My grandfather was a P-51 pilot with the 8th Army Core, 361'st Fighter Squadron. Now his music was always Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey ( which I love) but he actually liked this song when I was young in the 80s. He said it brought the adrenaline what it was like, which he didn't like talking about. Great reaction.

Bruce Dickinson had two uncles who were RAF pilots in WW II, so he didn't have to delve that deep to write this. He'd heard these stories all his life.

Missed hearing Churchill's speech at the beginning - really sets the tone for the rest of the song.

  • @barriehull7076
    @barriehull7076 Год назад +63

The song's lyrics are written from the viewpoint of a British RAF pilot fighting during the Battle of Britain (1940), the first military engagement to be fought entirely with aircraft.[4] The artwork depicts the band's mascot, Eddie the Head, in the cockpit of a Supermarine Spitfire, one of the principal aircraft to participate in that battle.
"Aces High" is one of Iron Maiden's most popular songs, and has been covered numerous times.[5][6] It is featured in the video game Madden NFL 10, the MTV show Nitro Circus, and Steve Peat's segment in the mountain bike film New World Disorder III. Colin McKay used the song on his part of the skate video Plan B Questionable. It can also be found in the soundtrack of the game Carmageddon II: Carpocalypse Now.
Google/Wikipedia so be as it may.

I dunno if I am describing it proper as a "guitar dive", and it's not overly obvious (it's kinda in the background - a "nuanced" effect, I suppose), but it's there and it totally emotes the planes doing those sideway dives.

Maiden were early masters of a niche of virtuosic riff metal/speed metal. If you look at it, this area gets pretty close to certain types of punk. Of course, punks were not singing about fighter planes and speed metal guys were not signaling about social revolution.
Also, production is SO 1984. Digital effects and recording had bleached a lot of the instrumental warmth out of recordings. There's a reason old school bands kept their recording and effects analog. Yet the feel totally fit with the fast and day-glo 80s.

Aces High is about the Battle of Britain where Britain's Royal Air Force (RAF) flying mainly Spitfire and Hurricane fighters took on Germany's Luftwaffe flying BF 109 fighters, BF110 fighters, DO 17 bombers, JU 88 bombers, HE 111 bombers and JU 87 dive bombers.
During the Battle of Britain German forces tried to gain air superiority so they could then invade Britain via Operation Sealion.
The Battle of Britain officially lasted 3 months and 3 weeks from 10 July - 31 October 1940.
When played live the following quote by Winston Churchill is played
" We shall go on to the end. We shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be. We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender."

Bruce sings in a famous metal band, he is a licensed pilot for the band's 747, he is an accomplished fencer (sword fighting), as well as author, horror film maker, and Iron Maiden themed beer brewer.

"Aces High" is about the Battle of Britian, from the British standpoint of course. The pilot is taking off in a Supermarine Spitfire, one of the two main fighters at the time (the other being the Hawker Hurricane).

The version on Live After Death has Churchill’s “Fight on the Beaches” speech as the intro. My dad is a WW2 history buff and he was shocked when I was able to recite that section of the speech in perfect Churchillian dialect lol.

Bruce Dickinson (lead singer) has a commercial pilot's licence. He has flown 757s. He got bored, he said, sitting on a plane going from place to place. He's also an Olympic standard fencer, and has competed internationally. He owns a brewery and an aircraft engineering and servicing company.

    Aces High -
There goes the siren that warns of the air raid
There comes the sound of the guns sending flak
Out for the scramble we've got to get airborne
Got to get up for the coming attack
Jump in the cockpit and start up the engines
Remove all the wheel blocks, there's no time to waste
Gathering speed as we head down the runway
Gotta get airborne before it's too late
    Running, scrambling, flying
Rolling, turning, diving, going in again
    Running, scrambling, flying
    Rolling, turning, diving
    Run
    Live to fly
    Fly to live
    Do or die
    Won't you run
    Live to fly
    Fly to live
    Aces high
Move in to fire at the mainstream of bombers
Let off a sharp burst and then turn away
Roll over, spin 'round to come in behind them
Move to their blindsides and firing again
Bandits at eight o'clock move in behind us
Ten ME-109's out of the sun
Ascending and turning our Spitfires to face them
Heading straight for them I press down my guns
    Rolling, turning, diving
Rolling, turning, diving, going in again
    Rolling, turning, diving
    Rolling, turning, diving
    Run
    Live to fly
    Fly to live
    Do or die
    Won't you run
    Live to fly
    Fly to live
    Aces high

Bruce Dickinson flies their plane (originally a 757, now a 747) - "Ed Force One" - and is a licensed commercial pilot. Bruce is also a world class fencer, author, beer brewer, and holds numerous honorary degrees - truly a man for all seasons. Iron Maiden is still touring (promoting their most recent album "Senjutsu", with Bruce at 65 (all the rest are over 60 as well) and still kicking ass. Here they are last year in Rio in front of 250,00 attendees: ruclips.net/video/s-TgTFGDUnU/видео.html

Andy, when you said you don't know how they could keep up their stamina you would be surprised. Back in the day, they made up their own soccer team facing off against other bands they toured with such as Def Leppard and the Scorpions. They also were known to mix up their sports and had fun training. Bruce Dickinson always was always full of adrenaline based energy and someone that's needed to see in concert. It was funny when we first saw him piloting the Maiden jet. Chris DeGarmo, the ex-lead guitarist of Queensryche, left music and became an airline pilot too. He has a sideband with his daughter on vocals these days but his piloting seems to be his main moneymaker.

That bassist is THE founding member of the band, Steve Harris, it’s his band and he writes a lot of their music. That’s why you hear the bass so prominently. He Jams hard! Yeah, to be in his band, you have to keep up with him.

Most people added the extra info on Bruce being a licensed pilot and i am sure some noted that he also is an Olympic fencer who competed for the UK.
But one thing i did not see (yet, or overlooked it) is that the bassist not only kicks ass as the lead composer of the band, but.. he plays "finger style" and never uses a plectrum.
That high pace? yeah it's all in the fingers man ;)

About time we get back to some harder edged stuff, been awhile. Tons of great Maiden tunes, if you want an epic, try Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner. They are more prog metal, though they have elements of thrash and early on, punk enhancing their music. The fact that they tackle historical and uncommon subjects just adds to the vibe. All time greats, legends of rock, saw them twice with Paul Dianno and 4 times with Bruce, they were always a heavy payload kind of show. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎸🎶
