Ok that’s actually a cool idea with what your doing as far as this series will go to!!!! So basically your going to do a breakdown of the whole game but breaking them up to one Ep at a time, going over the positive and negatives, I can dig this new breakdown or analysis of Minecraft Story Mode!!!! You did bring up some good points in the first Ep like how the Witherstorm design is old but a new terrifying threat, how Ivor will go from a villain to one of the best characters in the game later on the road, and more!!!
You have the same feelings i do about this game! As a kid i loved it, and i thought the world was lowkey kinda compelling. And now im an adult and have seen more well written things, i will say if this game was rewritten, it could actually be pretty good imo. I have actually had the idea of rewriting it before. In my opinion the fact it was minecraft kind of stunted the story, but i do enjoy the references to crafting and minecraft items tho
I've been in the Minecraft story mode fandom since 2016, I unironically cried over Ruben's death as a kid, and only now after the Minecraft movie trailer this game has received any amount of praise that I've seen? Nobody knew what we had until they were confronted with something worse! (Also this was a really good video, I know it came out a year ago but I'm glad that MCSM is getting better recognition. All the MCSM blogs i follow on Tumblr are rejoicing. ((Also yes, there is a fandom for it on Tumblr)))
But to my surprise I absolutely love this game, saw many famous RUclipsrs play this game, that kinda got me to play this game, I think it’s a fun game, and quite honestly Telltale most underrated game!!! Yes I’m 24, but I still love this game!! The music is so good like the main menu music!!! You actually got big actors in this game with Patton Oswalt as Male Jesse and Catherine Taber as Female Jesse, Paul Reubens aka Pee Wee Herman as Ivor, Ashley Johnson as Petra, and many more!!!! I love the 2 different story arcs, The Wither Storm and The Portals!!!! Jesse, Petra, Ivor, and Lukas are quite literally the Main PVP of this franchise!!!!!
Now this games isn’t perfect, Ep 2 Assembly Required is a very short Ep but that is because it was released 2 weeks after the first ep 1 was out at the time, which really felt like a weakness!! Some of the choices in this game doesn’t really affect the story, but some do! I really wish they had more time with Axel and Olivia because after Ep 5, they leave and we don’t see them again until Ep 8, and on that note Season 2 sidelined them again for seeing them for the beginning of Season 2 Ep 1 and again until the Ep 5!!!
Dude! I'm SUPER hooked on your video essay! I loved your content, humor and honest opinion! Minecraft Story Mode is actually my all-time favorite game because I found comfort in the characters when I was going through a hard period. I can't wait to hear the rest of your video essay, if anything I'm hungry for more!
the ideas this game had were pretty good. the actual character writing feels like it was made for 10 year old's but ideas for these stories are great. apocalypse scenario involving a mutated wither, with a side story about the ender dragon being killed illegitimately by a command block? fantastic. portals leading to different worlds, which could be interpreted as other people's minecraft worlds? great for story ideas. Skyblock, a murder mystery like those minecraft youtube roleplay videos, a giant red stone computer intelligence, minigames powered by corrupt organizations. A really fun saga of episodes. Admins that are so corrupt by their power, are toxic and manipulative. that's really interesting and creates a threatening antagonist (and i'd say probably some of the better writing in the series). A world below the bedrock barrier, as opposed to just nothing, with all the same environments but with a way bleaker atmosphere? perfect. the soundtrack isn't all that bad either, i remember it so it must have been good.
You mentioned the bow vs fishing rod bit and called it an easter egg, but you wanna know what is an actual easter egg? You can make a lever with the materials Petra gives you to make a sword. Funnily enough (at least on the ps4 version) it actually gives you an achievement for it xD
I ain’t an actor kinda person myself, but I am one thing. And that one thing is a ginormous Patton Oswalt fan. After Telltale Closed in 2018 I think it is, I kinda got lucky with finding Minecraft Story Mode Season 1 at my Goodwill and getting the second season at the Exchange!!!! I honestly cant believe this game is well now going to be 8 years old, I remember seeing trailers of it, and just like you at first I thought really Telltale who did The Walking Dead game, Tales of the Borderland, and more was going to do a story in Minecraft I honestly thought it won’t work and it would be terrible
I’m not bashing on the video or anything, but the general consensus around Minecraft story mode is that it was amazing and that everyone loved it, why do I see so many things on the Internet saying “why did everyone hate this game?“ Literally everyone loved it.

