By popular demand, here is my translation, arrangement and performance of the Palästinalied in the Gothic language. I was a little hesitant to make this one as it doesn’t really make sense historically (Gothic was extinct by the time of the crusades), but… it’s such a wonderful language and it was really fun, albeit exhausting, to translate and make. Also, who doesn’t want more versions of Palästinalied?
It was quite laborious to translate, and I wasn’t able to preserve the original meaning of every line while keeping the rhyming signature, but I am quite happy with my solutions. Some of the rhymes in the Gothic had to be half-rhymes to strike a balance between meaning and structure.
I am using quite a conservative pronunciation of Gothic which preserves a lot of the original diphthongs which merged together at a later date.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy! Please subscribe, like the video and leave a comment if you did as it helps me out a lot. You could also donate if you are feeling extra generous: buymeacoffee.com/theskaldicbard
My intention is exclusively to teach history and languages through song. I do not condone, endorse or seek to glorify violence.
Many thanks for your kindness, as always.
    Lyrics are in the description.

    Sehr geehrter Skaldenbarde,
    Hochachtungsvoll,

Bless your work, specially the translation required to make such an extensive song possible. Despite the ahistorical setting, I like the fact that this shows both how archaic Gothic was, compared to any Germanic languages it was with or that came after, and the moments where words in modern german or english can be found, but with a different meaning, illustrating that difference. ¡Cheers!

Almost nothing is known about Crimean Gothic. It is almost completely unattested. If it actually did exist until the 18th century, it was likely not the same language as the Gothic of the 5th century.
The Crimean Goths almost certainly intermixed with Tatars and if they did speak a remnant of Gothic, it was not ‘real’ Gothic. It was probably an islamised creole form of Gothic.

@@heiliger_sturm yeah, but as a LITURGICAL language, crimean goths did preserve the Gothic 'proper', since we found Gothic attested in Crimea

@@Yoyërcompany since when is Gothic attested after the 8th century? I’ve never heard of this, ever. Are you suggesting fragments of actual Gothic from the 17th century have been found? I don’t think you’re getting this right.
Crimean Goths mixed with muslims almost certainly (they must’ve been pretty desperate), and there is no way Gothic as a language would’ve survived Islam (only semite languages and Turkish survive Islam, of course, everything else is wiped out).

    • @Yoyërcompany
      @Yoyërcompany Месяц назад

@@heiliger_sturm they found a sample of Gothic in Crimea of IX century, so it's not impossible that at the time of the Crusades cr. goths would still use Ulfila's Gothic as a liturgical language
