The karikalan chozhan which the movie talks about is legendary king of early chozha empire (600 B.C -300 C.E) the karikala chozha in ponniyin selvan is from mediaeval chozhas (848 C.E - 1070 C.E).. many chola kings have the legendary karikalan cholan name besides their name as tribute.
Karikalan chozhan in meiyazhagan and karikalan in ponniyin selvan almost has 1000 years difference between them.

Karikala chozhan mentioned in this m meiyazhagan movie is responsible for building a dam across Cauvery river in a city called Trichy in Tamil Nadu. And that dam still stands. He is one of the early chozha kings as mentioned.
The karikalan mentioned in ponninyin selvan is 'Adita karkalar', arul mozhi varman's elder brother and they were the medieval kings as mentioned by this commentor.

This movie was so close to my heart becoz I too had a very similar story I met my cousin ( very distant relative) but we used to be close till 8 years old my father and all of us moved to city . Even though I forgot his name we met after 20 years( just like in the movie similar marriage function) he spoke to me like we used to with so much purity and felt very guilty coz I couldn't remember his name I was speaking informally for almost entire day ( then asked my dad in secret about his name) but we had really good time like we used too best 3 days I spent so far. ❤ This movie made me so emotional ❤

Karikala cholan belongs to early chola dynasty(100CE).
Ponniyin selvan deals with Rajaraja cholan from 900CE.
Karikalan built the famous dam called Kallanai, which is one of the oldest dams in the world. Moreover it is still in working condition for almost 2000 years.

What a review Singhji, The Karikalan here is the early Chola. Takes us 2000+ years back. The early Karikala is sung in Sangam poetry. The stone Karthi worships is a hero stone (oldest form of Tamil religion of worshipping dead heros). The hero is the Chera king who died facing North. The song was written by a potter lady called Venni Kuyaththiyar. They still have the village Venni (the movie shows )..

I'm yet to come across someone who has not shed tears watching this movie. I watched it in Tamil with subtitles on OTT, loved every moment. There's a deleted scene with Dhoni, it seems it was deleted after few shows at the theater. Yaro Ivan Yaro by Kamal Hassan adds so much, we don't hear such lyrics much.. Wish there would be more such attempts at simplicity which I guess is so difficult to capture.

I think good movies irrespective of language is the key to minimise the North / South or East/ West divide of India. OTTs achieved what main stream movies could not . Over the top movies are no longer liked - doesn’t matter if they are in Hindi, Telugu or Tamil
I saw many Malayalam , Bengali , Marathi language movies - both good and some mediocre . Audience from any part of India will love a good movie. Panchayat serial is enjoyed by anyone who appreciate good serials / movies.
