Predator Hunting Wild Dogs in Australia

- Wild dogs - The plan was a sit and wait in a location the wild dogs have been spotted on a dead cow. I have had my 4G trail camera on this pile for a few weeks. In the week prior to this hunt I had regularly been seeing a few younger dogs on a cow carcass each afternoon. The week before I had shot another dog here with my 6.5PRC. My son in tow for his first experience.
This time I was back with my 6mm BR with intention to remove another or two of these troublesome predators. Watch the video and you'll see how everything unfolded to plan, which is rare but no complaints.
All animals shot are in alignment with the NSW DPI Wild Dog Management Plan 2017 - 2021.

If you take 500 mg of vitamin D daily the mosquitos will leave you alone. No kidding, give it a try.
Love your work and your commentary Nathan. Really appreciate the effort you put into these hunts. Ignore the bleeding hearts mate, the job you do is a necessary one.
Appreciate it Paul 👍
Well said
You’d think the so called bleeding hearts would care more for the native populations of australias animals
Those who hate what you do have never been on the land to see firsthand the carnage that the feral animals inflict on livestock and wildlife.
☝️☝️☝️💪
Fact Sir.
it doesnt even have to be wild dogs. I live in the country where theres no leash laws. My neighbors lets their hunting dogs run loose at night and as a free range guinea fowl farmer it doesnt end well for me. Ive lost almost my whole flock to those dogs, down to my last two, thankfully a male and female.
To be fair they are the same people who think farming in it self is abuse of animals
I reckon you do an awesome job, the videos are really professional and very informative, mate. Admire your dedication to the hunt. More power to you. Also, great that you're introducing your young fella to the great outdoors, hope he enjoyed everything.
Thanks Robert. The little man is a fiend and loves it. Just hard with the night stuff but we do alright together 👌
10 years or so back I used to hunt a lot of ferals in QLD, including dogs. I set up trail cams a few days out to see which water holes they went to first thing every morning. Up here they often ran in packs (bob tails). When I found their water hole I would go in and get in position around 4AM and wait. I would ID the alpha male and take it out first. The others would not know what to do and hang around long enough for me to pick then off. I used a .243 Weatherby Vanguard on a bi-pod. Average range was 70-100 metres.
Very nice 👌
As always brother , we love your content. Wild Dogs are even a problem up here in the rural areas of Brisbane. People need to learn about the damage they do. Keep up the great work mate
I've heard you guys have a bunch of trouble with them. Absolutely they can cause some serious damage.
A lot of councils now have a bounty on them. Usually about $50. Differs from shire to shire.
So frustrating sometimes. I never however feel that waiting in the countryside is wasted. There is always something of interest going on. Great video as always Nathan.
"Boring as batshit". I love it. Is that an Australian expression or is it unique to you? I found your channel last week and watch as many of your videos as I can. I like your explanations, and you certainly can turn a phrase. Here in the States, wild hogs, foxes and coyotes are a real problem, and they are hunted constantly because of all the damage they do to property and livestock. And of course, there are those who cannot abide killing those poor creatures. They do not educate themselves about the harm caused by these animals. Thank you for the great content.
I think it's just Aussie slang that one 😂. Really glad you enjoy the video's, great to hear.
We have many issues with these introduced species in Australia. There's definitely people who have not taken the time to understand the "why" and just think it's all mindless shooting. Couldn't be further from the truth although I absolutely enjoy my hunting and work.
@tidelovinyankee1368 When those bleeding hearts get on a hunting channel, and then cry and rant all about it? They'd be 'having a sook' mate. 'Spitting the dummy' as well.
Our politicians are like yours, they are 'as bent as a dogs hind leg' cos they 'Couldn't lie straight in bed' the bar-stewards..
In slang English we say "he/she went went batshit" for when someone loses their temper.
Good to see you back again Nathan. Skilled work as usual in helping control a problem in Australia. Keep up the good work.
Appreciate it Michael 🍻
You are like a professional guide presenting an inspiring
lesson in conservation .... except its animal pest control.
Every time, it is always about the task ahead and the job
that needs to be done. From eating on the job to getting
the job done. I watch because of the no frills approach.
There's a few others on RUclips like that. Condensing it
all down to 15 minutes or less, super effort. A long comment to make up for my lack of comments
Martin I hugely appreciate that mate. It's certainly an interesting thing to share from the correct aspect with no bullshiiittteee.
