I went to the sand onsen in Ibuski which you had profiled on your previous channel. Where one's enjoyment is solely based on the skill of the shoveler: My travel partner was being burned from below and just wanted it to be over, whereas I was warm and cozy from all sides and never wanted to get out.
No, sitting in low pH is really bad for your skin and kills all your good bacteria. Its pretty nonsense to think that sitting in hot water makes you live longer. its simple human physiology tbh
I'm watching this on a particularly cold morning in the UK and wish that I could go to an onsen! Guess a hot shower will have to do the trick in the interim!!

Great video, John, thank you so much for sharing! Last year we stayed at Kashiwaya Ryokan in Shima Onsen, Gunma, and it has become one of our best memories of that journey. It's not cheap but we wanted to have that luxury experience at least once on our adventure in Japan. The beauty of that wonderful ryokan (apart from the amazing staff, delicious food and beautiful surroundings) is that they not only have a large public bath but also three traditional private open air onsen. And even more luxorious: we stayed at one of the two rooms with our own in-room open-air bath! For those who are very shy (like me) and still want to have an traditional onsen experience, this is the perfect onsen. And there's no problems with tattoos because of this!
I'd say its more likely their lives are longer because they generally have better and more natural diets with less chemicals, preservatives and processed foods. And probably less sugar too.
Perhaps but Japan is also the master of chemical enhancing too ;) both sides are strong here. Japanese junk food is still junk. Old timers are much better though, in a way, before the chemical, preservative boom. Don’t know - this is one of a few videos I’ll tackle on this subject. There’s no one thing.
That might be true for the older generation and people in certain (rural) areas, but just like in western countries, supermarkets in Japan are filled with heavily processed foods that are consumed by the majority of households.

Everything just comes together! The real question is, did those onsen waters help with the recovery of your knee? 🤣🤣🤣
The one I’m in with Greg at the end - is 3 minutes AFTER it happened, there! 😆 ouch! The forest onsen is also 1 hours after - in pain but got the shots limping.
I think those waters both caused and cured it 😂 like the crane 🐦 who healed it’s broken leg and wing sitting in the bath. Still waiting for the ability to fly!
Here is a Fun Fact for you: We live in Banff, AB, Canada, about 500M from a natural thermal hot springs. About 50 years ago a resident built a pond at his property (search Wheeler House, Banff). He put Gold Fish from a pet shop in it, and they lived year round in the water that did not freeze. Parks Canada demolished the buildings on he property about 11 years ago, but did not destroy the pond. I caught one of those Goldfish about 20 years ago from the pond, and placed him in a hexagonal style tank in our living room (filled with RO water). The life span of a Goldfish in Wheelers environment is 2-5 years. We named him 'Wheeler' and to my amazement, he is still alive today. I often wonder why 'Wheeler' exhibits this amazing life span living in water that was not oxygenated until recently, and often can have elevated nitrate levels because I am negligent with regular water changes.that will reduce the ammonium build up. I never thought you'd become attached to a Goldfish, but after 20 years, I really do not want to find Wheeler floating when I get up in the Morning. Watching your video, I can't help but wonder if Wheeler's longevity might have some clues in the subjects you cover in this video. Perhaps I should make my own video about 'Wheeler'.
I enjoy all of your videos and this one was no exception. It is interesting to note, though, on the subject of longevity, that an area like Hong Kong has a life expectancy comparable to Japan while being a conurbation largely devoid of nature and, I presume, all the pitfalls of a modern city. Clearly longevity is a complex subject that merits more investigation. Although, no one would detract from the beauty and relaxation afforded by traditional Japanese Onsen.
Recently discovered your channel and I'm really impressed with the production quality and the interesting topics. I didn't know that basically river onsens do exist. In Germany we do have some hot springs but only similar to swimming pools (at least the few I've been to). Keep up the good work and I hope to get to see another video from you soon.
Tsurunoyu is spectacular in winter as well. There is a shuttle bus service that runs between the other Onsen in the area. I'd recommend Ganiba Onsen - it has a nice outdoor bath in the middle of the forest.
i would love to go to a natural hot spring/onsen, but you would have to be naked and being a girl, uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh hope there are private reservations :/
Northern European countries like Finland, Sweden and Norway have above average life expectancies as well just a year or two below Japan’s. Similar to Onsen they enjoy hot saunas as well. Diet and fitness also plays a part. Japan’s diet is rich with fish protein and generally the caloric intake is lower compared to the west resulting in lower rates of obesity. The Japanese also eat a lot of fermented foods like miso and natto which are healthy foods that improve the health of the digestive system and helps to manage chronic conditions such as inflammation. My understanding is the the diets of younger Japanese are becoming more westernized so it will be interesting to see what effect this will have in he future.
One element of many for this channel to eventually introduce. Healthy lifestyle includes many things and this is one part. I like how there are many things in common with other countries too!
Hi, John! I really enjoy your videos! Can you tell me the name of the ryokan/onsen you showed at the 11:55 mark? I added the names to the description too. It was a beautiful place - I’ve been to Tsuchiyu before, in another video in the past, and it’s an amazing onsen. Great water and food.
I wish I’d had more video from there but it was right after I fell and destroyed my leg 🦵 filmed that through a lot of pain but glad I did. It was incredible!! Pricey hotel, glad they gave us access even though we were guests. The hospitality of Tohoku!

