It’s honestly surreal seeing this man on RUclips. I had him as my company 1stSgt and I remember him as this larger then life character while I was going through boot camp like “no way could there be a dude this cool” and he was just a total embodiment of what being a Marine truly means. This should cross the political lines too. Don’t get out of office as a multimillionaire on an elected officials salary. They, pretty much, all care more about their bank statements more than the country. Shrink the government by 1/2 or more and the ones left must follow ethical guidelines or they’re out. I might be happier then.

Never heard it put that way! Interesting analogy. My dad was a pickle in the 50s. He was a reservist on an MCAS NAS naval air station. he was a bulk refueler worked on the flight line. Drank CAMP Lejuene water for three months. Didn't help his GI tract, or his over health over the years. May he rest in peace. Love you dad.
I was at DI school when 1stSgt parkes spoke to my class 4-20. man is 100% genuine and a down to earth person and i couldn't picture him as a drill instructor seeing him with a campaign cover lol. awesome human being!
D.I. Aces, we need to have old timers, old school Marines come back into the mix and start educating our young people. As a recently retired veteran with 33 years I do my best to pass on life lessons and leadership lessons. I have my mistakes, big and small. I actually went from the Marines to the Guard and ended up in the air force for 19 years. Old grunts like us are hard to find. Thanks for leading D.I. without men like you, we'd be lost in battle. I remember meeting Randall at 1st MSOB/MARSOC and deploying with him in Afghanistan as a SOTF-West. I believe we were both Staff Sergeants at time, I was in Comm and he was part of the Paraloft. It's true, we had the badest and coolest dudes in Marine Corps for this deployment...the A team. One of the best deployments while in the Corps. One of a kind.

That’s a once in a lifetime experience just like how the vets from ww2 and Vietnam had their own one time experience, y’all boys post 911 had the most bad ass deployment. The book "In The Days of Victorio" is one of my favorite. It tells of Victorio, Mangas Coloradas, Nana and others. Exceptional men. All the best to you bro.

I believe the author is Eve Ball, but it's actually the first hand account of a Warm Springs Apache named James Kaywaykla, who was with Geronimo and Taza, the son of Cochise when they made their last run. About 17 hungry, hunted people who were able to evade the awesome military might of the US Army. Amazing true story of some of the bravest most capable men the world has ever produced. I highly recommend it. Take care brother. I hope every blessing and good thing comes your way.
The guy who tied him in pull ups was in my platoon, we both enlisted out of Dallas MEPS and shipped to boot camp together and he was the rack next to mine the whole cycle! It’s so awesome that he remembers that because that’s also something I’ll never forget and I still tell people that story.

Had the pleasure of having him as my Senior Drill Instructor during boot camp. Real stand up guy, you could tell behind that campaing cover, he was actually a really nice person.
Awesome interview. Bravo Zulu to First Sergeant Parkes. My Father-in-Law was an Iwo Jima Marine. He was in for 4 years and was active every day of those years. He was away from family the entire time. Sure different than now. He trained up to be a Demolitions man for his Iwo deployment. On hos 26th day on Iwo, he was shot, taking a foot long grazing shot down his back when he was falling into a bomb crater in the sandy soil there. His older brother, a navy Corpsman found him in the triage tent just hours before he was taken off the island to be sent ship for transport to a hospital. He always said, " I was a dumb 19 year old Corporal, I should have gotten shot on day 2 to get the Hell outta there!! To his final days, he spoke of the friends he lost there. He joined the local VFW in Eagle River, WI, where he lived and was a member there for 62 years. He held a very deep Hatred for the Japanese most of his life. He finished his Corps time after doing Japan Occupation as an MP. When he got home he went to work at a quarry where his demo skills got him to be the primary blasting man for the quarry. After a year of that he got into Electrical work and became a Lineman then a supervisor for a number of years, even doing contract power-line work in foreign countries. I sure do miss him. He was as much a Father to me as my very own Dad was. Thank you lester Twigg. Semper Fi.

