Hi guys, not sure why the clips in this video are down a half step from the original video. We just downloaded the original performance and imported it to Final Cut. I'll look into it. Thanks for letting us know.
Ty Sam. It felt you did justice to that stupid “singing teacher” that said Harry couldn’t sing. If you hear other performances of Falling, you can obviously listen to the kinda perfection he has us used to. The passing away of this person very close to his heart unbalanced him. If you see his face, he’s crying (she died 1-2 days before, I think). Again, ty Sam for recognizing and sharing your expertise.
reasons to subscribe to Sam, from this video: - he recognizes that being emotive and sharing a message counts, even when the vocals aren't 'perfect' - most importantly, he's a Harry Styles stan
I think this is not his most perfect performance. It was very heartfelt tho and i love it. This song is about losing Someone you love and taking responsability. A very personal thing to share with everybody. He also was robbed and one of his exes died on that date so the imperfections make him human
Yeah - the fact that his first real girlfriend (ex-at the time of this) had just committed suicide when he did this performance- you can tell he is almost ready to cry.
I like the focus on letting people know that pitch accuracy doesn't have to be at 100% all the time. I used to get in my head so much about pitch accuracy, and it really sucked a lot of the enjoyment out of singing. Great video, Sam
So sad!! Many artists would have canceled, understandably. The raw emotion adds to the likability of this performance. A gifted artist and beautiful person.
I love your awesome blend of “keeping it real” criticism and positivity! You nailed this analysis! As a classically trained vocalist, I loved what you incorporated from your classical knowledge! It’s always helped me to blend my classical training with my modern/pop performances!
Sam Johnson so many things! I’ll say my biggest challenge was learning to relax a little more and allow my voice more freedom to be less “perfect” when singing contemporary music. (Kind of how you talk about in this video) However, my classical training provided me the technique to sing in an agile way that allows me to navigate the different parts of my voice and “flip” through them more easily (chest/belt, mix, head). I find that my intonation is more on point due to knowing how to place certain vowels in my voice and create room for more resonance to hopefully bring out more of my natural tone. I also feel like I’m a more dynamic vocalist when singing pop music, coming from a classical background. I find a lot of contemporary music lacks dynamic range (crescendos and decrescendos within phrases) and that’s something I try to add to my music!
I think 'oh' instead of leaning into the 'ah' sound in falling is just his accent. As someone from Yorkshire it would be quite weird and unnatural to sing falling the latter way.. As I'd pronounce it 'folling' if that makes sense. I'm not qualified in any way, just a thought
I thought the same thing when I was listening. He lost some of his Cheshire accent but not all of it and the american accent goes more for the ah than the english, but I'm not qualified either to make as expert analysis. I just know I loved it and it was a very emotional performance.
@@samhardaker7698 You are correct. He was born in Redditch, Worcestershire and grew up in Holmes Chapel, Cheshire. I mixed the shire. Thank you, I will correct it.
You are such a good coach. I hardly have any knowledge regarding music but you make it so understandable. Plus you show how to enjoy a performance, connect with the song and feel the emotions Kudos to you Sam
You are always so insightful Sam. It’s very much appreciated. Harry is such a magnetic performer that he really makes you feel things, regardless of pitch.
As far as the staging, it's a big pool of fairly shallow water. The lights are seashells with what looks to be be incandescent bulbs, but that ripple effect is pretty impressive for incandescent (usually use LED to reduce wavelengths to reduce the diffraction effects, though they look to be quite yellow). The piano and keyboard/organ have plexiglass/perspex stands and a water pump to pull it up to the top. The part that most intrigues me is how that piano handles that much moisture. I wonder if it's not a keyboard with a baby grand case around it.
Harry has the potential to be his generation’s David Bowie and I’m here for it lol Highly recommend doing some live performances by Aurora. Just watched her Greenpeace video performance of The Seed from like a month ago and she just breaks my heart with that clarity and spirit she puts into her voice.
