Karthi was seriously superb in this movie like his character can be borderline annoying if the actor doesn't get it right but karthi just nailed it🔥🔥 he's instantly lovable❤

the talks about jallikattu are to show how meiyazhagan's life is affected by unknown peoples decision to ban jallikattu. Which gives lead to how his kith and kin were shot down when protesting against sterlite. And how he cares for those who protested as his own. And he does rituals for them every year in memory. All this is to show that his love is unbounded, not just for arulmozhi, but also for those who did him wrong and those who lost lives in protest.
the central point of the movie is to show how unbounded meiyazhagan's love is for all. so I felt those "long drunk rant scene" is crucial to the movie. I also didnt want the 3hr movie to end.

What a movie! I connected to myself while watching the movie. What a screen play, extraordinary! Not a big story, a Slow moving story telling but must watch! not for action lovers and not for trendy noisy bgm lovers. The realife situation played as a drama. Kudos to director Prem, he never forget to bring back our childhood memories as like 96.. that's his best touch .. Overall nice feel movie for those who understands the real life.. Love from Siva 💓

  • @Akiatta

I think Meiyazhagan and 96 are weirdly the same movie. It's about two people who have these unspoken feelings and emotions towards each other, and the whole film basically happens on one night where we are seeing them open up about them.
But, I feel that Meiyazhagan was a more interesting and frankly, a better film than 96. 96, for all the things it did right, relied a lot on us feeling and connecting to the nostalgia. But Meiyazhagan actually strayed away from the nostalgic elements, focusing on highlighting what make these two people interesting.

@@privacyisparamount3107 I don't disagree with you. This is a very expositional film. But, what I was talking about is the specific style that Prem does. Which is very indulgent, focusing on situations in a very small scale.

I kinda disagree with your point baddy.
Karthi as meyazhagan stands out for his nature of giving utmost importance to a very old cycle. Isn't it implicit that he would do a great husband too ? It again talks about how karthi deals with relations (objects/people) and how aravind swamy does.

@Baradwaj Rangan. I am beginning to figure out your reviews when you give positive reviews to random commercial movies and are harsh on movies such as this one.
I am a teacher. When a poor performer gets even one question right on a quiz, I am full of positivity and encouragement because my expectations are so low. But when a high performing student or one with great potential answers even one question wrong, I am disappointed and harsh. I think the difference is in managing one’s expectations. But the changing benchmark may lead to allegations of favoritism or even worse- paid reviews. 🙏🏽🙏🏽

Spot on. Though they tried to show Karthi as someone who loves all, that was already conveyed in jallikattu and when he asked arvind to forgive his bad doers. I would cut and throw away 2,3 sequences easily like one of two Ilayaraja songs, Sterlite, eelam issue discussion. It could have saved 20 mins and movie would have been near perfect. The drag in these sequences reduces the impact the brilliant climax could have actually given. But still it was goosebumps when arvind said meiazhaga..

Same 96 template in his Sophomore too. A kind of Reunion, two main characters talking a whole night. Tailor made characters for Karthi n Arvindswamy ❤❤
I felt the scenes between 'indha maan' and 'kodai kaala kaatre' went a bit out of track and could have been trimmed.
Like Karthi says in a scene 'nellikkai saapittadhukku apparam thanni kudicha madhiri irundhuchu', the movie gave a similar kind of feel ❤

    What makes #Meiyazhagan truly special?
Other than the fact that it is one of the most beautiful films ever made, it changes many narrative techniques in their head with an unbelievable positive spin.
    1. Narrative causality is the reason we believe in many films that when everyone feel extremely happy, in the next scene something bad is going to happen. Sometimes this feeling spills over into our 'reality' making us unable to enjoy our happy moments as we believe that it will be followed by a disaster. Meiyazhagan almost therapeutically heals us of this thinking with the high point being Karthi's salute to the cobra.
    2. Every one of us is a hero worshipper to someone but not all of us (non superstars) realize that even we are heros to some. Identifying these silent clappers and seeing our lives through their eyes is the best motivation we need in our lives. Exploring the vulnerability of an ordinary man and the happiness he gains by the perspective of his hero worshipper whom he doesn't even recognize is the story none of us knew we needed.
    3. The fact that all our answers are in front of us and we only need to look was demonstrated in the most stunning way in the end of the film.
In every sense a Master class film with brilliant performances by not only the lead actors but everyone of the minimal but stellar cast. Music was haunting and the voice of Ulaganayagan provided the touch of magic to elevate the experience to sublime levels.
Prem Kumar - player of heart strings.

@Baradwaj Rangan, I've not watched the movie yet. Do you watch a movie only with a goal of critiquing it, or do you enjoy watching movies as they are presented? No movie is perfect, and its hard to get inside any director's head and visualize what was originally conceived to what is being shown. So, getting detail oriented about certain things that the director should've shown may actually be unrealistic or sometimes even out of scope from a director's point of view. Just saying these so you could be more generic with your reviews. A director's journey is a continuously evolving journey with the kind of movies he/she makes.

