  • Took my mate Bristoe who showed me in a previous video how to catch squid. It’s my turn to return the favour. This time I’m gonna show him how to catch flatties with SP from A to Z….
Spoil alert! He outdid me! 😂😂😂🤷‍♂️

You blokes did really well Sonnie. Every time I’ve tried fishing with plastics down at the Pin around Crusoe, the lure has been quickly carried away by the current. Maybe you’re fishing further away from the bar than I’ve tried. I’ll have to have a go at exploring some new areas once the weather settles.

Just the top of Crusoe Island mate. It’s easy. We use 1/6g and 1/4g size 1 to 1/0 tt jigheads. The trick is to throw up current and drift back. Bristoe used 1/4 all day. As long as you are in contact with the bottom you should be able to get a few. I often set my ipilot to point up the bank and jog the speed so that the boat crawls slowly parallel to the bank allowing me to cover new grounds constantly. When I hook a fish I hit spotlock then repeat the process :)

Also the thickness of your line is very important. We use top quality braid where the thickness is at a minimum reducing drag.

@@sonniesfishingadventures I’m running 8lb Daiwa J braid which seems to be pretty thin, and if I’m after flatties will usually tie on a 10 lb or 12 lb leader. Any thoughts?

We use 6lb leader.. thats ample. Can pull up 65cm models easily.

@@sonniesfishingadventures Thanks. I’ll try dropping back, nervously. I’ve been concerned about head shakes and a good one biting the line through.

Bristoe gave a good account ofr himself & had an excellent confidence booster for his first attempt at fishing for Flathead using soft plastic. A combined catch of 32 was a very good result. Thanks for sharing.

Great vid. Do you find the 1/4oz jighead the best in that water? Do you prefer the fine gauge or heavier gauge hooks on your jigheads? Cheers

I use 1/6 most of the time, 1/4 if its a bit blowy. I generally use 1/6 whereas my mate fishes mostly 1/4. It also depends on the thickness of your line and how much drag it causes in the water. General rule of thumb is if it touches the bottom you’d be fine. Just throw up current and hop it back. I use light gauge. I fine they hook the fish better because they’re thinner n sharper. The heavy gauge I’d use if I am chasing something bigger like snapper, big flathead etc :)

Very interesting info. Sonnie do you use the same line strengths when trolling? Or don't you troll?

I only troll on the kayak. I use around 10-15lb to troll
