership a couple of years ago had a address it publicly. That tells us all we need to know about their "corporate culture", if you will.

It wasn’t a SEAL that Mike Monsur saved in the middle of the street under fire. It was GySgt William Gibson (5th ANGLICO). I was on the deployment. I was sent to there location to pull those ANGLICO teams out of there by our CO. Mike Monsur died from jumping on a grenade for us. There was some good things we did on that deployment but there was a lot of dumb shit we did. I say we as in some (not all of the NSW guys and some of the ANGLICO teams working with that NSW team). Some of the ANGLICO Marines drank the koolaid of the NSW guys. Stone was a warrior but followed the orders he was given. I witness the daylight insertion of teams in Fallujah. Let’s just saw we had to exfil quick because that went to shit once one of the NSW got a grenade tossed at him in the infil.

What advice would you give for women that want to be SEALs? If you had to go to BUD/S again, how would you prepare differently? What books or workout programs would you recommend?
Most female SEAL candidates struggle with carrying the boats and logs, doing pull ups, having grip strength and completing the “Dirty Name” on the obstacle course. Also, a lot of female SEAL candidates break their legs or develop stress fractures.

Being regular navy for 7 years prior to the teams speaks volumes. Possessing maturity prior to BUDS is a huge issue. That by itself speaks volumes. I’m by no means an operator and technically I’m just a janitor. But I got to know UDT/SEAL members from the first frogmen. I Saw a shift in the teams starting in the mid 90’s. The comment I made about 7 years in the fleet is common in the other branches. The humble professionals I remember were usually prior fleet/service. Sadly the political ideology of big navy has crept into the teams. This retired SEAL being interviewed is of the caliber that I remember from the 60’s-80’s. Great video, thank you for sharing this.

When Eric said how a former BUDs instructor drowned a student when the instructor himself was not even qualified to drown proof test anybody reminds me of how 1 of my NCOs and how he treated me back in 2015.
I was in Italy in HHC BDE Level in the CUOPS in the S-3 in the 173RD as a RTO.
My section was told to go do pool PT.
My NCO SGT Facklam led the PT session.
He wanted us to dive in the deep end of the indoor pool on Caserma Del Din Gym for bricks.
We did this for a few rounds.
We then tread water for a few minutes with the brick and threw it back down to the bottom for the next guy to grab and then tread water with until everybody had done it at least once.
I saw my opportunity to go down and get the brick next.
As I did my NCO SGT Facklam went for it as well and I beat him to it.
I swam up and began to tread water and then came over SGT Facklam and told me let’s do some survival water training.
He then proceeded to mount on my back as I trusted him as my leader and then put me into a rear naked choke while I can barely manage to tread water with my own body weight which I then did much worse of course after having mounted his 200 Lbs on my back and was choking me while I was gasping for air and swallowing water almost dying and everybody watched him do it to me and said nothing in my defense.
    They reported nothing.
I told the leadership and nothing happened.
I told my fellow soldiers whom told other leaders in our WLC class and still nothing happened.
    No justice.
I will NEVER again trust anybody with my safety and well being.
I will from now report straight to the highest command without ceasing until justice is served and all those responsible are held accountable.
It is not just the SEAL Teams it is everywhere.

This was during the counter sniper operations in and around Sarajevo. We could hardly ever get them to go out on missions. Then one of them didn’t clear his Sig pistol prior to starting to clean it and shot one of our guys in the chest. Luckily one of our medics was right there and saved him. I don’t think anything ever happened to that SEAL. The shipped the whole team out and they were not replaced. Each squad had a saw gunner my brother was the saw gunner. I think this was due to him being my close friend but his squad leader took his bolt leaving him incapable of even defending himself or us his fellow soldiers in a TIC. We even came under attack once and we tried like hell for them to give him his bolt back. Fortunately we survived but I think about to this day imagine if things did get worse and he was found dead without his bolt. @@Anonymous18817I mean, if you’d take advice from a Ranger, for selections, high reps of calisthenics and shit tons of cardio. Additionally, probably a heavy hike maybe 2-3x a week. Since it’s SEAL training, you should probably be swimming just as much if not more. It’s not… a lot of complicated stuff, just. A lot.
Simplicity can be difficult. All you have to do is keep going. Considering your limitations (no judgement, that’s just the case,) you’re gonna have a long way to go. I wish you luck.
Here’s a list of movements that I think helped me:
      Squat
      Deadlift
Lunges (replicates walking up a mountain, do lots of these)
Push ups and lots of variations of push ups (you have to. It’s the nature of SOF, push ups are on all of your tests)
Sit ups (same Idea, all your tests)
Pull ups (you mentioned trouble with these, try using a band to support yourself and also a Lat pull down machine)
      Overhead press (logs/boats)
High reps in all of this, then either run/swim or hike, pretty much every day. Start where you need to, not where you think you should be. Work your way up and do more over time. If you need to, spend years doing this before you go.

