Buying Everything We Can Afford | How We Replace Freedom With Clutters

  • Hi there, I'm Eileen. As a luxury minimalist, I believe the power of being selective and intentional. We all have things that we enjoy. For some, it might be designer bags or shoes. For others, it might be travel and gourmet food. I'm an advocate for enjoying what we value, the caveat is that we're not compromising our financial future. For most of us, this translates into NOT paying for absolutely everything just because we can afford it. Yes, I'm talking about the $6 takeout coffee we don't care for, the $600 high heels we don't like to wear, and the $15 souvenirs we never look at again. The way I see it, basing any purchase solely on affordability is the perfect recipe for accumulating cutters and losing our sense of priority xx

Love the fresh haircut! I’m with you on packing my lunch every day and not paying for manicures. I do my own manicures, pedicures, house cleaning, yard work, etc because I don’t want to spend the money on something I’m perfectly capable of doing myself, but I love an overpriced designer bag. 😂

We have to create our own opportunities. My brother broke his neck and never finished high school and never went to college. Today he is a successful business owner making high six figures. He and his wife own a beautiful home and have a lovely family. Don’t let school get in the way of your education Mark Twain once said.

I really enjoyed this discussion. Gosh! so much I could say! The idea of curation, really becoming clear about what is important in our unique lives, the recognition that sometimes our shopping covers a deeper longing that is non-material--this is a lesson I learned years ago as I sat outside a Marshalls, wondering what I was doing there yet again--it was an almost daily occurrence that I would find myself shopping--I realized I was lonely, so I called a girlfriend. I sat on the phone in the parking lot. When I finished the call, I drove home without going into the store. I began to ask myself "What am I feeling?" when I felt the urge to shop or have a second glass of wine. Little by little, I began to see some of the underlying non-material needs I had, and found more rewarding ways to fill them. Like going for a long walk, sitting outside with a book, spending time with friends and family, or seeing that I have a healthy savings for my future. I am still very much a work in progress, but through your discussions and the comments I see that I am not alone in seeking something more meaningful--but still acknowledging that I love beautiful things. Thank you.

I suspect the mean comments were more because you touched a nerve with these people and they haven't found a good balance in their lives. Years ago I read a book called "The Tightwad Gazette" and the opening chapter talked about how everyone's reasons for saving money on some things was going to be different for each individual. Maybe you wanted to invest that money, buy a home or own a fleet of snowmobiles. It's a personal choice we each can make and just because we CAN afford a specific item doesn't mean we HAVE to buy it, nor are we being hypocritical by not buying it. It's just a conscious choice.

For sure. People take every comment or observation as an attack. But as you say, it just tells us they are hearing the message ‘loud and clear for themselves. So like ancient Kings, they attack the messenger. Whereas I just feel excited by the possibilities for my own life, and interested in the ones that don’t apply to me. So sad tho’ that people lash out with nastiness and rudeness.

  • @VBoo459

I think that commenter was right, if you can’t afford Starbucks then why buy designer bags. However what they missed is that even when you can afford both, doesn’t mean your money needs to go there. If it’s not worth buying then I won’t buy it. I don’t care to use my money on Starbucks even if it’s 1p because I make better coffee at home. However I’ll buy a designer bag because I can afford it and I value it. It’s not only about “affording” things, It’s about value like you said. I don’t care to spend £££ on 5* hotels, I focus more on 9.5+ guest rated hotels. I do my own manicures (because I can and I don’t want to use my money or time for someone else to do it) but I SPLURGE on good, comfortable and beautiful pair of shoes!

An opinion isn’t the point. It’s a rude comment. Completely unnecessary, and very undisciplined, as it says more about them than anyone else. We are good at telling others how to be, whereas if we just listen and draw in what is useful, we’d all win. If it doesn’t impact us, why does it matter if someone else buys starbys even on credit? It’s so lacking a boundary.