Living somewhere serene and quiet is the next.
Well, the wild onsen - no one is going to tell you to bugger off 😂 so it’s fine. More places are accepting tattoos but it’s still hit or miss. Always call ahead or hide them with special seals you can buy. Some rooms have private room baths too which are awesome!
@@NoshAbroad this is a great resource! Thank you for sharing. planning our 2022 trip with friends and didnt want my tattoo's to be a concern like it was last trip.
I'm not sure if I'll ever get to Japan but I was wondering if you could mention if the onsens you showcase are welcoming to foreigners with tattoos? I know a lot aren't and it'd be nice to know ahead of time where people with tattoos like me would actually be welcome
There are some onsen ryokan who accepts with clients with tattoos, but you have to double check it first with the ryokan before you go to avoid disappointment
I originally heard about tsurunoyu onsen from Sharla (who lives closeby in morioka) years back. Its been a dream of mine to visit that onsen. The new channel is not suggested much on RUclips - not yet anyway 😉 it’s going to be fun as people discover the new channel and loads of new episodes to binge watch!
A practice? I dunno - I did this a few times. The water kind of hurt my head 😂 you don’t think about anything under it, kind of clears your mind, and hair of any debris.
Always happy to see another onsen-episode, but would love one specially geared towards people with tattoos. Since many westerners coming to Japan are confronted with this issue, I imagine a video like that would do well.
Check out the site Tattoo friendly which lists all the ryokan, onsen, sento and gyms that allow tattoos. John has explained previously that this old way of thinking is on its way out. Young Japanese are getting tattoos and forgoing the onsen experience. To stay viable, the industry is changing.
I'm a new subscriber here.❤️ Thanks John for this great video from the green tea videos I just watched to this naturally beautiful nature in Japan. This is so relaxing and calming.I really love it.I am looking forward for more 🥰😍

@@lore00star Japan is not the country with the greatest life expectancy. That's Hong Kong! Followed by Japan, then Macao, Switzerland and then Singapore. All with expectancy of 84-85. I went to the resort town of Nisseko Japan and enjoyed snowboarding in the beautiful surroundings there. What was particularly nice was that the hotel I was staying at had an onsen built into it. It was incredible to come back after some hard, early season snowboarding and then soak in the onsen. You can't get better recovery from hard play and effort than that. Great episode, there could even be a whole series itself on the different onsens in the country of Japan, I wish we had them here in America (affordable and available to the general public like many are in Japan).
Japan have everything's you ever want it's. In very hot summer and freeing winter you can enjoys without a care in this world. And Japan have Manga, hot woman for you to used every night and day. Well, the wild onsen - no one is going to tell you to bugger off 😂 so it’s fine. More places are accepting tattoos but it’s still hit or miss. Always call ahead or hide them with special seals you can buy. Some rooms have private room baths too which are awesome!
There is a site by the name "Tattoo Friendly" that will tell you all the places that are and are not Tattoo Friendly in Japan.
@@NoshAbroad this is a great resource! Thank you for sharing. planning our 2022 trip with friends and didnt want my tattoo's to be a concern like it was last trip.
@@mechasduo004 There are two sites one is maintained in English the other Japanese. The Japanese may have more up to date info. look for the JP domain
@@NoshAbroad ahh the JP domain is the one I found first, thanks again!
Wow didn't expect to see an Onsen Musume poster 9:18
Great video like always John, real professional quality stuff
Very informative and relaxing video, John.
Another fantastic documentary 😊. Thank you!
There is a site called "tattoo friendly" that will show you all the ryoken, onsen, sento and gym that are fine with tattoos.
This was a very informative video on the Japanese Onsen.
Super wonderful place ever‼️👏👏👏♥️Nippon onsen
"Read the signs and keep a safe distance."

