@@RickDesper-v8z well yes, Harry from Home alone was brilliantly entertaining and convincingly terrifying in this movie. I meant that Ray basically had a tough job carrying a movie with that heavyweight talent, but its his movie; hes in practically every frame and he narrates it. Its no mean feat that he wasnt completely overshadowed by the other performers, he held his own.
Jim Carrey not only deserved a nomination, but probably a WIN for the Truman Show. An outstanding performance that elevates the movie to one of my personal favorites of all time
"The birdcage" is probably the most underrated movie ever. Not just Nathan is incredible, but the rest of the cast! Not to mention the script, cinematography, music, everything!!!
I think that comedies are seen as second class, so they are not taken seriously. Acting in a comedy can be extremely hard when you have to be believable in a comedic situation.
The original French movie and the French play are so much better. The humour in France is more satirical and relentless than American humour and not endearing at all. In American movies, people change and turn nice. In French movies, people never change, but often modify their point of view.
@@MrAnchor26 Right?! Like this wasn't just one of the worst snubs of the 90's, it was also one of the greatest snubs OF ALL TIME! Val was also snubbed for his similarly brilliant performance as Jim Morrison in "The Doors," (possibly the best bio-pic I've ever seen). Val was apparently hard to work with and was pretty much black-listed from the early 2000's on, and yet he's easily one of the most under-appreciated/rated actors in history. Between those 2 masterpieces, he was also great in "Heat," "The Ghost and The Darkness," "Alexander," "Thunderheart," and "Kiss-Kiss, Bang-Bang." He deserved/deserves WAY more recognition for being such an amazing actor!
Thank you for mentioning Pam Grier in Jackie Brown, that last scene gets me too. Patrick Swayze should had got nominated for best actor for To Wong Foo. Jim Carey in The Truman Show is absolutely brilliant
To Wong Fu followed on from the much better The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. Which was only nominated for Best Costume at the 1995 Academy Awards (which it won). Terrence Stamp should have been nominated for Best Actor, Stephen Elliot for Best Director, and Priscilla should have been nominated for Best Film. Or at least funniest, most transgressive, or something similar.
The biggest Oscar snub for me of all time is Ellen Burstyn in " Requiem for a Dream". I know she was nominated and this list is a little different, but seriously. Anybody who knows that performance knows she deserved the Oscar.

Well like the Hall Of Fame, the Oscars should be the best of the best, not very good. You can't nominate everyone. And some actresses who have earned substantial praise over time get nominated for less-than-stellar work at times too. One snub that I'll never get over is the outstanding performance by Robert Shaw in JAWS.

Maybe not Oscars worthy but Donald Pleasance really did do a lot to elevate John Carpenter’s Halloween and he is goddamn awesome in that film. Also Jack Nicholson in The Shining may seem like typical Jack but he is terrifying in that movie.
Great list. I, then and now, have never understood the acting wins for "As Good As It Gets" and am also baffled by DiCaprio and Grier being left out. Really?? I found it to be a phenomenal movie. Specifically, Helen Hunt was so incredible imo. She turned in such a nuanced and organic performance. But, hey we all have different tastes.

