My journey took me the opposite way. I started street shooting with a 90mm equiv. And gradually worked my way over 50mm and 35mm to now 28mm equiv. Longer focal lengths are great for abstract photography and yes, in my opinion easier to compose. And I love that you can get really graphical images with the longer lenses. Shooting wide like 28mm is really challenging and I find I come back with less keepers. BUT the images I get are always worth the extra bit of composition work. When you shoot with 28mm you have to get close to things and this translates to the final result. It results in a more dynamic, more intimate image. So to sum up, I like shooting with longer lenses more and it‘s easier for me. But I constantly push my composition skills by using wider focal lengths.
Well said! I completely agree. THe longer focal lengths are fitting great right now for what I’m trying to capture, but I’m so much more appreciative of the challenge that a 28mm presents
I totally understand, I did exactly the same. Started out with a 135mm because I had never shot people in the streets before and I was so anxious about it, I felt like a paparazzi. Then I slowly worked my way to shorter focal lengths, now I own only two lenses, a 50mm that feels like home to me and a 28mm that is challenging me to get really close to people: I love the perspective I get with that lens, the feeling of being “in the zone”, but it surely is pushing my limits as a shy photographer.
Love hearing how zig-zag everyone’s journey is! I started off with a 50mm, then 35mm as I got into street, then ran out of money so we’re sticking with the 35mm equivalent for the foreseeable future 😂
I'm long sighted, so shooting with an 85mm always felt way more natural for me, and of course we always want to step out of our comfort zone, so that's how I ended up with the x100v. it's still early days, but with the pandemic coming in, it really has set me back for the same reasons why you and many others have shifted to telephoto and slowing down
I’ve started to take interest with street photography but I have been hesitant of walking around and taking images. I’m slowly trying to get out of that and watching your videos really helped!
When I switched to Fuji, I started shooting with the cheaper 35mm version, XC (the difference with XF is only in the plastic case and it's not waterproof, obviously, but this is not the main thing). 35mm has surprisingly become my favorite focal length and I still shoot with this lens. By the way, I feel the same way in crowded places, but along with the missed moments, new opportunities open up. You learn how to slow down and focus not just on everything that happens, but specifically on what you can actually capture. It teaches you how to prioritize while shooting. And thank you for another video, it's great as always!
During the pandemic I started using the 50mmf2 and that lens is now glued to my XPro3. Sometimes I'll put on the 35mmf1.4 but I have a hard time doing street photography with anything wider than that. I took the X100S out for a spin earlier today and immediately missed my 50mm.
glad someone made a video about this. I used to always shoot street with the fuji 56mm (85mm equiv) because I like to separate the smaller details of a scene in an abstract way. I got a ricoh griii months ago and the wider fixed lens camera has definitely taught me the value of taking in the whole scene especially when photographing moments with friends. I haven't used the 56 in months, but I'm now inspired to see how my telephoto composition will be like.
@@FaizalWestcott honestly, I'd highly recommend the viltrox 56mm 1.4. I've had both the fuji and viltrox version, they have extremely similar optical quality, but the viltrox focuses way faster and is a little smaller.
The XF 35mm is probably my favorite all-rounder lens and is usually glued to my camera (when the 56mm or the Mitakon 35mm F.095 isn't on it). I love this lens and this focal length in particular, but it can get a bit tight sometimes - though I appreciate its versatility and ability to shoot both environmental and portraiture both pretty well.
It's amazing how something simple like switching to another focal length can change your entire approach to taking pictures and also inspire you to go out and shoot more.
Honestly, man, I’ve found the 18-55 to work great on an xe. Shoot it as an f4 or 5.6 and you’ve got a 28, 35, 50, and 85. Don’t treat it as a zoom, but rather 4 primes.
Great video, as always, Faizal ! I must only laugh when reading something about "still using the X100V?" because it's still the current model, even soon 2 years old. Into contrast, i still shoot with it's original version, the Fujifilm X100, and still enjoy it. I have the black limited edition.
