  • This video will demonstrate how to change the oil on a Yamaha XT 250 trail bike. It will show the items needed as well as the mechanical procedures required to complete this service. A savings of $95.00 considering the shop rate of $120.00 labor and materials vs $25.00 doing it yourself. It's easy and fool proof! You can do it yourself.

    Today, when changing mine, I rocked the bike left and right, slowly, and quite a bit of more oil came out - just a tip that not all the oil comes out when it's only on the kickstand....

    I recently bought an XT250 for my kid...& am trying to have him start working on some maintenance
    procedures . Videos such as yours are a tremendous help vs. reading a manual...Thanks for sharing !!

      Happy to help! Enjoy your bike. Working on stuff for me started with my taking off and putting back on a cooking pot lid knob as a toddler. I actually doing it and I remember being fascinated with how it threaded on and off. My Mom told me I lacked the dexterity to manipulate it with just my fingers since I was so young. So I tossed the knob up in the air and let it land until it was the right way. Then I would screw it back on. Then back off again. She said I would play with it frequently. My father was a mechanical engineer and designer of Diesel locomotives for General Motors- Electro Motive Division, so I guess it's in my blood. He took me to the huge railroad roundhouses on Saturdays to ride the freight trains when he was trouble shooting some issue or another with a new model. It was a fascinating and rich experience for a grade schooler. And they often let me drive and blow the horn at crossings. That wouldn't happen now days. I started doing my own work on a mini bike he bought me at about age 11. Then lawn mowers he had and eventually his cars. Since then, I pretty much do all my own stuff. I do use a shop now and then if it's a really ugly job or if I'm unsure and just can't sort it out. It's rare though. I had a diesel shop do a Banks 5" stainless exhaust system on my Ford Powerstroke pickup. I just don't have a stall big enough to fit that monster nor a lift. Plus it fit the ugly job criteria. My next place will have a large shop and a lift. Anyway, I strongly believe getting a young son into mechanics is a really good idea. Good on ya, :0)

    thanks for the video very informative visual Mr. Miller. I plan on getting a xt250 as my starter bike and change my own oil. I suggest a skid plate on your bike, K&N air filter and a FMF performance muffler.

      @usethenoodle  7 лет назад +1

      Yes! I actually did the skid plate after the video. Great idea! Sorry I don't recall the actual brand I purchased. Its very tough and solid aluminum plate with flares to protect the case sides up a couple inches. I got about 700 miles in on the dirt this summer. I heard a few rocks hit that plate. Its a really great bike for what I like to do. Couldn't be happier with it.

      I appreciate the positive comment! Thanks Hamied. I'm just trying to add back a little to all the content producers who teach me new things everyday. With the learning opportunities available to me on RUclips from regular people, who has time for the twisted sewer wasteland of conventional television? Not me. I have a practically unused 56" television that may get turned on twice a year if that. But then I don't read fiction either. Only history. Regards!

    I own a 2021 xt250.. here in Florida the summers are very hot.. I'm seriously starting to wonder if there's a heavier weight oil I can use I'm also wondering if the valve adjustments are very important every 3000

    • @dustinswatsons9150
      @dustinswatsons9150 3 года назад

      Be safe valve clearance checks but I paid the dealer last time and I don't think they adjusted anything and on top of that it's a bunch of money just to have them check clearance and would they actually adjust it I don't know I did get the extended warranty and if I don't keep up with such a procedure it may void

      I’m not an authority on what oil to use other than the factory spec. Personally I just run the OEM per the service manual. No reference is made there to use differing weight oil based on warmer ambient temperatures. If you are worried about heat breakdown, Schaefer’s Specialty Lubricants makes a 20W-50 racing oil that is stable at 250 degrees beyond other brands. Obviously, that kind of heat will never be factor in your XT regardless of ambient Florida temps. But here is a link to it.
      www.schaefferoil.com/vtwin-oil.html
      As for the valve clearance, yes. I would at least check it per the listed service interval per the maintenance schedule in the owners manual. Adjust if need be. It’s a bit of a pain to remove all the pieces in order to get at the valve covers but it’s a good excuse to look things over at the same time. Good luck. And ya, I don’t trust the dealers to actually do what I ask. So I do it myself.

      I use 10W-50 here in Arizona. Lol the dealer told me if it’s runnig good and starting good then just check it at 4000 when I tried to take my 22 XT250 in for the 600mi value check

      @@dustinswatsons9150 I have no problems so far but I only have 1000miles on my bike half with OEM oil, whatever they used and half with my 10W-50. In the back of the service manual it gives you a chart with all the different oil weights and temperature ranges. The 10w-50 was the best choice according to that chart. -10 to 110F. I haven’t had my bike through a summer yet but here it reaches 117F.

    As a new owner of an XT250, this was very much appreciated! You explained the process clearly, and in detail. I've read that these bikes require regular 3000 mile valve adjustments, after the initial adjustment at 600 miles. It would be great if you could post a video. :)

      Will do! I did it once after this video was done. I made my own tool. I got the idea here on RUclips. Its pretty simple actually. I really only put 6-700 miles on this bike annually so it could be a while. But many of our fellow riders have posted on this same topic here. Just search it up. I appreciate the comments. Ride safe, brother. By the way I love my XT!

      Hey there Fynx, I'm sorry I'm just a regular guy...not a dealer or dual sport expert. I use this bike to romp around the forrest service roads where I ride my snowmobile in winter. So, I'm not totally familiar with the Serow? Mine is an XT250. I'm just going to step out there and say...if the model year is close to 2011, It's possibly or probably the same motor. Where are you from? Foreign bikes may differ to some degree. I'm very sorry, I'm not sure.

    • @usethenoodle
      @usethenoodle  5 лет назад

      @@75zl1 Thanks, it was just a guess on my part. I don't have a shop manual on the XT250 so I haven't studied any mechanical drawings of the motor. I can see doing preventative maintenance on it like valve tappet and chain adjustments, air filters and oil. As far as tearing the motor apart, I put so little miles on this bike it will probably never need it as long as I own it. At least I hope. I pretty much baby it. I ride it in the Mt Adams/Mt St Helens area of Washington State. It's a great trail bike with a lot of low end torque. If you can hang on to it, it will get you up there over the rocks and shale, mud and the rest. I'm happy with the bike. Since this video was made, I took off the factory blinkers and replaced them with small ones since the USFS requires them along with head and tail lights, mirrors and a license plate for "street legal" on their roads. I have been stopped and checked. I have seen people ticketed as well. I also put fold away mirrors on it just so I have them to meet the law. I modified a tank bag into a rear fender bag. There is a perfect flat spot there for a small bag. I used stainless bolts and wing nuts to attach it. I added an aluminum skid pan to protect the motor. Other than that, it's stock. It had been a lot of years since I had my last trail bike which was a new 1976 Suzuki PE 250 2 stroke they called Pure Enduro. When I got into riding snowmobiles in the same area, I became interested in going the same places in the summer with some snowmobile friends who also had trail bikes. It's really helped me learn the vast area we ride in winter. Great bike for a reasonable price.