am i the only one who found out people actually really disliked minecraft story mode. like this is a genuine question, because when it released all i saw were good reviews, and i desperately wanted to play it for myself. i was hyperfixated on it for like a year and a bit
Can relate, I played Minecraft Story Mode 1 and 2, and I can say with confidence...! Both games are exactly as average as the other, I never seen a game that more perfectly maintained it's averageness in continuation. It's not worse. It's not better. It's exactly as questionable with it's moments and misfortunates. *I always found this mid quality it's own charm on Minecraft Story Mode. I don't know if I would like it as much if it was genuinely one of the best games out there, seriously.*
Minecraft Story Mode is admittingly not the best game writing wise, but it definitely has its good moments that still give me chills or excitement. I sadly only ever owned the first chapter so I haven't played the whole game myself but I've watched people play it and its still on of my favorite games and I wish I owned it. I will one day, or I'll pirate it somehow though I doubt it. Its one of those bizarre games that is only made once. Though MC Story Mode was made twice somehow and the second game is just as good for me. Oh and the MUSIC is SOO GOOD, especially the Wither Storm theme. Still gives me chills.
there are sources online to pirate it safely, if you look up “guide to pirating mc story mode” there should be a long list of options for you :) honestly pirating isnt that dangerous as long as you have an adblocker
I play a lot of telltale games. You can criticize them for a little of things. But they throw in little details like that all the time. Like in the Batman game, they have dark knight quotes. And if I remember correctly even has the ventriloquist as a model and Va character, and when the ventriloquist is in arkum his sock puppet is a Kightfall Easter egg. If want a good mercenary character I’d look up and read marvels Deaths head. Deaths head loves to kill but needs to get paid for it to justify doing. Not justify morally, deaths head need a plot for him to have fun. The black eye doesn’t mean anything, and if you pick the other option he doesn’t have the black eye. And when the game was coming out. Ruben having the black eye was chose in their marketing highlighted as a notable one. If you save Gab it’s extremely interesting how it changes his relationship because he constantly hints about his guilt. The gab is so good I never saved Petra. And the fake unwinable qte is telltale trope.
my libraries had a very limited selection of games, mostly edutainment or like 16-bit era stuff. I think the only game from this millennium I ever borrowed was a wii game I don’t even remember
Cool video! I like what you've got going on here - your analysis was very intriguing. I was in this fandom back in its heyday, and recently watching Kwite's playthrough got it back on my radar. Heh, Radar. Regarding 34:52 - It actually isn't possible to get that quick time event, no matter what you do. I think there's another fake QTE in this game, but I don't remember where. I'll be tuning in for more in this series! Don't forget to do Season 2. It's a huge improvement over S1.
Huh??? I just finished the video and noticed it only has 310 views. At first i thought "Oh nice 310k glad this video blew up" before dubble cheking and realising no, 310. Which is still respectable but like? with the quality of the video and commentary along with the theme im honestly shocked this hasnt blown up yet!! First video i've seen of your content! Time to binge your old videos while waiting for part 2, along with pestering my friends to also do so. Minecraft story mode is a wild ride :D
I find it interesting the way you harp on the way they do mouths and such so much..... when it's like the ONE thing I think they pretty much got 100% right. The way they animated talking was basically the entire reason I gave it the time of day, because it was in the context of buttloads of animations being uploaded onto YT that looked TERRIBLE with movement. They managed to make a mouth flap system which, in the absence of perfect specific animations, actually mostly maintained the style of the game with only little bits extra to make it work. Much much better than so many cheap animations from the time that just treated the entire MC texture as a baseline for a totally mailable face that they could just stretch out to fit typical models. Their technique is almost like a stop-motion solution, less "i just learned blendr" and more Lego movie.
Personally, I've only seen video games in a library once. Every other time its purely books, 50% chance there's movies/tv shows, and occasionally there's Manga (which was oddly enough, more common than Comics in libraries). Granted, it's been a while since I've been to a library (I do my reading digital).
