I wear tie bars for my work suits - cannot live without them as the job I do requires lots of movement around a room of a day; cannot stand the idea of my tie swinging around constantly! Many thanks Hugo!
I watched this three times back to back and instantly bought the book for educating myself and being in the know. This isn’t something I really know much about historically, so getting the book was a no brainer as soon as you showed the book. I liked all the jewelry you showed and to me as a viewer it also says to me the wearer has a sophisticated elegance of style wearing the lapel and tie jewelry. Again Hugo appreciate the elegance of style knowledge and the context of it that you bring to the viewer that not only help us to be more elegant but also preserve the history of style elements. The only thing I would like linked or provided is other links if know to where we can find unique jewelry like this mentioned, as that’s not the easiest thing to find for good men’s jewelry like this. I will though try the link provided in the description on the web.
Yes Mr Hugo - Manners. I have noticed over the past 4/5 years a noticebale decline in manners, just simple 'thank yous' , holding a door open, allowing somone to go first; very simple small gestures of politeness or a kind word. These are the things that, if we lose, will make life that little more sour. Thank you to you and Sonia.
You are a Noble Hugo ,,no matter how old you are,,,you are just a true Gentleman ,,,Thanks for this interesting episode,,,,Love to you & Sonya from Cairo.
Thank you for the tips, sir! My favorite jewelry/accessories are cuff links. I have always shied away from tie tacks for fear of leaving holes in my tie. I loved how you put a small lift in your tie using a tie tack, so perhaps I will pick one up!
I think that being a lady and a gentlemen it’s so much based on being charismatic and charming than on what you wear. Hugo and Sonya are fascinating in that regard, their personality and communication skills are just an experience to behold (and take note of).
Thanks Giannis. We still need to produce many episodes on men's accessories: signet rings, but also bracelets, pinky rings, cufflinks, pocket watches chains etc. Stay tuned! Hugo
"Tie Chains" are my tie accessory. I get complimented on mine (almost all vintage finds) all the time. Its a simple thing but i found that since there not nearly as common as a tie bar or pin its catches the eye
Appreciate this episode. Thanks so much! JS and I have lost our Fathers too. Again our condolences and its beautiful to have something that reminds you of them you can carry with you. Small details can make a big difference. Cheers, my friends! 🇺🇲❤🇨🇵
I agree, many of us have been reluctant to use the tie pins (sounds better than tie tack) on ties (out of concern about possible damage to the tie), but I think I will give it a try... will allow me to wear a couple of inexpensive, yet very sentimental items. Also, I never thought of wearing them up so high on the tie, but that is a good look.
Great video Hugo.. I always feel that sometimes just an exceptional pair of cufflinks and a really nice watch is enough..You see people with badges Tie pins and shirt bars . It looks a bit cluttered.. Love your channel. Best wishes from Glasgow Sir.

Fantastic video! Any possibility of a future video on cufflinks? Probably 80% of my dress shirts are French cuff shirts and I really enjoy to play with my cufflinks and I would love to hear Hugo's knowledge on cufflinks.
Always a good show! Interesting the mix of the gray suit and the green tie! I love to use green ties! Best regards from Brazil and luck everyone in the fight against Covid

Hi Hugo, I have pins with stem as well and I've worn them on my tie and used them to hold my tie to my shirt or even give the shirt some movement by lifting it up. On certain ties though it has made a permanent piercing so I've made conscious decisions to always wore those ties with same pin. I also admire how brave you are to stick stems through your lapels. I haven't the courage to do that. I just bring my coat to my tailor and have them add the little thread as you have in yours which takes them a minute or two. Ah, here's an idea for a possible next video. Maybe show us how to add that thread in our own lapels?
