  • A Louisiana teacher who questioned a school superintendent’s salary raise was removed from a school board meeting, then handcuffed, and the incident was caught on camera. In an exclusive interview with NBC’s Tammy Leitner, Deyshia Hargrave says it’s “sad” that it took a woman being forcibly removed from a meeting to get people engaged. She says her students who saw the video were “fine, so I’m fine.”

      If he truly felt concern for his family, he would take a lower pay raise, and give the rest to the teachers. People like this are all show, because the all mighty dollar speaks louder then his true love for his family.

    • @AltimaNEO
      @AltimaNEO 6 лет назад +31

      Hes a total piece of crap. If you watch the interviews with him, he doesnt show any concern for the teachers, or apologize for what happened. Instead he just defends his raise because he doesnt make as much as other overpaid superintendents.

    Superintendents should NEVER ask for a raise when his teachers have not had one in 10 years.

    • @bverji
      @bverji 6 лет назад +3

      You do realise that teachers work on a scale? That individual teachers do get raises; it is just the scale that doesn't increase. I am not suggesting that the raise he got was reasonable, but saying that he shouldn't get a raised because of teacher salaries isn't comparing apples to apples.

    • @MaStorm529
      @MaStorm529 6 лет назад +8

      bverji I think it does when he's taking credit for the stats the teachers are bringing in for him to even have access to a raise because of those stats.

    • @bverji
      @bverji 6 лет назад +1

      Do you know that he doesn't deserve any or most of that credit? That is a large assumption. have you looked at the trends? And, regardless him taking credit for the increase in no way influences what I said previously. Teachers do actually get raises based on where they are on the scale, and what they do to progress on that scale. It is just that the scale hasn't changed. That is not the same thing as comparing the salary of a single contracted employee.

    • @bverji
      @bverji 6 лет назад +6

      The money issue and the arrest issue are completely different. The officer was out of line. She did nothing wrong. She pulled her arm back because the officer was out of line in attempting to arrest touch her. Even if he had a right to arrest her (which he didn't) if she isn't a danger he is required to tell her what he is detaining her for and give her a chance to comply. the officer is the one who broke the law, not the teacher; which is why the prosecutor refused to press charges.

      They probably get raises when too many teachers retire, and they can't convince anyone to move to grand rapids. They will have to lure teachers in by increasing their pay, then hope they stay not just use it for something to put on their resume.

    • @CivilDream
      @CivilDream 6 лет назад +8

      Adam Perez Well the board is not the problem the problem is that the teachers didn't have the rights to vote or to speak. If they were given that option than this would have never happen. But, they weren't and the board was so technically it was more of a dictatorship than a democracy.

      The board voted on an absurd raise and attempted to silence a stern, yet civil, voice that they had only seconds before given permission to speak about exactly what she was speaking about. Then, they proceeded to not say anything as the officer removed her from the room for, again, speaking in a stern yet civil voice about what she had just been given permission to speak about. The board had every opportunity to NOT to any of those things, but they did, so they are the problem.

    • @bryceschneider3406
      @bryceschneider3406 6 лет назад

      tigergreg8 Is this really a big deal to be talking about. Women and men were at the meeting and only the woman complained about her pay.. I don’t know the full details of her arrest but it looks not right but maybe I’m wrong, maybe she did do something. This isn’t about women’s rights or any rights, this is only about a unjust decision about a police officer. There are always someone who’s racist or sexually discriminates but does that mean a movement should begin.. does that mean the majority is discriminating... does that mean I believe no ones equal? ( no, everyone is), so this whole situation is just stupid about “women’s rights”. Also does that mean if a police officer wrongfully does something, was it for sure their fault or was it a mistake with a call or a look alike gun that he thought was gonna threaten him.. no one actually knows unless there’s 100% evidence.

    • @bverji
      @bverji 6 лет назад +3

      Sorry, Bryce but that is a BS post, there is almost nothing in this universe that has 100% evidence. And, to suggest that you can only make a judgment about something if you can prove every possible scenario 100% is an actual argumentative fallacy. it is called the Argument of Ignorance.