I started with longer focal length the kit lens the moved to the nifty fifty on my canon which i think is 80mm equivalent and i really like the challenge and making my shots seem wider by actually moving my body around. I now see all my shots before i even take them because I’ve trained my eyes and body to work together when I’m composing a photo. It’s got to the point where I don’t even realize I’m doing it until after the fact. One day i plan to go a bit wider.
I clicked on this video because it came up in my recommendations based on my being a Fujifilm user and viewing many Fuji-centric videos. Let me say, I love your photos. I'm jealous of you subject matter, but you saw and captured some great stuff. I subscribed and look forward to more of your work. Changing lenses can definitely inspire a new way of seeing and working a scene. I have all of the Fujicrons and they are perfect on the X-E class of cameras.
I decided to split the difference between the usual 35mm and 50mm. So, on my ASP-C, I opted for the 28mm f/2.8, which translates to 42mm on my camera. Just got the lens today. I am going out with it tomorrow, to see if my compromise suits me. I enjoy your videos.
Thanks for the video Faizal! It really helps because I was thinking of investing in the xf35 so I can think about my composition and take some more time before taking shots like you said. This has definitely helped my decision!
I use a Lumix LX100 (4/3 12.9mp) often for the street. I find the 24-75mm FF equivalent suits what I do quite well. I have missed a lot by having a fixed focal length lens. I often see photo coming and get an idea what focal length will suite it and so I preset it. I'm older and cannot move around like I used to. This short range zoom suits me.
Henri Cartier-Bresson used a 50mm focal length. Yes, mixing up the shooting with different lenses is great, though some will disagree. You do have to reset the brain a little each time, but I like the different looks achieved. Even that 85mm look or 90mm equivalent of a 45mm Olympus lens, is neat on the street to spice things up - a change up. The 50mm is pretty darn good overall, and can grab those shots across the street, when you just cannot get closer.
Those images you showed with the change in focal length are really striking and vivid. I'm trying to ween myself off from the 14/45mm zoom to the 35mm and i find it frustrating at times. Run and gun as you saw, no way. Enjoying your videos 👍
Have you tried the digital teleconverter feature on the x100v? Check it out. W/ the camera in the S mode, if you slowly turn the focus wheel on the lens clockwise, it will zoom into 50mm (full frame equivalent), then a further turn will zoom into 70mm (full frame equivalent) with no discernible, or at most, very little loss of image quality. Not available if you shoot exclusively in RAW. See x100v owner's manual at p. 80. It's a cool feature if you're out and about with just your x100v.
Started with the 22mm 35 equivalent and now shooting with a 35 for a 50mm equivalent, I feel the 50mm equivalent is perfect for my style right now. Just wide enough to tell a story but not so wide where you lose your subject or story without cropping.
I’ve been going through something very similar. For about a year plus I had only shot with the 23mm f2 lens. Then back in November I moved back to my hometown where there’s a lot less people and decided to switch to a 35mm f2 lens for a while. I used that lens exclusively for months and I’m extremely happy I did. I got some amazing photos and it was great switching things up a bit
Loving that frame at 4.19. I really have always found 50mm and above mid-telephoto focal lengths to be easier to compose and much more in line with how I view my environment. I got the X100V to challenge myself to shoot wider and also to have a camera I could always wear with me in social settings. It's been great, but I have seriously missed shooting those longer focal lengths, and now find myself back on my Sony A7III with the 90mm Macro. I really fell out of love with the Sony image after coming off the Fuji and film, but I just love how much more abstract I can be, as well as some of the scenes I can find.
I enjoyed this video and your channel, Faizal. The 50mm lens for street actually was most common among the early street photographers such as Cartier-Bresson and Helen Levitt and others. C-B had a 35mm but regarded it as generally too wide for his style. He occasionally shot a 90mm, I believe, but he mostly favored the 50mm. The move to wider lens such as the 35 and 28 happened later, beginning in the late 1960s. While I owned and used an x100S for street work, I sold it and went with Fuji interchangeable lens bodies and the XF35/2 and XF60/2.4. I also use some manual 35’s and 50’s (TTArtisan 35/1.4 and 50/1.2 are great fun). I own but rarely use the XF23/2. You are right that the aesthetic is different for the longer lens - more order/discipline in the compositions, I think. Anyway, I’ve enjoyed your POVs and watching you explore the streets. Keep the, comin’!