@@gianpertusi1375 I TOTALLY understand how this movie is a hit and miss type of film. You either love it or are indifferent to it lol. And it makes sense to me because it is such a "different" kind of movie. It really has an odd energy to it, but I still adore Hunts performance. She takes, what I imagine to be, a really flat role on paper and morphs it into something very human and real. When I watch that movie, she steals every scene imo and the film wouldn't work at all if it hadn't been for her. She glues all the weirdness together. Maybe weirdness isn't the right word...it's just a very aloof movie. It seems to drift and be a little unmotivated or disconnected. But that is why I feel her performance is so good, because she is able to pull it all together somehow. So, in the end, the film isn't all that remarkable--its enjoyable, but not remarkable. However, Helen Hunt was pretty awesome.
This is a great List - especially Michele Pfeiffer in Batman Returns, Nathan Lane in the Birdcage. Those are excellent performances that deserved nominations. Also, so glad you mentioned Streep in Death Becomes her - i feel that performance is overlooked but it is so good and wickedly funny. I was surprised to not to see River Phoenix from My Own Private Idaho - he is amazing in that and should have gotten a nod.
If Dustin Hoffman could swing a nomination for Tootsie the Williams should have gotten one for Doubtfire. Love both films but Doubtfire was a masterpiece (also I would have loved Sally Field to have gotten a nomination for supporting)
I agree about Dustin Hoffman. His performance in Tootsie is one of the best comedic performances in movies. I love Robin Williams in Mrs. Doubtfire as well. I also do agree that Dustin Hoffman should have won the Oscar for Tootsie as much as I enjoy Ben Kingsley’s performance in Gandhi. I think Ben Kingsley is worthy of an Oscar win in Gandhi if it’s released a different year.
Tootsie was sold as a more serious movie - a statement about feminism in general as opposed to just a guy in drag. Personally, my favorite scene in Tootsie is Bill Murray rambling on at the party while his crowd of onlookers gradually drifts away.
Linda Hamilton is easily one of the biggest Oscar snubs for her role in Terminator 2. She sold her character transformation and sold her struggle for her humanity! I can't believe that she's not discussed at all for such a landmark performance that created dozens of imitators and parodies!
You are spot on with a lot of these. Pfeiffer's Catwoman was the female performance of that year and the consolation nomination was the underwhelming Love Field doesn't cut it. Williams was perfection as Mrs. Doubtfire (seriously try to imagine someone else in that role and you can't), so his snub is inexcusable. Plus I hate that Oscar voters ignore performers who hit their heights in comedy until they do a drama and then they throw an award at them for the "stretch". As if doing comedy is easy! Lane stole The Birdcage and it was a huge hit both critical and at the box office, so no idea what they were thinking there. The fact that Gooding (who has proven to be a one trick pony) won and Lane didn't get a nomination says it all. I don't think there is anything to add to your views on Jamie Lee Curtis - well said. And yes - Nicholson's overrated performance (and Hoffman's as well for that year) could have been left off. DiCaprio was amazing and a revelation to a lot of people in Titanic. He beautifully played a larger than life character (very difficult) and the film rested on his performance. By contrast, Nicholson gave the same performance he had been giving in nearly every film for the last decade and did anyone really believe the Nicholson/Hunt relationship in that film? And yes - Nicholson rocked About Schmidt - a far better performance.

For me it's Kathy Bates and Jennifer Jason Leigh in Dolores Claiborne, as Lead and Supporting Actress respectively. Excellent movie with wonderful performances, both of them are heartbreaking in their roles and definitely should have been nominated.

I find it hard to believe that Anthony Hopkins in "The Remains of the Day" is the one you'd take out . I think he deserved to win, and it was a pretty strong year. Neeson, Day-Lewis, and Fishburne were outstanding as well. Hanks deserved the Oscar he won for Forrest Gump the following year but the win for Philadelphia was more about honoring the character he played (and the fact that Hopkins and Day-Lewis were both recent winners).
Hopkins Should have won, agreed sooo much but Oscar's hardly look at simple on the surface characters. It is soooo hard to play a, one would say, boring character on the surface that completely engrosses a smart movie goer, IMHO.
Agreed. Hopkins is better in Remains of the Day than he is in Silence of the Lambs, if that can be believed. It's much harder to play a character with realistic personality traits than to simply go over the top as a villain. The subtleties of Remains of the Day are remarkable. And Stevens is such a maddening character. So close to "getting it," but he shies away from the possibilities that are available.
Poor Fishburn. If he hasn't gotten an Oscar by now odds are he'll never get it. Everything he's done deserves accolades and I overlook his appearance in The Matrix just 'cos ...
Angela Bassett for "Waiting to Exhale" should've been nominated for leading actress, Steve Buchemi for supporting actor in Fargo, and Molly Ringwood for Pretty in Pink for leading actress.
I think the recent win for Jamie Lee Curtis was, more or less, one of those "we're sorry it's taken so long...here's your award for everything that we should've acknowledged along the way".
I love your presentation and defense of your choices. You make a great argument for all especially Barrymore, Williams, Pheiffer, Witherspoon, and Lane! The Academy has a long history of snobbery toward comedic and horror performances. I'd go farther with Reese Witherspoon and say another nomination for "Legally Blonde" as well in 2001!
Pam Grier was robbed! I was only 6 when that movie came out but watching all those years later it angers me that they snubbed Pam Grier from Jackie Brown one of the best performances tarantino directed in my opinion. Ps so glad you gave the 10 spot to Drew Barrymore - I feel as that movie and performances goes on with age, it deserved a nomination.
Back then the voters were studiously ignoring Tarantino's work as much as possible. Forster got the nod for "supporting actor," which raises the question of "who was he supporting"? And I agree that Grier should have at least gotten a nomination. I don't understand the love for "As Good as it Gets," and it isn't withstanding scrutiny as time passes. My favorite performance of that year was HBC in "The Wings of the Dove," but that's very much crush-related.

