    One of my favorite things watching these speedruns is how Danya punishes players for blitzing moves. For my own games this kind of behavior from opponents tends to have a tilting effect and ultimately induce mistakes on my own part.

      Yeah i really hate when my opponent blitzes out a bad opening and i cant fully punish it. With these videos i'm getting better at it but it's always annoying to lose to these kinds of players

      I try to remind myself to play the board, not the player when facing blitzers.

      Happens to me too - I guess I get nervous and try to blitz back, instead of taking the appropriate time for each move and punishing the blitzer.

      GM's have a knack of making things look easy. After he explains every move, or at least draws attention to a position, it's relatively easy to see the move but to see it in real-time...that's why he is gm.

    Very instructive game. The opponent blitzed out the opening prep without thinking, then went fishing, and rounded it all up by trying to make some moves where he felt safe without realizing the danger :D
    Those knight sac ideas are very thematic for attacks on a king behind a fianchetto, so a very versatile game far as what we can learn from it (from the brutal attack that actually unfolded, to all the alternatives Danya went over).

    Have been hippo player for a long time. My general tip is to not castle before opponent starts an attack. Try to get one of knights to outposts somewhere on the b3 (after pawn push) or g3. Do not try to break the center with d4 or e4, use flank pawns later. If they push h6 or a6, push a3 or h3 to close down the edge - you don't want their pawn supported by the rook to attack your bishop. Never push f3 or b3 - you close your bishop's view. Better push f4 or c4 (on side of the board where your opponent is weaker). If the center is closed, do not push from side where opponent has pawn on 4th rank - you attack nothing and they can use en passant rule to crack your position open. If you see 2 knights on 1 side of the board as Danya showed, annoyingly offer ton of knight trades (from video example, knight e2 to f4 is the way, also it activates the queen which can be helpful). If someone has trouble with particular setup ask in comments, will try to help

    The Hippo is pretty common here at my elo range (1200 - 1400) and their game plan always revolves around playing on lightning fast pace so their opponent is kinda forced to play as fast as them or you're gonna lose on time and panic. I am glad there are ways to refute this kind of playstyle by attacking their king with the h pawn!

    C3 was played far too early here for a good hippopotamus setup. C5 would destroy black’s pawn chain - a standard hippopotamus attack. It would vaporize after f2 and the Bishop’s mighty backing - in a decent hippo setup the knight would be on d7 to kick ass also!

    • @anton5646
      @anton5646 2 года назад

      Yeah I mean everyone is allowed to play how they want but the opponent could easily improve his play if he actually played a proper opening and spent a bit more time instead of blitzing out every move. Once he was already losing he found some nice tactical moves and defences but at that point it was a bit too late.

    Around 16:50 I had an idea that I really wished worked, instead of f5, going b6. The idea being on your next turn going f5, d5, Bd5, Qd5, Bc5+... only problem is Rc5. Such a shame, my one problem with chess, in a real game both players are working against creating art. I wish there was a version that incentivized it, although I cannot imagine what it'd be.

  • @davidoconnor1773

    The opponent might have played well in the midgame, but he blundered the opening. He moved his center pawns up unnecessarily/prematurely, instead of getting the hippo properly setup. He would of course probably still lose to Danya, but he could have prevented a lot of the attack vectors.

    I saw the move bishop b8 to defend the d5 pawn much more natural, instead of bishop e6. Danya didn´t even talk about that move, is there a reason why it is objectively worse? Or any rule of thumb that made him not even consider it. It made the light square bishop much less overcharged and I didn´t see any problem with the activity of the bishops, nor a way for white to exploit that fact. Also white couldn´t have played Nxd5 and you could set up a battery in the future.

  • @NAVEENMV7

    • @aaronstephen3058
      @aaronstephen3058 2 года назад +1

      Yeah, but the Bishop is also a strong attacker and you don’t want to give it away. You lose all your initiative after Bxg3 hxg3 Qxd5 Rc5, forcing the Queen back, and your advantage is gone. Danya’s Nxh2 is better (though I prefer the simple f5 in that position).