@Andrew Murray Exactly. As much as ambitious Harry is, his music is still quite "standard" in the pop music world. There is no avangarde, no alternative, just pop music but with a bit deeper lyrics and music. Harry would have to really push the boundaries, have more freedom with his music and more creativity to be the next Bowie. Right now he definitely is a unique pop star but his music is not as experimental as Bowie's. Maybe in the future.
You're the most effective vocal teacher I've ever heard. The way you explain the functions of the voice in relation to tone and also address why these things matter is so clear, consistent and honestly healing 🙌🏿
The thing about every Harry Styles performance is not about being pitch-perfect or being perfect in any way but it's more about the raw emotions and how the songs and lyrics make you feel. It's his vulnerability and the journey that he takes you to through his performance. As a listener and a massive fan of music, the struggle in his voice actually makes me feel all these emotions I've never felt before. It's like a can feel what he's feeling emotionally and physically which is such a rare quality. I love that you appreciated this. Your video came in my suggestions, loved your observations. Subscribed. Looking forward to more :)
The little "flaws" (as if) is just the fucker reminding us he's human. He's not showing off and he could have. Everybody knows he can do whatever tf he wants vocally and he went for our hearts instead of our ears. With that been said, he sounds heavenly as usual.
Thank you, thank you, thank you, Sam. You’re an amazing teacher. I just had my first lesson with Sam and it was amazing. I don’t think anyone can sing worse than me or have less education in music, and yet this amazing dude has the ability and the empathy to make you feel like there is hope for you! I highly recommend all you people out there to at least have one lesson with him. It’s really good therapy on so many levels!!! I’ll do my exercises and get back to you, Sam. Stay safe 🤗
I adore Harry Styles. He has matured and his voice has grown so much since the start of the One Direction days and I am sure he still is working on it daily. He creates and sings many different types of songs and he is often very emotional. He seems to like to sing and compose out of the box and take chances. His sense of creativity and style is tremendous and he can be very edgy too- but he loves his mum and his fans and seems like a genuinely nice guy despite all the fame.I saw him doing the NPR show Tiny desk concerts where he sat on a stool with just a guitar and his voice sounding as clear as glass!People are too hyper-critical!! I just love his music.
I've actually tried figuring out exactly why some of my vowels are harder than others and Sam hit the nail on the head for me in this video. I have the exact same tendency Harry does in this instance. Great analysis Sam!! Love it!
Love how you are slowly bringing us into a "It Doesn't Matter Era" for music Sam :). I'm a RMT in Canada and I'm doing the same thing with my patients in my field. Pretty much most the pain science theory for Physiotherapy and Massage therapy for the last 50-60 years has now been disproven (in terms of the mechanism of action). Does that mean we aren't helping people, not at all; of course we help people. It just means we don't need to demonize motion if it doesn't conform to the "agreed upon range". Love your work keep it up. P.s Thanks for all the likes lol, hadnt looked at my comment in awhile.
Loved Loved Loved your commentary on the emotional expression vs the "perfection" of his vocal technique. You're totally right, rawness and emotion can be more powerful than technique in the right moments. We are humans and emotive performances is the connection we are searching always searching for. Thanks for bringing light to that!
!! I loved seeing your reaction and feeling all the emotion you felt while listening to him. His singing is so raw and pure, we all fall in love with him :)
Every time I listen to this song, especially when Harry sings "I get the feeling.....!" I can envision a person who has gone through a breakup, and they're pacing, and running their hands through their hair, and the pain is so raw, so heartbreaking. 💔💖
I love that you keep the focus on a) was the performance pleasing to experience? and b) will this technique serve you well in the long run? Everyone is so hard on themselves, so it's nice to see you focus on the positive while also noting a few areas to improve. You're a wonderful coach/teacher.