He was my 1st Sgt at BMP on MCRD San Diego! He didn’t even talk about it, but he kept morale high among those injured Marines (myself included). I knew he was a badass but didn’t know the full scope of it
He submitted his retirement package exactly the same way I did in 2005. I had always gone wherever the Corps sent me. My last duty station was Marine Barracks 8 & I. I had completed two parade seasons and wanted to go back to a deploying unit at Lejeune. I called my 08 monitor and asked for orders, and he told me that I HAD to stay in DC for another year. I hung up the phone with him, called our admin section, and asked them to send me the paperwork I needed to submit my retirement. I never looked back. He didnt realize that I knew I had other options.
Stand up guy and comes across as very genuine and down to earth. Too bad the corps loses great men like him and keeps the careerists who are out for themselves and the game.
I watched Randall's second UV episode first (EXCELLENT!!!), so I had to watch this one, too. Seeing a 20 year MC veteran transition so successfully to the civilian world is really a great thing to witness. Randall is the definition of "squared away".
I wish I would of served with him in the corps, however I had the pleasure to meet him as my realtor and he is super humble, down to earth and on top of his game. 100/10

My oldest son went to OCS with the Navy in Newport RI. All OCS classes have several enlisted basic instructors and one Marine Corps DI. His was Gunnery SGT Campbell. He told me stories of gunny Campbell 'destroying' his class constantly and making life as miserable as he could. The thing is, his memories of that entire OCS class revolves around his memories of Sgt Campbell and how great of a mentor he was for the Navy and his life in general. He chose Sgt Campbell as his 'first salute' after graduating as a new Ensign in the Navy.
You can hear it in this man's voice when he's talking about the mortar to his helmet that was going to break down and cry in the Happy Lucky facade went goodbye.. I would feel confident see this man next to me if the world went crazy... Respect t and love everything every soldier has done or will do ..

Semper Fi! Sometimes I miss the gun club, sometimes I don't. But the Marine Corps will always be my single greatest personal achievement that only I could accomplish, unlike a marriage or raising children, and for me that will always be the thing I take most to heart from my days in the Corps.

Never forget my Recruiter, 1983. one week after Beirut, Gunny Matson, he was tanker..he seen me talking to Navy and Air force, he was like you want to be the BEST.. I said hell yes, and then I joined the USMC.. went back 13 weeks later with dress blues and Platoon Honor graduate
What he says about being prepared with different options and having them ready is very very true; at 10 years in, 2 years into a 6 year reenlistment, they found tumors in my lung and had to remove 44 percent of my total lung capacity. Well I was a lifer from the age of 14 when I decided to join. The lung surgery was 31 years ago and still every day...every day... every day I struggle to not give in to the feeling I was cheated. I have lived a great life...I love the Marine Corps...I always say anything for a Marine or a pretty girl...Semper Fi...
1stSgt Parkes! Was and is a great leader. He was my 1stSgt when I was a hat a couple years ago. Very common sense and this video shows that we were right about him being a great leader!