This is a good video, and I think releasing it as you complete it is a good idea. I still think it would be great if you had your video essays on a separate channel from your let's plays, and releasing the video essays in chunks might allow you to do that.
6:49 Just note that I say this as someone who was a diehard fan of the game when I was younger. I'll elaborate a bit more on that. One of the common arguments I saw against Story Mode, was that the choices you make really don't affect the story that much. As I've gotten older and learned more about what makes a good story, I honestly agree with that. Here's an example: in the first episode, you get the option to either save Petra or Gabriel. For the next couple of episodes, it's being somewhat implied that the person you didn't save is dead, but then whoever you don't save just comes back at the end of episode 3. Yeah they have amnesia, but they get their memory back and everything's fine later. There are a lot of scenarios like that in the game. Again, I'm not a hater, just sharing my thoughts on a game from my childhood.
I always loved that game. It had flaws, of course, but for a game that on surface is story-driven only by players (and thus doesn't have "foundational story" like Walking Dead or Batman) its story was quite interesting balance between assuming people inside Minecraft are living beings that live by the game rules and also implying the "game" aspects of the story are technically still within the universe. Administrator wasn't the player, I think? He was THE person with powers, but not an outsider or OWNER of world, as for say. It was quite interesting blend! I also made my ULTIMATE WEAPON A HOE in that specific moment when they give you super ingredients (or were those diamonds?) and like only 0.4% people did that at the moment it made me laugh HARD
a former telltate employee said that the telltale employees loved working on story mode, so the game definitely had love into it and wasn't just for cash 😭
I’m confused people actually HATE this game? I remember one time in ran into this smuck on Instagram who was trying to defend the super Mario movie for its lousy story and I brought up Minecraft story mode to explain why the Mario movie had no excuses for its bad story execution and that user began to question why I was defending mcsm!
Man this game was fun, But now here is a fun fact if you somehow don't know. Dee bradley baker voices every animated clone, Clone wars and Bad batch (rebels never happened), He also voiced the clones in the Skywalker saga
I can’t believe people disliked this game? It was huge back in its day I remember. In my opinion it wasn’t bad at all. The characters in the first five episodes were meh, but they definitely improve later on and become pretty lovable. And I always thought its story was pretty amazing. I loved its concept of the witherstorm and the apocalypse it caused, and especially its dimension hopping plot line. I’ve always been weirdly fascinated with storylines that involve a multiverse, and its story of the characters being lost within it, trying in vain to find theirs I’ve always adored. Its other smaller concepts are all great in my opinion. The animation can admittedly be pretty goofy at times, but I don’t think it takes away from it. If anything I think it fits with Minecraft pretty well, because Minecraft can be unintentionally pretty goofy at times. And its graphics still hold up fairly well, which I think is impressive. And the scene where the characters run from the witherstorm for the first time will always be one of if not my favorite scene in any game. Its lighting and graphics really stand out to me compared to the rest of the game, the action was very consistent and engaging, and I love the hopeless tone it creates. You can really feel the powerlessness of the characters as they flee, yet their resourcefulness as they survive. And the music that plays really brings it all together. The track on its own is phenomenal and extremely nostalgic for me, and I love how different it is from other boss themes. It stays fairly tame, letting the action and story of the scene create the atmosphere, but its tones give a faint feeling of dread that really brings it all together. I’m probably biased considering how much I adored this game as a kid, but whatever. I still love this game so much.
When the hell did people hate Minecraft Story Mode? Everyone I knew loved it and I loved it too. Not once have I seen or heard people calling it a bad game. Wtf?

The way I had to fight to defend this game when I was younger n now everyone’s appreciating it cause of the movie 😭
I really dont remember people bashing it back then. I loved this game, and I saw so much love for it online, especially when they collabed with minecraft youtubers. Which was the coolest thing. The game holds up.
@@DaARK_Chocolategang I saw a bit of hate a while after it came out. People making fun of its “writing” (which is still fine to me? 😬)
@@DaARK_Chocolategang for example the channel RTGame has a series of “A Guy Who Hated Bad Writing Plays Minecraft Story Mode”
@@DaARK_Chocolategang okay that’s true, I did remember a lot of people losing their minds for that ep, but with my peers and sometimes online I had to stick up for the game cause some people wanted Alex and Steve and not the characters we saw.
