Hunting Boars with Thermal || Feral Pig, Cat & Fox Cull / Shooting Australia || 308 Winchester

- This pig hunting trip I'm out shooting boars with 3 other mates - All using thermal scopes and scanners. We racked up quite the tally of with 44 pigs, 6 feral cats and a handful of foxes and hares. Of course I'm running my stumpy Ruger American in 308 Winchester.
Wet weather certainly had an impact but we still had an amazing hunt. Having the ATV quad bikes allowed access to area's that were way out of bounds in a heavy 4x4. Some muddy adventures resulted in dirty bikes, guns & riders but huge grins all round.
I'm already scheming for the next hunting trip with these boys when the wheat harvest starts in a few months.
For those interested I'm shooting a Ruger American Predator 18" chambered in 308 Winchester. Fitted into a MDT Gen 2 LSS chassis and running reloads with 150 grain Hornady SST projectiles. My thermal scope is a Pulsar Thermion 2 XP50.

Every eradicated feral cat saves native animals. Thank you so much.
every cat eradicated saves native animal lives....fixed it for ya...
@@chrisshepherd1566 True. I've encountered so many cat owners (often vegan hippy types, the hypocrites) who let their cat freely roam about the neighbourhood, including local parks/bushland, where they do what cats do - occupy their nights killing countless small native mammals, reptiles and birds. Responsible cat owners are quite rare.
We wish we could cull cats legally in the united states darn things are terrible on all are song birds kill just to kill darn feral cats
@@jakeb3358 sad u can't cull feral ones there
@@paulw5039 Well said mate, people forget about the fireside moggy and the damage they do.
Any cat out in a paddock passes as feral.. keep up the good work boys!
Years ago I was in Sydney and a mate asked me what the difference was between a domestic cat and a feral cat. My reply was if it is dead it was a feral cat.
Any dog thats out on our paddocks that’s not ours is considered a feral, especially when lambing
I've even mounted the footpath in a car to get a 'feral' cat.........................
@@gazzas123 ,,,good one!!!

The Ginger Ninja looked so cute....because it was dead!
True Wade, a good feral cat, is a dead one.
I'm 75 years old and as a boy I used to shoot bunnies with an old single shot .22. I next used a firearm in the Australian Army in the 1960s, the old SLR. That was a terrific rifle. But i have never seen any rifles like the ones you blokes are using. I would just love to have another shot before I head off into the Great Unknown.
I hope you can make that happen. Never forget its 75 years young 😉
That .308 certainly takes care of all 9 lives of those cat in one shot. Beauty.
🤣🍻
Bit of overkill? 😁
No such thing as overkill. Only underkill 😏
Never seen so many feral pigs...guess its been a while since i went bush...
There's no shortage in some locations with bumper crops, lots of rain and ground cover to hide them.
Awesum Pig with the missing leg, love the cats falling. great numbers what a trip. well done.
Thanks Bruce
Brilliant shooting guys, protecting your native species and providing us with great footage, keep em coming. Massive fan of yours. Merv, south Wales uk.
Cheers Mervyn 🤟
Protecting Australia’s agriculture - one feral at a time.
Thanks for sharing
Love your work
Thanks mate
Id like to imagine those cats were some dirty hippies cats that they let roam free !!!
Nice shooting mate 👍
@@xrude7875 They kill billions of native animals per year. They may belong in your home, but they don't belong in the bush.
@@xrude7875 Watch this doco on the staggering damage feral cats cause. Honestly, cat lovers are so perversely obtuse sometimes. ruclips.net/video/VaB9J8JHVxI/видео.html
If a cat is outside the house yard it's fare game. One cat makes a good trip, pigs are a bonus.
Good to see you getting out there and culling feral animals. They do so much damage and produce great viewing during their demise.
Well done! 6 feral cats less is great work! Plus a few foxes! Farmer must have been real happy! 🍺🍺
For decades I've always named any ginger cat Merkin. It's an endless source of amusement - a gift that keeps giving.
I hereby grant permission to you Nathan, of *EDGE or the OUTBACK* to continue this fine tradition. Remember though, to preserve the purity of the tradition ginger cats only get the name Merkin - it's a big responsibility. I feel a man of your calibre (did you like that?) is up to this lofty responsibility.
Righto, now we've got all that shit out of the way how about an exploding Merkin with a .308 130gn hollow point??
Looks like a heap of fun, wouldn't mind joining you on a trip actually. Plus every pig you put down saves a farmer from loosing his crops. Every cat that you put down gives our native wildlife a chance at survival, keep up the great work mate and I really enjoy your videos.
Lov your vlogs. More please. Especially enjoy the feral cats biting the dust
Looks like a great time had by all. Not even put off by the muddy ground. Those cats looked well taken care of because they’ve probably been eating more mice than usually do. Thanks for sharing Nathan, & I look forward to seeing another soon.
You shot a cute little kitty cat, how could you. Seriously though, good shooting mate, and thank you for getting rid of the little horrors
Great shooting guys 👍🏻🏴
Enjoyed your video.. and the others as well. Totally agree.. it's a lot of work editing.. thanks for sharing.
Appreciate it mate 👌
@@EDGEoftheOUTBACK ah so youre on now. What ever happened to andre? The whistling with foxes guy. He sent me a video and a couple fox whistles back in the day. I had a half dozen videos id produced and he bought one. Is he still around? That was back in the vhs days.. and when i first heard about the fox out of control down under. I tried that fox whistle up here with no success.. but ive never heard any of our natives make that sound. Mostly cottontails jacks and deer fawns as prey for the coyotes and fox.
I'm sorry but I don't know the person you are talking about 🤷♂️
Really enjoying your videos from far away in the American desert. I subscribed a while ago but I don't always get your notifications. You produce very professional videos. Looks like you boys had a great time and a lot of fun. Great job and great shooting. 👍🏼
Thanks mate. I really appreciate the support and comment 👍
"I'm claiming that one. Fuck you Rodney." I'm dying! Lmao!
It just kinda came out.....
What a great outing this must've been!
Good videography Nathan, thanks for the entertainment, not to mention clearing the land of these vermin.
Thumbs up times ten!
Cheers Reg, appreciate the awesome feedback 👍
Great stuff, especially the feral cats & pigs.
Thank you.