I have two silver tie bars! The function of a tie bar is that the tie does not move, so fasten the tie bar and tie in the shirt between the fourth and fifth button of the shirt. Cheers
Great video and very informative! The only thing I would add is maybe a pocket watch and chain on the lapel, I like that look a lot and I have been seeing more often
Yes Alexander. This episode was solely focusing on tie and lapels jewelry. We are planning other episodes on cufflinks, rings, bracelets and, of course, chains for pocket watches. All my best, Hugo
I'm a fan of using a tie bar to give my tie a little flair, a lift, and a certain 'je ne sais quoi', pardon my French ;-) But it's a nice way of distancing myself from the 'footballers' ties' look. Thanks again :-)
Great episode, i allways use a red carnation when i go to bull fighting events, i didn't know about the meeting of the colors, fortunetly i never used a withe one!
The "meaning" of the colours greatly varies from a culture to another. I would be curious to know why wearing a red carnation at a bull fight. Anyone ? Hugo
@@SARTORIALTALKS In Spain and Mexico it is customary to throw carnations to the bullfighter or the bull (when is pardoned) after a good and beautiful task. So for that Classic gentleman usually wear a red or sometimes withe carnation on the lapel.
Thanks Hugo for all these guidelines. I really love to wear tie pins but struggle a lot to find sellers in Paris. Oh and the suit your wearing is outstanding!
Thank you sir, I advice you take a look at Le Loir en Papillon e-store (our friend Mickael Loir). Great choice there. Cheers, Hugo (my suit is by Cifonelli bespoke).
Hugs another great video. I think tie pins, tie bars, and lapel pins all look great, but they are not my style. I wear braces and find that anything but a watch, and cufflinks is to much.
Great episode as always Hugo! Some questions I have, if you'd be so kind to give your opinion: How about a tie bar and collar bar combination? Would you consider it too much? Do you consider the pocket square in the same way you consider your jewellery, or would you say its an integral part of a well thought tailored outfit? Thank you in advance. You guys are absolutely fantastic!
Dear friend, I wouldn't wear two bars at the same time, but it's very subjective of course. And yes I consider a PS as an accessory like a piece of jewelry. And as a rule of thumb I try to stick to two accessories maximum. All my best, Hugo
Thanks Diego. We'll dedicate several episodes on Jewelry for Gentlemen: one on cufflinks, another one on rings and bracelets etc. Stay tuned! Best, Hugo
I have a question. Can i wear cufflinks without a jacket? I live in india and it gets hot here so we can't wear jackets but i just love cufflinks but i can only wear them in winters when I'm wearing a suit. Could i wear them without a jacket and wearing a cufflinks on a french cuff without a jacket wrong? Or can i just use that as my personal style and just wear it whenever i feel like.
If I may just make a comment on a simple observation of your attire in the video M Jacomet, the green in the tie and the red in the pocket square give an impression of Xmas as they are the colors of that holiday. I don’t know if it was intentionally on your part or if you are aware. Otherwise great video as always and lovely suit
Would you wear a lapel pin with cufflinks? Or would that be adding too many accessories? I noticed you were going for barrel cuffs for this video. Thanks again Hugo and Sonya.
Hey Jim. It depends on the size of the cufflinks (discreet or not), but generally speaking yes I would. In this case I may suppress the pocket square in order to remain "balanced". All my best, Hugo
Dear Hugo and Sonia, thank you for the new video, it is wonderful. I believe that guidelines and traditions are now more necessary than ever to give us identity. I will have to get a white carnation, I would never have considered it before but now there is a good reason for it. (A good topic for a future video is those traditional guidelines, it's just a suggestion) Excuse me, my English is not very good.
Thanks Jorge! And your English is very good. For the flower you should take a look at the Cinabre website. Excellent quality and great choice. Cheers my friend, Hugo
Hugo, I love how you keep bringing up how coarse and vulgar our world has become. Not enough people point this out enough. It goes hand-in-hand with being a refined gentleman. You have inspired me to continue dressing for the occasion in a world where most men prefer to dress like teenagers. These “men” are like fruit that has never ripened. Love your content! Keep it coming! ☝️🥴👍
Not a fan of jewelry but I enjoyed this video a lot. Question regarding your ensamble. "Blue and green should never be seen" I was told once in London. I don't know where that comes from but I wonder if there's true to that, I think it works very well in this case, perhaps because of the crisp white shirt. Just curious on your thoughts about this combination.
