In my oppinion Windows and Linux shouldn't be "married" together. They are different things. Virtualisation is ok but not that.
imagine advertising VPN, Stop
Dude u have been featured in kali linux official website! Holy moly!
Using public Wi-Fi isn't that dangerous. HTTPS is enough in most cases. 6:03 what about VPN's ISP?
I use setupvpn. Still, keep doing what you're doing man! Great stuff!
Hey man, I really wanted to tell you thank you. I have been watching your server videos. I completed my A+ and Network+ certs about 6 months ago. I am now a Network Administrator. I have been working with VMware, Kemp load balancer, and raspberry pis. I wouldn't have even known where to start if not for your videos. So thank you for everything you do and I can't wait to dig more into your videos. You are awesome and keep doing what you are doing, you inspire me.
Man another great video, thanks for the heads up, I've been using WSL since it first came out and had no idea about a bunch of those features, so thanks for that!
I’m pretty excited about this, I’ll be doing this when I get home tonight! Thanks Chuck! 👍
If only this had been available a couple months ago... Great work, as always, & thank you for making things a bit more friendly for us n00bs.
For the people that want to use this for 'hacking'. For now its not possible to have a reverse shell or a small webserver of some sort through wsl2. Unless you do it with port forwarding, but thats just messy. Virtual machines are still the way to go
Absolutely. At the moment there is no possibility to set the network adapter into bridge mode so that the WSL2 VM gets a local IP address. So basic tasks like scanning your local subnet using nmap is not possible. Use a hypervisor as long as MS doesn't give you direct network access for your WSL VM. You can then connect to it using VNC to work with its desktop environment.
Anybody who is versed enough to "hack" understands that alread and they wouldnt be on a windows machine anyway
Thanks for the heads up!
@@travisgoesthere Imagine "hacking" in linux through windows LOLzzzz, i mean thats just.... absurd?
thanx for the suggestion
Joooooo, that’s sooo cool. I wondered what the Linux folder is for - now I know it and will use it 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
I've been using WSL for few years now because the company loaned laptop to me is using Windows and it really saved me a lot of headaches dealing with windows compatibility issues of the applications I need to use for my work.
thank you man trying to install it since yesterday and finally after watching your video i installed it within 15 minutes gonna chuck some coffee fs
Super Video Chuck Your videos are awesome And informative
Great rundown! Very easy to follow. I've been using WSL2 for a while but adding WSLg is a great enhancement!
do you think your pc slowed down after installing Linux on windows?
@@karimhabib5885 not appreciably. WSL1 was slower, but I've been impressed by WSL2's responsiveness. I have a Core i7 with 32gb RAM running in an NVME drive. Lower end HW may have different results.
@@karimhabib5885the Kali session in wslg isn't as fast as native though.
I dont think running gui on linux is a good enhancement especially for wsl
can't believe this, I've been struggling to get vm's running on windows 11 so this will be my go-to, thank you so much
Just a few handy keyboard shortcuts here: ⌨️
2:23 - Exit BIOS saving changes: just hit the F10 key
2:59 - Launching a program with elevated privileges: Ctrl + Shift + Enter
[works for Search (Win + S) results, things entered into the "Run" (Win + R) dialog (both programs and commands) and in the Explorer (Win + E)]
Maybe someone also likes being a keyboard ninja 😎✊
Keep it up chuck!! Proud of you
been looking for the "best" way to do this. very glad ive found this channel
You Teach with passion and love of what you like to do Chuck.
and I really appreciate all your hardworking Man...
Keep it high my Man...
Amazing! Seems a lot faster than running a VM on Windows with Linux as guest
Great video!! 👏👏👏
Great videos Network Chuck
Thanks for all your wonderful tutorials
Wow, for me that's the first pro for installing win11! That's pretty cool Chuck!😁👍👍👍🤟😎
Another way to enter bios on windows 10/11 is to hold down shift while hitting the restart button in the start menu. Select troubleshoot, then advance options and then UEFI firmware settings. This is useful when fast boot is enable and sometimes makes it difficult to boot to the BIOS.
Hey chuck. You make awesome videos. Easy to follow and your content is on point. I appreciate you
Great tutorial Network Chuck! Very informative too!
Love the videos Chuck! Especially loved the Closed Captions: "gobo" for Unbuntu and "Callie Lennox". Keep up the good work.
I literally installed W11 when it was in beta just for access to WSLg, its great.
Me too
What a story....
First.. Windows was lonely, didn't have anyone to talk to until Microsoft introduced Windows to Linux, Linux and Windows had a pretty good relationship, they talked to each other, they wrote to each other, messaged each other day and night, until they found each other in a very good relationship that they are now in love.
