Drowning rarely looks like what most people expect… which is why anyone that has the responsibility for safety at water events is properly trained and has experience… Other athletes must of swam past the casualty without noticing that a fellow athlete was in trouble, or assumed that the responsibility to act was solely on others…
But as a bystander, when you see someone struggling, and then go under water, and the lifeguards and rescue swimmers do nothing, how is it not on you as the individual seeing it, to go make the difference?? He watched as the people who were supposed to help, didn’t help, so then he chose to do nothing as well.

I swam out in Lake Havasu to a buoy and it was easy getting there but on my way back the current started pushing me backwards and I became exhausted, I had to flip on my back and float. Waters no joke.

Before the event finished fans noticed him going under and a search was underway, however there absolutely seems to be negligence from the paddle boarder to inform people or attempt to properly search for lazar. It's insane how close he was and they didn't notice. On replay it was obvious to see and so sad however live (on the feed at least) it was very easy to miss.
I'm just remembering the year when Pat was talking about how tight the swim uniforms were and the cramping that was happening,(drowning hazard) and got completely dismissed and made fun of by Castro. Or when athletes were lauded for pushing themselves into heat exhaustion during Murph. (not to mention other season-ending and career-ending injuries) The ethos that leads to athletes not being listened to or taken seriously about safety concerns is one that does not concern itself with dangerous/hazardous conditions and doesn't respond quickly enough to an athlete in danger. The athlete union has been trying to point this out for a LONG time and it is SO tragic what happened today and the breakdown in response to an athlete in danger that led to this tragedy.

That's difficult I know but that's why referees of college football and basketball are not allowed to officiate games in their area. For bias. In this case if someone is enjoying their favorite crossfitter conquer the event they lose track of their assignment. To me that's why this got by the paddleboarder till too late.

But, I’m sure there will be an autopsy and I would imagine CF HQ will be wanting a toxicology, medical history report. As much as I enjoyed some of the benefits of CrossFit when I took it, it was clear to me that they didn’t take alot of things as seriously as they should.. (including injury + proper form.. never mind some of the insane egos )… but this is incompetence to a degree that’s hard to grasp. They *never* stopped the event?!? How is that even an option. The fact the lifeguard just rolled by & came back ONLY to wait till the event was over..?! I can’t think of a time I’ve *ever* heard of a lifeguard waiting till an event was over to rescue someone.. or one that went OUT just to turn right back around when they didn’t find him.. Wow….

When somebody is struggling in the water, you NEED to RESPOND IMMEDIATELY. If that is the case, there will be a massive legal challenge with this and there needs to be a complete re-evaluation of the safety protocol and the safety staff. An emergency medical event should ALWAYS shut an event down and preserving human life MUST become the priority.

In the video I hear this interviewee suggest that they let the event finish before they even began searching under the water for the athlete who was witnessed having difficulties. He also suggests that even though they knew that someone was in big trouble, they allowed the event to finish. If he was described as being seen going under the water and not coming back up by multiple, or AT LEAST this one witness being interviewed, shouldn’t they have immediately stopped the event and at least clarified what was going on?

Nice Crossfit community. The athletes finishing that event was worth more than one of their lives. That's some pretty good dedication... Imagine going to a public pool and someone is drowning and the lifeguard is like "well, lets just wait until everybody is done having their fun in the pool and we'll look afterwards for the body. No point trying to help them when it would matter".
They sign waivers before they join these events exempting the company or owners from being sued and for good reason. Sports activities ALWAYS have injuries and rarely but on occasion a death may occur. Considering they've had 2 close calls before this during a swimming event it may be time to move the 'water' activities to a pool.
CrossFit tries to be a man of all trades. Calling their athletes fittest on Earth while many of them have very poor techniques in some participating sports. Regarding swimming, they are very mediocre in swimming and OWS is a dangerous sport. For God's sake, who puts swimming after running? You want to minimize the risk of drowning. What's next, CrossFit? I have a great race for you in mind. Snatches to max count for 10 minutes, all-in running 10K, then maybe obstacle course of something (with rope climbing, muscle ups, etc.) and polish it with 10K open water swimming. Sounds like a great idea.
I've been thinking about that the whole day. Even for trained triathletes is hard to swim after running that much, even with the proper technique and training.

I feel bad for my comment on Mayhems channel two days ago where I told them they need to hire swim coaches because in their video the athletes had poor breathing and swim technique. Swimming after a run is ok if you are a pro swimmer. But most of these athletes aren’t pro or average swimmers. Sadly

The lady lifeguard was probably tiny and could not even process with her brain how to get a tall muscular athlete out of the water. She was probably beyond herself to comprehend what she could even do to help. The only solution is to keep all athletes outside the water if they can't have certified lifeguards and the security logistic for swimming.

Female lifeguard thinks she's there to watch the race instead of monitor the safety of the athletes fails to see athlete go under water. Bystander tells her someone went under and she checks and is basically like, "welp, I guess he's gone, eff him." Fails to stop the race, fails to do anything...3 hours later search and rescue shows up. The lifeguard should be charged with criminal negligent homicide. She was told and did nothing.

