I bought the 'wrong' laptop and fell in love with it! The Asus Zephyrus G16 RTX 4070 16GB

  • I bought the ASUS ROG Zephyrus G16 RTX 4070 Intel Core Ultra 9 with 16GB of RAM. If I had listened to the internet, I would have believed that this was the wrong laptop to buy.
    We get so wrapped up in the specs and the meta of making a decision on tech products that we often lose the forest for the trees. Here's why I bought the "wrong" laptop, but it was right for me.

      Me too, but from all accounts the gaming performance is just surprisingly good for ARM and won't touch current RTX cards. And the Core Ultra 9 is a huge improvement on Intel's power efficiency.

    Love the way you look at it, great video.
    People really don't understand the amazing experience of having a laptop that has the quality and form factor of a macbook while still being powerful enough for most gamers.
    I totally would sacrifice 20-30% performance for such a sleek and portable high quality experience.

      People get so into the meta of the "right" solution. Maximizing performance per dollar is not the only consideration.

      @@AdultsHaveToysToo exactly, those same people will buy a macbook + a desktop PC for a marginally better experience, while they could have 80% of the functionality of both with 1 device.

    You are so right about everything you s😊id. It’s like you read my mind and made a video of it. I think the features and performance this laptop offers is outstanding. I believe this is one of, if not the only Oled laptop with gsync. I almost didn’t get this laptop because of all the RUclips noise. Thank for the video. Great good. Hope more people see this video that wants this laptop.

    The reason you see grainy/noise pattern is to avoid banding/tinting.
    There is a wallpaper that has banding on colours, but if you add noise (photo editor) then banding on wallpaper dissappears.

    Bought a 2024 HP Omen Transcend 14 with 16gb and 4060 about 3 months ago at BestBuy on sale for $1499. I have really enjoyed it and I think it does a great job playing games. Internet told me I made the wrong choice too. Now if your G16 had been available at the time, I would have bought it instead in hindsight. But that is the nature of the laptop market. Btw, my daughter loves the Totoro shirt!

    Love the video! i still cant believe how some people just cant wrap their head around why gaming laptop exists and just say go "build tower".
    There are consumers who needs those power to game and do work while moving around. I move houses every few weeks, growing up moving around different cities and in case i need to move to do work, i need a laptop. Building a tower means you're anchored to one spot while if i need to move I just need to take the laptop, charger, and mouse and im basically good everywhere i go. Granted, you're paying a premium for a performance not as high as towers, but it works for some people's lifestyle.
    The only issue of this lifestyle I'd always give is you may need to tinker the machine to get the temps right, solve battery bugs, which can be annoying.

    • @AdultsHaveToysToo
      @AdultsHaveToysToo  2 месяца назад +1

      Exactly. I think people get wrapped up in getting maximum performance per dollar, but a computer is more than just there performance. If someone wants to use their money to prioritize mobility then they are well aware that they aren't getting top spec performance because they know some of the dollars went to something else that they value.

    Hit it on the nailhead. 4080 and 32 gigs RAM would be nice, but not for 1,000 dollars more.
    For 1600 this is a great buy considering the form factor, speakers and screen.

    • @AdultsHaveToysToo
      @AdultsHaveToysToo  5 дней назад

      Exactly. I understand there are trade offs for the form factor, but it's ok that some people are happy with those trade offs, even if they wouldn't be acceptable to you.

    It's way better with 4080 or 4090, because of vapor chamber cooling. But it's still underpowered for the same price compared to competitors, which are +0.5 or +1 cm thicker

    • @AdultsHaveToysToo
      @AdultsHaveToysToo  2 месяца назад

      Absolutely it's better, but then the question is if it's $1000 better. Probably could get a 4080 for around the price of this 4070 if the size and weight compromise is worth it to you, but that's a personal choice that different for each person. I'm willing to pay a little more for less weight and size.

    It seems like most companies nowadays have adopted Apple's strategy of intentionally making lower and mid-tier options lacking in some obvious way to pressure consumers into jumping up to the more premium options at a significant price hike.
    Asus knows a 32gb 4060 option would be the "sweet spot" that a majority of consumers would consider the perfect compromise of performance and cost in such a thin form factor, but in the US they don't seem to offer it forcing you to jump to a 4070 to also get 32gb of ram and at a big cost jump (and that's after they make you jump the hoop of a 16gb 4070 model in the way).
    Essentially, unless you're willing to go up to the top models at their significantly higher prices, you're forced to accept losing things that are missing only because the manufacturer wanted them to be.

      I was comparing across generations. The old laptop had a GTX 460 and the new one RTX 4070, so the 60 tier and the 70 teir within their own generations. I could have been more clear though.

    In my country Asus have only the 4070 with 32gb. I think its a great device but tons of people say that have overheating problems and the cooling system it’s not the best. So I don’t know if could be a great purchase for me.
    I have an asus tuf with gtx 1650 but the display doesn’t work. I know it’s a big step and all the things with the 4070 will be amazing but the “fan noise” and the overheating things scared me.
    My last option could be buying in the US the 4080 model without the ñ and losing the warranty.
    What would you recommend?

    • @AdultsHaveToysToo
      @AdultsHaveToysToo  Месяц назад +1

      That's awesome you can get the 4070 with 32GB. I haven't had any heating issues as long as I'm not putting it on the bed or something. It needs clear ventilation. I don't imagine that would be any different with the vapor chamber. I don't mind the noise, it's not nearly as bad as people say, at least my example, but if you're particularly sensitive I would go 4080 as long as the price jump isn't too much. That's my main issue. 4080 is better all around, but $1000 is too big of a price jump.

      GPU is between 65 and 85°C and some portions of the laptop is too hot to touch which is expected with a metal chassis. The palm area stays quiet cool though. Doesn't throttle. Office tasks gets hotter than my thin and light, but still cool to the touch.

    Awesome to get a new video, though can't say I've been as active in watching as much as I used to be. I went with gaming laptops for the last decade or so & recently just built a desktop because of exactly what you said, "it's what works for me". I'm sure there'll be a point where gaming laptops will be what I go back to, but as it stands my current one will play any old game I want & for jew games I generally prefer the experience of playing in console, plus jew games are interesting me less & less these days compared to ones I already own & are on my backlog... Never mind that I just bought a Neo Geo MVSX mini-arcade cabinet.
    That screen is beautiful with the gloss & lack of reflections, can't wait for that to become more standard especially on phones or my next TV (I've got wall mirrors behind my OLED at the moment & it's not bad but I don't want to put up a wall either).
    Glad you're happy with your choice though, as that's the most important thing! We'll that & playing the Yakuza/Like A Dragon games, their great!

      It's been a long time since I've put something up, lol. And yes, everyone has different use cases and priorities. Min/max is not always the solution. I finally just got into the Yakuza series this year after ignoring it for a long time. Sega really has something great with that series.