I love your perspective, your positive attitude, and that you emphasize understanding the overall effect and how technique can play into that in both a short setting (like this) and longer one (like a concert). Thank you for putting so much good into the world
SAM!!! it is so refreshing to see such a talented vocal coach talk about classical technique, but also just sheer appreciation for emotion and musicality, even if the performance is not 100% perfect. I've always thought it doesn't matter if they're slightly under or over pitch, if they are really making me FEEL then I could care less if the note was off or their vowels were strange. So many coaches I watch on here grill artists for things like that, and it is so nice to see you appreciate things like that!!!
I love the fact that I was able to know your channel Sam. Your knowledge with music is amazing and how everyone can seem to understand you. Keep the positivity flow. And yay, thank you for another Harry Styles video. Love it!!!
Hey Sam! I completely agree with you on the topic of pitch! I go to a music school, and as you know it’s very hard to enjoy singing if we’re too worried about pitch! I’ve found as well that if I focus too much on pitch everything else sort of falls out of place because of the mental aspect! Thank you so much for being so insightful!
Me: *comes to experience Sam giving the usual positive, helpful critiques* Sam: This stage though. I'm here for it. Me: I'm here for you being here for the staging (and of course the vocal analysis)
Ugh these videos are SO helpful! I'm not classically trained or anything, but the analysis really helps me figure out what I can do to make my voice sound better and in a sustainable way! Also your editing is cracking me up! It's so fun to watch 😁😁
Give me emotion over perfection any day. This was a beautiful performance. And wonderful analysis Sam. Thank you for being positive and passionate always. You make learning fun and interesting
I'm glad you gave special attention to explaining that pointing out every tiny thing that goes wrong isn't going to benefit anyone. My voice coach always tells me that he wouldn't be a very good teacher if all he did was hammer on the tiny things that go wrong. We'd never make it through an aria (probably not even the first page) at that rate, and it would be SO discouraging. And when you're mashing out high Cs and Ds repeatedly, working on really tough Italian/French/German, etc. you've gotta sometimes let it go and accept that you're going to whiff (a lot). I think everyone's so jaded by recordings that they forget that impressive voices/performances still have imperfections!
Man, huge props to Harry way back for still performing even if he was robbed and his friend died few daysbefore this performance. I think these "minor imperfections" on his notes explains what he's going through but he really pulled off an vulnerable, raw, emotional and heart-felt performance. You just gotta love hi and I totally agree at 9:40
I love listening to how you describe things. Nothing in particular, just in general. I could listen to you talk about things you're passionate about, all day long.
"...when I am just watching things and not analyzing them. And I do try to do that!" was so joyfully said that I had to delightedly giggle aloud. You are infectious in positivity and enthusiasm. ❤️
i agree with you on emotion vs. perfect pitch. if i want to hear every note on pitch, i’ll listen to the studio recording/edit. in live performances, mistakes and/or emotions feeding into the singing feels genuine and helps connect people to the music authentically.
I'll be honest, I never so into Harry and this is the first time I see this performance. But really, even Sam keep paused here and there to gave some coaching, I still burst into tear. This performance was more than just singing. If you watch broadway shows, you must be know a lot of moments the actor's voice sounds flat but you just really get the song, the story, the emotion. And this performance even far from "sounds bad", it actually really great. Thank God I see this video
How much I love your honesty in what matters as a teacher/participant in the emotional performance is soooo big. Thank you! I love that you teach, and are also a fan of performance and what that holds, warts and all. Keep being amazing!
I think his throat is really tight from emotion. I don't know if it was a plan to think about sad things or if he was overcome, but it makes the performance very powerful.
Knowing nothing about the technical aspects of singing and just living to sing - I love that you take the time to explain that sometimes the imperfections are just perfect. This performance was so beautiful. Often times the entirety of something makes it perfect - warts and all. ❤️
I'm pretty sure he was drunk, he was emotional, and had a shitty week and this might not be his neatest performance, but its my absolute favorite performance of his. Its beautiful, raw, and emotional. I'd take this over the studio version any day.