@@scarlettbolintin7344 Ngl wanting Alex and Steve is understandable. Although Patin Oswalt did a fantastic job as Jesse
Seeing everyone hating on this game always left me confused. I was always fond of story mode and found some of the story beats very captivating. I remember waiting for a lets player to finish that sequence with the endermen... he never did :(
Sure, Story Mode has some issues in the writing, but it's still overall very charming.
The crafting table has a few secret Easter egg recipes I don’t remember any. But if the final weapon you craft is the hoe, to fight the wither storm. You get some funny lines.
I never did it but one of my friends did.
You can craft a lever in the start, as well as a fishing rod instead of a bow
while it is a bad game it’s our bad game and it lives in our hearts and childhoods and i will always love it no matter how questionable the dialogue characters changes or anything else is it gave us the wither storm fast mine carts
Exactly
bad game my ass it was great
@@yanczy.21YEAJ EXACTLY IT WAS GOOD?? The storyline was mad interesting
Its not bad
If there’s an animated creature and it’s actually got a voice actor contributing it’s noises instead of a sound bank, you can bet your ass that the VA is Dee Bradley Baker. That dude does EVERYTHING, we’re gonna be fucked as an industry when and if he dies.
4:50 well this aged like milk (also the Netflix version only had the first five episodes of season one which…why? Episode five is the beginning of a new story arc and ends on a cliffhanger, literally the worst place you could end the story. It would’ve been better to only have the first four episodes available if they couldn’t get the whole season)
16:10 i actually loved axel for exactly that reason he was my favourite character because his size and look complemented his personality so well, i was extremely disappointed when i bought his skin on Minecraft and it was the normal proportions

BROO I CRIED OVER RUBEN'S DEATH TOO 😭😭 i was devastated
Same! Dang it the Minecraft Story Mode games will always be in my heart. I love them
The sped up resource gathering is so iconic to minecraft RUclipsrs.
This game is the textbook definition of “so bad it’s good”
Now this games isn’t perfect, Ep 2 Assembly Required is a very short Ep but that is because it was released 2 weeks after the first ep 1 was out at the time, which really felt like a weakness!!
I’ve never watched one of your video essays before but this was really enjoyable and had some very funny commentary. Looking forward to part 2
Dude! I'm SUPER hooked on your video essay! I loved your content, humor and honest opinion! Minecraft Story Mode is actually my all-time favorite game because I found comfort in the characters when I was going through a hard period. I'm a huge fan of the game because of it and watching this video made my day, I enjoyed it so much! I respect your thoughts and opinions on the game, whether you enjoyed it or were annoyed by it.
So I obviously love this game, and love Jessie, and love all of Minecraft story mode, and I love listening to that blocky man talk. I could listen to him for hours and hours and hours and hours and hours and hours and hours and…..
I never had a problem with the game. I've always had a soft spot for stories that change based on your choices.
Same, I never really had a major problem with the game. There are some issues here and there. But the story, music, and gameplay are fun enough for me
Thank you! Thank you so much for acknowledging that directors can make crap directions for voice actors!
I’m not bashing on the video or anything, but the general consensus around Minecraft story mode is that it was amazing and that everyone loved it, why do I see so many things on the Internet saying “why did everyone hate this game?“ Literally everyone loved it.
Did everyone actually love it? I've watched the gameplay and I was terribly sad when everyone kept making videos on how bad it was. I'm glad people actually enjoyed it
@@Michelle-pd3ke I’ve seen recent analytical videos like this one saying that they were bad, but people who actually played the games said it was amazing, I also played the games and I think that it was incredible. @@UnidentifiedFlyingSquirrel Yeah it was mad incredible. I've seen some comments that explain how the game has many plot holes and the story was predictable. But for a 7-9 hour gameplay (season 1)? I don't think it's very predictable. The characters are all lovable as well.