Your reasoning for Drew Barrymore in Scream is why I think Alicia Silverstone in Clueless would have been an interesting nomination as well. An iconic performance that she committed to 100% and actually won Funniest Actress at the American Comedy Awards & Breakthrough Performance at the National Board Of Review, plus that movie at the very least deserved a Screenplay nom (WGA nom, & win at National Society Of Film Critics). Madonna in Evita, J.Lo in Selena, and Val Kilmer in The Doors would have been good biopic performance noms. I totally agree with Pam Grier's performance, she is dynamite and a big part of the reason as to why Jackie Brown holds up so well, same with Nathan Lane in The Birdcage. I'd have given Robin Williams a nod in The Birdcage as well as Mrs. Doubtfire, the latter one of his comedic peaks in acting and the former a great mixture of drama and comedy much like in The Fisher King. Jim Carrey was amazing in The Truman Show and I was surprised that even SAG didn't recognize him there. Another excellent video as per usual. ❤
Alicia Silverstone definitely deserved a nomination - she doesnt strike a single false note (despite the plastic nature of the setting) and she is hilarious without overplaying the jokes. And her performance has really stood the test of time.
Ray Liotta had actually come close to an Oscar nomination in 1987 for Something wild. He got Golden Globe, Boston, New York, National Society critics nominations for it.

Without a doubt, the ultimate snub was John Candy, for planes, trains and automobiles. An incredible comedic and dramatic turn. I think part of the problem was, he was a lead? But there were two leads? Not really sure, but, nobody else could’ve played that role. The scene of Steve Martin berating him in the hotel room is one of my fondest film memories. I was 10 years old when I saw that in the theaters, and I started to well up. I would have nominated him over Jack Nicholson in Ironweed. Probably would not have beaten out Michael Douglas for Wall Street, but, it would have been wonderful to see the nomination.

Very seldom does a comedy make me laugh out loud. You know what I mean. You smile, softly giggle, but guffawing…no. I laughed so much during Mrs Doubtfire, I went back to the theatre two more times to hear what I missed due to just lol. Robin Williams was amazing. Any time I’m feeling a bit low, that’s my go to movie. I gave up on the Oscars when Best Picture went to Chariots of Fire beating Raiders of the Lost Ark. Love your channel. I've had a theory for a while that DiCaprio was snubbed for Titanic because of this ingrained snobbery about celebrity persona- Leomania was so nuts that I can see Academy members looking at all the Tiger Beat covers that year and not being able to mentally square that with an Oscar nomination. Plus, he already had a reputation for partying and I wonder if that played into it too. I'm also glad to hear that I'm not the only one who is mystified at As Good as It Gets being so lauded. I would have LOVED to see Courtney Love on an Oscar campaign. That would have been something to see. Hot take: Carrey should have also been nominated for Liar Liar I would include Val Kilmer in Tombstone, River Phoenix in My Own Private Idaho, Kirsten Dunst in Interview with the Vampire, and Sandra Bullock in While You Were Sleeping. Kilmer definitely was crowded out in 1993, as the Supporting Actor category that year was ridiculously packed, but I would have substituted him for either Postlethwaite or Malkovich that year. (Also, I would have loved seeing two of the most quotable, delightful film performances of all time go head to head: Doc Holliday and Samuel Gerard). For Phoenix, I would have swapped out Nolte (personally, as much as I love Streisand, The Prince of Tides never really grabbed me but I seem to be in the minority in this). For Dunst, I would have swapped out one of the Bullets Over Broadway performances. For Bullock... oh hell, I just saw the list for Best Actress that year... damn.....maybe swap out Sarandon? That's a tough one. But that movie at any rate should have been more lauded, the screenplay especially. Also, two of the best "face-acting" performances I've seen were in the 90s- Jodhi May in Last of the Mohicans (she was barely in the movie but my god, those facial expressions in her last scene...) and Alan Rickman in Sense and Sensibility. Just a thought and I don't know if this topic is on your radar- why isn't there an Oscar category for Best Voice Acting? I know motion-capture acting has been in the conversation thanks to Andy Serkis, but man, the list of voice acting that deserved Oscars, wow.
Hey Brian, what do you think about Madonna's "Evita"? To this day I still believe she should've been nominated for it. We all know she is not the best actress out there, but she has some gems here and there like "Desperately Seeking Susan", "A league if their own", "Dangerous game" and she was brilliant in "Evita" and I think she deserved a nomination at the Oscars.

