Raining Rabbits - Pest Control & ATV Hunting - Thermal Shooting with a 308 Win

  • This ATV hunting trip was off to a rough start with all the recent rain. The planned hunting property was cancelled mid route and I diverted to another (Fortunately). Unfortunately for all the rabbits I had packed gear for a pig and goat hunt. So the little pests copped it with the 308 Win running 130gr Speer Hollow Points. Massively over-gunned but at least it's ethical, If messy........

      Top job there mate. Just wondering why you dont like using the 130's on bigger game? I started using those 130's because i wasn't getting expansion on 150 SP's . Cheers

    • @EDGEoftheOUTBACK
      @EDGEoftheOUTBACK  3 года назад +3

      @@stevenlee798 I found them just way too soft for anything but smaller game. The 308 is more my pig gun on the ATV. A large amount of shots are rear raking angles as they run away. I found very poor performance on anything but small pigs in that situation with these speer 130's. 150's and 165's punch much further in or right through resulting in an instant kill. I'd shot a few fallow deer with them originally too. I'm used to bang flop on those, especially with the 308. Shoulder and lung shots were still quick humane kills with the 130's. But I had a few that should have dropped instantly which didn't.
      That's great they work well for you. Was more personal choice that I moved to a heavier projectile from the 308Win.

      @@EDGEoftheOUTBACK i agree they are probably a bit to expansive and need to drive a bit deeper but i the 150s over penetrate and i dont like seeing rounds exit animals and potentially hitting none target animals/ objects. Something in between is gonna be worrh gold i reckon 👍

      The best was the rabbit that was mounted atop another and when you vaporized him she appears outta nowhere and it seemed like he had a ghost.🤣🤣 Of course, the encore with .308 mouse and exploding hare was an epic ending. After watching this vid and .22 mice disco party, my cheeks are sore from grinning some much. My wife and son thought I was going bonkers as I was giggling like a schoolgirl from the bedroom. I can’t wait to see what’s next? Creative carnage traps for feral cats? Or Thermal hogs getting brained with .308? Just curious, we have an ammo shortage in the 🇺🇸 USA. we can’t find bullets to purchase unless they are in some obscure caliber. .22 or .308 we must wait weeks on a rain check list for an unknown quantity and price. What’s it Like in Australia 🇦🇺 currently?

      Anmo is fine here now. But I'd say in 6 months we will have issues too. Our stuff is the same source. It just takes longer to get here. So we will have a lag.

    "Edge of the Outback", is association with "Pink Mist Productions", presents:??
    130gn bullets from a .308 provide a slightly flatter trajectory than 150+., out to 300 yds. There seem to be grades of jacket "toughness" among the brands. Some have very light jackets; great for vapourizing bunnies and prairie dogs, but may not properly penetrate a dried mud-covered shoulder pad on a pig.
    Hornady 130gn SPs, were all the go; not the modern ballistic-tipped types, which may well be better, a couple of decades on. They cleaned up a LOT of pigs and goats, though.
    I have to say; you take "pest destruction" to new heights: well done.
    For larger critters, the 155 SMK and similar, like the 155 grain Lapus Scenar, or the elate, lamented BJD HBC, work a treat. "Target" bullets they may theoretically be, but at pretty much any realistic .308 Win loading and range, in "wooded" country, they will bring down a decent stag. They do not "mushroom" like a soft-point, but, being slightly "base-heavy", start to tumble, intact, after a few inches in tissue. The resultant deep wound channel and "blended" organs does the rest. They MUST be driven HARD; to do this; be sensible and TEST first and watch for pressure signs.

    I put a Burris signature series 4x32 power on it .... I did alot of woodchucking with that rifle until I finally wised up and put a 220 swift barrel on it , sent the scope off to premiere reticle and had them make me a 1/8 moa dot , tree with 100 to 700 yds based on my 60 grain load data... Love the video. The 308 Win is really powerful! Also love the ATV -- it's indeed an all-terrain vehicle! There cannot be any better combination than the Pulsar scope and the ATV.👍👍

    Love your work. Here in the central west of New South Wales, we have a mouse problem but I was thinking a .22LR was a bit of overkill. As for the rabbits, are you sure the .308 was big enough? Keep up the great videos with your entertaining and informational comments.

    Get some hand guards for the quad. Keeps the cold and the thistles etc off the fingers.
    Wonder if the property owner wondered the next day there were so many crows everywhere.

    • @EDGEoftheOUTBACK
      @EDGEoftheOUTBACK  3 года назад

      I do use handguards but mainly in the cold. Hot days they get a bit sticky in Australia. This owner loves the crows as it means I have thinned a few things out for him !!!
