In 2013, James Calado and Daniel Abt raced for them. Calado ended up P3 while Abt was literally P22. Abt finished 2nd in GP3 the previous year and went on to become a Formula E race winner. Although, this could be down to driving ability idk.
Abt isn't a bad driver, but being "just" a race winner despite driving in an Abt-Audi car tells that he wasn't far from the best driver in the competitive FE field. Well, he might've been better than P22 though,
I personally don’t rate abt, but he was better than 22nd They did also race together last year and tbh their results were pretty similar. And while you could argue about abts extra experience in the series, that really only works for the first 4 races when they were in somewhat similar cars in Panasonic and Audi (finished 7th 8th in constructors with only 2 points separating them). It doesn’t work for the other 4 races where abt was in a nio, a team that finished 81 points behind Calado’s Panasonic and a team that hasn’t scored a point all season and only 7 the year prior. Not saying this to say abt is better but it’s more evidence they were more closely matched than 3-22
He talked about this season in a video but rather said he has lost all his confidence because of the macau incident and just wasn’t the same anymore. But eventhough he didn’t mention it, maybe the missing support was also a reason. It would be interesting to hear from him
If Pourchaire does get screwed over though, at least he’s a rookie. He can switch teams for 2022 and fight for the championship. I’m worried about him getting screwed over this year, but I think he’ll be fine in the long run.
I think they prioritise 1 driver and essentially accept they aren’t going to be teams champions because it looks very good for them that a number of F1 drivers and GP2/F2 champions have driven for their team and they see that as more important than a teams championship
Yeah i'm almost certain that ART are prioritising the better driver and leaving the slightly less competitive to barely be able to score points while their teammate gets multiple podiums and wins
I wouldn't wanna see either Lundgaard or Pourchaire get screwed over though, since both of them are hugely talented. Both of them have title contender potential.
Great video! Seems like Lundgaard is their next victim, his current results are disheartening. Actually, in one of Mazepin's russian interviews he said some interesting things about his 2019 season basically confirming everything you've said.
I really like the f2 and f3 content, there's a lot of f1 content creators and I love seeing other peoples takes on the feeder series, so thanks for these!!
@@DylanJamesGP Exactly, same goes for me. I look up F2 classifications for each season every now and then and I just recently noticed this phenomenon after looking up Mazepin's performances for ART in 2019. Now, I have a different perspective on this shady, but competitive team. Nevertheless, good video and you have done yourself a new sub!
Bit weird to have a favourite team in Junior Series', but ART have been my favourite team since 2017; I'm really happy that someone made a video on this bc I can't remember a feeder series team that consistently has such a huge gap between drivers (when there really shouldn't be one) over multiple years. Hope Pourchaire and Lundgaard break that this year tho! (If not than ART just need to stop signing GP3/F3 runners up)
The curse is more functional when one of the two drivers comes from a GP3 runner-up. Abt (GP3 2012) 2nd Albon (GP3 2016) 2nd Aitken (GP3 2017) 2nd Mazepin (GP3 2018): 2nd Armstrong (F3 2019) 2nd But so far, Pourchaire has been a rare case where the curse doesn't work. Maybe because he's a Sauber Jr (Vasseur). Gutiérrez failed even though he was GP3 champion in 2010 so this is confusing
I think atleast with Aitken, the drop in pace made sense. I love Aitken as much as the next guy, but he's always taken time to get used to the machinery. In his 2nd season of GP3 during the 2017 season, he was teammates with George at ART and came 2nd. However, still thoroughly beaten by George. It makes sense that he was beaten in 2018. Better teammate, high pressure, rookie season etc. Personally don't think it's a curse.
Seriously, Lundgaard and Pourchaire are brilliant young drivers with lots of potential so I hope ART can finally prioritize both instead of leaving the slightly less faster driver on their own just because they are only a bit behind. If they actually dare to massacare one of them (especially if it's Pourchaire) then ART has blood on their hands, and will have a lot to answer for. Anyway, great video as usual Dylan, keep up the good content m8 👍
Fun fact: ART will be racing in GT this year under the name GPX Racing. They’ll be racing a Porsche a couple Porsche drivers in GTWC Europe (championship that has the 24 hours of Spa)
works really. They challenge for or win the drivers championship regularly which gives them kudos and means the top young talents want to get into a seat. Then it's pretty well known that this will happen so every year other teams know they are getting a high quality cast-off and the second driver gets a toughening up experience and knows they can point at the team for their poorer performance and will get a seat at another good team, so the cycle works.
I'll be honest with you Dylan I'm not a Hamilton fan I genuinely hate him but I'm really liking your content because it's interesting to watch plus it's funny too keep up the good work mate
You can argue 2013 as well. Calado was expected to win the championship but (according to rumour at least) ended up with a cracked chassis after a collision in one of the early rounds, still in the 2nd half of the year after he got a new chassis he was one, if not the highest point scorer eventually finishing third...and I know his team mate that year was a rookie but he's been fighting until the final round of the GP3 championship the previous season so for Abt to only score 11 points, over 140 points off Calado, who hadn't had the season he'd hoped for, is strange to say the least.

would marcus be considered as the second driver though? from what i recall, his T-cam is black (i'm not sure if F2 still follows that but probably not at this point)
Basically like the case of Latifi in 2018 - got ill before testing, missed half the time in the new spec car cause of the illness (which hospitalised him no less, for about a month I believe) and then was playing catch up ever since (hit him harder due to it being a new spec car). You could see the difference in him after the '18 season break, which is maybe also why '18 Albon looked so good (cause Nicky's season was doomed from the off). Looking at the points, before Baku (Albon's missed weekend) he was 11 points down on Nobu, and only 15 down after the weekend (Nobu only scored 4 points there), so if we apply art's favouritism principle he'd still have been the one to get screwed over, accident or no accident :/ 2nd season in f2 did help him a lot though, made the case to red bull to take him back (even if that was temporary)