      Unfortunately that is how more and more town council, county commissioner meetings have been going for the past couple decades. It was only time before we saw it happen at a school board meeting too. Teachers are partially to blame because they have been participating in the system for the past 50+ years that indoctrinates in school and promotes submission to authority at all times even if the teacher, principal is wrong. Not allowed to question the teacher or staff you must accept what the teacher is told to teach as truth be it in academics or social values.

      Henry Lafontaine, Contempt of what? Is that a courtroom or a judge? . Trespassing? If trespassing why wasn't she removed before the meeting? Was the board meeting open to the teacher and the public? The superintendent is the one that I find contemptible. It looks to me like he had her arrested for protesting his raise. That is my opinion until I know the answers to the questions. Hopefully, I won't get arrested for voicing it. It reminds me of the Corporations and the CEO's that make millions while their employees have 2 and 3 jobs or collect foodstamps.

Administrators are getting paid way too much, driving fancy cars, while their teachers are emptying their pockets to fund their classrooms. 30K try 82K in another video they break down the salaries at the school. The absolute top salary for a teacher with a Ph.D. was 57K and change. I have no issue what anyone makes, if you can get it good for you but don't have the woman arrested when she calls out the hypocrisy of giving the administrator a raise when you have not given your teachers a raise in years. The nerve of the superintendent to say when is the right time to give him a raise is the funniest part of this. The answer, when you give your staff a raise! You are the number 6 school because of your teachers be kind enough to recognize them for there efforts.

      1. You don’t even know the amount of raise he got and what his original pay was.
      2. It’s selfish to say he’s a crybaby.
      3. The woman was wrongfully arrested but spoke out in a disorderly and disrespectful way. Still shouldn’t have been arrested, deemed unconstitutional.
      4. Teachers get three months off the year.
      5. Superintendent does not.
      6. You don’t even know all the conditions to say if it was right or wrong for the raise, there’s not real evidence to support either sides raise; theirs always two sides to one story that isn’t being told because people wanna be right! The school district doesn't have any control over if charges are brought or not. That is completely up to the prosecutor. As soon as the prosecutor saw the video he immediately refused to press any charges and that had nothing to do with the school board.

      Can't be too high if teachers haven't had a raise in 10 years and they were given a pay cut so that an assistant to the superintendent could be hired. You do know being ranking 49th for the second year in a row as one of the worst in educational ranking of all states is not a good thing.
      Teachers are working with what parents are sending to school. It is time to listen to teachers about how to make the system work for kids.
      For Vermilion Parish to be ranked 10th in the state of Louisiana is not really a big deal. Thank goodness for South Carolina which was ranked dead last.

      ___________Actually, technically, it's not a free speech issue if the board has rules in place, like most do, that limit comments from the people to being on-topic. That's not unreasonable nor is it unconstitutional. However the opinion of the Chairman that her comments weren't germane to what they were voting on was a poor judgement call and obviously he just wanted to shut her up for his own personal reasons. That's where the problem started. He's not fit for public service, he's a selfish little man and the people should force him to resign.

    I'm not one to comment much on anything, but wow. This is wild. I understand superintendents have a lot on their plates and should be paid accordingly, but take a step back. Almost no teachers getting a raise in a DECADE??? Educators being underpaid is absolutely outrageous but happens way too often. She had every right to react the way she did because people like her are the ones actually doing the work and making a difference. Teachers, instructors, professors- they are the ones educating the future. They are the ones changing the lives of children each and every day. They are the ones that rightfully deserve the raise. Like another comment said, the right time for the superintendent to get a raise is when the teachers get one too.