I can’t think of a time I’ve *ever* heard of a lifeguard waiting till an event was over to rescue someone.. or one that went OUT just to turn right back around when they didn’t find him..

They knew someone was drowning, or had drowned, and they waited until the event finished to deploy a rescue effort? Is that true? When somebody is struggling in the water, you NEED to RESPOND IMMEDIATELY. If that is the case, there will be a massive legal challenge with this and there needs to be a complete re-evaluation of the safety protocol and the safety staff. An emergency medical event should ALWAYS shut an event down and preserving human life MUST become the priority.

In the video I hear this interviewee suggest that they let the event finish before they even began searching under the water for the athlete who was witnessed having difficulties. He also suggests that even though they knew that someone was in big trouble, they allowed the event to finish. If he was described as being seen going under the water and not coming back up by multiple, or AT LEAST this one witness being interviewed, shouldn’t they have immediately stopped the event and at least clarified what was going on?
@@DrewAnderson-ye9jn There is video that show him struggling for a while. So what other reason would there be? I can clearly see it in the video. No sure how they did not see him. People are literally swimming by him. The lifeguard's or who ever they were were not far from him.
@@Simply_Simian that is the correct timeline, but the logic wasn’t “we know someone went under, but let’s finish the event and then we’ll get his dead body later”. No one on staff saw him go under. Someone in the audience saw him go under and tried to alert a life guard. How that conversation went idk but I heard someone say they went over to where he was last seen….maybe they thought the audience member was wrong?

Nice Crossfit community. The athletes finishing that event was worth more than one of their lives. That's some pretty good dedication... Imagine going to a public pool and someone is drowning and the lifeguard is like "well, lets just wait until everybody is done having their fun in the pool and we'll look afterwards for the body. No point trying to help them when it would matter".
Complete lack of security this cold me prevented what a shame on the organization 😭 I hope more people see this testimony and do some thing about it

They sign waivers before they join these events exempting the company or owners from being sued and for good reason. Sports activities ALWAYS have injuries and rarely but on occasion a death may occur. Considering they've had 2 close calls before this during a swimming event it may be time to move the 'water' activities to a pool.

CrossFit tries to be a man of all trades. Calling their athletes fittest on Earth while many of them have very poor techniques in some participating sports. Regarding swimming, they are very mediocre in swimming and OWS is a dangerous sport. For God's sake, who puts swimming after running? You want to minimize the risk of drowning. What's next, CrossFit? I have a great race for you in mind. Snatches to max count for 10 minutes, all-in running 10K, then maybe obstacle course of something (with rope climbing, muscle ups, etc.) and polish it with 10K open water swimming. Sounds like a great idea.

Even for trained triathletes is hard to swim after running that much, even with the proper technique and training.

I feel bad for my comment on Mayhems channel two days ago where I told them they need to hire swim coaches because in their video the athletes had poor breathing and swim technique. Swimming after a run is ok if you are a pro swimmer. But most of these athletes aren’t pro or average swimmers. Sadly
All these guys can squat 500 plus pounds and immediately run a sub 5 min mile afterwards. Your plain ignorance is showing. Stick to planet fitness you rando

@@leyway These events are no doubt exausting, but you simply cannot drown from exhaustion, because what you can do is to lay on your back with little to no feet movement and stay there for hours. You drown because of other factors.

How do you witness a drowning and not push unitl someone actually acts on your protestations that someone is under the water? I must have missed something because is strange that no one pushed the life guards or the organizer until much later.
Man- i am a former triathlete- nowinto CrossFit and i always said its foolish for CrossFit to spring an open water swim!
If he saw it why didn’t he get the event stopped? Why didn’t the person who jumped in have the event stopped? Point fingers only the ones pointing back are worth talking about.
Honest question: aside from doing what they did- tell the lifeguard someone went under and didn't come back up and having the lifeguard put out a stop alert- how would they have managed to stop the event?
The lady lifeguard was probably tiny and could not even process with her brain how to get a tall muscular athlete out of the water. She was probably beyond herself to comprehend what she could even do to help. The only solution is to keep all athletes outside the water if they can't have certified lifeguards and the security logistic for swimming.
So disgusting.

CF organization deserves to be sued into oblivion. The fact that they waited until it was over to even try to get him is just too effing much on top of all the other obvious negligence that went into planning this and safety planning.
Female lifeguard thinks she's there to watch the race instead of monitor the safety of the athletes fails to see athlete go under water. Bystander tells her someone went under and she checks and is basically like, "welp, I guess he's gone, eff him." Fails to stop the race, fails to do anything...3 hours later search and rescue shows up. The lifeguard should be charged with criminal negligent homicide. She was told and did nothing.
Question for the audio guy. Did you intentionally clip the microphone to his necklace and collar to keep the necklace from hitting the microphone? I never thought about doing that before.

It sounds like the lifeguards was completely incompetent and froze. Some people freeze when tested. I have seen this happen in healthcare several times.