I couldn't agree more. I just love 35 and 50mm on ASP-C lenses. But sometimes I would love to go even farther, like 85/105mm because I feel a lot more comfortable photographing from a distance, even pre-pandemic. I guess I really like my space - and the compression of the lense ;-)
I started with the 35mm f2 on my xt3 and I lovend it for picking out abstract details in everyday life. I quickly got interesten in the 50 f2 as well. Nice video as always Faizal
I bougth the Ricoh Gr3x and its change my life, in the bad way. I was thinking if could have a camera all the time with me, it was make me a better photographer. Its time to sell the Ricoh its not a tool for my style. Really like your aproach and work to RUclips! Sorry for my english Wes. Cheers
I think changing focal lengths in general sparks inspiration and challenge our creativity. The 27mm has been stuck to my camera since I bought it and I have grown comfortable with it. Although I still love the lens, I definitely want to try out the 35/50mm lenses! Likewise, if you started off with 35/50, you may find it exciting to experiment and master a wider length as well.
I use the 16-80 and most of my "keepers" are in telephoto range...it's just my style and what I like to shoot. Most of the images in my new book were shot with much longer focal lengths. I'd love to hear your thoughts about my book...I could send you a PDF or a physical copy if you'd like to review it for a future video. I enjoy your vids as I think we have similar styles and you present information well!
When I had my Xpro 3 last year, I bought it with the 23 f2. Loved it until I made the "mistake" of buying the 50 f2… The 23 no longer saw my camera again… 😅 Now that I replaced the Fuji with a M9, I will definitely buy a 75mm (the Voigtlander 1.5 looks so dope). 😉 I am also trying 28mm atm, but I’m having hard time to adapt to it and think of just replacing it with a more classical 35mm…
I am actually shooting with 85mm most of the time. Sometimes I shoot with an 85mm on sony A6400 making it look more like an 135mm. It is fun but I am considering starting shooting more wide so I can see what else I can do. I am even considering the X100V to persuade myself shooting at 35mm.
Did you try the digital teleconverter feature? You can interpolate to 35 and 70 equivalent lenses on the x100v. I love my x-e4 and my go to lenses are the 23/35 1.4s, and the 27mm pancake for when I want to go light, but I wonder if the x100v could be the ultimate grab and go that could still provide this two lens combo. The 70 equivalent interpolation is probably a bit of a stretch, but from 23 to 35 it’s not as big of a jump after all.
Thoughtful discussion and nice photos! Yeah, I also prefer 50 mm "normal" framing most of the time. It's easier to give the viewer a clear concentrated view of the subject(s) without having to stick the camera up someone's nose.
I'm currently shooting the streets with the 50mm f2. And while it's been great at helping me maintain some distance from my subject (because I'm still a bit too self conscious) shooting outside, I did miss some shots as well because of the focal length. Most of streets I shoot in are quite narrow so I realized I need something wider. I'm planning to get my hands on a 35mm lens focal length. Something with wider aperture for some good lowlight performance. 🤓
So I recently picked up a canon fd 50mm f 3.5 (vintage) macro lense for scanning my negatives and I decided to take it out on my holiday mounted on my xt3 and I loved the 50mm so much that I decided to buy the canon fd 50mm f1.4
I start with a 35 mm on a apsc camera then got a 50mm. At one point I feel restiricted and needed a wider focal lenght. Even 35 (52,5 on ff) was not wide enough. I got myself a 24-35 mm range (on fullframe). So I am the opposite :) But considering to use 50 on apsc again these days (not 35 though, I think 50mm range is a bit boring).
Thanks for the video! I had a similar experience. I wanted a fast lens for my m4/3 camera and the cheapest option was the 25mm f1.7 which is a 50mm ff equivalent. I got used to it quickly. Now I don’t know what to do with 28mm, it just feels super wide!
