  • So today I’ve bought a £150 2018 Mercedes sprinter engine sat in a shed on the floor for 3 years after it had a bit of an incident with a road sing!!! Valuable treasure or expensive boat anchor??? Best strip I’d down and find out ! Om651’s here we go again

    try a scotch pad on the damaged crank journals, sometimes what you are looking at is just bearing material stuck to the crank surface, you will be amazed how they clean up if you get lucky.

    Back in 85' Dad bought a new Mitsubishi L300, turns out the oil pumps were poor and he drove about for two weeks with the oil light on due to being an idiot.... It actually got so hot it welded the shell to one of the rods, engine got rebuilt by a tractor repair guy and was still going at 160k when it got traded in.

    • @Ragnar8504
      @Ragnar8504 6 месяцев назад

      Bit of bad luck! Generally L300s were bulletproof, especially the Diesel engines. My parents bought their first one used in 1986, that had been mistreated by the previous owner and had a few issues, like brakes that tended to stick. The weirdest fault was a partially open alternator winding that made the alternator pack up as soon as the engine got properly warm. The fault made itself known on a trip to Italy with four adults, a four-year-old and an infant in the van, plus luggage for two weeks. None of the Italian mechanics found the fault, they charged the battery and sent us off. The Austrian border guard on the way back helped push the van across the border as it cut out right at the barrier. A tow later, an Austrian garage then managed to find the fault and replace the alternator.
      After the third or fourth round of seized brakes my parents decided it to replace the 1982 four-speed petrol with an almost-new 1988 six-seater window van, ultra-poverty spec (vinyl floor and headliner, plain dark grey seats, untreated hardboard door cards on the sliding doors and rear hatch, no panels underneath the windows behind the sliding doors, no rear heater or speakers, no power steering, not even a clock), 5-speed manual with the 51 kW naturally aspirated Diesel. That lump lasted until 2012 and about 250k km when it finally failed an MOT with a full A4 page of major issues. It might have been fixable had we known the garage we know now but it would have needed a lot of welding and essentially a full respray. It did need a head gasket or even head (the 4D56 heads are known for warping, about their only achilles heel). So it was sold to Africa and probably still drives around somewhere.
      After much research and heated debates it got replaced with a 1996 posh GLX van, same engine and gearbox but nine seats and all the fancy stuff like power steering, carpet, fabric headliner, rear heater, digital clock, rev counter and plastic panels/door cards all round. It even beeps if you turn the key off without turning the lights off. What was supposed to be a temporary measure until a suitable 21st-century alternative had been found is still alive and kicking, although on light duty because there's now a 2009 VW Golf Plus daily. The Mitsi gets the long trips with plenty of luggage and/or people. We love it to bits but it could use a bit of a refresh, metal-wise. Otherwise I'm afraid tinworm will claim it within a few years.

    Looks like you got yourself a bargain Al, those 651's are getting on the pricey side now for a decent low mileage one. Hopefully the machinist shop will be able to salvage the crank and the other block and you'll have two decent 651's.
    Fudge's Capri workmanship is cracking.

    Love these videos keep them coming, many years ago when I was 19 ( now 70 ) I had a mk 2 Cortina with a very smoky pre cross flow 1500cc engine, in my defence I only had limited tools and time and money so I bought a set of rings big end bearings and lower gasket set, I managed to remove the rods and pistons without taking the crankshaft out and replace the rings and big ends, I ran that engine smoke free for 3 years and then sold to a mate who kept it until it returned to the earth from whence it came, I did try this on a mates mk 3 Cortina with a cross flow but we couldn't get the piston passed the crank, I might add I have improved my tool kit and skills over the years.

    Took a new LT 35 in for its first service many years ago, picked it up drove across Brum twice , drove down M5 then M4 to the Bath jtn, as I’m going round the island there is a horrendous buzzer sound, pulled into the lay-by, got out, oil all underneath. Recovery took me to VW garage, sump plug was missing,. It seems the tech was distracted and forgot to torque the finger tight sump plug.
    Luckily engine was ok!