Nice work. People need to realise these dogs are not cuddly companions but ruthless killers of anything they can catch.
Exactly mate 👌
Great work as always Nath, I really feel for you mate having to contend with those mozzies, there's got to be some natural deterrent that you could use and not give yourself away. Looking forward to your next stake out, cheers mate. 👍😎
Gotta get the wind right anyway. Bushmans works but when they are that thick the little buggers find all sorts of spots to maul you 😩
Breaks my heart you're shooting dogs, but it has to be done i supose. Thanks for doing it humanely, and thanks for great content! ☺️
Thanks for sharing, I enjoy your vids, much to learn. Cheers. With your thermal gear I’m guessing it’s premium gear, what is it and is there much descent thermal gear out there at the budget end?
Hi Tony, I've got reviews on the channel of the kit I use if you have a dig around. Unfortunately cheap and good thermal gear don't mix in the same sentence 😞
@@EDGEoftheOUTBACK thank you brother, I might just have to get the day timeskill level up o speed for the time being…! Last question; I have recently saw a dog wander out of some scrub not far from my bolt hole up in the sticks. 100-150m from the house. He was scenting, scanning then retreated, I figured I’d get ready to have a crack on the 3rd night at sunset but as you’d expect, that opportunity didn’t present. What would be you best couple of whistles/brands that might coax him out?
Any point dragging a chook carcass or something else about the place to draw him in…
Hunting dogs is a large skillset. Depending on the area, time of year and food sources. Dragging a scent trail around might work, nothing to loose if it doesn't 👍
Good work mate, some people have no idea the damage these wild dogs do.
Thanks Ross, exactly 👍
A good video to show the likes of me that it's not all beer and skittles. Just curious if those mozzies settle down after a time or are they that vicious all night? And what do you do to protect yourself? As I'm guessing you want to avoid anything that gives of a scent and therefore your position. Thanks again.
Thanks mate. I cover myself in Bushmans and the mozzies when this thick still find a hole. You need to get the wind in your favour anyway. Won't matter if you smell like whatever. Dogs will smell you.
Always enjoy grabbing a beer and sitting out the patio to watch your video's. Keep up the good work mate. There's plenty of us who appreciate it 👍
Thanks Duane, appreciate it mate 👌
You don't have to explain yourself to anyone, what your doing is so important for the environment, your dedication is second to none, anyone who never done this kind of work won't have a clue!!! cheers from Ireland.
Really appreciate it David 👌
Another outstanding outing, Nathan. I always look forward to your videos and I appreciate the efforts you put forth in not only filming but also the amount of time and patience you put into this.
Really appreciate it Bruce 👌
Patience, experience and equipment is the key to good hunting and you have it all.Well done
Thanks mate 👌
Well done mate. Great info on the the effort involved in this type of pest management.
Surprised the KFC even made it to the property.
Maybe you had a tweeny on the the way out. 🤣
Chips didn't make the drive 😜
Gday good work thanks for the videos do u still have the 204
Thanks mate. Nah the 204 was sold off when I built the 6BR. Much more suited to what I do.
I've been badgering my wife to let me get a new rifle with a thermal now since watching your vids. She finally gave in and said yes.
That's the ticket, just blame me 😂
Ive always been a pretty good shot with small calibre stuff like .22 and air rifle, but pretty inexperienced with the bigger gear. How you think i can get more experienced without spending bulk coin?
You don't need to spend a coin if you can shoot well with a PCP 👌. They take more control with follow through than a centrefire.
Greetings from the US.
Just stumbled across your feed a couple of weeks ago. Really enjoy the content. You’re a wicked shot. Trying to get your name out here.
I hugely appreciate that Eric. It's a real struggle to grow things ATM with the platform not sharing content like they used to. My growth has really slowed down lately 😩. Stoked to hear you really like what we get up to in Australia 🍻🍻🍻
Love these vids mate, keep it up! Also; what kind of tripod are you using these days?
Still running my Innorel RT80C mate. Has been awesome.
Good day Nath, just to tell you, im here in the UK and i noticed the hunters element fingerless gloves you use on your vids and decided to get some they arrived today, what a cracking item they give full feeling to the hands and a great grip when handling the gun, im chuffed i spotted them on your vid. Thanks mate. Bob👍
They are a great item eh. Every time I'm out shooting or hunting, I have mine on. They hold up surprisingly well too 👌
What was the thermal scope you were using? it was crystal clear.