Eileen! :D Thank you, as always, for keeping me grounded. Thanks to you, I've been able to stop the shopping train. I can't say I'm not tempted, but now that I have my "designer dozen" I know where the line is drawn. I'm currently on a no-buy to keep my focus on my finances this year. It has been a journey into and now out of the luxury world, but I realized something about myself, it is really true that human desire is unlimited. We have to be the ones who define those limitations to sculpt the life we want.
Keep being your amazing self and thank you for sharing your thoughts. I look forward to your videos, every upload, every time.

    Well said Eileen.
Just because I can afford luxuries does not mean I can justify buying it.
I prefer to be financially debt free.
At the end of the day these designer bags are just functional.
I do enjoy and admiring well made bags as eye candies.
I am contented with what I have.
Influencers keep complaining about why they cannot stop spending on frivolous things and worse still they are in debt.
Some had realised it and soon all luxuries no longer appeal to them.
So glad they have opened their eyes and they are at a better happier place.

I'm the same way: I only have a few hundred to spend on clothes each year while I build my business, but I will spend it all on 1-3 vintage pieces (usually 1930s/1940s slips/lingerie). I really value and appreciate each one, since I know it will get worn. In fact, the last silk slip I bought is a duplicate of the one I wear multiple times I week -- I absolutely know it will also be used every single week.

im with, just because we can we shouldnt. the only things i splurge on are my bags, getting a hair cut, and mods on my car. i have a 20yr old car! our home is very modest and small. i do my own mani/pedi, home maintenance (im very handy), yard work etc. when we travel we do hostels because we dont spend that much time in the room. we do economy air travel. we also dont spend much on food, our grocery budget is strick! we both have our vices/aka expensive things we like to spend our money on and those things arent it. i even work part time at a department store so i can get a discount on clothes & shoes.

My material things are good quality clothing pieces like cashmere sweaters. Non-material wise, time for my family and my mental health.

I decided to cut out those material stuff and spend my money on travel with the family, investments and jewelery/watches as they retain value better than bags. As for bags, I bought the classics and is enough - no need to chase the next fashionable thing.

Material - clothes and shoes of good quality and comfortable, good skin, good food, appliances that help me save time and energy
Non-material - the freedom to not have to put up with toxic and disgusting people and situations, opportunities to stretch my mind and try new things, and making new memories with loved ones.
These are easy to list out because in the last few months: I resigned from a toxic workboss, took up courses, reconnected with people from my past, took a trip to Taiwan with my mum, where I unexpectedly bought 3 new clothing items because the quality and comfort justified it, got persuaded by my beautician to take on a new treatment package, and am now researching robot vacumms and robot mops 😂

I think sometimes we have to consider how we appear. It would be nice if that were never the case but we are judged on appearance. And if we have a $35k handbag but our car won’t start because we neglected routine maintenance- then folks are right to make other assumptions about our character. Or if we can’t make rent but fly first class to luxury vacations. It does speak to character. Sad but true. Personal choices are personal choices- I can choose to do my own mani/pedi and I hate Starbucks coffee on flavors. But in my expensive purse I have money for luxury items and I can pay my bills too. Then no one has aright to judge.

Hi, about material things, I really value a nice cozy stylish home and to be curated as a person (tidy nice hair, hydrated skin, make-up etc). On the other side (immaterial things), I value investing in myself (LifeLongLearning).

I don’t get coffee out either. I make 2 espresso shots in any coffee to go cup and then add milk and hot water to fit that mug instead of trying to fit 2 whole coffee cups in a too go mug. This saves me a lot of money. I also learned to even bring to the airport or beauty appointments with no shame. The other part of this for me is bringing a bag it fits in so you dont lose the mug and all your savings.😂 I also am thinking about taking off nails. I think cashmere linen cotton and wool and leather are worth the splurge. Any massive designer conglomerate brand is a rip off.

look i’m happy drop a pretty penny on a BKC but i’m allergic to taking a cab 🫣 i live in a city where public transport is of a really high standard and it kills me to pay for a cab ride. so to each his or her own when it comes to spending. i won’t spend on drinks but im all for the overpriced fruit 🤣