Pocket knives are great pieces of jewelry, Case Knives are beautiful! Polished bone, polished blades and engraving. Also, if you drive a Porsche, Ferrari, Jaguar, any luxury car, the key fobs can be beautiful accessories as well!
Ngl I was hoping this was gonna show me about necklaces and bracelets but I learned about jewelry I didn’t know existed because I don’t have cloths with lapels
I'm fascinated by the symbolism of red and white carnations since I've never seen it mentioned anywhere. Is it from the English like the brooch guideline? Could you, please, provide a source that tells me more about the origins of this tradition?
Dear Harja, this tradition is particularly vivid on mother's day. You can find many resources on the web explaining this, like this link : answerstoall.com/miscellaneous/what-color-flower-do-you-wear-if-mother-is-deceased/ Cheers, Hugo
I absolutely love this episode and didn’t realize that I needed it until I saw it. As usual, good sir, you have answered so many questions but also have sparked another in me. If I am required to wear eyeglasses to see, is it beneficial to stay away from a certain type of jewelry? I have been cautious to try it because of a warning you had stated in previous episodes about too many accessories. I do know that when Sonya Glyn, your lovely wife, had brought it up in that same episode. While they are necessary, are there any general guidelines to avoid looking like “a Christmas tree”?
Dear Friend, the rule is simple : don't overdo it. Spectacles are not exactly accessories if you need them to see better, so you can still indulge a couple of accessories like a pocket square and a tie or lapel pin. When we speak of a Xmas tree, we mean people who are wearing too many accessories at the same time and who draw attention to their shiny accessories more than to themselves. Cheers! Hugo & Sonya
Dear Jonathan, this episode was focusing solely on tie and lapel jewelry. By the way if you take a look at the last episode on this channel (the one just before this one), you'll see Sonya wearing a magnificent tab collar. All my best, Hugo
Great video! I just have something small to add as I am a Goldsmith. Palladium is actually a very precious metal, quite similar to platinum. You might have thought of Rhodium plating which is a thin layer of rhodium that can be applied to any base metal or precious metal.
Wearing a pin on the lapel should be reserved for a club pin, an organisation or regiment. And wearing something in your button-hole - it could be mistaken for a military or civilian decoration. But apart from that a good video!
Hugo, I have a question... I live in Texas.. It's hot 364 days out of the year. I sweat, and really struggle with keeping my shirt collars clean. In addition to some Organic degreaser I use on the fabric, I want to start wearing a scarf, sort of like a crevat. Tying a crevat or a scarf can be very tricky. I would like to find pins, like Tie Tacs, but need a long pin to go all the way through the fabric. Maybe a long stem might work, but they are hard to find. Are there tie Tacs or pins with long stems? What are they called? Ty.
Dear Daniel, they are generally called "tie pins" (but with a stem). Like this one for example: www.victiquecufflinks.co.uk/product/handcrafted-tiepin/ All my best, Hugo
I make jewellery and love men's jewels. I'd rather leave home naked than without a piece of jewellery. My neckpiece is always first on, last off. Sorry Coco! I wear jackets only so I can wear lapel pins, and our climate is rather warm. The goldsmith Kevin Coates has had a huge influence on my jewellery style.
Dear Hugo, I noticed that you’ve picked up a lazy habit unfortunately common to far too many native English speakers, particularly in recent times. You say, "There’s many ways…." As you know, ‘there’s’ is a contraction of there and is. One wouldn’t say, "There is many ways." Since you’re referring to a plural ("ways"), one should say, "There’re many ways…," or simply, "There are many ways." I’ve long struggled with French conjugations, so I empathize with you. :)
very very discreet and refine just like the hand Symbolism you use in all your videos ;) ..... good thing I have psychic protection against your ** kind** I see you Gentlmen.....