I run a Pulsar Helion and Thermion. Review on both up on the channel 👌
You know mate, the KFC in the tree was the worst part of the clip - don't you know what gets put in that stuff ????? Great vid as always, and the tech support to make the best use of your time out in the paddock is a fantastic idea !!!
Thanks Paul, gotta maximise efficiency 👍
Good work again pal. On a different note, I've done a bit of work at a chicken process plant that supply KFC, haven't eaten it for 25 years since. Rather take my chances on the dead cow.😱
I don't want to know 😂
Keep up the good work mate, love watching your videos. Such a difference to what we do on the other side of the world. 🇬🇧
Thanks James. Glad it gives some insight.
Good video. What are the types of deer? Also have you tried a thermacell for the misquotes?
Bushmans sorts the mozzies. But when they are that thick the little buggers always find a hole 😩. Fallow and Sambar Deer in this video.
The Hunter Valley is looking green, which part of the HV do you shoot ?
I hunt all over the valley mate. Like to keep a little discretion and leave it at that 👍
@@EDGEoftheOUTBACK totally understand. Not been up to the HV for around 8 years. I used to install coal train loading systems up around the Singleton mines. It’s a lot greener than my last visit….straight shooting mate 😃
I have always been amazed how easy it is to see the projectile in flight on sunny days. Great shot of a great shot.
That shot showed up really nicely didn't it. Thanks Don.
Love the slowmo shot on the white dog 👍👍👍👍🇦🇺 I just bought a 6.5 creedmoor and can’t wait to get home and use it
You'll have fun with that rifle for sure 👌
Good stuff. Most people have no idea how destructive these wild dogs are to native animals and livestock!
Some of my favourite memories are time spent in the bush with my dad. I'm glad you can share that with your family too!
Thanks Matt, appreciate it 👌
Just got home from a hunting trip and after watching this I'm keen to head straight back out again...another great vid Nathan
Get into em mate. Hope you had a good trip.
Great video Nathan - your comentry is always informative and entertaining. Question (Newbie) - when your switching over to the thermal scope on site, do you not need to sight it in again?
Thanks Vince. I use high quality rings positioned consistently and set with a torque wrench. They hold zero bang on 👍 (many won't). So I just swap and start shooting.
Mosquitoes are bad this year. What do you use to help you cope with them?
Just Bushmans red can spray. When they are this thick the buggers find all sorts of gaps to bit you on/around/through and under. I hate them 😩
@@EDGEoftheOUTBACK little mongrels. Thanks.
Hunter alley now has Sam bar? I knew of reds and fallow must be travelling up from the coast
Hey Nate, noob questions here - do you set the scope at 200m when you have setup the overwatch spot, and then back it off to 100m for night, or on the scope do you know where to aim lower/higher depending on range, or finally, is bullet drop not that important with that particular type of weapon?
I generally run a 200m zero on my centrefire rifles 👌
Another Awesome Video mate Big Thumbs Up! Love the Slow Mo
Cheers buddy 🍻
Did you swap the scope from glass to thermal on the 6BR in field? Or did you take two rifles? Just curious how you would swap scopes in the field and know that’s it’s zeroed. Cheer, good hunting as well.
Absolutely I swapped the scope in the paddock. Carried the thermal gear in. I just use really good rings and return to zero has been excellent 👌
Well done. Like to see you move into Bangkok. Plenty of Soi Dogs there!
Great video Nathan, the long sit pays off mate, you’ll get the black n white dog!
I watched a video this week of Mark Ripley sitting for hours! Another great marksman!
Great video as usual, stay safe mate! Beautiful place the Hunter Valley!
RIPS 260 stuff is awesome. 4 dogs less now. Surprisingly the black and white dog was actually two.... Near twins.
@@EDGEoftheOUTBACK congrats on getting both dogs mate did you get vids of that hunt. Keep up the great work us viewers really appreciate it your content is excellent take care and stay safe cheers Yogi 🤙🤙
Hi Yogi. Four dogs have been shot since filming this. But no I only mucked around and filmed this particular afternoon. Chews up to much time otherwise.
There’s only two things wrong with your videos - they’re not long enough and there’s not enough of the them. Can’t wait for the next
Thanks Derek. She's been a bit hard to get footage lately with all the flooding occurring in NSW. While not directly effected the paddocks are all uber wet and we can't get into most of them.