I always agree 100% with your reviews! As a singer and performer myself I honestly feel the day I became a "professional" was the day I realised I didn't have to always look or more importantly sound pretty when I sing! I judge at an under 16s talent contest every year and I tell them the same and to most importantly connect with what they are singing as to me that far outweighs perfection! Rawness and emotion in a live performance is what separated it from an edited recording! Love your reviews and actually learn a lot from them. Thank you so much
He was having a v very bad day.First of all, this song is a very poignant and emotional song in the first place about a complicated, deep love that has not worked out, he had just been robbed at knifepoint near his London home, and his former girlfriend- a well known British personality- had just committed suicide the night before the Brits.I am amazed he made it through but he expresses his emotions best through his music.Harry is amazing and his voice is very versatile! The total emotional draw is what attracts me as he makes more music and gets older. No more teeny bopper music but he still adds in the fun, uptempo songs.I think you detected how he was feeling on that night singing that song.I always learn so much from you, Sam!
One of his friends/ex died the day before (I believe) so he’s extra emotional, especially with the lyrics of this song. I wouldn’t have been able to make it through the song at all. He looks very sad. 😞
I have no idea how he managed that performance at such a terrible time - his attack and poor Caroline Flack. The lyrics and performance are absolutely haunting. Feels very raw and real.
You’re great!! Love to hear your opinions and also be learning at the same time! I can’t sing worth a darn and I’m sure I don’t have the best “ear” so I enjoy videos like this! And I agree, Harry is great :-). Thanks for this video!
I really love your ability to enjoy and explain at the same time......plus the statement regarding the emotional envestment can be EVERYTHING.......Thank you!
As an amateur singer, your constructive criticisms and technical explanations mixed with your understanding of the heart and emotional feelings behind the music is so refreshing and helps me not always be so 100% concerned of my technique but also remember to feel the music
Someday June! I have been putting a lot of work into my own voice and don't want to start posting singing vids until I feel ready to start submitting for professional level projects. It will happen though.
I’d like to add that an ex girlfriend he was still close with took her own life a couple days before this performance which definitely made this more difficult on Harry
Aww Sam, this was lovely, thank you. Harry is a remarkable young man and a phenomenal talent, this was a powerful performance. For me, I can appreciate the nuances of perfection but I would much rather be moved emotionally than to listen with a critical ear. And this was a very emotional performance for young Harry. I know I had a lump in my throat and a tear in my and it looked like you experienced the same, it looked like you held your breath and it seemed your eyes glistened as you held back a tear. That feeling is what people remember a performance for not empty perfection. We count our selves very lucky to have Harry Styles and I think we are equally lucky to have Sam Johnson. You are both treasures. Treat People With Kindness. 🐾⚓🐾
I love Harry and I love the fact that he doesn't only sing when he sings. He gets very emotional and I believe so many of the things he does are somehow style based. But I also love to learn so thank you for criticizing him.

Man, huge props to Harry way back for still performing even if he was robbed and his friend died few daysbefore this performance. I think these "minor imperfections" on his notes explains what he's going through but he really pulled off an vulnerable, raw, emotional and heart-felt performance. You just gotta love hi and I totally agree at 9:40
bro the passion Sam expresses is beautiful
This performance always gives me goosebumps ❤️ (Girl crush and Sign of the times performances are awesome)
The emotional content is so good, it outweighs the slight technical shortfalls.
React to Harry singing girl crush
Thank so much for reacting to this, much love from down under
Haha I love you ! Yes. Harry is wonderful. So emotional and I love his sense of style and music style as well.
Since you liked this stage setup, you should react to Beyoncé's Freedom performance at the 2016 BET Awards ft. Kendrick Lamar!!
Great rec
@@SamJohnsonVoice I would love for you to also react to Beyonce's Stevie Wonder tribute with Ed Sheern and Gary Clark Jr!!
harry is an ICON
I was never into One Direction, but I love the directions they've all gone in since! I have so many of their solo songs on my everyday playlists!
