Missed BJS in '73 but drove down with 3 other crazy Arizona bros from Dallas in '77 for Willy's 4th of July picnic in Gonzales. 3 days of non-stop chaos and the best country, outlaw music with Leon, Kris, Willy, Waylon, and friends, etc, etc..... There was a big reservoir pond next to the venue so there was no shortage of mud and skinny dipping, and of course that long, long hike across the dry dirt fields to get to the music. A once in a life time experience. One of our extremely, toasted amigos even made it over the 2 fences and past security backstage, and had the privilege of being an unwelcome guest in the talents portable toilets relieving himself in the stale next to Leons.
That's awesome. The second chapter in my book is about the Gonzales Picnic in '76. Got plenty of people who told me a lot of the same thing -- minus getting to pee next to Leon Russell.
Look forward to it... It really was an awesome 4th, with a great line-up. Memory fails me now, (and then due to a severe "Lone Star' high) so I hope you can refresh it. P.S. As the story goes, Leon came into that multi-stall shiter, sat down next to my buddy, said a few cool words then relieved himself of more then pee, got up, said adios and left in the middle of the night. Thats about as up-front and personal as you can get with ones idol.@@DaveDaltonThomas
