You're soooo right, applying oil is not like you're laminating your hair in plastic 😂😂😂 You can literally douse your hair in oil, jump into a pool, and your hair will still absorb the chlorinated water. I've tried it. 😂It's not really a barrier. I looooove using oils, but they're not a permanent layer that will iron clad LOCK everything in. We think of oil almost like a forcefield, but that forcefield is so breathable & temporary. Oil can be rubbed off, oil can drip off, oil can be absorbed over time, oil isn't plastic. 💯 As a higher porosity person, I had to figure this mess out quick because the LOC/LCO method NEVAHH worked for me. Yes the whole using oil to seal kinda is a scam 😭 my hair sucks up everything but humectants keep moisture locked in for me the most, which mainly comes from my styler. I love emollient rich products though, and always will but it doesn’t reactivate the way humectants do.

Being natural myself almost 10 years, when the natural hair community was huge back then we literally had to make our own products in out kitchens and figure out methods to help ourselves. Okay...this is priceless information. I've been natural for about 12 years now and could never understand why when I use the LOC method on my hair it would only be moisturized/hydrated for a certain amount of time. The length of time depended on the type of products I used and how well I applied them. Your explanation helps me to understand that hydration is only going to last for a certain amount of time and the products I am using is simply there to slow down the drying out process and not to prevent it all together. So thank you, I now get it.
Also consider that water is the key to maximizing moisture retention. The best time to moisturize is directly after shampooing and conditioning when your hair is holding its capacity of water.

@@ibyou5062 you could watch some of his other videos if you haven't already since it's been 10 months but I usually just use a leave in that has A LOT of oils and maybe even butters in it. I don't always feel like re moisturizing my hair every 3 days so that's what I do instead of only using an oil or butter( like Camille Rose leave in milk, it's hard to get out the bottle though lol, or Shea moisture smoothie, which can also have a decent hold if that's what you're looking for). Saves me a step and lasts longer. Then I put it in medium to small twists and call it a day. It lasts me a week and sometimes even 2 weeks without needing to re moisturerise or rehydrate.

"Boxed natural hair care"! Thank you for saying this. That's what I feel everytime I watch/read some natural videos or articles. Our hair is unique and different, even on the same head of hair. A lot of 'miseducation' comes from the hair care companies chasing sales.
I realized at one point that my hair didn't need oils layered with cream stylers and a leave in to be moisturized, at least not in the summer and definitely not when I'm doing a twist out. otherwise, may hair would take at least 48hr to dry! Now that my hair is color treated, I've been actually introducing oils back into my routine despite the no oils craze, especially in the winter. I'm not 100% sure if my virgin hair may not have still benefited from oils in the winter now that I think about it. Effective hair care really is about just recognizing what your hair needs and when. I think the difficulty for us with kinky/ curly hair, is unlike people with straight hair, we didn't get the luxury of growing up learning our hair...we spent most of our childhood learning a damaged version of straight hair. We had to to figure out our own later into adulthood when most of us are super busy and have other priorities. That may explain why naturals are so focused on finding shortcuts or an easy one size fits all guide.
"Do what's best for YOUR hair..." I hear people say this. However I think most of us do not know how to diagnose our hair. We think we do but in fact we do not. Thus we dont know what's best for our hair. We try to piece all of it together but there are ALOT of pieces. In the end I think we have to partner with a stylist that we trust to help us shift through it all and understand our individual heads of hair.

This video was so needed. LOL. I use butters all the time in my hair, and have no problem hydrating the hair when it needs it. As you said, heavy oils only impede the hydration from being lost, not prevent it. That's exactly what happens when I reapply water on my hair that already has heavy oils applied. Great video.❤

I think people aren’t realizing everything can simultaneously be true. I wear my tight curls in wash and gos. I wash frequently 4-5 days. But product is used to create a desired finish. I like a soft juicy look to my hair so I will use creams and/ or leaveins and sometimes I light oil with my gels. The ashy helmet hair look with the 2 gels ain’t my thing lol. I still cleanse and repeat the process a few days later. And I know my creams and oils aren’t hydrating or moisturing but just lubricating to my desired finish.People are so quick to jump on hair care ideas without understanding there’s truth in all of it - you just have to know why you’re doing what you’re doing. I have repeatedly told people that oils, even vaseline does not form a waterproof barrier on the hair. It slows the rate of evaporation. People act like it's a impenetrable seal that stays on forever until it's shampooed away. I've even told people if you oil your hair, then wet it in the shower, doesn't the hair get thoroughly wet even though most of the oil is still on there? No matter how much one explains everyone is not going to get it because everyone doesn't have common sense. Just help the ones you can.
Oil is for scalp. Oil only gives the lubrication to the hair making combing or brushing easy. You are right oil cannot seal in moisture. People like argue about this topic.