Thank you so much for this, I'm learning a lot through your videos and this performance is still very special!!! 😍😍
Absolutely brilliant analysis of a beautiful voice.WELL DONE
You’re probably one of the only people I’ll watch ads for on RUclips.
I love what you do Sam Johnson, you inspire me. Always learn so much from you, thank you x
Wow, thank you!
I love how you just shouted that it's okay to like things. I think more people need to remember that.
I'm not sure if he changed the key slightly for this performance. Lower than original i think. Might not be right but thats what I'm hearing
It is lower!
@@laramaenila I thought so. Only a little though 🙂
I love this performance. I wish I could sing it as well. So powerful.
I'm *resonating* so hard with your approach omg
Not the wholesome YT content we deserve, but the wholesome YT content we need right now.
I like the way you critique. It’s helpful without being hurtful.
Thank you!
Love this song, the video clip, his voice💝
I always agree 100% with your reviews! As a singer and performer myself I honestly feel the day I became a "professional" was the day I realised I didn't have to always look or more importantly sound pretty when I sing! I judge at an under 16s talent contest every year and I tell them the same and to most importantly connect with what they are singing as to me that far outweighs perfection! Rawness and emotion in a live performance is what separated it from an edited recording! Love your reviews and actually learn a lot from them. Thank you so much
I would rather someone sing with emotion than sing perfectly like a robot.
Italian girl here really impressed with your fantastic pronunciation of chiaroscuro!
Deborah Godley well it was a few days before but still sad
One of his friends/ex died the day before (I believe) so he’s extra emotional, especially with the lyrics of this song. I wouldn’t have been able to make it through the song at all. He looks very sad. 😞
I watch his performances a lot. I noticed that he held onto the mic very tightly in one hand and never let go like he was bracing himself.
I have no idea how he managed that performance at such a terrible time - his attack and poor Caroline Flack.
The lyrics and performance are absolutely haunting.
Feels very raw and real.
I have not received notifications from you in soooo long!!! I'm so glad the Sam's are back together! 😂💃
You are a fantastic teacher and such a joy to watch! Thank you for being yourself and sharing your insight!
Those issues he’s having sound like I he could be dealing with allergies or something. His tone sounds so much deeper than typical
I love you, Sam. You always make my day better! "It's ok to like things" is my new go to when someone criticizes something I like :D
Love Harry! Hey, Sam, you’re looking great and sounding great! Still waiting for a performance from you❤️❤️❤️
Someday June! I have been putting a lot of work into my own voice and don't want to start posting singing vids until I feel ready to start submitting for professional level projects. It will happen though.
I’d like to add that an ex girlfriend he was still close with took her own life a couple days before this performance which definitely made this more difficult on Harry
Oh no :( that's horrible. I hope he's able to heal from this. That's devastating. I pray for her family and friends too.
That’s why he was crying and singing
he was also a few days beforehand got robbed at knifepoint... very emotional overall
Hi Sammmmm!! Love your videos and think Harry has a sickkkk voice. Ready to see what you have to say about him!
I hope you like it! I love Harry
Aww Sam, this was lovely, thank you. Harry is a remarkable young man and a phenomenal talent, this was a powerful
performance. For me, I can appreciate the nuances of perfection but I would much rather be moved emotionally than
to listen with a critical ear. And this was a very emotional performance for young Harry. I know I had a lump in my throat
and a tear in my and it looked like you experienced the same, it looked like you held your breath and it seemed your eyes
glistened as you held back a tear. That feeling is what people remember a performance for not empty perfection. We count
our selves very lucky to have Harry Styles and I think we are equally lucky to have Sam Johnson. You are both treasures.
Treat People With Kindness. 🐾⚓🐾
I love when you get excited about a singer ❤️❤️❤️
Ugh I love this channel so much
I love Harry and I love the fact that he doesn't only sing when he sings. He gets very emotional and I believe so many of the things he does are somehow style based. But I also love to learn so thank you for criticizing him.