For all you active duty and vets please absorb his wisdom. I concur with everything he's saying. I've been a nurse for 16 years, 10 being with the VA. I am surrounded by ppl like the 1stSgt. I could have done much better and gone further in my life, if I had this kind of guidance earlier. Most of all, be cool to yourself. Take care of your MH. Then conquer your moments. Keep putting in the work. We are counting on you to continue to play your important role in society. Side note. Being a vet is an an honor. Being a Marine is humbling. You represent a strangers uncle, grandad, dad, mom, grandma, friend, etc... the importance of being a Marine is truly felt, when you are no longer surrounded by your brothers and sister's. @BuffCheeks80085 Testament for the importance of your reply and to be transparent with Yall. I have done nothing to assist my process since I wrote that 1 month prior. Continue to find excuses or other reasons to allow additional tasking for others or myself to supersede what I have continued to stack on top of for over a decade now already. I have taken that wisdom and helped others move in the right direction. Not trying to justify my inaction but I facilitate a course on the side for the military called Enlisted Leader Development. Have applied this term and rationale to several Groups and it always excites a genuine reaction from all Veterans but starts deep conversation, especially from those that have deployed or should be pursuing that same sort of full-spectrum path to healing that we all deserve. 1stSgt u just made my freaking day brother. When i retired back in 2015, i was prepared to get out. Everything you said was on the money brother. I got a phone call by my Sgtmaj say i got selected for 1stSgt lol. I was like where am i going he said Nc, i was already in the 29 palm's lol. I was just back from Afghanistan i was like no thanks Semper Fi, lol. I went through the same trash with my monitor. U going where the Crops need u lol. But i knew i did everything to get out and i was ready lol. 1stSgt u brought water to my eyes 5 deployments to Iraq and i was Supply, alot of convoys. Alot of trigger time, lol. Damn! That guy motivates the piss out of me. I’d love to see him do a Ted Talk on recognizing and taking advantages of opportunities without losing your self. There are so many friends in mind, both veteran and civilians, that could get a lot out of that.
I've listened to this like 3 times. Parkes is infectious with his positive attitude. Musta been awesome to serve with. Wish I woulda reenlisted every time I hear him talk about our Corps.
1st sarnt Parkes!! He was my 1st Sgt in BMP (where injured Marines go) on the recruit depot in November 2020. We had a Marine go UA and when I was giving my report to the MP’s, I was in 1st Sgt’s office and I noticed all of his moto shadow boxes and paddles from his previous units/ deployments. I realized he was an absolute badass. I knew he was attached to a recon platoon but I had no idea he was a recon Marine and MARSOC Marine, nor did I know he spent time in Fallujah. Rah 1st sarnt, I’m honored to have been under your leadership if only for a short Time
I completely get it. Desert Shield kicked off when I was at MCRD. Contract 0311 so shit got real real quick! MCT and SOI we all were sponges because we KNEW we were absolutely going to need this knowledge.
I love the drill instructor idea of "i need theee guys to protect us when shtf so im gonna treat them like shit" it's just a great way to make someone want to stand by your side
Marine you made my day. My thanks goes to you and my fellow Marines. I was already retired from our Marine Corps in 1994 after serving 21 years 3 months and 7 days. But who’s counting right. Anyway I’m very impressed with your Gung Ho attitude and it reminds me of my Drill Instructors at San Diego. I enlisted in the Corps 3 months out high school. I wanted to get away from my hometown and especially my Army father. I had learned from the best. The Vietnam Veterans before, during and after. I wish you the best Marine. A true warrior. I was in 1983-2005 GySgt Ret. Former 0311/41 then 0231. Love hearing stories of brother in the Corps. I loved his comment about the Marine Corps being like a marriage. I had 2 kids that joined the Corps, older son served 2 tours in the Helmand Prov. My son asked how I did 23 years I told him it was like a bad marriage. I got out twice and no other service would take me lol. MARSOC was just a thought when I was getting out. I was to broken to think about even the intel side of the house. I remember the base paper advertising when Force Recon company was doing indocs. I have a good buddy who came out of motor T and did that. Thank you for your story Randall, very motivating. Semper Fi

I had a similar incident in boot camp Senior told all the smokers they could have a cigarette after chow. The Jr DI came out and gave them 1 cigarette for like 30 smokers . I wasn’t a smoker. The pain on all their faces was so freaking funny . Jr said “ senior said one not all 30 cigarettes ONE!!!

I am picking up what you're putting down. I did 24 years in the US Navy, from 1980 to 2004. I retired as SCPO Submarines. But, I understand what you are saying. I started on destroyers, 3. Then I pulled my first shore duty, military police in Subic Bay Philippines. The military police were run by the Marines. My chain of command for about two and a half years was a Top, a Major and a Colonel. When I first got there I was a 2nd Class Petty Officer and made 1st Class Petty Officer while I was there. I primarily worked in the town of Olongapo, this was from 1985 to 1987. My career evolved from there, I went on to volunteer for Submarine duty. At what I thought was the end of my career, 9/11 happened. My retirement papers were already in. On 9/12, I pulled my retirement papers and served another three and a half years. I was also looking at a promotion to E-9 when I did that. Thank you for your Service!
An absolutely outstanding interview. Not only from a great Marine and his description of the grunt-life experiences, but most especially his attitude and professionalism as a Marine Corps Drill Instructor. The most important job in The Corps ... they make us what we are, and establish within us an ethos and that never give up no matter what attitude that makes us HARD, as crazy as it sounds to everyone else. 57 yr old Navy Vet here I hope these people like him who joined the military 2001 thru 2006 or so run this country some day .

I remember meeting Randall at 1st MSOB/MARSOC and deploying with him in Afghanistan as a SOTF-West. I believe we were both Staff Sergeants at time, I was in Comm and he was part of the Paraloft. It's true, we had the badest and coolest dudes in Marine Corps for this deployment...the A team. One of the best deployments while in the Corps. One of a kind.

I believe the author is Eve Ball, but it's actually the first hand account of a Warm Springs Apache named James Kaywaykla, who was with Geronimo and Taza, the son of Cochise when they made their last run. About 17 hungry, hunted people who were able to evade the awesome military might of the US Army. Amazing true story of some of the bravest most capable men the world has ever produced. I highly recommend it. Take care brother. I hope every blessing and good thing comes your way.
The guy who tied him in pull ups was in my platoon, we both enlisted out of Dallas MEPS and shipped to boot camp together and he was the rack next to mine the whole cycle! It’s so awesome that he remembers that because that’s also something I’ll never forget and I still tell people that story.