    Follow the rules. Where are these supervisors following the rules. I will tell you this, things like this will never go unnoticed or forgotten. Those who execute unlawful power and wrongful authority over others will indeed face consequences when they go back to the other side.
    A couple extremely important questions that will be asked of you, How did you treat others, and did you treat them fairly?
    Were you honest in all of your business dealings? This board failed miserably.
    When a teacher, who's rightfully concerned, and standing up for so many others, is arrested and treated, in my way of seeing it, (abused) for speaking up, then those who show forth their so-called power, will have to answer to it.
    A raise of $30,000 when one teacher there is probably not making much more then that , because of being ignored financially , for others gain, well, I don't want to be in your shoes. Enjoy the money now, because you won't have it later.

      margaret thomason Do you still truly believe that crap? Yes, there are still racists out there, but people aren't lynching blacks. Why? Because that's illegal. Also for your information, I hope you know that the Democrats were the ones who had slaves in the past and tried to secede from the north. Trump didn't magically make America a racist country within a year.

    • @margaretthomason7342
      @margaretthomason7342 6 лет назад

      Assassin San
      This may be a surprise to you but lynching was never legal, nevertheless hundreds were lynched, churches and homes bombed and set on fire. In fact it was the accepted way to control an entire race of people and kept them in their place through fear.
      And, yes, the data does show an increase in hate crimes, directly because Trump has made it more comfortable for racist to show their cowardly faces and say what others are thinking once again. Two out of 5 of the largest number of mass killings happened in 2017. Racism was on full display in Charlottesville where a protestor was killed.
      Racism as been alive and well in America for a long time. But Trump has fueled hatred based on religion, against the handicapped, minorities, with policies that favor the rich over the poor and others. So, yes, the greatest leaders of our country have set the tone and embraced policies that tried to include all people and left the country better than they found it.
      Finally, what is the source of your information concerning Democrats being the ones owning slaves. Sounds like a myth, since most southerners did not even own slaves. History books showed poor Whites regardless of party supported slavery as much as poor and middle class White today support tax reduction even though they will least benefit.

They stomped on her 1st Amendment Right to freely speak about the topic at hand. AND SHE IS RIGHT! Teacher's work their heart out for our kids. They deserve better pay. Last year over 600 million was spent on the military. Our men and women who serve deserve to be well payed, but if it weren't for teachers there wouldn't be anyone in the military to defend our rights. Look at the raises they have for congress and the breaks they get! These teachers deserve so much more than they get. Do superintendents deserve to have a raise? Sure, BUT, teachers deserve them too.

      Thats was like 50% accurate. A. It wasn’t about sexism it was about greed. B. The Military would definitely exist without teachers C. Over 95% of The 600 million spent on the military goes towards equipment, planes, weopens, etc. not their salary D. Teachers don’t deserve higher pay than Military officers. E. The main goal of the military is not defend our rights to establish dominance as a world power. Isolationism instead of interventionism would do more to protect your rights.

      The Beast You missed my point entirely. I said that what they did was sexist not that sexism was what it was about. The money that went to the military could've gone elsewhere like schools and teachers, scholarships, paid the national debt down, something other than weapons and planes. ALSO I never said that teachers should be paid more than those in the military, I simply said they should be paid more.

      First, by saying they are sexist you pretty much said the problem is sexism, which is wrong. She was the one that brought up the topic as an issue, where as everyone else merely agreed. This means she is seen as the cause of this now embarrassing situation for the board, so they chose to remove her. This never involved anyone being sexist, just simply corrupted.

    • @kristinmcnally7215
      @kristinmcnally7215 6 лет назад

      Tuan Le This board has a history of removing only women who question them therefore... they ARE sexist. This woman was not showing any disrespect, she did not raise her voice to them, she was recognized by the board to speak about the topic at hand, and when the superintendent began to respond to her the board told him to be quiet and had her forcably removed. She caused no problems, she just asked a question.

    Well its not fare that the teachers don't get a good pay. Enough with higher position people in the work place keep the money. I know people in high position where they don't have the experience but do have family members in the work place who put them in those positions. When people with the most great experience can't get those positions. Sad to say but you have to know someone to get a really good position in a work place (any company). Corruption all the way in our schools!

    His district does so well BECAUSE of his teachers. As a former teacher, I will never understand how such an important role in our society is paid so little. And it COSTS teachers to teach. Teachers pay out of their earnings for get what they need for the classroom, lessons, etc. I'm sure that man works hard, but for the teachers not to have received a raise in a decade?! His $38k raise is insulting.