They could have at least put a skull and cross bones on the sign, jeez.
The exclamation marks help a little. LOL
I know about this thanks to Jin Sakai from Ghost of Tsushima 😂👍🏼
I originally heard about tsurunoyu onsen from Sharla (who lives closeby in morioka) years back. Its been a dream of mine to visit that onsen. Ive experienced simple onsen AND alkaline sodium bicarbonate in japan, it is one of the BEST feelings in the world (other than you know what 🤭🤫😂) I definitely CANT WAIT to try out the other ones too!! ありがとうJohn!
I didn't know until producing this video that there were 9 kinds of baths! It's good to try them all, truly an experience and worth traveling for.
Happy shinto Thanksgiving
8:27 SENKO-SAN?!?!?!
How blessed you are john! 💙
I was confused when you weren't on the old channel anymore (first I thought it was a Corona break), but I am so glad that you continue your amazing videos!
They’re not very good at saying “thank you” over there 😂 I hope the videos I made explaining the new channel here helped and - WELCOME to a new adventure!! -John *\(^o^)/*
@@onlyinjapan Thanks for your answer, yes your explanation helped. I am looking forward to more videos from you!
\(^_^)/
How can I missed this episode. Once again, thanks for your hard work! Always a pleasure to watch the Original and the only Only In Japan.
The new channel is not suggested much on RUclips - not yet anyway 😉 it’s going to be fun as people discover the new channel and loads of new episodes to binge watch!
A hike and a relaxing bath? Heavenly! It sounds like onsen therapy would be very beneficial for my health conditions.
Greetings from Miami Beach FL. We are big fans. Thank you.
Isn't there a practice in Japan where if u stand and selfprey under cold waterfall for 10 mins, u live longer, younger and healthier?
A practice? I dunno - I did this a few times. The water kind of hurt my head 😂 you don’t think about anything under it, kind of clears your mind, and hair of any debris.
What just happened to your old channel ? I really loved your video and that channel did you sell it or you just got more
I made a video a few months ago about it all :) you don’t sell a channel - to start a new one 🤦🏻♂️
Well... That was so unique looks fun anyway 😊💞💞💞💞💞💞💞💞👋👋👋👋👋👋👋👍👍👍👍👍👍👍💟💟💟💟
This is cool I want to go to this place
Always happy to see another onsen-episode, but would love one specially geared towards people with tattoos. Since many westerners coming to Japan are confronted with this issue, I imagine a video like that would do well.
Check out the site Tattoo friendly which lists all the ryokan, onsen, sento and gyms that allow tattoos. John has explained previously that this old way of thinking is on its way out. Young Japanese are getting tattoos and forgoing the onsen experience. To stay viable, the industry is changing.
That’s great except I have no tattoos 🤷🏻♂️ I think someone should make it or I’ll go undercover and see.
I'm a new subscriber here.❤️ Thanks John for this great video from the green tea videos I just watched to this naturally beautiful nature in Japan. This is so relaxing and calming.I really love it.I am looking forward for more 🥰😍
I want to try all onsens!
Handsome John. 😍👌🏼
Thanks for another video John. I can't wait for the next one.
11:52 looks sooo nice 👍
If you haven’t been to spa world in Osaka I’d highly recommend it. It’s not an actual Onsen but it’s sooo nice.
Nice video John!
Great video, good content.
1:27 The Ring Of Fire! 🙀
Great video. I like the springs. The monkeys look awesome.
Never go to japanese onsen, but every onsen in this video looks so beautiful to the point where i wanted to cry like a little kid for wanting to go to each one of it 😭😭😭
Technically increasing heat accelerates cellular degeneration.
In fact this is not the reasn they live longer...
@@lore00star Japan is not the country with the greatest life expectancy. That's Hong Kong! Followed by Japan, then Macao, Switzerland and then Singapore. All with expectancy of 84-85.
Any what do they all have in common? Well all 5 have citizens that live longer on average that all the other countries. It's a paradox!
Onsen are like saunas. They raise your body temp and activates the good stress genes like the ones you do when you exercise it's very beneficial the same way going for a run is but without the effort.

Eventhough I watch each and every one of John's video this didn't popped up on my recommend page. I don't know why. YT has to do something about it. Anyways great vid John, keep up the good work. Your videos + Live streams helps me to keep my depression in control ❤😇👍

Yep

It looks like was ""very unpleasant"" video to shoot. 😂😂😂. Next trip to Japan I will no miss one of those spots.
Just awful 😂
Another fantastic video to brighten my day. I've started studying Japanese, and your videos keep me motivated to keep through when it gets tough. Cheers and thanks for the stories, John.
Thanks Paul! I'm so happy you liked it and it's nice to see your channel grow too.
I love the new intro
If you get bored then you should go to Fuji Mountain for viewing or committing Sudoku of any unhappiness that you feel disconnected form the great Japan.
So pleases come to the great Japan without any commitment or NINJAS come for you!!
