Barenboim has his tempo variations and small, small imperfections, but it's all worth it, considering how beautiful the music turns out. Unlike others, he makes me fall in love with the sonatas.
Sen Der I often fall in love with imperfection as its the players with most passion that will deviate ocassionally from the music due to their own powerful interpretations
Around the time when he composed this sonata (which is sometimes nicknamed "domestica") B. also wrote a Bagatelle op. 33,6 with the advice "con una certa espressione parlante." Betthoven often translated verbal dialogue into instrumental music. I think it can be a key to the 1. mov. to think of a dialog between wive and Husband. The initial theme represents the wife, which is insistently asking for something the husband isn´t inclined to concede. After being patient for a while the husband gets angry imitating the female theme in the bass, while the right gives chaotic sounding trioles. Yet the conflict isn´t resolved and the husband finally leaves the house for a drink or two. At this point starts the second mov.
I play this sonata too and having read this lovely insight can imagine I will find it difficult to imagine the wife wanting and the husband (ie. me) not conceding. Perhaps it's just an Aussie thing. ;-)
Most pianists play the first variation of the Andante in a way the composer didn't intend. Some play the right hand as the melody, while others surpress it so that it's barely heard. Of course, Barenboim balances it just the way Beethoven would have wanted it.
The second movement Andante reminds me of the slow movement of Haydn's "Surprise" Symphony, complete with the loud chord at the end intended to wake up the audience.
Can't help but wonder what the two 'thumbs down' people might want/expect from this lovely Sonata - in addition to the artistry and adherence to text from the great Daniel Barenboim...??
I have extreme feelings about this interpretation - I fervently dislike the interpretation of the 1st movement (he plays it very well though), myself opting for a more "Mozarty" interpretation, but I think Barenboim is perfect in the 2nd movement. I just love how he brings out the polyphony. The 3rd is brilliant as well, although I have some issues with his left hand at times. Don't get me wrong, I think he's a top-notch pianist, it's just... I have my own vision for this sonata, I just can't ever seem to get it exactly the way I want when I play... There's just so many ways to play this sonata, and all of them are interesting!!! It's amazing how versatile it is - you can listen to it played by different people, and it will not cease to amaze and inspire!!!
Sebastian Skowron it’s pretty hard to find many interpretations compared to other sonatas on Spotify in my experience... it’s pretty tricky to get this sonata right I’m studying it now
In the 1. mov. Beethoven gets very close to Mozart. And Barenboim being a great Mozart player, does it very well although maybe a bit to slow. Great legato cantabile sound. (Edwin Fischer was one of Barenboims teachers!). The 2. mov. Beethoven makes a tribute to the viennese winehouse music & gemuetlichkeit, including an increasingly drunken state which he portraits in the variations. In the 3. mov. the protagonist is fully drunk, which is transferred to music with great and bizarre sense of humor. (See the incredible performance of Sokolov). Altogether the underrated masterpiece shows little known side of Beethoven before he was burdend with deafness.
A man who dealt with struggle but was never afraid to show the humorous side of his world! Great synopsis for this piece, the 1st movement being seldom and sort of operatic in its own respect! Your summary of the 2nd movement really perfectly captured what I had in mind, a gang of brothers enjoy drinks and laughter, and Beethoven goes on a drunken tangent, to me, this is the most characteristic movement in this piece because it parallels what you would expect from Beethoven! And the 3rd movement is just the great humour we've begun to see in Beethoven, you can't explain it but I could only say it's his way of pointing at life and laughing at it! So many sonatas after his plaguing deafness contain the humour that he has -- a stubborn student of the musical joker Haydn (my metaphor of Haydn), he really does capture his own characteristic humour in his works just as Haydn did. He once detested Haydn, but I could imagine he would never even attempt to ridicule Haydn later on as he surely would see how much he has learned from the old master in his reclusive period. Beethoven is a musical kaleidoscope which will never decay! He takes in the influences and reflects his own style separate from his contemporaries through effective use of the variation form and writing characteristic pieces which resemble the previous masters before himself!
Signature Beethoven style of surprising & defying expectations of listeners. It's like he's waking up the listeners to sit still right away with that sudden drop in tune out of nowhere like like throwing that tune off of a cliff! Really is a unique composer Beethoven is. So experimental & unorthodox. Beethovens works are such a treasure for classical music aficianados😍🎹🎼🎶
What’s tough about the first movement is that there are so many slurs whether 2-note or phrase that you have to voice correctly. Without contrast this would definitely sound dry.
Сегодня 10 октября. Я слушаю 10 сонату Бетховена. И так каждый день месяца у меня звучит Бетховен.. 32 в любой день по желанию. Когда месяц короткий то и 31 тоже в любой другой день
+Orebit I think piano teaching is probably much better now than it was when I was young. I spent 6 years being made to play "Spanish Shawls" repeatedly !
I feel like this Sonata was very experimental. Lots of volume contrast and pseudo counterpoint, trying new things but within a more superficially classical style.
I am listening to each Beethoven piano sonata, in order. One each morning. Number 10 here is just wonderful.
MONTH WELL SPENT !!!!!!
Day 21 will have you listening to my all time favorite piano piece of any kind or time - The Waldstein.
Day 29 no time for breakfast lol
Я слушаю каждый день по сонате Бетховена...
32 и иногда 31 прослушиваю дополнительно, если дней месяца не хватает

lol I laughed in the end too! Such a witty, clever, funny and beautiful sonata! Absolute genius
I think Barenboim has the best Beethoven recordings.
No
@@nobody-ce9ut So you're saying he doesn't think that way?
@@anariondanumenor9675 I'm saying he doesn't have the best Beethoven recordings at all

Rainer Langlotz interesting...
Such fanciful bs.
What do you think Beethoven meant in the second part? Thanks for your comment, it has become very interesting to play this sonata.

lovely. i have the good fortune to own a player piano and get to hear these live at home.
Very fortunate!
Suublime e magistrale.
perfect accuracy! And the lilting theme in the second movement is so nicely shaped. wonderful!
What sets classical music apart from the other art forms IMO is that it can make you feel things that you can't put into words
Aaron tewelde Any art form can do that if it's quality art.
Magnifique interpretation d'une très belle sonate.
The most fabulous pianist of all time !
Hallie Kruger The most fabolous pianist of all time was Chopin, with Liszt and Beethoven.
Adria Torras and Mozart

This earliy sonata of Beetoven is very pretty and also sophisticated.
Amazing ❤👏💐

So THAT's what its supposed to sound like. It didn't sound like that when I played it, although I blamed it on my lazy useless piano teacher, Mr Webb.

Too funny how the fps rate is too low to display his fingers in playing

I think that the cantabile section of the scherzo seems horribly rushed even if played at tempo
Эту сонату нужно более строго играть, Бетховен не писал столько ритынуто и темп одинаковый нужен.
