  • András Schiff - Beethoven Lecture-Recitals
    Wigmore Hall (London, UK), 2004-06
András Schiff last performed the complete Beethoven piano sonatas at Wigmore Hall from 2004-06 to overwhelming critical acclaim, with the editor of the Guardian, Alan Rusbridger, describing one particular performance as ‘a riveting mixture of erudition, analysis, passion, wit and memory’.
On the day before each of the eight recitals in the series, the world-renowned pianist, pedagogue and lecturer gave a lecture-recital in which he explored the works to be performed. Deeply engaging and insightful, these thought-provoking lecture-recitals, recorded live at the Hall, are available below as eight audio lecture-recitals.

    LECTURE NOTES:
    ----------1st movt--------------
    1. @2:55 the 3rd theme is reminiscent of Schumann: all the inner voices, one voice shadowing the other
    2. @4:56 last note on Beethoven's keyboard😂..This made my day~
    3. @6:02 an operatic recitative
    --------------2nd movt: variations--------------
    4. the first variation movement in Beethoven sonatas
    5. @8:30 harmonically funny because every time the melody stops on a harmony it's the dominant.
    6. @9:29 the accents are always on the offbeat/wrong place
    7. @11:01 1st variation: think string quartet, the viola & cello are playing the motif, the first violin is accompanying with syncopations
    8. @11:35 2nd variation: pointillistic
    9. @12:42 4 bars of a little bridge
    10. @ 12:56 3rd/last variation, then ends with a crashing fortissimo C major chord
--------------3rd movt: scherzo in sonata rondo form------------
    11. in 3/8 time, but you are hearing nothing but 2's.
    12. @17:06 he changes the bass chromatically
    13. @17:39 he pretends to end it like a big concerto but ends quietly(on the very lowest notes of the piano of Beethoven's time🎹, so this sonata hits both ends on Ludwig's piano~).
    14. @18:24 Lydian flavor: G major with altered 4th