Man! Thank you for your amazing channel and videos. We have almost identical taste in many aspects. Here i completely concur for Meryl Streep for Death Becomes Her. Just brilliant. And me too watched it thousand times. This film as well was snubbed big time. Yes got an Oscar for visual effects well deserved. But i would nominate for screenplay as well as director.
I remember seeing Boogie Nights for the first time and being blow away by Mark Wahlberg’s Performance. I think his Marky Mark days hurt his chances at a Oscar nom for that performance because it was in academy voters recent memory but I’ve always looked at that as his real arrival in Hollywood.
I love everything about The Birdcage, especially Nathani Lane's acting/character. There's just something so cozy, intimate, and charming about the movie. Also, Michelle Pheifrer's scene when she's making the catsuit out of a raincoat from her closet is the best.
I have always said that Reese should have won or at least been nominated for Election (hell, maybe even Freeway), over Walk the Line. Felicity Huffman should have won that year, period.
It was nice to hear someone else not be such a fan of As Good as it Gets and I too would've replaced Nicholson's nomination with Leo's for Titanic - I always thought of Titanic as Jack's story in any case and it baffled me too when it seemed he was the only one missing from all the noms that Titanic got.
I completely agree with you on the nominations for AGAIG! I saw it many years later and even though Jack Nicholson is clearly an icon, I didn't understand the hype. I understood it even less for Helen Hunt 😬

Harvey Keitel and Tim Roth were freakin’ awesome in Reservoir Dogs. I think also Robert De Niro in Casino, Kevin Costner in JFK, and Ben Kingsley in Schindler’s List all deserved at least to be nominated.

I sort of dislike Reese Witherspoon as a person. For some reason I believe some of the bad I’ve heard (just a few things, that her nice girl image is phony and she’s a spoiled-rotten jerk, but I don’t know her so perhaps unfair). However, she was great in Election.

Jack Lemmon's "Best Actor" snub for "Glengarry Glen Ross" has never sat well with me. It was a gorgeous performance and a beautiful bookend to a fabulous career. Pacino got an understandable supporting nod for his flashy performance in that film and was double-nominated that year, winning for the woeful "Scent of a Woman" over the far more deserving Denzel in the outrageously under-nominated "Malcolm X" (both Delroy Lindo and Al Freeman Jr. could have easily received supporting nods for that one).
I looove that you make a decision everytime and left one of the nominees out for include another one. That always should do. Some are say often 2 or 3 performances in one year in One category, but have no idea to left another out. It's always easy to make a list of snubbed performances, but it's way more difficult to left others out. Often it was very competative and it's near impossible to left others out.
Wesley Snipes was also robbed with Too Wong Foo. His performance as Noxxy was so incredibly subtle but rang true. Important note: I have seen TWFTFEJN hundreds of times. That film should have had more attention at awards shows.

I meant that Ray basically had a tough job carrying a movie with that heavyweight talent, but its his movie; hes in practically every frame and he narrates it. I think that comedies are seen as second class, so they are not taken seriously. Acting in a comedy can be extremely hard when you have to be believable in a comedic situation.

The original French movie and the French play are so much better. The humour in France is more satirical and relentless than American humour and not endearing at all. In American movies, people change and turn nice. In French movies, people never change, but often modify their point of view.

Val was also snubbed for his similarly brilliant performance as Jim Morrison in "The Doors," (possibly the best bio-pic I've ever seen). Val was apparently hard to work with and was pretty much black-listed from the early 2000's on, and yet he's easily one of the most under-appreciated/rated actors in history. Between those 2 masterpieces, he was also great in "Heat," "The Ghost and The Darkness," "Alexander," "Thunderheart," and "Kiss-Kiss, Bang-Bang." He deserved/deserves WAY more recognition for being such an amazing actor!

