My mother, who played piano at church for 50+ years, asked for The Holy City to be played on piano at her funeral. It was. I love this song. Thank you Jessye Norman for singing/recording this, and thank you Felipe Gregory for posting this.
So beautiful as always. Miss Jessye, may you rest in peace and rise in glory. Weep not, weep not. She is not dead. She is resting in the bosom of Jesus.
This is one of my very favorite Hymns and no body has ever or will ever do it better than you! God Speed Jessye Norman. You have blessed and gifted us over the years with your incredible voice. Thank you! You are loved.
I dont mean to be offtopic but does someone know a trick to log back into an Instagram account? I stupidly lost my password. I would appreciate any help you can offer me!
@Emory Saint thanks for your reply. I found the site on google and Im in the hacking process now. Seems to take a while so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
I love this song so much and have sang it over and over and heard everyone sing it, but she is PERFECT! I have listened to it four times and been crying! Thank you Jesus!
Dear Lady Jessye Throughout your life, you realised that you were respected by the public. I hope that you knew, by an even greater measure, how much you were loved.
I was privileged to count Jessye my friend when we studied with the same voice teacher at the University of Michigan in the 60's. She was always lovely, understated, thoughtful and modest. I miss her even though we only saw each other 2 times after college.
Bought the CD years ago - a pleasure to hear it again - truly magnificent. Took a renewed interest in the song after hearing her do it. It was on the radio while I was driving - I pulled over and listened to the whole thing - in tears. Hers is the greatest - too bad it wasn't with full orchestra - though he organist was great " The light of God was on its streets - the gates were open wide - and all would might enter - and no one was denied." Magnificent text, sung magnificently!
Thanks for this posting..I had this played at the Memorial service for a long time friend who passed away May 23, 1990, nearly twenty years ago..Jessye Norman was his favorite singer and this glorious performance still moves me to tears. We Georgians are so proud of our sister from Augusta
I love this song and NOBODY sings it like Jessye Norman. I'm an Atheist, I don't believe in God, but when she sings this song I sincerely weep. "And all who would might enter, and no one was denied."
Cette chanson est sublime, elle me transporte vers mon divin rédempteur.Mon âme tressaille d'allégresse quand je l'écoute et l'interprète. Quelle inspiration!
What a stupendous voice & talent. The gates of heaven surely did open wide for you, dear Jessye Norman. Rest in peace. Your voice will live on for all eternity.
Jessie Norman is perfect, she has one of the most beautiful voices of all time at all. And she presents a brilliant interpretation of this song, as always. I do love her.
I used to announce classical music on the radio, and this was a Good Friday staple for me. My mother accompanied singers in this number hundreds of times, so it became a favorite of mine, chestnut though it is. This is my favorite version ever, and I think the organ is just right!
Regarding the comments here that are mean or combative or ignorant: here's the difference between you and Jessye Norman, one of the greatest 3 or 4 American classical singers of our time: she has a great gift and she focused on developing it in a noble context. She practices and performs and I assume has a rich and fulfilling relationship with co-musicians, conductors, and audiences. She works at the highest levels of achievement. She probably does not fret about silly remarks others make about anything; she has her eye on the prize, with a capital P. She has more important things to do and care about than dissing some anonymous babbler on youtube. And THAT is the difference between her and those who can't see past their own egos and noses.
Jessye Norman has been blessed with such a beautiful voice I just keep coming back to her performances. In this caase she is performing one of my favorite pieces of music, The Holy City.
Just gorgeous. Very slow tempo, but Jesse can pull it off. There are a number of truly loopy comments here that have NOTHING to do with either the piece or the performance; this seems to be par for the course when it comes to RUclips performances of sacred repertoire. As to Ms. Norman's performance in Columbus: any performer can have a bad day. One has to look at the big picture and Ms. Norman's reputation is stellar. Secondly...sometimes an alleged subpar performance is a result receptivity on the part of of the listener! I wish all RUclips responders would show both respect and humility. Naive of me, huh? Thanks.
Prachtig.
Wow, what a stunning rendition. This the most beautiful version I have ever heard. I felt like I was hearing this directly from heaven. She was truly a gift from God.
Jessye Norman has been a favourite for so long, this is glorious, organ a bit clunky but her voice is magnificient, music is supposed to move the heart, this moves it into next week, so glad to find this, we will be hearing this in the next life as well as this. Wagner must have been hearing this voice when he composed the Ring
One of my father's favorite songs when I was growing up in my native land. He has a baritone tenor register. I knew I could find her rendition of this great song and indeed that really matches her greatness! I WILL LIMIT MY SOUL'S CAPACITY TO BE MOVED BY DEFINING MY SPIRITUAL INSPIRATION THROUGH RELIGIOSITY!
THIS BRING BACK MEMORIES WHEN MY MUM WOULD SING THIS SHE HAD A WONDERFUL SOPRANO VOICE SADLY SHE HAS NOW PASSED ON HOWEVER I CAN STILL HEAR HER IN FUL VOICE RIP MUM
My favorite song for palm Sunday as I sang this two times in my church then majority of the comments was because of their wide imagination of the beauty of Jerusalem
My mother, who played piano at church for 50+ years, asked for The Holy City to be played on piano at her funeral. It was. I love this song. Thank you Jessye Norman for singing/recording this, and thank you Felipe Gregory for posting this.
The late Jessye Norman had the most perfect, stimulating voice ever! Sadly missed.
My partner introduced me to her back in 1990. I fell in love with her. "What a voice".
So beautiful as always. Miss Jessye, may you rest in peace and rise in glory. Weep not, weep not. She is not dead. She is resting in the bosom of Jesus.
Wow ! Wow ! Wow...what a Heavenly journey so serene.. bless Jehovah Shamma ! Excellent singing ..WOW ! GLORY TO GOD ALMIGHTY !
The most inspiring solo performance of this glorious hymn that I have heard
What an incredible voice .... now the gift returned to God and she is worshipping God and Jesus up in heaven with holy angels and saints.
Halleluah !!! Glory be unto our creator of Heaven and Earth ..
The words, her voice with the pipe organ make heaven so clear. Come Lord Jesus come.
This is one of my very favorite Hymns and no body has ever or will ever do it better than you! God Speed Jessye Norman. You have blessed and gifted us over the years with your incredible voice. Thank you! You are loved.