    Meiazhagan
    Suriya’s View:
    I LOVED IT
If 96 talked about untold love between two pairs, Meiazhagan also talks about love but in a different way. It is also about memories, emotions, care and many more.
    The Good:
    1. The characters - They have been chosen wisely and make a mark irrespective of their screen time. Be it a bus conductor or a flower seller.
    2. The dialogues - They are short and sweet. They make a powerful impact to the movement of the story .
    3. The Performances - Arvind Swami is at his best. With minimal dialogues, his eyes and body speaks a lot. You will love him throughout the film.
    4. Karthi - As an innocent village guy, he does create a spark though we have seen similar roles in his earlier films. His dialogue delivery and emotions are so perfect.
    5. The Chemistry - With just 2 male characters for most part of the film, the chemistry between the two is fantastic.
    6. The Cinematography - The lighting and framing of the shots are top notch. It beautifully jel with the emotions of the lead characters.
    7. The Music - Govind Vasantha has once again kept us occupied with the emotions through his BGM.
    8. The wedding sequence in first half.
    The Bad:
    1. The jallikattu portions and few political dialogues could have been avoided. May be the new trimmed version might not have those.
    The Ugly:
Nothing. Yes you read it right.
Final Verdict: If you loved 96, and are a fan of feel good movies, this one is sure to impress you. C. Prem Kumar yet again proves he is worth the wait. (Took 6 years to complete the script)
    Rating - 4.25 / 5

I had great expectations of this movie given directed by 96 fame director ...but I felt not ao great about this movie as it was too melodramatic and somewhere movie dragged too much into emotional juat around 2 people which was boring for 3 hrs length... The side story of jallikattu, war history looked packed voluntarily in the movie... Acting was of course top notch and ARVIND SWAMY carried this movie with karthi who always I felt was good in village subjects.. Unlike 96 where there were other interesting stories , there wqs nothing much interesting ... This was more like a long novel fitting into a good webseries and I felt other good characters were wasted with no proper emotional fit like karthi wife character.... Also the reason for leaving the house should have been elaborated much more which would have added more strength to the base story which was too floating... Overall it showed a good lesson to city dwellers about their dreadful life and village men holds life

@@vishwam6072 EVR was anti Indian, anti Hindu & anti Tamil. Completely against our values. He was a British stooge & a firm supporter of upper & dominant castes like Pillais, Chettiars, Nadars etc. He did not care abt ST/SC or Dalit. He divided our Tamil society. Till today no Dalit/Sc or St can ever become CM.

@@Runread Our President is a Adivasi Women. Can you say her representation has brought about meaningful changes in lives of Adivasi or women in India. Representation as a concept works only when Representatives from Marginalised Communities in Power push for meaningful structural changes to uplift the represented communities , If not it is just Tokenism BJP does that a lot. Periyar is considered significant in Tamil spaces for contributing to anti caste and atheist sentiments ,which in itself is Pro Tamil and Pro Indian.

Softaana ஜாலி படம் .My Gripe, I think the movie discusses about being in touch with one's Roots and how one's Roots are their "Home" . But it tries to be apolitical at least in the trimmed version i saw. Felt that was a bit surface level and disingenuous. For all subject matter that it touches in detail , if Tamil nadu's caste underpinning are not discussed let alone be mentioned then it is a incomplete picture

Imagine Soorie was casted as Mieyazhagan! The character is pure innocence and gratitude, but a pestering one, which he would have aced. A great contrast to the handsome but hollowed out city dweller to simple, but bighearted villager.
No doubt Karthi is superlative here, but it would have made a huge difference, like Anbe Sivam.

No sir! If had casted Soori, it would had been a stereotypical of a village youth. There are "Karthi like" innocent People in remote villages too.

Engaging but detached!! Same here , everything was perfect, music , acting , cinematography but not even once it made me emotional, specially the dramatic wedding scene , superbly shot but failed to evoke any emotion in me !! This movie is a weird experience in my life , it’s superbly made movie but couldn’t connect to it !!

Will the Reviewers EVER learn to watch a movie/film
    WITHOUT
    any
    pre-set/pre-conceived/misinformed/
    ill-conceived Understanding or
    hand-me-down Received Wisdom of
    What Floor Plan & Architecture
    it should NECESSARILY have....????
When,oh when, the Reviewers will learn
to EXPERIENCE every movie with the clean slate of mind of an
    UN-PROGRAMMED Boy of 9 or 10....
    AND THEN write the Review
in the Same State of Heart&Mind.... INSTEAD of from the
    "Smarter Than Thou" or
    'Better Trained Than Thou"
    specious perspective????
Those of us who have never lived and experienced Small Town life and its
Socio-Political--Economic-Familial Dynamics & Mechanics & Ground Realities will be instantly tuned out by a few parts like the pace, finer nuances, behavioural patterns of some characters,
the drift & seasonings of the Narrative
for no fault of the Director !

Many may wonder why they imposed usual DMK talking points such as EVR, Jallikattu, Sterlite, & the usual ant-Brahmin innuendos in an otherwise unrelated genre from a totally different director.
    The reasons are multifold,
    1. 9/10 movies during DMK regime must mandatorily carry their Political talking points, given this movie is from DMK's home production boy Surya, it goes w/o saying.
    2. Many people are waking up against the oft-repeated DK-narratives around EVR, AntiB-Clique, Jallikattu, Sterlite, N-S divides etc. It required a rehashed psy-op, in the newest Kollywood genre.
    3. The Writer/Director wants to join in this DMK/DK eco-system, for survival.

BR reviews movies for everyone including Tamilians.
A lot of us non-Tamilians who watch these movies with subtitles like to understand what is what and to understand a lot of local nuances we won't get. Do try and understand that :)