To Wong Fu followed on from the much better The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. Which was only nominated for Best Costume at the 1995 Academy Awards (which it won). Terrence Stamp should have been nominated for Best Actor, Stephen Elliot for Best Director, and Priscilla should have been nominated for Best Film. Or at least funniest, most transgressive, or something similar.
The biggest Oscar snub for me of all time is Ellen Burstyn in " Requiem for a Dream". I know she was nominated and this list is a little different, but seriously. Anybody who knows that performance knows she deserved the Oscar.

Dustin Hoffman already executed this trope 1000 times better in Tootsie AND won the best actor award.
Looking back at the Oscars in the 90s, it's interesting to reflect on some notable snubs. One performance that immediately comes to mind is Drew Barrymore's captivating portrayal in 'Ever After.' @@gianpertusi1375 I TOTALLY understand how this movie is a hit and miss type of film. You either love it or are indifferent to it lol. And it makes sense to me because it is such a "different" kind of movie. It really has an odd energy to it, but I still adore Hunts performance. She takes, what I imagine to be, a really flat role on paper and morphs it into something very human and real. When I watch that movie, she steals every scene imo and the film wouldn't work at all if it hadn't been for her. She glues all the weirdness together. Maybe weirdness isn't the right word...it's just a very aloof movie. It seems to drift and be a little unmotivated or disconnected. But that is why I feel her performance is so good, because she is able to pull it all together somehow. So, in the end, the film isn't all that remarkable--its enjoyable, but not remarkable. However, Helen Hunt was pretty awesome.

If Dustin Hoffman could swing a nomination for Tootsie the Williams should have gotten one for Doubtfire. Love both films but Doubtfire was a masterpiece (also I would have loved Sally Field to have gotten a nomination for supporting)

I agree about Dustin Hoffman. His performance in Tootsie is one of the best comedic performances in movies. I love Robin Williams in Mrs. Doubtfire as well. I also do agree that Dustin Hoffman should have won the Oscar for Tootsie as much as I enjoy Ben Kingsley’s performance in Gandhi. I think Ben Kingsley is worthy of an Oscar win in Gandhi if it’s released a different year.
Tootsie was sold as a more serious movie - a statement about feminism in general as opposed to just a guy in drag. Personally, my favorite scene in Tootsie is Bill Murray rambling on at the party while his crowd of onlookers gradually drifts away.
Hoffman should’ve won for Tootsie. Tootsie and Doubtfire are very different films, wouldn’t really compare the performances.
Linda Hamilton is easily one of the biggest Oscar snubs for her role in Terminator 2. She sold her character transformation and sold her struggle for her humanity! I can't believe that she's not discussed at all for such a landmark performance that created dozens of imitators and parodies!

You are spot on with a lot of these. Pfeiffer's Catwoman was the female performance of that year and the consolation nomination was the underwhelming Love Field doesn't cut it. Williams was perfection as Mrs. Doubtfire (seriously try to imagine someone else in that role and you can't), so his snub is inexcusable. Plus I hate that Oscar voters ignore performers who hit their heights in comedy until they do a drama and then they throw an award at them for the "stretch". As if doing comedy is easy! Lane stole The Birdcage and it was a huge hit both critical and at the box office, so no idea what they were thinking there. The fact that Gooding (who has proven to be a one trick pony) won and Lane didn't get a nomination says it all. I don't think there is anything to add to your views on Jamie Lee Curtis - well said. And yes - Nicholson's overrated performance (and Hoffman's as well for that year) could have been left off. DiCaprio was amazing and a revelation to a lot of people in Titanic. He beautifully played a larger than life character (very difficult) and the film rested on his performance. By contrast, Nicholson gave the same performance he had been giving in nearly every film for the last decade and did anyone really believe the Nicholson/Hunt relationship in that film? And yes - Nicholson rocked About Schmidt - a far better performance.
Love your picks and I totally agree on no.1!!! Some other great performances of the 90s that got snubbed in my opinion are: River Phoenix in My Own Private Idaho, Ewan McGregor in Trainspotting, Nicole Kidman in To Die For, Kirsten Dunst in Interview with the Vampire, Johnny Depp in Ed Wood, Helena Bonham Carter in Fight Club, Daniel Day Lewis in The Crucible and Winona Ryder in Girl Interrupted.
Really good picks. I would add Robert Carlyle for Trainspotting and Pitt or Norton for Fight Club as well.