I have short curly hair. All I do is wash n go. I use leave in, curl butter, and avocado oil. I wash once a week. I saturate my hair in the shower almost everday and apply the products. Works for me. Great info! I appreciate your directness, too much confusion/"experts" out there.

I had grown them since 1998. It’s taken me 6 years to even find a brand that I feel is giving what I needed it to give. I do not do wash n gos. I keep my hair braided at night and I wear it out during the day (except for when I don’t have to leave the house). I keep my hair routine very simple. I think some are thinking of sealing hair with oil like you seal a piece of wood with lint seed oil. It works that way for wood but not hair. Thanks for clarifying this ❤️ very thorough

Its funny how I have said things in this regard for years. How so many things people have suggested didn't work for me. And I had people literally tell me that something was wrong with me for saying it. I stood ten toes down and I meant that. Thanks Narada for telling people to stop the bs and get back to the basics.
It sounds like you are trying to comprehend a concept that you aren't ready for. You need to establish understanding of fundamental hair care concepts, then you supplement and build off of that with videos like this.
I use the same thing on my hair as I do for my body. A half pound of 100% shea butter,a half pound of 100% cocoa butter four to five ounces of 100% real vitamin E oil. This makes about five containers. My hair has always been ridiculously thick whether straightened,permed or natural. I became ill so to make things easier, I wash once a week and wear my hair in two braids. I wet my hair everyday in the shower just to feel fresh . Nothing special at all. I've been through cancer and I now have other health issues. I've never worn weaves or wigs and when I want to be, as my grandson used to say, foxy, I undo my braids and spritz with water mixed with conditioner. It's not that deep. 😊😊😊

Who in the world thought that ‘sealing’ means that your hair cant be remoisturized or hydrated?? Sealing is just supposed to mean slowing down the escape of the water. But we are not going to call them Slowers?? I mean, isnt that why we apply leave-ins with humectants?? So that we can draw in moisture. This is some serious overthinking. I would have thought that the simple fact that the hair can get wet DESTROYS that theory. Sheesh! You hear something new everyday.
It's the same concept except for y'all it should be easier. Just like it's harder for your hair to dry because of the clustered, confined state of the strands, that makes it easier for your hair to retain moisture. The same rules apply for locs. I've always used hair grease during my retwists and only needed water afterwards to remoisturize. The grease was always enough for my hair. With locs you just want to keep it light. I recommend starting off with just water and some oil for your locs
Nope, sure don’t. You’re so right I know from experience. I use grapeseed oil and my other fave is almond oil. They do NOT seal in any moisture at all. My grapeseed oil gives my natural twists a nice shine and my almond oil softens my hair. But my bergamot hair grease, that has petrolatum, seals in my moisture for daaays, almost two weeks actually. I love my hair grease, and so does my hair. And she likes her preferred oils too LOL.
Great video! I agree people should find out what works best for their hair. It is good to get suggestions and opinions but at the end of the day people should hop off the trends and stick to what works for them. Like you said everyone's natural hair is different.

Excellent video! When this oil and no butter trend started thats when this info started circulating. I actually no longer use oils and butters but I have always known what Narada is saying to be true. My "4c " has been flourishing just wearing it with leave in only or 1 (one) light styler.
I have 4c hair as well. And even with applying oil as the last step in my DAILY moisturizing routine, my hair is still dried out by the end of the day. I am going to experiment with not using any oils at all and see what happens. Most moisturizing products have some oils in them anyway, so maybe the extra "sealing" with a separate oil isn't even needed. 🤔
You speak the truth...in so many ways. Some of these things people are doing on RUclips in the natural community is scary and hilarious. The DIY I see on some channels Yikes!!! are more harmful than helpful. Some of the hair care products on the market that OVER charges for shampoo, conditioners..etc... is all about marketing and label appeal. You have find the products that works for YOUR HAIR. Not the latest trend. I almost fell for that years ago with the Shea butter sealing in moisture. But for me all I found out was I am allergic to Shea butter and my hair started falling out. Thats when I started becoming an ingredients junkie lol. And got into cosmetic chemistry..