Had the pleasure of having him as my Senior Drill Instructor during boot camp. Real stand up guy, you could tell behind that campaing cover, he was actually a really nice person.
Awesome interview. Bravo Zulu to First Sergeant Parkes. My Father-in-Law was an Iwo Jima Marine. He was in for 4 years and was active every day of those years. He was away from family the entire time. Sure different than now. He trained up to be a Demolitions man for his Iwo deployment. On hos 26th day on Iwo, he was shot, taking a foot long grazing shot down his back when he was falling into a bomb crater in the sandy soil there. His older brother, a navy Corpsman found him in the triage tent just hours before he was taken off the island to be sent ship for transport to a hospital. He always said, " I was a dumb 19 year old Corporal, I should have gotten shot on day 2 to get the Hell outta there!! To his final days, he spoke of the friends he lost there. He joined the local VFW in Eagle River, WI, where he lived and was a member there for 62 years. He held a very deep Hatred for the Japanese most of his life. He finished his Corps time after doing Japan Occupation as an MP. When he got home he went to work at a quarry where his demo skills got him to be the primary blasting man for the quarry. After a year of that he got into Electrical work and became a Lineman then a supervisor for a number of years, even doing contract power-line work in foreign countries. I sure do miss him. He was as much a Father to me as my very own Dad was. Thank you lester Twigg. Semper Fi.

MCRD is Marine Corps Recruit Depot. West of the Mississippi goes to MCRD San Diego and East of the Mississippi goes to Paris Island South Carolina.
He was my 1st Sgt at BMP on MCRD San Diego! He didn’t even talk about it, but he kept morale high among those injured Marines (myself included). I knew he was a badass but didn’t know the full scope of it

He submitted his retirement package exactly the same way I did in 2005. I had always gone wherever the Corps sent me. My last duty station was Marine Barracks 8 & I. I had completed two parade seasons and wanted to go back to a deploying unit at Lejeune. I called my 08 monitor and asked for orders, and he told me that I HAD to stay in DC for another year. I hung up the phone with him, called our admin section, and asked them to send me the paperwork I needed to submit my retirement. I never looked back. He didnt realize that I knew I had other options.
Stand up guy and comes across as very genuine and down to earth. Too bad the corps loses great men like him and keeps the careerists who are out for themselves and the game.

I wish I would of served with him in the corps, however I had the pleasure to meet him as my realtor and he is super humble, down to earth and on top of his game. 100/10

My oldest son went to OCS with the Navy in Newport RI. All OCS classes have several enlisted basic instructors and one Marine Corps DI. His was Gunnery SGT Campbell. He told me stories of gunny Campbell 'destroying' his class constantly and making life as miserable as he could. The thing is, his memories of that entire OCS class revolves around his memories of Sgt Campbell and how great of a mentor he was for the Navy and his life in general. He chose Sgt Campbell as his 'first salute' after graduating as a new Ensign in the Navy.
You can hear it in this man's voice when he's talking about the mortar to his helmet that was going to break down and cry in the Happy Lucky facade went goodbye..
I would feel confident see this man next to me if the world went crazy...

Semper Fi! Sometimes I miss the gun club, sometimes I don't. But the Marine Corps will always be my single greatest personal achievement that only I could accomplish, unlike a marriage or raising children, and for me that will always be the thing I take most to heart from my days in the Corps.

Never forget my Recruiter, 1983. one week after Beirut, Gunny Matson, he was tanker..he seen me talking to Navy and Air force, he was like you want to be the BEST.. I said hell yes, and then I joined the USMC.. went back 13 weeks later with dress blues and Platoon Honor graduate
What he says about being prepared with different options and having them ready is very very true; at 10 years in, 2 years into a 6 year reenlistment, they found tumors in my lung and had to remove 44 percent of my total lung capacity. Well I was a lifer from the age of 14 when I decided to join. The lung surgery was 31 years ago and still every day...every day... every day I struggle to not give in to the feeling I was cheated. I have lived a great life...I love the Marine Corps...I always say anything for a Marine or a pretty girl...Semper Fi...

