      They made a handful but IIRC and some customers cancelled orders so the final numbers were much lower than planned.

    This gives us an idea of progress over the last 7 years. 2.0l turbo hatchbacks now produce 400bhp. And sprint to 60 in less than 4 seconds.

    • @gavinwyllie7855
      @gavinwyllie7855 3 года назад +1

      But this is a third of the weight of the average hatchback. Also 2 litre engines have produced over 400hp for well over the last 10 years.

      you're missing the fact that weight on a car is the single biggest factor affecting performance

      This would be tens of seconds faster around a lap though. Racing cars are built to lap tracks quickly, which needs braking and cornering.

    Buy a 320R save some money and drive to the track. You won't have the downforce but you will have the fun of hanging the back end out and the same acceleration. What do I know? My Caterham only had 135BPH but that was the second most fun you could have with your clothes on and a third of the money.

    What is the lap difference between this and an Atom though?

    • @RobManser77
      @RobManser77 3 года назад +3

      I’m almost certain it’d be much, much, much faster. Lower CofG, 450kg of downforce, presumably running on slicks; it would be single seater or Radical fast.

    • @BuzzaB77
      @BuzzaB77 3 года назад

      @@RobManser77 well I'd expect it to be quicker yes, but I wanna know how much.
      "radical fast" isn't much of a statement though, Atom's normally beat those.

    • @RobManser77
      @RobManser77 3 года назад

      @@BuzzaB77 I suppose if you pick a road legal Radical at a high ride height and compare it with a very quick Atom like the 500 V8 then yes, the Atom might be a bit quicker (as it was at the ring I think). I was referring to a normal/typical SR3, SR8 etc on slicks down at proper racing ride height, which is obviously in a different league to a normal/typical Atom like the 3.5R. Evo got the 3.5R at 1:12 around Anglesey, and that's quite a lot slower than a racing Radical or single seater (F3 Cup is 1:02, Monoposto at 40mm ride height is 1:04, etc).
      Anyway, back to your question. Autocar said this Caterham was "three to four seconds a lap quicker than a BTCC car around Brands", which is pretty quick (www.autocar.co.uk/car-review/caterham/sp300r). The BTCC lap record is 48s around Brands Indy, so that would mean the Caterham 300R would be about 44-45s, which, exactly as I said, is down in quick single seater (e.g. FR/F3) territory. I've found some Atom Cup qualifying times in the dry and the pole lap was a 51.659 (www.tsl-timing.com/file/?f=MSVR/2013/132351ato.pdf). So to answer your question, that's about 7-8 seconds faster for every minute. Edited to add: If it’s the GP circuit it’s obviously a bit less.

    • @gam88a
      @gam88a 3 года назад

      @@RobManser77 I’d think one of the only road legal cars that would be close to the SP300R would be a BAC Mono performance wise.

      @@gam88a No downforce and road tyres though, along with a road ride height. Each of those factors is 1-3 seconds a lap.

      yeah but slower around a corner by a significant margin, sure top speed and 0-60 is one thing but its all about minimum corner speed with prototypes, I work with cars similar to this and they'll go flat out around corners that road cars need to brake pretty heavy for.
