  • A series of videos designed to train our volunteers and staff on the Lightkey lighting software. A lot of the details in these videos are specific to us as a church, but I left them public in case they can benefit anyone else looking to learn how to effectively use the software.
    DISCLAIMER: I know the actual design of the scenes looked like garbage in this video, but I really was going less for good looks, and more for an example of process, haha

    Just wondering can you use MIDI from Propresenter to select specific cues in a cuelist, not just triggering the advancement through the list. So if you happen to change your order, like skip a song, in propresenter. Lightkey would track along skipping over those cues in the cuelist?

    • @Quiksilver6565
      @Quiksilver6565  4 года назад +1

      Dwayne Hooper it does! Hit command E to bring up the midi assignment window, add a midi note and tell it which cue you want it to trigger. I believe you have to set it to “activate.”
      Then in propresenter, add a midi cue with the same note to the slide you want to trigger it. (Assuming you already have the midi/communications module)
      We use our rig to help a school with their productions and I set it up like this since I’m the only one running production for those shows. It will jump around as much as you want when you trigger it this way.

    thx for your incredible video playlist on Lightkey! I think it's much more practical explained than from the official Lightkey page!^^
    I have a big question: Is it possible (through Ableton Live and/or ProPresenter 7) to program a tempo to a song? For example: under the MASTER fader ist a BPM "button" but it doesn't change or affect the tempo of my moving heads or LEDs. Can you help me/us or maybe record another tutorial on that topic?

      I have a similar question. Were you able to figure anything out on that? It would be great to have the tempo come into the intro/set cue in order to be able to not have to tap tempo... (especially when you’re the tech director for a small church and are running FOH, Lights, and directing video simultaneously 😂)

  • @mattjabrooks

    Hi Jeremy. Your videos have helped me get started with Lightkey for my church. Thanks so much. I have a question though... For me the way you program a song makes total sense using the cue list etc and even playing them back (whether that's clicking through the sections of a song or adding midi cues to trigger them - not to mention that having a library of songs already programmed that can easily be added to a service cue schedule being amazing...
    Lots of people seem to use "Control Panel" "Buttons" to trigger off lighting cues. In fact most videos i find are of people doing it that way but i can't seem to figure out how have songs pre-programmed in a folder that i could just drag and drop depending on what songs are being sung in any given service.
    The only reason i'd want to do this anyway is because i want to be able o get volunteers involved and the "buttons" interface seems to be more obvious as to what is there to be triggered (cue-wise) and looks less daunting. Would i be right in thinking that the "buttons" are designed for playback of generic scenes more so than multiple scenes customized for a song. I mean with the amount of cues some of the songs i've programmed have, i don't think they would all even fit on one page. To me, your way of doing things in this video makes the most sense but i'm just trying to make sure i'm not missing an opportunity to make things even simpler for the volunteers i'm going to have to train up.
    Thanks for your help in advance and God Bless!

    • @Quiksilver6565
      @Quiksilver6565  3 года назад +1

      You’re definitely thinking about it the right way. Using buttons in that way on a control panel is something people use to have a more spontaneous approach to doing their lighting. With that layout, things aren’t as planned out or specific to the song, but there is greater flexibility in the moment. In the lighting world this style is called “busking.”
      Doing it this way is arguably harder for the volunteer during service time, but less setup on the back end. It does take a bit of skill to do really well, but it’s totally feasible if you have the dedication and the eye for it.
      I started my career doing lighting design in more of a theatrical environment where everything is very planned out and executed in a repeatable way, so I prefer the cue based method, but if you can find a flow and a setup that works for you, busking is a perfectly fine approach as well!

    • @Quiksilver6565
      @Quiksilver6565  3 года назад +2

      To elaborate a little more, with the control panel, you could think about each button as a lego brick, just like the presets. Rather than one button being an entire scene, you could have buttons that just change the stage color, or just get the movers going on a certain preset. There are many ways to lay it out, but the general idea is that you would have a layout that lets you change any aspect of the scene on the fly. This is why it takes more effort and a bit of a good eye. It’s like live scene building, and if you go into it without a plan, it won’t look quite as good as preset cues will

      @@Quiksilver6565 i really appreciate all of this feedback Jeremy. Thank you. Do you include "black out" and other cue's for specific moments and then just drag them into your service according to the service schedule? I'm guessing that if anything spontaneous did happen you have cues in place for those moments that you can use?

    • @Quiksilver6565
      @Quiksilver6565  3 года назад +2

      @@mattjabrooks we work around it in a few ways. If we need the stage lights up for someone talking through a worship moment, for instance, we can jump back to one of our “host moment” cues, or we can simply click the “full stage” preset on the right side of the screen (keeping in mind this doesn’t fade in or out).
      You can jump around the cue list as much as you want, so there is usually something programmed in there that we can jump to in a spontaneous moment.

    I've been learning a lot from your videos thank you! Question! How do you make those song files in the live view on the bottom of the screen? (Ex Lion and The Lamb, Living Hope etc.). Next to the live tab there is a little arrow that opens a drop down menu. This is where you can select different control panels and cue lists. I added a cue list just for my songs, and for each song I created a folder under that playlist, and put all my cues in that folder. So whenever I wanna program a new song I right click in the cue list and hit “new folder” and just build all my cues in that folder. When it’s time to do that song on Sunday I copy it over to my Sunday cue list

    Thanks for the great tutorials! I do have one question though. This last weekend there was a last-minute change to the service and I didn't have time to change the order of the cues. When the cue was changed to a different part of the service, all of the lights just snapped to that cue with no fade time. Is there a way to switch to different parts of the set cues while still having the fade time take effect?

    • @Quiksilver6565
      @Quiksilver6565  4 года назад

      David Sheas so in previous versions you could do this by right clicking the cue you wanna go to and hitting “activate.” But having just tested that, it seems to only jump to it now. (This is disappointing)
      The other alternative would be to either uncheck the box next to the next cue (if you were simply trying to skip one) or to click and drag the cue you want to jump to and place it right under the current cue. You can rearrange cues live and it won’t drop out of “play” mode.
      This, of course isn’t ideal. I’ll send the team an email on this. They are pretty good at taking feedback and changing features in updates

    • @Quiksilver6565
      @Quiksilver6565  4 года назад +2

      Nelson C. It will really depend on the arrangement of your lights. At my campus we have big white panels behind us made of coroplast that are lit with LED bars. When I do blackouts I’ll usually leave these on so people create silhouettes against the backdrop.
      The basic element to creating a silhouette is having something dark in the foreground against something lit in the background.
      You can achieve a similar effect just using backlights pointing forward on people as well.

      @@Quiksilver6565 Thanks for the tip Jeremy. Yeah we don't have any backlights really. We have uplights with LED striplights from the floor next to the wall so it creates a nice even wash of lights. Then we have 2 LED SLIMPAR 64s on the front left and right edge of the stage. Last, we have a bunch of LED PARCANS on the front and the back of the truss hanging but shining on the band and the back wall too. That's it.

    Hey Jeremy, do you have a strategy for making it easy to update your physical lighting set in the future with minimal rework of your light show. For example adding four more moving heads in your top row of lights. The best way I can see to do this is have all the presets setup as you have them and then when it’s time to add more moving heads you would go into each of your presets groups (color, effects, dimmer, positions, etc) and then manually add the lights to each preset. For example for the dimmer preset I would click the four new MH, adjust the dimmer to 100% and then “update” the 100% dimmer preset. Obviously then all the control panel cues and buttons would inherit the new Mh’s. My fanning effect would now have 22 lights instead of 18,etc. is this the best approach or is there a better way? Thanks in advance.

    • @Quiksilver6565

      I’m actually pretty sure you could use garage band to accomplish this. GarageBand is free with every mac, so all you’d need to do is drop the mp3 on a track and create a midi track under that that plays midi notes when you want your cues to change.

      When I came up in the industry, the only low cost options in lighting were horrid things like the obey 70. Light key kind of changed the game for budget rigs, and brought revolutionary features like *fading between scenes!* (for real, there was no fade option on anything below 500 bucks back in the day)

      One button only allows you to activate one scene/cue, so you wouldn’t be able to build a dynamic show like this and place it in one button. Now, once you have your cues set, you can go through them by simply hitting the play button, so in that sense, during the song you only need to hit that one button for each cue change.

The way I did this was I created a custom patch for a fixture with one channel that has a range from 255-255, then I patched it to the address of our rail power. This way as soon as lightkey turns on, it turns the rails on, and they stay on till I quit lightkey

      Jarrod Adkins the light flicker may come down to the type of DMX interface you have. If it’s one of the “open DMX” models, it uses the laptop to process the signal where others use an internal processor. Sometimes this results in an occasional flicker, especially when switching between applications. Which interface do you have?
      I actually just recently figured out how to get Lightkey to trigger content in propresenter, so I could make another video on that. It’s much easier to trigger scenes in lightkey using propresenter rather than doing it the other way around, but either is possible.