Try out the Konica Hexanon 40mmF1.8 + adapter can 80 usd used. Great kens with a character the XF lenses miss. I love my xf50mmf2 and 35mm1.4 but the 40mm is a real analogue experience. All my photographs are shot with the XE1 and the 40mmF1.8 @xftales
I mentioned to another person here that I'm not a fan of the large clunky design of it. Since I've been using the longer focal lengths a lot recently its far better to have an actual lens with more elements, greater sharpness, and faster autofocus. ALthough if you already have a x100v it's not to say that the converter is not a good option. It's a great alternative to getting a camera that can get interchangeable lenses
35 and 28 mm are very good to zone focus and shoot from the hip … but for me 50 mm (viltrox 33 mm/1.4 ) almost always works, it is my personal sweet spot … having said that, when I am out with my bike I prefer the 75 mm (aka xf 50 mm/f2), die to my limited flexibility
Hey man. Love your content. Can you share the difference you felt using a teleconverter with x100v and these new lenses? In terms of the limitations you talked abt when using x100v.
I haven’t compared the two extensively. The biggest difference would be the fact that the actual lens will have faster AF and better sharpness. The teleconverter is also pretty clunky. If you already own an X100V it’s defintely worth it over just buying a whole new camera just to use a 50mm focal length
I have a question. at 2:50 you talk about taking photos of your environment rather than photos of people. Is that still considered street photography? if it isn't, what genre of photography would it be considered? still life?
As photographers we can tell a story involving people and their life even if there’s no actual persons in the frame. I mean, humans have a great impact on their environment, don’t they? Also, definitions are boring :)
I have an entire video on this exact topic! To me it is. I try to photograph the presence of people, but that doesn't necessarily mean actual physical people have to be in a photo. People might say it leans closer to abstract/architecture than street photography and that's fair, but I've always considered myself a street photographer.
As your work relies so little on shallow depth of field, would you consider a zoom lens? Or do you avoid that because you like to be restricted to one focal length at a time?
Question: Why did you opt for the XE4 for the longer focal lengths instead of using the teleconverter that is available for the X100s? Would like input because I'm definitely a longer focal length shooter and have been thinking about getting the teleconverter for X100V
The teleconverter is a great alternative if you already own an X100V. personally I'm not a fan of it's clunky design and softer image sharpness it creates. Optically, an actual lens is incomparable to it, but it's not to say you can't make good images with the converter.
PLEASE consider making more videos with the xe4 🙏 i get a lot of inspiration from your videos and I love watching you exploiting the capabilities of this little beast 🔥
Oh I will! Don’t you worry haha

Thanks Faizal. Loved this video. I’ve also been thinking of a 35mm and a 50mm perhaps on the XT-20 or XT-30 body to compliment my X100F.
I know it’s big money, but I could see you shooting a Leica Q2. I think it’s a 28mm but crops in to 35, 50, and 75.
What a great video. I just found your channel and it’s soo good! Insight, photos, and production are awesome!
Thanks so much!
Great Video! Thanks a lot. Love your wonderful Fotos ...you should show more of it! Had the same problem and found 40mm...try it!
I have tried going as wide as 27,cant get the shots I wanted out of it. Always good to experiment!
I need zoom but i also need to be versatile, the 18-135 is absolutely perfect for me
I love the way this was shot. Great stuff Faizal. Looking to get the 35mm again!
THIS! I now shoot either a 50mm on film or an 85 for digital, I feel like it feels way more delicate. Saul leiter was a godsend for this.
He was a master with it! The longer focal length contributed heavily to the abstract approach to street photography he and others like Ernst Hass had
Loved it until I made the "mistake" of buying the 50 f2… The 23 no longer saw my camera again… 😅
Now that I replaced the Fuji with a M9, I will definitely buy a 75mm (the Voigtlander 1.5 looks so dope). 😉
I am also trying 28mm atm, but I’m having hard time to adapt to it and think of just replacing it with a more classical 35mm…
2:54 absolutely love this photo
Thoughtful discussion and nice photos! Yeah, I also prefer 50 mm "normal" framing most of the time. It's easier to give the viewer a clear concentrated view of the subject(s) without having to stick the camera up someone's nose.