Loving the slo-mo shot 👍👍 great vid as usual. Can't get close enough to a dog to loose an arrow into, might see if the ol tin whistle works on em.
Some area's they will come into a predator call. I've never had it happen up my way though unfortunately.
Well planned and executed mate. Nice work.
Cheers Robbo, worked out nicely 🤙
Another great video Nathan, well done.
Geoff.
Thanks Geoff
Cool Nathan
City People have no idea Mate what’s going on, thanks for sharing Cheers
Appreciate it Barry 👌
Another one bites the dust well done Nathan .How long have Sambar been that far north mate I have heard of them being a fair way south of you and also Rusa and Chital south of Sydney but I didn't know they were in the Hunter .And yes the KFC must be eaten.
Sambar have been around a while but are hugely nocturnal. We also have Chital in some area's (I shot one two years ago up here). Rusa, thousands of them a few hours north of me around Foster etc.
Great work, what a tease on that second dog. Last outing all I got was over 100 mosquito bites on my back and knees so I'm out until cooler weather and thicker cloths.
Tons of effort!! Lots of time, frustration and boredom. I have been there, and I still am... tripods, thermals, calls, packing it all in, atmospherics, and which damn load data did I use??? Candy Crush is my friend for sure...
Yeap it's a passion you have to jump into head to foot eh 💪
Absolutely brilliant trail cam setup😎👍
Thanks mate 👌
That slow mo was unreal, see the slug fly and all. Nice clean shot is a whole lot nicer AND safer than the dog grabbing a bait
They don't like baits out there. You can hear the traffic in the video. Backs onto a heap of residences 👍
Lots of patience pays off, top stuff. Can't wait for the next video 👍
Question. You venture into thick vegetation and bushland all the time in search for your target species. Do you ever come across snakes?
I haven't seen one all summer (touch wood).
@@EDGEoftheOUTBACK Thank goodness. Every time I see your videos I always imagine snakes slithering all around.
Another great video...thumbs up to the 6br😉👍
All the best from the UK..
Thanks Nigel 👍
Top quailty video mate! Great commentary and explanation 👊👊🔥🔥
Cheers mate 👌
Awesome footage of the Pill in flight on the white dog! Keep up the awesome conservation work!!!
Thanks Mike. That shot came up really well which was pot luck 😁
Curious what s a good online site for binoculars?
2 k price range
Thanks
Love the videos
I run Maven's mate. Get onto Josh, tell him I sent ya. They punch with the big boyz, I sold my Leica Ultravids when I played with the Maven 9x45 B2's

Please ignore any negative comments about what you do. You are abiding by the law and You are providing a much needed service. Those who ignorantly critize your work are clearly uneducated. 😂😂
Plenty of those today but the mute button is strong 💪
Good Job Mate ! - How far do you typically need to drive for a HUNT ? Thanks
Varies, a lot of my dog and fox stuff is around 30min from home. Pigs etc are further.
love what you do, I can't believe there are people who complain about killing wild dogs, they are an absolute nightmare, especially during lambing season. they kill anything they can catch. anyway another great video. 👍 👌
Lots of woke snowflakes with no realistic views mate. Oh well, it's what it is.
Always enjoy your Vids
Nathan, great job...
Appreciate it mate 👌
Fantastic shooting bud 😊👌❤️🇬🇧
Thanks Stephen
I gave it a thumbs up even before watching it because every single video you make is excellent.
Really glad to hear that mate 👌
Great work Nath - as always 👍
Cheers Barry 👍
All thums up for you cobber. Keep doing what you doing. Don't worry about the dogooders.
That's it Daryl, I always like a dig at them 😁
Good shot!
I certainly would not want these feral / wild dogs in any area frequented by livestock. " So many wild dogs, so few bullets!"
They can do a lot of damage unfortunately. Some don't but they are the unusual critters.
@@EDGEoftheOUTBACK In this instance, somewhat like humans! :)
G'Day Nathan. Do you get a $120 bounty for wild dogs and $20 for a fox in NSW like we do in Victoria?
No we don't, there's no bounty at all in my area of NSW 😢
Top job mate, one less killer roaming around
Exactly Peter 👍
Great video mate! Try to give out a few barks/howels. I bet it is the dominant dog in the area and he/she might come in to challenge you.....and your fast friends 😉
They are bloody weary in this location. I'm always trying the caller and with immature dogs about its more miss than hit as they are timid around other dogs.