Que voz maravilhosa!!
My God, she has the most beautiful voice of all time!
I love this song so much and have sang it over and over and heard everyone sing it, but she is PERFECT! I have listened to it four times and been crying! Thank you Jesus!
+Ruth P. Cooper Thank you for your simple and touching comment, keep singing (wish I could!)
Thanks, Janet. God bless you in Christ!
It is pity she is gone. I agree with you nobody can sing The Holly City like Jessye Norman. I love her dearly! Mina
Dear Lady Jessye
Throughout your life, you realised that you were respected by the public. I hope that you knew, by an even greater measure, how much you were loved.

She has been my favorite soprano for many many years, and always so beautifully presented
What a magnificent voice, a Diva indeed!
Masterpiece of singing. It's exactly what the composer would have wanted.

Her looks and her voice are devine - she makes The New Jerusalem The Eden.

someone should tell Mikey Pence that
May the Lord show you Himself and how real He is.
Cette chanson est sublime, elle me transporte vers mon divin rédempteur.Mon âme tressaille d'allégresse quand je l'écoute et l'interprète. Quelle inspiration!
This has to be the most impressive rendition of the song imho. What a gift!

Even though you can't spell her name?
I am deeply sorry for that...
Aww.......I am sorry for pointing it out.
I used to announce classical music on the radio, and this was a Good Friday staple for me. My mother accompanied singers in this number hundreds of times, so it became a favorite of mine, chestnut though it is. This is my favorite version ever, and I think the organ is just right!
Angelic. I struggle to find words which are fitting enough. Perfection. RIP blessed soul.
my favourite song for 70 years and Jessye is the VERY best ever
Thank you. I grew up spoiled by such beautiful voices, and it is thrilling to hear this. Makes me weep, too.

This piece is an indellible part of my childhood New England Christmas. I just love it. Jessye Norman does a wonderful job with it.