I can tell from Chris Kyle's body language during an interview with a church pastor. His giggling and avoiding the pastor's eye to eye contact, and with lack of emotions of the lost of lives, whether they're enemies or friendlies, tells me that something is not in line with the truth. At one interview, he suddenly switch the subject by bringing up Carlos Hathcock (White Feather, a sniper legend of my era )as the greatest sniper ever lived.

So this looks like a political smear. You should know seals are the bottom of the pecking order. Army/USMC runs everything. They work for them. We’ve seen marine 05s remove seal platoons from the battle space. Even 0-4s initiated it. So my first question is. Why did they not fire them? I’ve seen multiple units get removed from the AO or battle space completely. over speculation that turned out the guys were 90miles away in the other direction so they clearly didn’t do the infraction. . So it’s very questionable being this guy could’ve got them kicked out immediately. Any army/USMC officer could’ve initiated it. So now I’m asking why did they allow it? Did they like seeing the handy work? It’s very strange.

Over 58,000 soldiers and Marines were killed. But only 40,000 were killed by the enemy. 18,000 died in accidents and freak occurrences. About 800 to 1,800 were murdered by other US military personnel.

There are many reasons this situation exists but a big part is that the SEALs draw from a pool of candidates who have no tactical background unlike say the Army or Marines or even to a lesser degree the AF. The point here is that a SEALs candidate has to completely develop while going through BUDS and then on a team into an operator. He has to learn many things that his counterparts in the other services come into SOF already aware of. This creates issues as young SEALs don't want to learn "the basics" as they see them as archaic or "old school" yet they are vital to surviving combat. Another big issue is that because the SEALs are such a small (but expensive) part of the Navy, there is a very real tendency for its leadership to cover up and sugar coat issues and problems because big Navy leadership has little time for the type of heat SEAL problems can bring. In other words, big Navy is happy to end a lot of careers very fast when an issue develops without looking into the actual problem because there is a very real animosity between big Navy and the SEAL community.
I will say that my hat is off to Eric, he has titanium balls to come out against these self proclaimed "legends". I have heard repeatedly about the shit Kyle did from Recon Marines who were on the ground with him, one flat out called him a Murderer. I heard all about the lone survivor BS from the Recce plt from 2/75 who were the guys who had to dig out the dead SEALs and recovered Latrell. Eric is absolutely right, if they do not unfuck this pretty soon the Navy is going to find a way to shit can them or reduce them dramatically.

Seals, and SF are a dead breed; not dying, dead. They have proven to be of no use in modern warfare in the current geo-political climate. SF and SEALs are unnecessary and not useful.
I would cut the force by 90% send them all the regular forces. Keep the top 10% to keep the lights on and train in case we do ever need them for future fights.
But SOF is worthless in America.

They pride themselves in breaking the rules, which can get away from you really quick when it comes to adjacent unit coordinations, basic TTPs, comms, ROE, Laws of Land Warfare, accountability of men weapons and equipment, exploitation of access to operational and procurement funds, outdated by valuable equipment not on property books, etc.

The movie LONE SURVIVOR - theres a point in that movie where the TRUTH ends... No one would capture 2 teens in the mountains and then let them go and then try to RUN AWAY UP A MOUNTAIN and WAIT for Extract.. Hoping the two teens wouldnt get to their town first.. This is ridicuous! When they were compromised by those two kids they executed them,,,BUT were seen!!! Thats how that whole mission went haywire! They were on the run for their lives after they killed those kids... thats the only thing that makes sense.... Letting them go so you can run away up a mountian with no comms and no extract is pure FANTASY! If anything, they would have taken the kids with them and let them go once the extract arrived... THAT makes sense.... No team leader makes that DUMB of a decision. They killed the kids...got caught...then had to make up a story. Unfortunately a bad decision.

Hi, I’m a woman in her 20s and I’m training to become a U.S. Navy SEAL.
A woman made it to day 4 of BUD/S first phase recently but she quit on that day. That’s the farthest a woman has made it. Her BUD/S classmates told me that her class hated her and ran her out from under the boat because she was a boat ducker. Nine women have entered the SEAL pipeline since 2016.
