This is why RUclips is great! People like you that contribute valuable information on how to fix stuff. Worked like a charm! I was getting ready to tear down and completely clean out the carburator thinking it was gummed up. So glad I came across your video. I did what you said and it started on the 2nd pull. Saved me a lot of time. Thanks so much.
Matt, thanks a bunch for the kind comment! It's these types of comments that make me want to continue sharing these types of things. In my mind, it can seriously help others, so why not?! I was originally thinking the same thing as you in that I would have to tear down my carburetor. Glad it worked for you too! Thanks for sharing your success!
A friend has another model of Ryobi... the 6500, brand new, only 4 hours on it, and it won't start. I watched your video ,and it was very helpful to determine is choke was NOT the problem. Turns out, the top of his sparkplug was heavily oxidized. A good rub with some 220 sandpaper, and I cleaned the bottom too, and spark confirmed. A couple pulls, and away it went. Thank you for posting your video !
So I’m 76 disabled and know absolutely nothing about engines. after watching this I did exactly what you did and I’m so thankful to you. It worked on first pull. Thank you again so thankful 🙏🏼
Very glad to hear it helped you too! Thanks for sharing your success. Just curious, do you have the kit to run them in parallel? I only have one, but have thought about that.
Wow, so simple of a fix. I was about to call Ryobi to have it serviced and a quick search got me here. Noticed the small adjustment needed and did it before anything. The generator started after the third pull. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so VERY MUCH!! GREAT TIP!! I just purchased my Ryobi generator, and will watch for this problem, thanks to YOU!! Great sleuthing!! Ten gold stars for your posting here!!
Oh heck yeah, this tip worked perfectly! I pulled on that sucker a good 40 times before finally throwing in the towel and heading to RUclips. Once I held the choke open it started on the first pull. Thank you so much!
Thank you very much for this video. My brand new Ryobi generator would not shut off using the dial. The information from this video helped me correct the problem I had with my cable into the throttle. I really to appreciate you sharing your discovery. It saved me a return to Home Depot in a time when I really needed to have a backup generator because of really bad storms causing power outages. You are a literal refrigerator saver! You are a WiFi saver! Thanks again.
Hi Raul! So glad you found it helpful! I like sharing small tips like these to help others. I figure I can’t be the only one having these issues. Well, maybe sometimes. 😆
I don’t care if several others have already said it… worked awesome. I was actually looking into a way to mount a hose out of the side door to spray starter fluid in! 😳… thought.. let me take a quick RUclips look and there you are. Thanks a lot bro!
Thanks very much for the great advice on the cold start switch. My mom's power was out my son was at the house. I was able to guide them on how to start it because of this video. Thank you so much
Thanks for the video man. You are a life saver. I have that exact model generator and I tried like a bugger to start it today and nothing. I came across your video and said "that is exactly what mine is doing". I took off the back cover and held the chock closed a bit more and it started right up. I was so happy. I will wait until the warmer weather arrives to adjust the cable. Thanks again man, I owe you one.
Awesome, thanks Paul! I enjoy the positive feedback knowing this is helping others out. Seems like it’s a pretty common issue! Glad you got yours going when you needed it. Take care!
Wow, exactly it! I had tried like 60 pulls before, was running out of breath. Tried this and started on 3rd pull! Amazing! You saved a lot of my time. Thank you!!!
Yes, this is right way to find and fix this problem. I got this problem after 300 hours of working. Now generator has 1100+ hours and you guys will get new problems soon ))
Awesome! This was a simple fix, but I figured I can't possibly be the only one having this issue with this thing, so I decided to make the video. I am glad to hear it helped you too! Thanks for the feedback!!
You my Friend are a Superstar. I have the exact same generator and it would take 10+ pulls to get it started. Made your recommended adjustment and BAM!!! Start first pull. Thank you Kindly good Sir!
Such a simple little fix, but it seems to plague these generators for some reason. I wonder if it's a Quality Control issue. Glad it worked for you too!
Finally, the video worked for me, my friend greetings from Puerto Rico. This is the fault of these generators, when using both the ignition button the cable of the carburetor is released, I already fixed mine, thanks! Por fin, me funciono el video mi amigo saludos desde puerto rico. Esta es la falla de estos generadores, al usar tanto el boton de encender se suelta el cable del carburador, ya arregle el mio, Gracias!
Have this problem with mine. I looked it up a while back, but refreshing my memory before I take a look at it. Wish I had known of the problem when I was trying to start it in a blizzard with -30F or so wind chill while doing van life. Sure would have been nice to have that working that night. 😀
Thank you sir. I tried new hi test gas, new synthetic oil, brushed the plug, burned off the spark arrestor, kicked it 3 times, blamed my wife. Then I watched your video. I’ve got my man card back.
I hope it works for you too! Let me know. If it doesn't work, you may need to clean the carburetor, but this appears to be a common problem, so fingers crossed for you!
I have one of these generators, it was hard to remove the spark plug, you have to take the valve cover off and then you find a black plastic cover, I removed this and discarded it, then the spark plug could be easily changed. Also had an overheating problem, solved this by leaving the side cover off.I also recommend removing the mesh baffle from the exhaust. Now it runs like a new one.
I have always felt like the knob on mine was a problem. Im going to tighten mine.. Thanks for that tidbit... Wondering if you may be able to point me in the right direction.. My generator is about a year old and has had alot of use. I recently changed the spark plug and oil and air filter its got new gas but it wont stay running... It will run about 10 to 20 min then cut off. The only thing i havent done is take the back off and cleaned that pipe with a wire brush.. Would that part of the exhaust keep it from staying running?
The part that interests me the most is that it runs 10 to 20 minutes, and then turns off. With that type of behavior, I might suspect the coil as a problem. Sometimes when coils have an issue, they will quit working when they get hot. You may want to double-check, but this might be the part you need based off of my interpretation of your description (no guarantee!): amzn.to/3lM0Q55
Thanks for sharing the knowledge. Exact same model, exact same problem. After watching this, I discovered my cable has the same play, but when I hold it closed, it still won't start. I guess I'll look at the carb next? Only used it a few times before though before we couldn't start it so I'm skeptical that that's it. Any other ideas?
Hahahaa YES! Thank you so much for making this. I had this f**#er started before the video was half over, and started up another identical one right after! I had already stared at these things for an hour before watching this video and you probably saved me a good 2 hours of frustration. Well done 👏
No, not with the way it is from the factory. You could potentially power up the screen and Bluetooth unit with an external 12vdc power source but I’ve never looked at the wiring in that way to see what would be involved.