Thanks for this video. Some people think just because their hair kinda looks like someone else's per ( the hair typing system), that the same things can be used to get the same results. One size does not fit all is so true. And thanks for giving further understanding on moisture of the hair. And also how not to correlate the softness and texture change that you get with heavy handed product applications with hydration levels. I still do not really know when my hair is dry. I just wet it and let the water sit and allow the hair to absorb the water, like you advise. I then apply oil and I do this ever other day. So I think it is working well. You have provide great education on hair and it clear our hair is not difficult or complicated at all just misunderstood. Nothing to do with what you said, but you’re about 4 months out from 1k videos. Edit: just finished, it makes a lot of sense. Many people do the same with mental health and even myself being a professional that has gone through school and studied, you still need the practice behind it to really understand what certain concepts mean. But people like to self-diagnose and label and even many professionals that have been through school don’t know what they’re doing. It makes sense that the same is being done in the hair industry and people think it’s so simple when it isn’t.
Thank you for this video! I love how you say to stay in our own bubbles and do what's been working for each of us. There’s no one size fits them all and we can't push our own narratives forcefully on people and tell them everything is wrong they're doing.
I alternate this and the gel from soap aloe (aloe maculata) for my weekly wash . My hair feels noticeably thicker and has more volume. It takes a bit of getting used to no foam but believe me this is worth it. Every month I use a normal shampoo which I dilute with water and a little cheap conditioner. So about 20% shampoo and I eyeball the water and conditioner. Its a good way to use up those shampoos that don't quite work but you have to use up cos it was expensive. Remember the foam isn't what cleanses your hair. We seem to be under the mistaken impression that we need suds or foam to cleanse our hair.
Finally someone telling the truth ! I think people felt the need of putting oils on their hair after applying a leave in because those products had a lack of "nutrition". It was like using a bottle of mainly water, with a very very amont of humectants and oils in it. And because they didn't want us to understand that, they created the concept of "sealing".
Cases in point: 2012 (The Desert, USA) - hair was fried by 12pm; trichologist said “wash and gos are a no no” 2016 (Hard Water, USA) - LOC works for me; jojoba, Joico Moisture Recovery, Shea Moisture styling milk; no heat for a year; most retention of my life 2020 (Better Water, USA) - last flat ironed hair cut; some product junkie fun times; found best spray bottle; too many hair videos Present: tried Ayurveda; hair changes/likes heavier creams; basics are real: water, trims, leave in, silk scarves; time, energy, peace > hair
(Can’t speak for anyone else but) I’ve never heard black girl curls say wash every 4-7 days. I just know there are people who state how often they redo their wash n go when it’s ‘done’. And done is different for everyone. So I think that contributes to those numbers because people are seeing a pattern. Personally, I’ve told people I wash every 4-5 days INSTEAD of remoisturizing. And I do that simply because it’s less of a hassle *for me* to just wash and reset my hair (wash n go), then to part, apply product, and finesse my hair into another style, even if it’s just a puff (which actually gives me more tangles). For all that time and effort, I might as well just wash it 🤷🏾♀️😂. That’s my life though. Someone else may not mind the remoisture process (whatever that includes for you) because it’s simpler and easier than washing and styling it. That’s their life.
We've been conditioned to dread washing our hair. And with some of these wash day routines, I can see why. Now that I've learned a simpler way, I actually look forward to washing my hair. Because of my exercise routine, I do wash my hair every 4 days
I think sometimes we're addicted to the idea of there being a secret potion to everything or a Konami cheat code to accomplishing good things, when it's really just about simplicity, consistency and finding the right method for you. I think this is what's causing a lot of these companies to take advantage of their consumers (including me), charging people 100s of dollars for what a dime store hair grease and water can do even more effectively with time and patience.

I think people aren’t realizing everything can simultaneously be true. I wear my tight curls in wash and gos. I wash frequently 4-5 days. But product is used to create a desired finish. I like a soft juicy look to my hair so I will use creams and/ or leaveins and sometimes I light oil with my gels. The ashy helmet hair look with the 2 gels ain’t my thing lol. I still cleanse and repeat the process a few days later. And I know my creams and oils aren’t hydrating or moisturing but just lubricating to my desired finish.People are so quick to jump on hair care ideas without understanding there’s truth in all of it - you just have to know why you’re doing what you’re doing. Thank you for using straight up logic. People do perpetuate information and just say what everyone else is saying without typically using logic or just blindly trusting a "professional". Sealing in moisture never made much sense to me. Kris McDred talks about this a lot. It's time for people to come out and talk about this so I appreciate this video!
I have repeatedly told people that oils, even vaseline does not form a waterproof barrier on the hair. It slows the rate of evaporation. People act like it's a impenetrable seal that stays on forever until it's shampooed away. I've even told people if you oil your hair, then wet it in the shower, doesn't the hair get thoroughly wet even though most of the oil is still on there? No matter how much one explains everyone is not going to get it because everyone doesn't have common sense. Just help the ones you can.
Oil is for scalp. Oil only gives the lubrication to the hair making combing or brushing easy. You are right oil cannot seal in moisture. People like argue about this topic.

