Babies are not “assigned” a sex at birth. Their sex is observed. “Assigned” implies that doctors/parents decide what sex their baby is.

Thank you!! People use the wrong terminology for this, as they do for nonbinary persons. "They" is plural. It makes no sense to refer to any single person as "they."

"assigned" means that the way the biology of sexed bodies is read by doctors/parents is always cultural; is always socially shaped.
The "observation" you claim here is a cognitive, material process.
There is no "observation" made by human that magically escapes the materiality of the observer.
There is no "observation" made by human; which is not historically informed.
Socially, historically defined categories of sex do not reflect the complexity and diversity of bodies and biology, they are a socially situated reading of those bodies.
We are all assigned to one or the other of a set of two categories of sex in spite of our biological reality, and this practice is harmful for lots of us.
that"s what this movie is about.
It is only for social reasons that sexued bodies who's biological features are read as not fitting clearly enough into these categories are invalidated and erased.
Assigning a sex at birth is the first step of this invalidation and erasure.

Intersex from Tennessee. Physicians amended my birth certificate 30 years ago. New Tennessee law last month force outs me every time ID is required for my drivers license or passport. We are hidden from society because of shame but God made us. God made trans people too and if medical treatment hormones and surgery is performed they should be granted an ID that matches.

I was also born with one of many intersex conditions. Surgeries started at age ten and again at age eleven.I was never told what was done to me during surgeries. As a result of not knowing exactly what was done to me Caused almost stage four cancer later in life. They hide everything from me.
Even today Im not treated well by a couple of people in the medical community. My DNA is male and for the most part I live as a male. But my cancer was very advanced form ovarian cancer. As a result my doctors said I need to start having mammograms every year as I carry the genes for both ovarian and breast cancer now. To save a long drive to the bigger communities it was suggested I have the xray done at a small community clinic and hospital. When I showed up for the test I was confronted in the waiting room by the staff and they had printed out my medical records. They didn't like that I was listed as being bi-gendered when I looked male and refused to do the x-ray unless I agreed to sign a form that I would pay for this exam out of pocket. I told them I had insurance and a work order from my oncologist and endocrinologist. There were several staff confronting me in the waiting room as they questioned me. In the end I was escorted out the front door of the hospital. They said they would look into it.
I went home very upset at how I was treated. But I waited several days for a call back but this did not happen. So I called my doctors who generated the order for this exam and they became very upset. As a result Im now supposed to drive 90 miles to another clinic for this testing. The issue there is no one has contacted me about having this test done at a different clinic. So I guess I will not be getting any care there either.
This has happened over and over again in my life time. Back in 1997 I detected a large lump and went to the doctor right away. I knew there was a blood test to test for testicular cancer. ( I did not know that I was intersex at that time because I never had access to my childhood records.) They refused to do any testing and told me to come back in three weeks. I did just that and they told me to come back in another three weeks. this went on and on until I demanded something be done. A ultrasound was done and I could see a mass in my scrotum that extended into my abdomen. My first words were this is a tumor. She said oh no this is just a little fluid. After a week or two more I demanded this be surgically removed and I was told that I was over reacting. But they did contact a surgeon to work in into his surgery list. That took months and when he did operate on me it was done while I was wide awake with basically novicane. The moment the surgeon cut my abdomen a 10 cm malignant germ cell teratoma poped out of the wound. Form the beginning to the day of this surgery it took nine months for action to take place. ( Oh that blood test I asked for nine months before was done at last the same day I had this surgery. Guess what it indicated I was at least stage three or worse. )
That was the beginning of another 7 months of pure hell, chemotherapy and surgeries at the Mayo Clinic. In addition ive had 20 years of nerve pain for the chemo treatments and several more repair surgeries.
It seems that if you were born with a intersex type condition you are often treated horrid. The events with the mammogram happened one month ago this week. Taken by itself I could have just brushed off what had happened to me. But Over my whole life time of dealing with these events it has put me into a depression Im having a hard time shake.
I remember the day of the planned mammogram with this X-ray pressing her finger on one my medical records pointing to me listed as being bi-gender as she raced around pointing to different areas of my records. She just kept on shaking her hand at me while the other people in her group tossed questions at me.
    Welcome to Minnesota nice..
    Sadly

We have know idea how rare intersex people actually are unless we looked for intersex conditions of every baby born. I doubt they are only 1% of the population like so many are commenting. They're probably more common than trans people

@@xlargetophat I don't think a few films are "fixation." And I don't think highlighting and focusing on an underreported matter that has real physical and emotional effects on real people in a documentary (or even a _set_ of documentaries) is a bad thing at all.
In fact, I'd argue it's unique circumstances that vary from what is most commonly seen is what documentaries are best suited for.
I don't think there's a big appetite to understand the same mundane lives and experiences many of us share.

Hello, 🦩🦩🦩🦋🦋🦋May I share an Old Testament Verse with you from Daniel 7:14 "And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a Kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should SERVE Him; his dominion is an Everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom shall not pass away, and His Kingdom that which shall not be destroyed." Also, can I share Isaiah 53:5 " But HE was WOUNDED For our TRANSGRESSIONS, he was BRUISED for our iniquities; the chastisement of our peace was upon Him, and with His STRIPES we are HEALED."
God the Father loves you so much that He sent Holy Sinless Jesus (His Holy Son) to earth to be born of a virgin. Then, to grow up and die on a cross for our sins. He was in the tomb for 3 days, then Father God raised Holy and Sinless Jesus Christ (Y'shua) to Life! He appeared to people and went back to Heaven. We must receive Sinless Jesus sincerely to be God's child(John 1:12).After we get saved by grace through faith in Christ, if we truly love the Lord Jesus Christ, then we will obey Jesus(John 14:15). Mark 1:15 "And saying, the time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: Repent ye, and believe the gospel." Jesus said in John 14:15 "If you love Me, keep My commandments. "There's a real hell. It says in Revelation 21:8 "But for the cowardly, & unbelieving, and abominable, and murderers, & immoral persons sorcerers & idolaters & all liars, their part will be in the lake that burns with fire & brimstone..." Please sincerely receive Holy Jesus and put your true faith and trust in Him today and please repent. Will you have a Real encounter with Holy Lord Jesus (Y'shua is His Hebrew Name) and stay in a Genuine relationship with Him daily please?