Excellent. I loved how discreet a gentelman's jewellery is supposed to be but that stuff about brooches on a particular side, that stuff left me cold.
Same here Douglas, but some traditions are just nice to know. All my best, Hugo
I guess elements as rings or bracelets for example is perhaps for some other episode.
Exactly. Also a special episode on cufflinks. Hugo
So useful!
I'm very happy to read this Mohammad! Best, Hugo
Should we expect a 'special' on signet rings? ;)
Yes you should my friend. Hugo
What about collar bars and pins ?
Dear Jonathan, this episode was focusing solely on tie and lapel jewelry. By the way if you take a look at the last episode on this channel (the one just before this one), you'll see Sonya wearing a magnificent tab collar. All my best, Hugo
@@SARTORIALTALKS Oh great !!! Thank you for the answer and for all the advices and knowledge you share :)
Hello. Would you consider watches as being jewelry for men?
Yes of course Kabir. Cheers, Hugo
Great video!
I just have something small to add as I am a Goldsmith. Palladium is actually a very precious metal, quite similar to platinum. You might have thought of Rhodium plating which is a thin layer of rhodium that can be applied to any base metal or precious metal.
Fascinating and helpful; thank you for your professional input. Hugo
Sublime green
Merci Antoine. It's a grenadine tie by Calabrese in Napoli. Cheers, Hugo
Yes I need to resources for shirt studs, great episode.
Many thanks my friend. Hugo
Great 👍🏻
Thanks Hans Peter ! Cheers, Hugo
Wearing a pin on the lapel should be reserved for a club pin, an organisation or regiment.
And wearing something in your button-hole - it could be mistaken for a military or civilian decoration.
But apart from that a good video!
Dear Ian, I believe it depends on the countries. All my best, Hugo
Montblanc 146?
Hugo, we need daily content sir! Even if it's five minutes or something. Great video by the way
Dear Leo, we are considering producing daily (or at least three times a week) content for our members of our Patreon page. Stay tuned! Hugo
Like this one for example: www.victiquecufflinks.co.uk/product/handcrafted-tiepin/
All my best, Hugo
Cédric Villani have spiders or insects as accessories on his suits. His extravagant but a very good mathematician.
Hahaha, I was not a fan of his big spiders to be honest! Cheers, Hugo
👏👏👏
I make jewellery and love men's jewels. I'd rather leave home naked than without a piece of jewellery. My neckpiece is always first on, last off. Sorry Coco! I wear jackets only so I can wear lapel pins, and our climate is rather warm. The goldsmith Kevin Coates has had a huge influence on my jewellery style.
Great mention on Coates. Thanks for your reply and perspective. Hugo
Hey guys, anyone from London? I've started my sartorial journey and I'm looking for a community to join
It's a good question Jerome--any luck? Hugo
The stripes on your right lapel don't match!
Indeed they don't my friend, and for a good reason you can read on our blog here : www.parisiangentleman.com/blog/why-align-oneself
All my best, Hugo
Bring back crowns!
Haha not sure about that my friend! Cheers, Hugo
rare stones are like grades "stolable by democraties". It's a fact. So it is sacred also, for those who understand militar & sportive facts.
Thanks Stéphane, for the perspective. Hugo
Thanks Cary. I do my best with English, but I know I'm still not perfect. Hugo
very very discreet and refine just like the hand Symbolism you use in all your videos ;) ..... good thing I have psychic protection against your ** kind** I see you Gentlmen.....
Dear Simon, I must admit I don't understand your message. Could you clarify please ? Cheers, Hugo
You look as if you run a FTSE100. M.
Thanks my friend but thank God I don't 😂! Cheers, Hugo