For all you active duty and vets please absorb his wisdom. I concur with everything he's saying. I've been a nurse for 16 years, 10 being with the VA. I am surrounded by ppl like the 1stSgt. I could have done much better and gone further in my life, if I had this kind of guidance earlier. Most of all, be cool to yourself. Take care of your MH. Then conquer your moments. Keep putting in the work. We are counting on you to continue to play your important role in society.
Side note. Being a vet is an an honor. Being a Marine is humbling. You represent a strangers uncle, grandad, dad, mom, grandma, friend, etc... the importance of being a Marine is truly felt, when you are no longer surrounded by your brothers and sister's. Be well folks. SF 1stSgt & keep killing it!

Continue to find excuses or other reasons to allow additional tasking for others or myself to supersede what I have continued to stack on top of for over a decade now already.
I have taken that wisdom and helped others move in the right direction.
Not trying to justify my inaction but I facilitate a course on the side for the military called Enlisted Leader Development. Have applied this term and rationale to several Groups and it always excites a genuine reaction from all Veterans but starts deep conversation, especially from those that have deployed or should be pursuing that same sort of full-spectrum path to healing that we all deserve.

I got a phone call by my Sgtmaj say i got selected for 1stSgt lol. I was like where am i going he said Nc, i was already in the 29 palm's lol. I was just back from Afghanistan i was like no thanks Semper Fi, lol. I went through the same trash with my monitor. U going where the Crops need u lol. But i knew i did everything to get out and i was ready lol. 1stSgt u brought water to my eyes 5 deployments to Iraq and i was Supply, alot of convoys. Alot of trigger time, lol. 1st sarnt Parkes!! He was my 1st Sgt in BMP (where injured Marines go) on the recruit depot in November 2020. We had a Marine go UA and when I was giving my report to the MP’s, I was in 1st Sgt’s office and I noticed all of his moto shadow boxes and paddles from his previous units/ deployments. I realized he was an absolute badass. I knew he was attached to a recon platoon but I had no idea he was a recon Marine and MARSOC Marine, nor did I know he spent time in Fallujah. Rah 1st sarnt, I’m honored to have been under your leadership if only for a short Time

I completely get it. Desert Shield kicked off when I was at MCRD. Contract 0311 so shit got real real quick! MCT and SOI we all were sponges because we KNEW we were absolutely going to need this knowledge.

Anyway I’m very impressed with your Gung Ho attitude and it reminds me of my Drill Instructors at San Diego. I enlisted in the Corps 3 months out high school. I wanted to get away from my hometown and especially my Army father. I had learned from the best. The Vietnam Veterans before, during and after. I wish you the best Marine. A true warrior. I was in 1983-2005 GySgt Ret. Former 0311/41 then 0231. Love hearing stories of brother in the Corps. I loved his comment about the Marine Corps being like a marriage. I had 2 kids that joined the Corps, older son served 2 tours in the Helmand Prov. My son asked how I did 23 years I told him it was like a bad marriage. I got out twice and no other service would take me lol. MARSOC was just a thought when I was getting out. I was to broken to think about even the intel side of the house. I remember the base paper advertising when Force Recon company was doing indocs. I have a good buddy who came out of motor T and did that. Thank you for your story Randall, very motivating. Semper Fi

I had a similar incident in boot camp Senior told all the smokers they could have a cigarette after chow. The Jr DI came out and gave them 1 cigarette for like 30 smokers . I wasn’t a smoker. The pain on all their faces was so freaking funny . Jr said “ senior said one not all 30 cigarettes ONE!!!

I am picking up what you're putting down. I did 24 years in the US Navy, from 1980 to 2004. I retired as SCPO Submarines. But, I understand what you are saying. I started on destroyers, 3. Then I pulled my first shore duty, military police in Subic Bay Philippines. The military police were run by the Marines. My chain of command for about two and a half years was a Top, a Major and a Colonel. When I first got there I was a 2nd Class Petty Officer and made 1st Class Petty Officer while I was there. I primarily worked in the town of Olongapo, this was from 1985 to 1987.
My career evolved from there, I went on to volunteer for Submarine duty.
At what I thought was the end of my career, 9/11 happened. My retirement papers were already in. On 9/12, I pulled my retirement papers and served another three and a half years. I was also looking at a promotion to E-9 when I did that.

An absolutely outstanding interview. Not only from a great Marine and his description of the grunt-life experiences, but most especially his attitude and professionalism as a Marine Corps Drill Instructor. The most important job in The Corps ... they make us what we are, and establish within us an ethos and that never give up no matter what attitude that makes us HARD, as crazy as it sounds to everyone else.
We we carry it with us forever. (Most of us anyway, as not all have the same positive experience).