The noise level is really only noticeable when running the AC and other appliances like the microwave, hair dryer, or coffee pot. It’s not huge like other ones and it has wheels so even at 90lbs, I can move it!

Maybe the carburetor needs cleaned? If you were to get another quiet inverter generator, I would recommend trying the Predator 3500 from Harbor Freight.
You could have a different problem. Try using starting fluid. If it attempts to run and then quits, your carburetor is clogged and needs cleaned or replaced. If starting fluid does nothing, you might not have spark.

That was so helpful thank you for your video
This was so helpful and resolved my problem 😊
Perfect! Ive had problems with this generator for years and almost pulled the plug on a new Honda. Thank you!
Sure seems like a common issue that a lot of folks experience. Mine had me thinking about a Honda too. Glad it was an easy fix and worked for you too!

About a year of your video and another testimony on me that your contribution still rockin ✌🏻 Thank you sir 👏🏻
Much appreciated! Thank you! Glad it worked for you too!
Oh heck yeah, this tip worked perfectly! I pulled on that sucker a good 40 times before finally throwing in the towel and heading to RUclips. Once I held the choke open it started on the first pull. Thank you so much!
Glad it worked for you too Josh! Simple fix once you get to looking at it.
Same here. First pull after holding it open all the way

That was the trick. As soon as I held it it started right up. Thanks a ton.
It's great to hear that this same thing worked for you too!
I bought a generator for 200 with 3hrs because somebody said it didn't start ifix this issue and it's working like a champ thanks boss

Fixed mine. Thank you. Been troubleshooting this damn thing for months.
Haha, awesome! I was frustrated with it for a while too. Glad it helped and thanks for sharing!
Thank you! That took care of that> It started first pull after I held the choke open the whole way like you did. Took care of lots of aggravation.

Thanks, just bought a brand new one and was wondering why it was so hard to start. Now I know
Shame it happened brand new. But on the bright side, it’s an easy fix! Glad this helped out.

Holy shite😤😤😤Thank you, Sir✌️
Let’s go buddy thanks for the tip!
Hope it solved the issue for you too!!
Thank you so much you save my night right now
Glad it helped, Victor! Did yours have the same problem?
Yes exactly the same
@@vervictoremanuel cool, good to hear you got it going!
This some good content.🙏🍾
Thanks, I hope it helped!
Good to the point video
Great Video.
Thank you very very much. This is what was wrong with mines. 😂
So glad it helped you out too!
Amazing! First pull
Excellent! Glad it helped! Thanks for the comment.
I tried holding the choke lever with my hand as far as it would go, but the generator still will not start. What else can I check?

Great video!
Thank you much! Hope it helped!
Brilliant!!! ThankYou
I am having an issue with the knob of the gen.. its really hard to (or feels) real hard to switch.. does anyone have any suggestions on how i can fix?
Good fault finding. Mine has no spark, I need to know how the HT system works.
I need to replace the drain screw, can I just take it out and put the new one? It won't mess up an internal carburator part? Thanks!
I think you should be able to replace that screw with no issue and no concern about inside the carb bowl.
@@TractorHoarders ok I will give it a try thanks!
Is there a way to power on the front led screen without starting the engine?
No, not with the way it is from the factory. You could potentially power up the screen and Bluetooth unit with an external 12vdc power source but I’ve never looked at the wiring in that way to see what would be involved.
Thank for you info 😊
That fixed mine. Thank you for the video!
So awesome! That's why I enjoy making these videos. Thanks for the comment.
Good video!!! Now i can fix mine!....
Glad I could help!!
Ryobi needs to fix that problem and improve the method of how hard it is to change the oil
Thank you!
Glad it helped!
Awesome thanks 👍
You bet!
Thank you!!!!!!!
You're welcome!!
Unfortunately that didn't work for me . Anyother reasons why mine won't start? Gas is fresh
If that didn’t work, you likely have a clogged carburetor that needs cleaned or replaced.
So you have to really choke it for it to start up
Exactly
How's it holding up?
Still working!
@@TractorHoarders you use it often?
@@jugado219 No, I don’t but I try and start it every 2-3 months just to make sure the gas doesn’t gum up

That sounds like a clogged carburetor to me. I would disassemble it and clean it out. It may have a clogged passage.