For me it's Kathy Bates and Jennifer Jason Leigh in Dolores Claiborne, as Lead and Supporting Actress respectively. Excellent movie with wonderful performances, both of them are heartbreaking in their roles and definitely should have been nominated.

I find it hard to believe that Anthony Hopkins in "The Remains of the Day" is the one you'd take out . I think he deserved to win, and it was a pretty strong year. Neeson, Day-Lewis, and Fishburne were outstanding as well. Hanks deserved the Oscar he won for Forrest Gump the following year but the win for Philadelphia was more about honoring the character he played (and the fact that Hopkins and Day-Lewis were both recent winners).
Hopkins Should have won, agreed sooo much but Oscar's hardly look at simple on the surface characters. It is soooo hard to play a, one would say, boring character on the surface that completely engrosses a smart movie goer, IMHO.
Agreed. Hopkins is better in Remains of the Day than he is in Silence of the Lambs, if that can be believed. It's much harder to play a character with realistic personality traits than to simply go over the top as a villain. The subtleties of Remains of the Day are remarkable. And Stevens is such a maddening character. So close to "getting it," but he shies away from the possibilities that are available.
Poor Fishburn. If he hasn't gotten an Oscar by now odds are he'll never get it. Everything he's done deserves accolades and I overlook his appearance in The Matrix just 'cos ...

The Academy has a long history of snobbery toward comedic and horror performances. I'd go farther with Reese Witherspoon and say another nomination for "Legally Blonde" as well in 2001!

Pam Grier was robbed! I was only 6 when that movie came out but watching all those years later it angers me that they snubbed Pam Grier from Jackie Brown one of the best performances tarantino directed in my opinion.

Back then the voters were studiously ignoring Tarantino's work as much as possible. Forster got the nod for "supporting actor," which raises the question of "who was he supporting"? And I agree that Grier should have at least gotten a nomination. I don't understand the love for "As Good as it Gets," and it isn't withstanding scrutiny as time passes. My favorite performance of that year was HBC in "The Wings of the Dove," but that's very much crush-related.

Excellent video. Love how you highlighted so many performances that got snubbed due to obvious genre or performer bias. Your reasoning for Drew Barrymore in Scream is why I think Alicia Silverstone in Clueless would have been an interesting nomination as well. An iconic performance that she committed to 100% and actually won Funniest Actress at the American Comedy Awards & Breakthrough Performance at the National Board Of Review, plus that movie at the very least deserved a Screenplay nom (WGA nom, & win at National Society Of Film Critics). Madonna in Evita, J.Lo in Selena, and Val Kilmer in The Doors would have been good biopic performance noms. I totally agree with Pam Grier's performance, she is dynamite and a big part of the reason as to why Jackie Brown holds up so well, same with Nathan Lane in The Birdcage. I'd have given Robin Williams a nod in The Birdcage as well as Mrs. Doubtfire, the latter one of his comedic peaks in acting and the former a great mixture of drama and comedy much like in The Fisher King. Jim Carrey was amazing in The Truman Show and I was surprised that even SAG didn't recognize him there. Another excellent video as per usual. ❤
Alicia Silverstone definitely deserved a nomination - she doesnt strike a single false note (despite the plastic nature of the setting) and she is hilarious without overplaying the jokes. And her performance has really stood the test of time.
Ray Liotta had actually come close to an Oscar nomination in 1987 for Something wild. He got Golden Globe, Boston, New York, National Society critics nominations for it.
He was sensational in "Something Wild." And Melanie Griifith deserved an Oscar for her remarkable performance in that wonderful movie.

Without a doubt, the ultimate snub was John Candy, for planes, trains and automobiles. An incredible comedic and dramatic turn. I think part of the problem was, he was a lead? But there were two leads? Not really sure, but, nobody else could’ve played that role.
The scene of Steve Martin berating him in the hotel room is one of my fondest film memories. I was 10 years old when I saw that in the theaters, and I started to well up.