The no oil founders have an air to me that you have to depend solely on them for everything to have decent looking hair. I’ve been mastering wash and gos lately which last at least 2 weeks. I try to wash more often, but yeah 🤣 I like Jennifer Rose’s videos because she’s comes off genuine like she’s not trying to shake you down for coins. And I Stan for Moknowshair even with her shady/questionable time as a stylist 🤣🤣
I think I can dig Jennifer with a grain of salt but I think the industry has definitely changed her outlook in not the best way honestly.

I have short curly hair. All I do is wash n go. I use leave in, curl butter, and avocado oil. I wash once a week. I saturate my hair in the shower almost everday and apply the products. Works for me. Great info! I appreciate your directness, too much confusion/"experts" out there.

Me, me, ME! 🙋🏾♀️ I sure don’t. I just want to know how to care for my hair. I had no clue what to do with my hair when I had my locs cut in 2016. I had grown them since 1998. It’s taken me 6 years to even find a brand that I feel is giving what I needed it to give. I do not do wash n gos. I keep my hair braided at night and I wear it out during the day (except for when I don’t have to leave the house). I keep my hair routine very simple.

I think some are thinking of sealing hair with oil like you seal a piece of wood with lint seed oil. It works that way for wood but not hair. Thanks for clarifying this ❤️ very thorough

I just mentioned to another vlogger about pre pooing with grease to protect my hair strands, at timeswhen I feel like it, and she said oh, your hair is not going to be able to receive the moisture it needs when you wet it...🤔I mean, I respect her, but I am going to do what my hair likes 👍🏾 👌🏿 😉
Its funny how I have said things in this regard for years. How so many things people have suggested didn't work for me. And I had people literally tell me that something was wrong with me for saying it. I stood ten toes down and I meant that. Thanks Narada for telling people to stop the bs and get back to the basics.

It sounds like you are trying to comprehend a concept that you aren't ready for. You need to establish understanding of fundamental hair care concepts, then you supplement and build off of that with videos like this.
I use the same thing on my hair as I do for my body. A half pound of 100% shea butter,a half pound of 100% cocoa butter four to five ounces of 100% real vitamin E oil. This makes about five containers. My hair has always been ridiculously thick whether straightened,permed or natural. I became ill so to make things easier, I wash once a week and wear my hair in two braids. I wet my hair everyday in the shower just to feel fresh . Nothing special at all. I've been through cancer and I now have other health issues. I've never worn weaves or wigs and when I want to be, as my grandson used to say, foxy, I undo my braids and spritz with water mixed with conditioner. It's not that deep. 😊😊😊

Who in the world thought that ‘sealing’ means that your hair cant be remoisturized or hydrated?? Sealing is just supposed to mean slowing down the escape of the water. But we are not going to call them Slowers?? I mean, isnt that why we apply leave-ins with humectants?? So that we can draw in moisture. This is some serious overthinking. I would have thought that the simple fact that the hair can get wet DESTROYS that theory. Sheesh! You hear something new everyday.

It's the same concept except for y'all it should be easier. Just like it's harder for your hair to dry because of the clustered, confined state of the strands, that makes it easier for your hair to retain moisture. The same rules apply for locs. I've always used hair grease during my retwists and only needed water afterwards to remoisturize. The grease was always enough for my hair. With locs you just want to keep it light. I recommend starting off with just water and some oil for your locs

Nope, sure don’t. You’re so right I know from experience. I use grapeseed oil and my other fave is almond oil. They do NOT seal in any moisture at all. My grapeseed oil gives my natural twists a nice shine and my almond oil softens my hair. But my bergamot hair grease, that has petrolatum, seals in my moisture for daaays, almost two weeks actually. I love my hair grease, and so does my hair. And she likes her preferred oils too LOL.
Great video! I agree people should find out what works best for their hair. It is good to get suggestions and opinions but at the end of the day people should hop off the trends and stick to what works for them. Like you said everyone's natural hair is different.

Excellent video! When this oil and no butter trend started thats when this info started circulating. I actually no longer use oils and butters but I have always known what Narada is saying to be true. My "4c " has been flourishing just wearing it with leave in only or 1 (one) light styler.
I have 4c hair as well. And even with applying oil as the last step in my DAILY moisturizing routine, my hair is still dried out by the end of the day. I am going to experiment with not using any oils at all and see what happens.
Most moisturizing products have some oils in them anyway, so maybe the extra "sealing" with a separate oil isn't even needed. 🤔

You speak the truth...in so many ways. Some of these things people are doing on RUclips in the natural community is scary and hilarious. The DIY I see on some channels Yikes!!! are more harmful than helpful. Some of the hair care products on the market that OVER charges for shampoo, conditioners..etc... is all about marketing and label appeal. You have find the products that works for YOUR HAIR. Not the latest trend.
I almost fell for that years ago with the Shea butter sealing in moisture. But for me all I found out was I am allergic to Shea butter and my hair started falling out. Thats when I started becoming an ingredients junkie lol. And got into cosmetic chemistry..