Their relationship just got stronger which got them engaged to each other that they are now super connected, and with that, therefore came WSL to gift each other after they had a pretty good date, which lead to an even stronger relationship and Windows just got older which turned it from 10 to 11, and they've been married happily ever after... Got their own things, Windows can now run Linux and Linux can change to look like Windows, and they have made a ton of babies now and having something which is called WSLg... One called Kali, one called Ubuntu, and so on and so fourth... You can now interact with them on Windows and they will act just like themselves.
And they lived happily ever after,
The End.
😄

Buddy, things are going in light speed Tempo and your channel is The best source of information on ongoing evolution in IT world, congratulations on your tireless effort to cover every aspect of this unbelievable experience, and thank you for that in the name of all of your grateful spectator-pupils!
Great info, energy and logical organization for a WSL2 quickstart. 👍🏽
I would strongly recommend against installing this if you plan on using VirtualBox in addition to this. You will end up breaking all of the virtual machines in VirtualBox and even uninstalling WSL won't help you. If you do this anyway and you want VirtualBox to work again, you will have to open "Turn Windows features on or off" from Control Panel (or just search for it) and then turn off everything related to virtualization and WSL.
WSL is far from a replacement of running a virtual machine, and some stuff won't work in this environment.
can't youse comand sudo apt install kali-win-kex -y for some rsason it says can't find pakeg kali-win-kex
yea this was with me also, but I found a solution for this...
Do this in Kali linux app:
1) sudo apt update
then wait to get the first command executed. then do second one: i.e.
2) sudo apt upgrade
then execute the command to install kali-win-kex. you will get success...
same
love the videos chuck always informative keep it up ☕
You have absolutely gotten me interested in Linux again. Thanks
Hey Chuck, not that you will actually see this and respond but, I was wondering what version of windows do you run as your daily driver? I see windows 10 on the screen to your left which is different than the one you use in your VM for these videos. Great video, Thanks!
I'd say most likely both. I know that I run Win 11 on my desktop since the beta came out on day 1, but to learn it before it becomes the new norm. Then on my other machines Windows 10 for now. Win 11 still has some bugs but I suspect they will be worked out in the next 6 months or less hopefully. Just like Windows 10 when it first came out. I still miss right clicking on the task bar to get to the task manager, hopefully they will bring it back in a future update.
Amazing!!!
Quick question: how will this affect performance? For performance, is it better to install apps on the linux side or windows side? Also, I've heard that Virtualization Based Security on Windows 11 can drastically decrease performance, that can remain disabled right?
you even have gpu acceleration via sriov
Use Linux as default operating system
It doesnt affect performance as I know. on almost every new PC's have virtualization enabled
and also VBS can be disabled by windows defender. It's there as core isolation
hyper-v does not decrese overall performance, the only downside is that you cant really use any other virtualization if you enable it. Virtualbox will run terrible slow, to make it fast again you have to turn off hyper-v but then wsl2 wont work. Other then that there is no issues and perrformance is great. Keep in mind that wsl2 is not really ment to be a secure layer. its mostly intended for developing and testing purposes
Thanks everyone for the help! Great to know!
This video made me Subscribe. Now I can use my favorite Linux distribution Powered by my 5950X. I'm gonna binge watch your videos now lol me being a quick learner, this channel is GOLD! Thanks for the great content
thanks man so much i could not get this to work for like the last week, finallly got everything installing and working
Instead of using kex --win -s you can run kex --ems --ip -s and open the Kali desktop in enhanced mode in RDP
Bro what should I do if it says unable to locate package kali-win-kex??
I’ve been using it for months and works great
Very interested topic❤️
Thank you Network Chuck ☺️🙂
love your videos chuck. between you and David Bombai I am trying to learn iinux as a new hooby in my retirement. thanks guys
What should I do if it says unable to locate package kali-win-kex???
Is it in same dir? , or maybe it has do something with enviorment variable it seems
Not sure tho
9months later but maybe it can help someone.
Before running this command juste run "sudo apt update" and next "sudo apt upgrade"
It should be perfect!
WSL ESL2 have both been available in Win 10 for a long time WSG is the only new one with Win11 But in my opinion it is restrictive running only the distro's that Windows has in their list or store there are workarounds but for me I think it is a great leap forward but at the same time we should be able to install any distro we want.
Distrod
You can already install any distro you want by importing with tar file.
Thank you so much chuck you have helped a lot in your teachings
What's the difference between vmware and WSL? I feel like I can do more customizing with vmware.
Main customizability would be allocating the hardware resources like cpu cores, ram and storage that you want… I would think getting a virtual box or VMWare and running kali on those be better for say ethical hacking purposes…
nobody needs customizing, the pc is there to use it, not to customize :))
Hey! I was wondering if there are any drawbacks in using WSL as compared to a full kali/linux installation... Do the drivers pose any issues?
the major drawback is : you are actually not using linux :D joke beside if you wanna learn linux its a good thing but if you want to use linux fully as an Administrator it's just like a VM. As an Linux Administrator I can tell you, it doesn't matter if you use Windows or Linux. They are just Operation Systems. Linux is free and Open Source and if you are really good you can manage the whole system. Windows is paid and you can't actually play/change with the system data.