Hey Faizal, have you ever thought about using the digital zoom on the x100v? 50 & 70mm
Awesome VID ----I use 23mm F2 and 35mm F1.4 ......also 18-55 Kit as well .... on my XE3
35F2 is perfect for street but I started trying the 56 and that is something special esp at night.
I’ve been trying to choose between the X-E4 and the X100V for a while now and just as I start to lean towards the X100V Faizal posts this 😩
Nice job on this video, gives me things to think about
I been shooting with the x100f with the Tele lens attached and now that's all I use I love the extra reach
Here fir the WIN
Thanks for the video Faizal 🤙
Thanks for the video! I had a similar experience. I wanted a fast lens for my m4/3 camera and the cheapest option was the 25mm f1.7 which is a 50mm ff equivalent. I got used to it quickly. Now I don’t know what to do with 28mm, it just feels super wide!
Fuji lovers 💗💗
loving the style of the video!! 🦆
I would encourage trying rx100m6 or m7 for that 200mm that you can put in a pocket!
The 23mm f2 is my favorite lens. But I keep the 35mm f2 and 56mm at all times.
Tele-street Photographer Saul Leiter liked the longer focal lengths.
Late on this vid, but god damn that A7Siii footage looks good. Do you grade them yourself from Log? (Assuming you use your LUT)
Have you tried the teleconverter for the X100v? I was thinking of picking it up with the wide converter if it ever comes in stock.
What about trying the Zeiss 32 mm Touit on your X-E4 ? with is equivalent to a 48mm
Thank you. Marvellous video.
Did you consider the TCL-x100 converter or using the 50mm digital converter inside the X100V?
Try out the Konica Hexanon 40mmF1.8 + adapter can 80 usd used. Great kens with a character the XF lenses miss. I love my xf50mmf2 and 35mm1.4 but the 40mm is a real analogue experience. All my photographs are shot with the XE1 and the 40mmF1.8 @xftales
Hi Faizal out of question and I was wondering if you ever had consider using/borrowing or shooting with the X-PRO3 in some way or fashion.
Nice video. But I really don't understand why you didn't just get the tcl x100 ii
Great stuff, learning a lot from you!
6:35 - Love this. Do you have a store?
Seems like a lot of folks have been getting away from the 50, but I still love it, even without the pandemic
Very interesting video ! I wander what your opinion is about the TCL conversion lens for the X100V ?
I mentioned to another person here that I'm not a fan of the large clunky design of it. Since I've been using the longer focal lengths a lot recently its far better to have an actual lens with more elements, greater sharpness, and faster autofocus. ALthough if you already have a x100v it's not to say that the converter is not a good option. It's a great alternative to getting a camera that can get interchangeable lenses
Coulda just used the Tele conversion lens on the x100v vs buying a whole other camera tho?
Interesting and helpful video - nice images too! Thanks :- )
Thanks man!
So weird- I did the exact same thing with the same lenses… I do find I miss the x100v when I’m not carrying it now though.
Can you please try the Fuji 35mm f1.4 lens?
I'm afraid that you'll slowly in love with X-E4 😋
Fujifilm has a tele conversion lens to convert the x100V 35mm focal length to 50mm. Is that a good option? Or does the image quality suffer?
@@FaizalWestcott thank you for the reply! appreciate it!
I mainly shoot 85mm full frame for my street photography.
I love the 35mm on the x100v but once I got a taste of that tele converter it’s been so hard to take it off
@@FaizalWestcott The size is hard to argue against I’ll say that much but the ✨focal length✨
As your work relies so little on shallow depth of field, would you consider a zoom lens? Or do you avoid that because you like to be restricted to one focal length at a time?
I use my 27mm realy often 4 street photo and sometimes my 24mm , cuz i find that it works very well...
I saw Rose in one of the picture 💗
Question: Why did you opt for the XE4 for the longer focal lengths instead of using the teleconverter that is available for the X100s? Would like input because I'm definitely a longer focal length shooter and have been thinking about getting the teleconverter for X100V
The teleconverter is a great alternative if you already own an X100V. personally I'm not a fan of it's clunky design and softer image sharpness it creates. Optically, an actual lens is incomparable to it, but it's not to say you can't make good images with the converter.