@@Michelle-pd3ke season 1 and 2 are so incredible, so many genuinely good plot twists that fit, and I couldn’t see any plot holes after playing through the entire series, it all made sense. Idk why people talk about what they don’t know about

am i the only one who found out people actually really disliked minecraft story mode. like this is a genuine question, because when it released all i saw were good reviews, and i desperately wanted to play it for myself. i was hyperfixated on it for like a year and a bit
@@henriquemachado9941 yeah! like it’s really not bad. not saying it was incredible, but it certainly doesn’t deserve the hate it’s been getting.
20:11 literally the new minecraft movie.
Great now I can't stop hearing Remy when Jesse speaks
What have you done to me
my libraries had a very limited selection of games, mostly edutainment or like 16-bit era stuff.
19:47 why did I actually kinda laugh at this part
First video i've seen of your content! insert Matpat
Order of the stone was also the original name of Minecraft after it was called 'Cave Game'
funnily enough I alwasy found the animation style and lipsynching *idk how to write that* was the best part, most charming... and I always enjoyed it
Ivor remains my favourite character for 2 different reasons.
The first being: “I’M A *NINJA* JESSE!”
The second being: “HAHAHAHAHA! ADVENTURE!”
The Minecraft movie trailer did for Minecraft story mode what the Star Wars movie sequels did for the prequel trilogy
Personally, I've only seen video games in a library once. Every other time its purely books, 50% chance there's movies/tv shows, and occasionally there's Manga (which was oddly enough, more common than Comics in libraries). Granted, it's been a while since I've been to a library (I do my reading digital).
only bad thing about minecraft story mode is lukas and jesse never kissed

This video is a perfect visual for adhd
That shit was fire and you can’t change my mind
a former telltate employee said that the telltale employees loved working on story mode, so the game definitely had love into it and wasn't just for cash 😭
Ivor as Pee-Wee Herman makes a lot of sense if you think about it
I’m confused people actually HATE this game?
I remember one time in ran into this smuck on Instagram who was trying to defend the super Mario movie for its lousy story and I brought up Minecraft story mode to explain why the Mario movie had no excuses for its bad story execution and that user began to question why I was defending mcsm!
Man this game was fun, But now here is a fun fact if you somehow don't know. Dee bradley baker voices every animated clone, Clone wars and Bad batch (rebels never happened), He also voiced the clones in the Skywalker saga
one of my favorite games
Minecraft Story Mode will always be a masterpiece. I will die on that hill.
im not gonna lie i didnt really see an issue with the mouthes moving when they talk
Same, I kinda got tired of his tangent. The art style and animation of the game seem fine to me.
Wtf?
I enjoyed the game when I was a kid and I still think its a great game.
I love how popular the this video became after the release of the Minecraft trailer! I think that whether or not you liked Minecraft Story Mode you could tell that it was made for Minecraft players. It represented the community, and it doesn't look like A Minecraft Movie will do that.
Fun fact, in the first episode when u miss the quicktime for jumping over chickens, jesse will say "Damn"
A couple scenes earlier, petra says "hell"
So "crap" is not the worst word in this game
☝🤓
The quicktime event with the witherstorm right before The Nether sequence is unwinnable, you HAVE to fail it, which sucks
tysm for making a essay abt this game, also i didnt know mcsm was that weird. i loved games even if their buggy, a bit cursed. i thought mcsm was fine lol, ty for making a essay for this cuz i never knew
anyone who hated minecraft story mode clearly just tells me you're one of those people who hates things for being new. there's genuinely NOTHING wrong with it. it has and always has been amazing. how did ANYONE hate story mode??
Dave Fennoy voiced Lee Everest the main protagonist of Season 1 The Walking Dead, it makes sense that he gets another role in a Telltale game because he voiced the most iconic protagonist from Telltale.
Great video man! You're Dangerously underrated. Can't wait for part 2!
There are actually quite a few forced fail QTEs, the one where you try to save both people is one of them. I know at least one more comes up later, but you probably know what that one is.

I've always loved Minecraft Story Mode, and it makes me so upset that we couldn't get more after Season 2, and how its acrially impossible to get the game now legitimately
I owe this game a massive apology for hating on it as a kid, upon replay (and seeing the Minecraft movie trailer, which prompted the replay) it's actually not that bad
Dude, if video games in libraries was super standardized... what a paradise that would be. Games preservation and archiving is so far behind where it should be.