Btw the drivers won't have any issues on WSL. Like I said its just a build in VM. And if you just want to learn Linux for Kali Tools stay on Windows and use WSL2. You also can still write Bash Scripts and run them too. (Bash Script is a must know for a ethical hacker. Still my opinion tho.)
@@tanawatjukmongkol2178 same here.. so I don't know either :D
@@Koddunyam thanks for your answer! I also found another drawback that you can't fiddle with network adapters and stuff as it doesn't show usbs and shows the wireless adapter as Ethernet... Was really hoping we could do that! I'm sure there's a workaround but stuffs too complicated and I don't have the time rn..
Also, I too use Linux on bare metal :)
@@Koddunyam Should wsl2 be fine for web development using Ubuntu? In work I use Virtual Machine so I'm experimenting at home on my win10 machine, thanks!
@@lardosian yep you can use WSL2 and create a web server like apachee etc. for yourself 👍
I loved this. I am using vm right now because I didn't know how to do this. You made my nerdy day...kids are natural stars 🤩
DUDE WTF, why have i been having to install on another part of a hard drive all these years, no one has ever said we could do this. you are blowing my mind.

There is a constant and easier way to get to the BIOS
Just hold LShift while pressing "Reboot" on Windows 10/11. Not Shutdown, Reboot. You´ll get sent to some blue screens, that pprompt you on what you want to do, and among these options is the Startup to BIOS.
No Timing
No Mashing F1-del at 20 cps.
I think WSLg was just a part of me going from Insiders Build to it's release.
David just uploaded an awesome Elon Musk/Does he know how the internet works video.
I love your guys' content. You're reshaping the IT and cyber security world.
Thank you so much for the last two years of content from yoy guys while I got my Cert⁷⁷⁷
got a filling today so i spent my time just doing this great timewaster good job nice content as always
Great job & assistance champion .... Coffee breaks was fun👌
Don't use WSL, it's pure torture, just go double boot and you'll get rid of most of the problems you'll have with WSL
love it , i am just running it . Chuck best man on youtube
i tried this yesterday, but virtual machine is better. Tnk u i learn abt wsl and wslg.. Ur geat always 🔥

How do I reach her out?
I used to use kali Linux as my main os but it was weird for my normal life. This helps with that problem thank you chuck
Thank you for the information!! I use one of your video to setup raspberry pi server!
Oh man, if I had found this video 1 month ago, I wouldn't have had to setup xRDP and saved so much time ! Thanks for sharing this feature !
Wow, you always got a new update I love this 😍 sweet my tummy 😂😆
Your video are super awesome you give more useful information that i learned in university , thank you , please keep make more videos
Under 500 club! Always look forward to your uploads Chuck.
pretty cool, will have to see what i like playing in more this or a VM
Thank You for this information! Now I have Kali in My Laptop,
An excellent job again way to go chuck
Another kick ass video man, appreciate it. With the VPN segment you should mention the 14 eyes. Extremely important when picking your VPN. Which by the way PIA is a non 14 eyes VPN which is perfect. (It means the U.S. and other countries can not get the data from the VPN provider).
Hey Chuck, you bring magic to life Man...
I am so happy every time I watch your videos...
I mean you make learning so fun with smile....
Thank you Kevine! This encourages the heck out of me!
chuck, when I try the installing winkex thingy, it gave me the following message:
@@NetworkChuck E: Unable to locate package kali-win-kex
Your selling tactics are amazing make me feel like I need a cup of coffee
You can also run kali linux sessions through powershell. Start a powershell session and run as administrator. When you start session run command . After that is installed successfully, run the command and this should start a kali session directly on powershell terminal.
Chucks always chucks 🔥🔥❤️❤️
Awesome ! Gonna have to try this out instead of running kali in virtual box.
You explained it well as always.
YT algo loves you... I watched two of your vids, now my feed is literally filled with your videos....
Thanks for this, one other good reason to update to Win11, does WSLG runs on Metal? I mean can I run CUDA inside it while leveraging my RTXes?
Biggg Fan bro 😍 Keep rocking !! 😎
Like Your Videos, Got Virtual Box installed on my Laptop, installed Ubuntu Linux,
Great video, i really enjoying it
Hi bro, I like you very much. You speak very well. It's both educational and entertaining. Tnx for good videos. I'm sorry that I don't know little English well. You made a video that told the difference between ubunts and kali.
I bought my first server a dell r720 it's so cool I'm excited.
Great movie. Another interesting thing that I know thanks to you.
Thanks for everything ! i use linux on a regular basis for debug and this is such a time saver. My life is complete now, windows with integrated linux interface, what a fucking time to be alive.
