He was known for his music, grand theft auto, drug binges and stints in jail. At the height of Paycheck’s fame, he shot a man over a turtle soup recipe, which led to a high-profile trial, a prison sentence and one of his greatest hits, “Old Violin.”

Saw Johnny and his band in a hay barn in Martin County, Fl early 90's. It was one of the best, purest country music concerts I've ever been to.

Oh, I'm sure. Didn't mean it wasn't, but it was a little before my time & I've never been into country music. I've seen Extract several times & never it was a Johnny Paycheck song, until this clip
That movie had some great songs!
I had to work with this POS in Norman Oklahoma. I think "work" is stretching it. It was more like "babysitting". That was the last damn country western concert for me. Those people were nuts.

Back when Country was a genre that mainstream pop culture looked down on...and ironically, the Country music of back then was objectively better than anything today!
I know his cousin, also a Lytle, very talented and also vying to be the worst black sheep of the family. They had an ancestor, Brigadier General William Lytle who was killed at the Battle of Chickamauga in north Georgia.
I just read about him...impressive legacy!
This has a real Joe Cappa vibe to it and now I want to see Mike Judge and Joe Cappa work together on something.

Very entertaining video. I don't know much about Country music, mostly can't stand it--all that stupid hillbilly caterwauling about pick up trucks, Confederate "patriotism" and cheatin' wives laid over kindergarten musicianship, etc--but Paycheck's story is not so uncommon among artists in many fields. The Napoleon complex as the driving force behind his self-destruction was interesting, but a similar insecurity is actually rampant now in the world of auto-tuned pop stars who know that they're fookin' frauds...