Very seldom does a comedy make me laugh out loud. You know what I mean. You smile, softly giggle, but guffawing…no. I laughed so much during Mrs Doubtfire, I went back to the theatre two more times to hear what I missed due to just lol. Robin Williams was amazing. Any time I’m feeling a bit low, that’s my go to movie. I gave up on the Oscars when Best Picture went to Chariots of Fire beating Raiders of the Lost Ark. Love your channel. I've had a theory for a while that DiCaprio was snubbed for Titanic because of this ingrained snobbery about celebrity persona- Leomania was so nuts that I can see Academy members looking at all the Tiger Beat covers that year and not being able to mentally square that with an Oscar nomination. Plus, he already had a reputation for partying and I wonder if that played into it too.
I'm also glad to hear that I'm not the only one who is mystified at As Good as It Gets being so lauded.

I would include Val Kilmer in Tombstone, River Phoenix in My Own Private Idaho, Kirsten Dunst in Interview with the Vampire, and Sandra Bullock in While You Were Sleeping. Kilmer definitely was crowded out in 1993, as the Supporting Actor category that year was ridiculously packed, but I would have substituted him for either Postlethwaite or Malkovich that year. (Also, I would have loved seeing two of the most quotable, delightful film performances of all time go head to head: Doc Holliday and Samuel Gerard). For Phoenix, I would have swapped out Nolte (personally, as much as I love Streisand, The Prince of Tides never really grabbed me but I seem to be in the minority in this). For Dunst, I would have swapped out one of the Bullets Over Broadway performances. For Bullock... oh hell, I just saw the list for Best Actress that year... damn.....maybe swap out Sarandon? That's a tough one. But that movie at any rate should have been more lauded, the screenplay especially.
Also, two of the best "face-acting" performances I've seen were in the 90s- Jodhi May in Last of the Mohicans (she was barely in the movie but my god, those facial expressions in her last scene...) and Alan Rickman in Sense and Sensibility.
Just a thought and I don't know if this topic is on your radar- why isn't there an Oscar category for Best Voice Acting? I know motion-capture acting has been in the conversation thanks to Andy Serkis, but man, the list of voice acting that deserved Oscars, wow.

Hey Brian, what do you think about Madonna's "Evita"? To this day I still believe she should've been nominated for it. We all know she is not the best actress out there, but she has some gems here and there like "Desperately Seeking Susan", "A league if their own", "Dangerous game" and she was brilliant in "Evita" and I think she deserved a nomination at the Oscars.

I remember seeing Boogie Nights for the first time and being blow away by Mark Wahlberg’s Performance. I think his Marky Mark days hurt his chances at a Oscar nom for that performance because it was in academy voters recent memory but I’ve always looked at that as his real arrival in Hollywood.

I love everything about The Birdcage, especially Nathani Lane's acting/character. There's just something so cozy, intimate, and charming about the movie. Also, Michelle Pheifrer's scene when she's making the catsuit out of a raincoat from her closet is the best.

It was nice to hear someone else not be such a fan of As Good as it Gets and I too would've replaced Nicholson's nomination with Leo's for Titanic - I always thought of Titanic as Jack's story in any case and it baffled me too when it seemed he was the only one missing from all the noms that Titanic got.
No, _Titanic_ was about Rose's journey. It's all from her perspective. We don't even get much background info on Jack, who remains mysterious.

Harvey Keitel and Tim Roth were freakin’ awesome in Reservoir Dogs. I think also Robert De Niro in Casino, Kevin Costner in JFK, and Ben Kingsley in Schindler’s List all deserved at least to be nominated.

Jack Lemmon's "Best Actor" snub for "Glengarry Glen Ross" has never sat well with me. It was a gorgeous performance and a beautiful bookend to a fabulous career. Pacino got an understandable supporting nod for his flashy performance in that film and was double-nominated that year, winning for the woeful "Scent of a Woman" over the far more deserving Denzel in the outrageously under-nominated "Malcolm X" (both Delroy Lindo and Al Freeman Jr. could have easily received supporting nods for that one).
I looove that you make a decision everytime and left one of the nominees out for include another one. That always should do. Some are say often 2 or 3 performances in one year in One category, but have no idea to left another out. It's always easy to make a list of snubbed performances, but it's way more difficult to left others out. Often it was very competative and it's near impossible to left others out.
I would like a Honorable Mention for Ice Cube in Boys N the Hood. It was his debut and He knocked it out of the park as Doughboy... Very underrated.
