The video was pretty biased against California, a lot of the nature parks actually don't have many tourists. When saying that CA is crowded and polluted, he was showing a busy SoCal beach that is located in a heavily populated city. Of course it will be busy with tourists there. I lived near Big Sur and locals don't hide spots, all the best spots are already well-known. And if a person talks to a local, I'm sure they'll be happy to point out some cool locations.
Also, California is very environmentally conscious. It is often the tourists who are leaving trash at locations. Carmel, Monterey, have strict laws against littering and even against light pollution. There are no big street lamps in much of the area. California is huge on protecting marine life and natural landscapes and actually has some of the most aggressive environmental policies.

People used to be astonished that most American's didn't have a passport. The more and more reactions I watch (mostly British, some French and German) the more I hear them say this very thing. "Why would American's travel when they have everything plus more in their own country?"
I want to travel my own country so much. Heck, I want to discover my own state. Maybe once this virus has died down we'll be more willing to take some time off work and go adventuring.

I don't think you understand just how huge the country is. Alaska on the map looks small, but is the largest state in land mass. It's about half the 48 mainland states.

Another interesting experience is the Chesapeake Bay bridge/tunnel, which links the tip of Virginia's Eastern Shore to the Norfolk area in the main part of the state. It's about 17.5 miles long (28 km), and it consists of a combination of long bridges and tunnels that take you across the Bay. In the middle you cannot see either side. Me and my family recently drove from NW Washington to San Francisco and back and while California was really fun and interesting, I’ve gotta say that I much prefer living in a rainforest. Though we did pass Crater Lake on the way which we camped at a few years ago and dear god it’s one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been. The lake is deep enough that you could stack the Eiffel Tower on top of the space needle and the Statue of Liberty, and still they wouldn’t poke above the surface. The colors of the water are mind blowing blues and greens, and the stars are extra visible due to the lack of light pollution. Plus, the fact that there is a small volcano in the middle of the lake is rather interesting.
Aside from Oregon and California, some of my favorite places in Washington are Mt. Rainier, Fort Worden, Snoqualmie Pass, and the Hall of Mosses in Olympic National Park. For anyone looking to explore the top left corner of the US, I would highly suggest those places.

And don’t get me started about the sky… it was a privilege to visit. Locals were very kind and Glacier is more beautiful than I could have ever imagined.
I must say though… California is massive, and really has it all. The Yosemite Valley is utter perfection. And the Redwoods are secluded mystical giants; a walk among them is enchanting… and no crowds there. I had trails to myself. Obviously, there’s the beautiful coast, and Death Valley, etc. there’s really so much.

I live in Washington, and as beautiful as Seattle's temperate rainforest is, the rest of the state is also very nice - a lot of people tend to forget that Seattle is actually a very small portion of the state. The rest of the state isn't a temperate rainforest, meaning that it doesn't rain all the time and is instead a mixture of a lot of different ecosystems. This includes shrub steppe, which is similar to the terrain of Afghanistan from what I understand, wetlands, prairies, forests (often forested mountain ranges) and estuaries. It's probably the most ecologically diverse state in the US, and might be one of the most ecologically diverse places on earth because it also has two entirely unique ecosystems; the Olympic rainforest and the Columbia Plateau scablands.

I work in Alaska for one of the fisheries and I would say that one of the main issues with traveling to Alaska is the airfare and the high price tag of just about anything here. Basically, the main cities of entry into alaska would be Anchorage or Juneau, that flight alone round trip would cost around $150-200. And then to get to other small islands, which would be to get to some touristy spots, would cost around $500-800 and that's considering you've planned this in advance and the time of the year your going AND not to mention that in order to travel to most places in Alaska it would require the small planes, which seat like 20-30 people. Its an old plane, very loud and you can very much feel every bit of small turbulence. Now when i say this place is expensive, its EXPENSIVE. I've been to Dillingham, AK where a gallon of orange juice cost $20. I was shook. Obviously, the main city of Anchorage doesn't have prices like that, its pretty standard prices, its traveling outside of the main cities of AK where the prices surge. I'm currently in Dutch Harbor now, and to lodge at the only hotel on the island would cost $200 a night, and thats on weekdays and its NOT exactly 5 star...

If u ever go to Colorado check out the Great sand dunes park it’s sooo beautiful it’s feels fake like a movie. U have snow capped mountain and woods on one side and the desert looking sand dunes on the other side and no it’s not hot. U can drive to spend just a day or camp and do it like right in the middle, there’s a hot springs pool nearby it too where u can swim and lounge at too

You should check out the travel vlog on Tom Thorton's channel. He is a Brit that did most of his US visit by Amtrak. A safer alternative than hitching if you are not up for a car rental in the lower 48. I don't know the details, but seems like they had at least one house sitting gig so they were not having to spend money for hotels or Airbnb.

I am from New Hampshire aka the only state that borders Maine. Maine is definitely a gem, but NH is an extension because the beauty continues past the border.
I think Alaska isnt visted as much because people don't have the money and/or time to see it. Also many of us have horrible winters already so when we can travel we tend to go warm.

I went to Alaska on a cruise ship a few years ago. It’s very pretty but unless you have lots of money to spend a lot of time there and to visit all these pretty spots you really don’t get to see much of it as it is just so big. I went to about 4 cities, travelled to top of glaciers by train, did dog sledding with huskies, watch indigenous peoples shows, lumberjack shows, saw totem pole carving, and cruise ship travelled in through fjords so you got to see icebergs and glaciers. One day we even watched a whale swim along side our ship and seals going by jumping in and out of the water. You will also see bald eagles. We were very lucky as usually they get cool wet weather in May but we got hot sunny weather the whole time so it was a fantastic trip. Norwegian cruises ship left out of Vancouver Canada and travels to Alaska making 3 or 4 stops in Alaskan cities and then back to Vancouver and took a week. My friend lives in BC so worked well for us.

If you’re traveling on a budget Alaska isn’t a place where you can easily drive all over the State. It’s a HUGE State! There are HUGE Mountains and roads are hard to come by let alone gas stations.
Travel by small plane is as normal as taking a bus.
I drove all day from Fairbanks to Valdez and only encountered 2 other cars, 1 gas/food station.
    Food is expensive.
    (I had family there)
My friend drove from Colorado to Anchorage with and there were bears all along the road the entire way. I’m scared of bears!

When I lived in Paradise California (it’s a town that burned down a few years ago) I used to drive down to Sacramento (State Capital) through the rice patties.
Often there would be a dense low fog making it very difficult to drive.

If you ever get the chance to come to virginia they got a rebuilt james town and york town and some of the largest military museums in the world. (kinda cool to see all the old planes and ships and also the actors recreating colonial life as well as native life) you can access the Appalachian trail from the western part of the state as well as see some historic towns. if you ever end up in Seattle check out lake serene up near goldbar its a lake in top of a mountain like crater lake but smaller also the enchantments is one of the most beautiful hikes in the country. also neah bay up near the top of the state is one of the best dive sites #period I know you said you want to camp across the nation check out the reservation camp grounds they are an awesome place to rest across the nation. if you going out in the usa hiking and camping for long periods of time make sure your group has a gun..kk our country has a lot of predators of the animal and human variety. (several kinds of bears, cougars, mountain lions.) might want to take a class on safely camping around large predators xd enjoy

If you like hiking, New York is also a really nice place to visit, we've got a lot of really good hiking trails in the Adirondacks and they're usually not to crowded, also the caving is really good in NY state if your into that, just be aware that while we are blue in most elections that's because we have 3 or 4 major population centers that are very liberal, but a lot of the rest of the state is very rural and socially very conservative. Also be aware New Yorkers are very blunt and tend to just kinda tell you how they feel, and just expect the same from everyone else

As I commented in your "How Big Is The U.S.?" video, I've been fortunate to travel around the U.S a goodly amount.
Firstly, I would rank Maine higher on the list; I grew up traveling to Maine every summer to visit relatives there. I traveled to Mt. Katahdin (sp.?), I've been to the ocean there more times than I can count, and I've hiked around in the woods ... absolutely enjoyed every day I spent there, even the rainy days. (My extended family has a place in the woods on the shore of a small lake, and I enjoyed just staring out, on rainy days, across the lake and listening to the sounds of the loons! So relaxing!)
I live in New York State, and it has a number of beautiful places (I particularly like Letchworth State Park - nicknamed "The Grand Canyon Of The East"); the Adirondack Mountains aren't majestically tall like the Rockies, but they are so *very* scenic and beautiful!
I traveled out West, visiting Colorado and Wyoming and Idaho and Montana ... and all of that area is just *gorgeous!* Especially the Grand Tetons! I took so *many* pictures while going through the Grand Tetons!
Looking back, I regret that I didn't take a side-trip to Alaska when I had the chance. Yes, it would have been a *very major* 'side-trip', but I'm *sure* it would've been more than worth it!
Hopefully you'll get to do some traveling to your 'dream states' ... keep working to make it happen!
Again, 'Domo arigato' for the video.

Alaska is gorgeous but make sure you are well-prepared before you go there. Everything is VERY expensive because it all has to be flown in or trucked thousands of miles. The winter weather and wildlife will kill you if you don't know what you're doing. The mosquitos in many places in summer are so large and thick that you must wear netting at all times. So, be properly prepared, and then enjoy!

I can only endorse the Upper Peninsula of Michigan 1000 times. You will need to rent a car or hook up with a friend that has one, though, it is a wild place with a minimal amount of infrastructure. Or you can backpack. Do not go there during June or July, there are really bad biting flies! But starting in August and especially in September, it is an excellent place to camp and hike. In the Pictured Rocks and Porcupine Mountains area you can camp on the shores of Lake Superior and feel as though you are alone in a vast wilderness. There are bear and wolves that roam wild, moose, deer, and all other sorts of wildlife.

But I did want to say that here in Oklahoma all state and national parks were closed with COVID. I figure it was the same throughout the country. They are beginning to reopen for the summer.