Thanks for this video. Some people think just because their hair kinda looks like someone else's per ( the hair typing system), that the same things can be used to get the same results. One size does not fit all is so true. And thanks for giving further understanding on moisture of the hair. And also how not to correlate the softness and texture change that you get with heavy handed product applications with hydration levels. I still do not really know when my hair is dry. I just wet it and let the water sit and allow the hair to absorb the water, like you advise. I then apply oil and I do this ever other day. So I think it is working well. You have provide great education on hair and it clear our hair is not difficult or complicated at all just misunderstood. Nothing to do with what you said, but you’re about 4 months out from 1k videos. Edit: just finished, it makes a lot of sense. Many people do the same with mental health and even myself being a professional that has gone through school and studied, you still need the practice behind it to really understand what certain concepts mean. But people like to self-diagnose and label and even many professionals that have been through school don’t know what they’re doing. It makes sense that the same is being done in the hair industry and people think it’s so simple when it isn’t.

I love this video! It makes a lot of sense when compared to skin as you did. I always viewed my loc routine as just making my hair softer that’s it.
God told us to use herbs & oils in our hair so I refuse to believe it's not good for us. & As you said everyone is different I love your take on this😊
I alternate this and the gel from soap aloe (aloe maculata) for my weekly wash . My hair feels noticeably thicker and has more volume. It takes a bit of getting used to no foam but believe me this is worth it. Every month I use a normal shampoo which I dilute with water and a little cheap conditioner. So about 20% shampoo and I eyeball the water and conditioner. Its a good way to use up those shampoos that don't quite work but you have to use up cos it was expensive. Remember the foam isn't what cleanses your hair. We seem to be under the mistaken impression that we need suds or foam to cleanse our hair.

Finally someone telling the truth ! I think people felt the need of putting oils on their hair after applying a leave in because those products had a lack of "nutrition". It was like using a bottle of mainly water, with a very very amont of humectants and oils in it. And because they didn't want us to understand that, they created the concept of "sealing".
Cases in point:
2012 (The Desert, USA) - hair was fried by 12pm; trichologist said “wash and gos are a no no”
2016 (Hard Water, USA) - LOC works for me; jojoba, Joico Moisture Recovery, Shea Moisture styling milk; no heat for a year; most retention of my life
2020 (Better Water, USA) - last flat ironed hair cut; some product junkie fun times; found best spray bottle; too many hair videos
Present: tried Ayurveda; hair changes/likes heavier creams; basics are real: water, trims, leave in, silk scarves; time, energy, peace > hair
(Can’t speak for anyone else but) I’ve never heard black girl curls say wash every 4-7 days. I just know there are people who state how often they redo their wash n go when it’s ‘done’. And done is different for everyone. So I think that contributes to those numbers because people are seeing a pattern.
Personally, I’ve told people I wash every 4-5 days INSTEAD of remoisturizing. And I do that simply because it’s less of a hassle *for me* to just wash and reset my hair (wash n go), then to part, apply product, and finesse my hair into another style, even if it’s just a puff (which actually gives me more tangles). For all that time and effort, I might as well just wash it 🤷🏾♀️😂. That’s my life though.
Someone else may not mind the remoisture process (whatever that includes for you) because it’s simpler and easier than washing and styling it. That’s their life.

We've been conditioned to dread washing our hair. And with some of these wash day routines, I can see why. Now that I've learned a simpler way, I actually look forward to washing my hair. Because of my exercise routine, I do wash my hair every 4 days

I think sometimes we're addicted to the idea of there being a secret potion to everything or a Konami cheat code to accomplishing good things, when it's really just about simplicity, consistency and finding the right method for you.
I think this is what's causing a lot of these companies to take advantage of their consumers (including me), charging people 100s of dollars for what a dime store hair grease and water can do even more effectively with time and patience.
And also there’s shampoos and gels that have oil in them so liiike!!

The hair réversion example..... Says it all. For low porosity or high porosity.... Main take away is hydrate and moisturize and nothing is sealed. After being told I was basically completely ignorant online by a no oil no hair dresser it's good to get some good information.