Love it mate, well done. Vids are looking super polished and professional.
Thanks mate, slowly upgrading gear thanks to Patreon 👌
Always a pleasure watching your video's- great shooting, great production & very well spoken! Cheers
Appreciate it mate 👌
Hope you've been getting out a bit too 👍
Only just found this amazing channel, already watched 5 of your vids, u deserve more subs
Thanks Max, it's all good fun mate. Really glad you enjoy my vids so much.
Thanks for the amazing content
Also thanks for liking my comment ur the first person to like one of my comments
Keep up the great job you’re doing for the farmers, natives and environment mate.
Cheers Mark
Nice work Nathan! Here in Victoria we get a bounty of $120 per dog, I was just wondering do you have a bounty in New South Wales? Regardless of whether you do or don’t, there’s not enough of us out there targeting Wild Dog’s. Keep up the great work, and thanks for sharing, cheers and happy hunting.
Thanks Mark. No bounty in my NSW district unfortunately 😞
@@EDGEoftheOUTBACK That’s a shame Nathan, down here 120 bucks doesn’t really even cover your costs per dog, and we get 10 bucks per fox, so that helps. But I don’t know if I’d be as inspired as you are, if I wasn’t getting paid by the land owner as well. Cheers and happy hunting, love your work.
Well done, great job and nicely filmed
Cheers 🍻
Thanks for doing the eco system a favour by restoring the natural order back
Great video as always Nathan.
Thanks David
Great patience Nathan.
Enjoy your videos, nice shooting ... Regards from Texas...
Cheers Harold, great to see you watching them from over there 💪
Great video mate, I love your setup & was totally wrapped up in the hunt with you. Looking forward to more from you.
Glad you enjoyed it 👍
Isn't that KFC cold mate? Never been able to restrain myself long enough to find out if cold KFC is still delicous ^^ Nice commentary and tips throughout, gives us a good insight into your work.
Thanks Dave. The twisters are nice cold. The chips cold 🤢. Always eaten fresh and hot in the car.
Enjoyed this one mate. Great job
I don't see why people are complaining about you hunting down these buggars.... Those POSs are annoying!!! Keep doing what you are doing mate... Love your videos 💯
Thanks Oscar 🍻
Another great video Nathan. Thanks again.
Appreciate it Oliver
Another great Friday night at the movies! Bill Collin’s should be giving a critique……👍
😂
Great vids and shooting mate.
Thanks John
@@EDGEoftheOUTBACK waitings all part of hunting, as you say, you see and learn more Nathan.
All the very best
Hi mate, have you had any issues using your thermion on the 308? Thanks in advance mate
Zero issue mate, works well.
Cheers buddy, just sent my thermion xq50 back, had it on my 308 and when I put it back on the 223, a white line appeared through the centre of the screen, horizontally, wouldn't go away. Struth mate, pissed me off, been a week and still waiting

Love your videos, excellent shooting and approach. Patience is the name of the game. Look forward to more
That's it Derek 🍻
Done a lot of shooting round the Hunter valley, never knew they had sambar. Learn something new every day
There's a few pockets 😀
Another great instructional video mate regarding tactics and methodology when hunting the feral wild dogs.
The dirty bird does cop a flogging as your snack of choice. 👍🏻
Thanks mate. Strangely the dirty bird feed triggers a good result. Who'd have known 😜
As a retired damage control trapper, I love these videos.
Thanks 👍🏻
Well done mate. Top video.
Appreciate it Robin 🍻
Great work and great video dude!
Thanks mate 🍻
Man, thermal optics would make a huge difference to my trips, but damm they're pricey for quality.. im out here with mounted spotties and headlamps lol and have to really check my targets at night, lots of cattle and sheep around .. your videos are really cool! Thanks for the inspiration
Glad to hear it mate. Certainly is an expensive game. But fringin addictive 😩
@@EDGEoftheOUTBACK i love it out there, it's been great after all that rain.. full creeks and dams.. just did 4 days out in the scrub and already planning my next hunt... thanks for posting the videos, I learn a lot from your efforts
Great work as usual mate!!
Cheers Jake
keep up the good work mate. I hope oneday the bush becomes dog-free.
Nice work Nathan. 👍