"44 pigs, 6 feral cats and a handful of foxes and hares" -- A lot of fun, and good achievement in pest control -- that's called "two birds, one stone"👍
Excellent work! Especially on the Cats. Just think how much native wild life saved. Keep up the great work.
So many cats, so few good recipes. I'm not a hunter but a lover of Australian wildlife particularly reptiles, so I say keep up the good work on all those ferals. Cheers
Thank you! Will do!
Always enjoyable viewing. Thanks again, Nathan!

Much respect from the states, keep up the good work!
Thank you for dropping by and leaving a comment. Glad you liked the video.
I love when they auger in after getting hit on a fast run. Nice work.

Again....mice all over the place. No wonder the feral cats are thriving. Good job boys! Thanks for bringing us along!
The cats always thrive unfortunately, mice or not.
OMG YOU'VE SHOT SOMEONE'S PRETTY PET CAT 🤣 great work lads and awesome videos Nathan. I love getting rid of our introduced pest species here in NZ
Good to see you are getting some of those mongrel feral cats, keep up the good work
That must have been one happy farmer!
Always good to see a few big Moggy's go down.....IN STYLE !!
You should stuff the Ginger Ninja, and put him by the fireplace. He’d be a lovely conversation piece. NOW he is worth something.
Ha ha
The Ginger Ninja looked pretty well fed to me . Then a dinner of lead .
Prob thought it was his lucky night as bits of pig and rabbit everywhere and for some reason blackie and spot didn't seem to be out on the prowl.
Your work on the feral cats is awesome keep up the good work
Thanks mate
I just can’t believe the variety of Feral animals. Smorgasbord. Well done!
Most animals we shoot in Australia are introduced ferals.
Exactly why the Aussie gun laws through banning semi autos forgot the legitimate users. Good shooting guys.
Yea. I thought several times, "if these guys had good semi-autos, there would be a lot fewer pigs in Australia."
semi-autos aren't actually banned in australia. Just FYI
I know they are not. But I see this question so many times I just get tired of stating the same response 🤦♂️
@@EDGEoftheOUTBACK yeah i know you do!, I was just informing these fellas so that misinformation is killed.

Great video: "A Romp in the Swamp"!
Equipment weight:
A couple of decades ago, "Ultra-Light Arms" , in the USA, answered the pedestrian hunter's dream.
Super-light but extremely rigid synthetic stocks. "Lightened" actions ; fluted receivers and bolts. "pencil" barrels
The barreled actions were basically "glued" into the stocks. (The barrels were stress-relieved first. and the stocks were carefully "sealed, to prevent moisture "wicking" down any glass fibres.
Expensive? Compared to a "stock" Remington or Ruger, they certainly were, but they were intended for (well-heeled) folk who trek in seriously hilly or "difficult" terrain to bag a bunch of venison and a hat-rack.
Modern "alloy" chassis systems are also very stable, but the weight of all the Gucci gear adds up. Robust, "lightweight optics" are another challenge, especially in the thermal and image-intensifier fields. If you can "skinny down" your rifle, there is a bit of "wriggle-room" for optics options that are up to the task.
Looked like it was a blast out there plenty of fresh free range pork 😋......
Can you turn cats into slippers?
Great vid keep it up 👍
Feral cat numbers in the district must be absolutely outrageous, nice work mate and some brilliant shooting
There's no shortage of Feral moggies out west unfortunately. Glad you liked the video.
Great work fellas, the trifecta plenty of grunters, foxes and bastard cats.
Sensational video again Nathan, thanks for that. May I suggest you make Rodney wait until after you’ve visited the shitter? Not fair leaving a four legged turd for the next bloke…lol
It was fucking funny 😂
The IOC should make this an event for the summer Olympics. As far as I’m concerned…”It’s gold, gold, gold…gold for Australia!”
I hate it when I mislay a piece of equipment! Glad you found the magazine.
Bloody lucky find in that long grass 👌. That'll teach me for refilling and clipping in whilst walking along 😞
Should make a video of just cat hunting, I know it’s a lot of controversy but only us hunters Understand
All feral cats need to go if certain idiots had their way ad stopped cat culling we would lose so many native animals for good it really pisses me off that morons want to stop it.
I'll probably put something together of my yearly cat highlights !!!

