Tbh I just think there's too many f1 worthy drivers: Hulkenberg, Vandoorne, Albon and De Vries all deserve a seat, but there's just not enough space, especially with so many talented Junior drivers such as Illot as well. You could argue that they should replace the pay drivers, but I would rather see a pay driver in a car then one less team on the grid. I just hope that the budget cap will attract more teams and reduce the need for pay drivers in the future.

Stoffel Vandoorne is one of if not the best racer in the world when it comes to junior categories. Only in F1 he couldn't make his mark but that's because of McLaren & Alonso's bossy attitude. If McLaren had it's 2019 or 2020 car during the 2018 season, I'm sure Vandoorne would be at the top 10 of the drivers' championship. People that think he isn't that talented haven't seen it as the whole picture. I haven't met him but I have been at the world kart where he started and has been given that free kart and it's a pleasure to see al his wins on youtube. If he had the seat during the Sakhir GP, Vandoorne would've won and everyone agrees on that here in Belgium. I'm not sure if that would've influenced Perez joining Red Bull but it's a shame Vandoorne didn't got his chance. I'm a true fan of his talent!

He had to compete against Alonso who had the entire team built around him and then of course got every single upgrade a long long time before Stoffel ever got to see those upgrades. Even Zak Brown himself said they weren't able to give him the car to compete and still got rid of him to bring Norris in. It's unfortunate that not enough fans pay attention to the various feeder series to F1. That being said, history has shown that there are drivers who squander their great potential. Take Jan Magnussen for example, Kevin's father. He dominated the British F3 championship in 1994 to such an extent, breaking a single season wins record that had previously been held by the late Ayrton Senna in the process, that Jackie Stewart talked about him being "the next Senna." However, after a single race with McLaren in 1995, substituting for an unwell Mika Hakkinen, his season and a half with Stewart Grand Prix, ironically run by that same Jackie Stewart and his son Paul, in 1997/98 were underwhelming (he was off the pace compared to his team mate, Rubens Barrichello) and lead to him being dropped after the 1998 Canadian Grand Prix (in which he scored his only points finish, sixth). Given the hype about him before F1, he's rightly considered an F1 bust

Out of those, I think that George Russel has the most potential, he's so mature already. Guys like Charles have a lot of raw pace but he makes stupid mistakes that take him out of the race fairly often.

I knew Sainz is a good F1 driver. The Carlos-Lando duo was working very well. But I was furious and still am very angry McLaren signed Sainz. If they wanted to replace Vandoorne they should've contracted a proven top class F1 driver like they did this year with Ricciardo. But taking Sainz over your own world class driver was just insane.

That's what happen when the 2nd gets to be the developer driver for the 1st driver.... new wing? sure, stoffel can drive it in practise to see if it works, and when it works, we give it to Alonso... Ha can't complain or else we will deny him a contract... Reminds me of Thierry Boutsen at Williams in 1989...

We’ll never know what went on behind the closed doors at McLaren, but I do remember Alonso saying about Vandoorne that he came closer to him than any teammate before. They also seemed to get along well personally. But clear is that chief and marketeer Zak Brown was a big Alonso fan, and ditched the dented Vandoorne image for the fresh UK star Norris. Only the dents in Vandoornes image were caused by serving him McLarens worst race car in decades. Only 2y after, Seidl gave credit to both Alonso and Vandoorne for their development work that eventually proved successful the year after. Oh btw, you forgot Vandoornes podium in Le Mans in his first attempt. I hope we see more of his undeniable talent in other races.

I thought he generally gave a decent account of himself in 2017 (certainly the second half of not so much the first few races), his drives in Singapore and Malaysia stand out (Malaysia in particular where he beat Alonso on merit), and his start in Mexico (and despite how bad the car was it's actually one of my favourite McLaren F1 cars!), but his 2018 was generally terrible, and I'm pretty sure that there were politics at play that year which didn't help. I do wonder how he might have fared in the MCL34 and MCL35 though. I've enjoyed seeing him do well in Formula E, and though he hasn't had the best start to this season I think he will be a championship contender if the Mercedes continues to be one of the cars to beat.
