I see certain orders of magnitude in Star Wars... figuratively. “Tens of thousands”, my Ahch-To! It had to be several hundred, which could... feasibly be defeated by a thousand armed-civilian ships if unshielded, with a single obvious weakness. To me, basic logic is higher canon than a hired writer’s literary interpretation of the movie.

This battle would be much better if in the story of the movie, they said that something like half the fleet of the new republic was destroyed. That the new republic was able to gather and organize its fleet. In addition to calling its members to mobilize their navies. They could mention that several planets still remember how it was under the regime of the empire.
And that they would rather be destroyed than be ruled again under a tyrannical regime. With the first order with their forces overextend. They could show that the first order was having a hard time, as they relied heavily on the base starkiller in their plans. And because they have a very centralized organization. And after the death of supreme leader snoke and several top officers after the destruction of The Supremacy in the second film. The machinery of the first order was paralyzed until Kylo Ren managed to consolidate his power and reorganize the leadership. With Kylo Ren almost desperate to get a new fleet because they were losing. Because they were facing great resistance in every sector of the galaxy.
With the battle of Exegol being the New Republic fleet with its allies, all warships, descending on the planet. Perhaps even with a captured and modified super destroyer leading the fleet. With the galaxy passing a message to the first order like "never again".

One of the biggest problems with these films(and most other movies nowadays) is that the sense of scale is way off. In Halo the scale is always clearly defined in the games and books. When a handful of regular Covenant ships show up the tone begins to shift. You can tell it's gonna be a tough fight but victory isn't completely off the table. When Covenant capital ships or a super carrier shows up the mood shifts immediately. At that point the reader knows that when one of those ships show up it's not about winning, it's about saving as many UNSC forces as possible to be used in a more winnable situation. The scale is clearly defined and consistent.
With Star Wars(at least now) the scale is all over the place. Back in Episode 5 when you saw just a single star destroyer you knew the rebels were in a tight spot. The sequels just copy pasting thousands of them so nonchalantly takes out that sense of dread and danger, because you know the resistance wouldn't stand a chance against those odds but because the scale has been thrown off the writers are just gonna make some cheap cop out for the heroes to blow em all up and win.

You know... that's true. I've never read the halo books so I can't comment on that but I have read a large number of legends star wars books and it's usually indicated when an ISD shows up the characters are basically like "an imperial star destroyer?? Well we're fucked." That's a good point you made.

@@AKJames762 Exactly. What people not into the SW EU don't understand is that a Star Destroyer isn't just a really big ship. It's the most advanced war vessel in the history of the SW galaxy. A single ISD can lock down an entire system thanks to all the ground forces and fighters it carries. Not to mention the ungodly amount of firepower it has along with it's artificial gravity wells that prevent non blockade running ships from escaping(Rogue one actually got that right just for TLJ to immediately screw it up). The OG Empire didn't need a bajillion of em. They only needed like....20.
It's the reason why the rebels had to build a massive ion cannon *with* a giant shield generator to protect Hoth. In episode 6 Admiral Ackbar had to remind Lando that their own capital ships couldn't even last against an ISD. The rebels had to outwit and out strategize the Empire, just like the UNSC against the Covenant. The scale was consistent up until the sequels where it flip flops all the time to suit the writing.

@@coltonwhite2518 The empire had thousands upon thousands of star destroyers, and that honestly makes sense, since they had to police thousands upon thousands of star system. So while there were a lot of ISD's, they were scattered all over. This is one of the reasons why an ISD needed to be so powerfull, it had to be capable of operating mostly alone. The republic and CIS had probably a lot less capital ships (though at least several hundreds if not more), because many worlds supported them vs the empire subjugating every world they were able to, even out rim system formerly mostly ignored by/independent of the republic and CIS.
In episode 6 I do believe there were quite a lot of ISD's, just also one dreadnaught class ISD (or whatever it was called). A good capital ship of the rebels could take on an ISD, however the rebels had very few such powerfull ships, while the empire had plenty.

The original trilogy has all sorts of minor references to the Empire's resources, vast though they are, being stretched by the construction of the Death Stars. It gave a sense of industry to the universe. The sequel trilogy feels like it takes place in a computer or a dream, there's no resource requirement to anything, the plot just magics things into existence.

vagabondflow Yes, at first I thought that the origins of these ships didn’t make any sense. After a while though, I figured out that with Palpatine’s ancient sith secrets, and decades and decades of time, he could somehow make a few hundred star destroyers. Also, he could have just saved them from the times when the Empire was at the height of its industry, as a last resort, and just upgraded them with planetary lasers with what he had on hand.

not neccesarily. its been what, 50 years in between episode six and seven? all it would take would be a dedicaded couple billion people to reproduce for 20 years and get 10x the population they started out with, if not more. its the material to build the ships that are the problem, unless they were all built by droids, and ate entire planets for the resources which is entirely possible since they are in the unknown regions. a place that dosent get much lime light

Or to create the biggest spectacle without sending any hints about it out to cause despair for our heroes for the destroyers to be seen and for them to lose all hope and resolve and break their will to fight before it’s even begun.

True, but that also presents another issue:
The Star Forge was uniquely designed by the Rakatan/Infinite Empire using advanced technology that would be lost with the Rakatan Empire when it declined into random tribes.
Most importantly, the exact process/method in which the Star Forge was built and operated was lost with the Forge itself, with most knowledge either fading from existence or being viewed as useless.
One definitive issue is that there wouldn't be enough information nor materials for Palpatine to recreate the Star Forge, plus, without a definitive source of Kyber Crystals, he'd have to find an alternate power source for his superweapon Star Destroyers.