Back in the early 80's we took dads semi shotgun and spotlight to the local tip. (when that sort of stuff was ok and all sorts of rotten crap was there for cats) Feral cats everywhere and ... well for some reason some were curious and were literally asking for it. Theory was there's so many people and so much noise there during the day they become complacent. I hate feral cats and have seen a few us VERY close like the one our foxie cornered in dads workshop... it was cranky enough but when I shut the door it went ape-shit... couldn't re-open the door fast enough to escape.
Love the video Nathan. Hope you do more pig hunting videos, keep up the great work mate.
That looked like a LOT of fun! Great job! Thank you!
6 cats you blokes rock great work

Outstanding effort that. Makes me want to go get my license again and buy a rifle to take this up again.
Hi Nathan you did another good video
All those big pigs were good to make homemade sausages specially this time of the year
Good job done 🙏👋🍻
That is a good point. Aren't most feral pigs full of worms?
You need do be very careful if planning to eat wild pigs in Australia. They can carry parasites and diseases. Not saying you can't, but you need to know what to check for.
@@EDGEoftheOUTBACK Thanks, I wasn't sure. Which I will explain further, While living in Hughenden, a place of wide open spaces , dust and rocks and pigs pestering the new born sheep, I was invited to eat as much pork as I could put on a fork. A mate had some wild pigs he had caught and fattened on corn for a couple of months. " Steve, come and give me a hand tomorrow morning and I will fill your freezer." After dawn and a can of reviving ale (for timing the drive) we arrived at his camouflaged pig pen well off the side of a dirt road ,off a side track and then just up a bush trail. He shot a good sized boar and we scrubbed it in hot water then he did his knife work in a flash, opening up each internal part and explaining what to look for as far as disease and whatnot. ( Being forty years ago, I may have failed to file that information to recall today but he was thorough then.) He used to be a butcher closer to the coast so he didn't muck about. Two of us could just hug and struggle that big bugger to hang from a tree. We did another big one in even quicker time as I was less of an annoyance and probably didn't get in the way so often. We flung both pigs in the back of his ute and drove back to town where he dropped off me and my pig, the bigger one. The trouble being then to ring the Pararie (?) butcher to come get him to do the business as my mate had no time that day for his shift started after lunch. The Pararie butcher couldn't come until afternoon so I had to sit about drinking moderately and brushing flies off'n muh good buddy hanging in a wattle tree outside my caravan. A good day when the butcher arrived in his refrige-van and hauled him away though. Dressed and banged into my freezer two days later he charged me eleven dollar. Maaaate, I had barbecue every Friday night, Saturday arvo and any other day of the week for ages. We got bloody sick of eating pork roasts, thick bacon, chops. I gave another bloke in the caqravan park about a armload for his family just to get rid of some. Anyway a couple of weeks later , the same butcher mate says after a couple of beers. " Steve, come and give me a hand on Saturday morning and I will fill you r freezer for Ya. How are you off for steaks?" He then showed me how to dress someone's (?) steer. Jeebus we ate like kings out West. One time I had to make room in my little tuckerbox freezer so we ended up giving the caravan park dogs a big feed of frozen pork and odd packages of unmarked meat. The big skinny starving great dane next door down, ate a whole frozen back leg of pork in under five minutes, bone and all. He looked pregnant and we sat and watch , have beers and bets on wether he would die or explode. He lived, quite well and got a lot fatter over the year I was there.
Oh, yeah the pigs didn't have worms. He said.
Some classic moments in this one. Gold. Thanks for sharing mate.
Thought you'd like this one Robbo 👍

much more noble than shooting endangered species for trophies, good shooting! get those ferals!
Great shooting Fellas. Pop as many of those feral bastards as you can.
That's the plan 👌
My dad grew up on a dairy farm in the 1950's in Canada. Every cat there was a barn cat and they bred like crazy. He didn't think much or them, so when he figured there were too many, he would grab the 22 and walk around and thin out the population. he also told me that he would sit up in the loft of the barn and shoot the Tom cats in the hay field as they would come over from the neighbours.
Some of those foxes are as thick as bricks
Like captain hook said, lightning has just struck my brain, maybe you need to look into a lever gun or straight pull bolt gun if you have to shoot a bolt gun of some kind. It'll make your follow up shots quicker. I thoroughly enjoy your videos here in Mississippi!
Thanks mate. I do like my bolt action, it's slightly better if I'm cycling quickly over the padded rail on the quad bike. Horses for courses, A lever action would be mint in close though.
@@johnmead8437 yeah, handy for standing or leaning against a tree/post. But for low positional stuff I like the bolt better. Same with a pump action, not ideal on a rail.
Hi Nathan, love your videos. I used to hunt when I was younger and I have seen the damage those feral cats do to the wildlife. Good on you for getting rid of the vermin. A quick question, can you see clearly of a day time with the thermal scopes? Keep up the good work mate.
