MG ZS 180 - Handbrake Repair/Rear Brake Caliper Replacement
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 18 окт 2024
- The MG ZS 180 handbrake is well known for being rather poor, but mine was actively bad, and in need of some attention.
This repair should also cover the other ZS variants, and the same approach is valid for most cars which use a handbrake acting on the rear caliper.
I also dismantle it so you can see why these kinds of handbrake mechanisms have a tendency to fail in this way.

Thank you this has helped me find out where i went wrong
£117 ain't cheap - thanks for your dismantled review at the end - I'm spurred to rebuild mine (I've done seal kits before - this is another step, gulp) old git, UK as an edit/P.S. Rebuilt!!! whoopee
Good work there Dave, I subbed awhile back for the Mira, I have no interest in replacing rover calipers but feel compelled to watch all your videos and progress, you're the English version of chrisfix, keep it up and you too will be able to get a Hummer (insert dream car here) 😃👍
Hey, thanks! Don't worry, this isn't my meal ticket, it's just something I do for fun, and I noticed a large proportion of my audience is American, so I figured I might as well introduce them to interesting cars that they never got over there - there's another one that fits that metric coming up after the MG ;-).
Appreciate you watching, though, and likewise, let me know if there's something I should focus on! I'm trying to choose what I make videos on so as not to overlap what I've already covered (e.g. I didn't film refurbing the MG alloys because, well, I covered it with the Daihatsu, and up to a point, a wheel's a wheel).
Unfortunately my dream car (outside of the fleet I already own) is an XJ220, so might be a while before RUclips gets me there!
Very high quality video Dave. I'm thinking of rebuilding rear caliper on my MG ZS 120. The front calipers went well but I'm hesitating to battle with circlips & springs in the rear!
Yes, new video
How long did this job take, please. I was wondering whether to do this job myself, or employ a mobile mechanic who charges £60 an hour.
When I replace a caliper I prefill the caliper with fluid before attaching the hose. Makes it a bit easier/quicker to bleed.
If you get the piston retracted all the way, and minimise how much air you introduce with swapping the hose over, it really doesn't get that much air into the system.
If you've not bled it for a while, you might as well give it a full flush, but otherwise, no reason not to minimise how much air gets dropped in there.
hi, nice video, also you forgot to add it to playlist
Huh, nice catch, thanks! Added it now.
@@InitialDave you are welcome
Thanks for the video! Is there no way to fix the seized part? I've got the same problem on a Honda Jazz and have already paid a few ££ to get the 'caliper' changed which seemed to only mean half of the whole caliper so the fault remains 😢
Yes, you can dismantle them and rebuild them with a kit (try Bigg Red), but really, a caliper replacement should have included the whole thing, except perhaps the carrier and slider pins? And if the issue is the slider pins, you can replace those as well if just taking them out and greasing them doesn't help.
Where did you source your rear caliper from please?
Might have just been an Ebay one, if I'm remembering correctly.
The nightmare of trying to balance Honda rear handbrakes.
Honestly, I bloody hate rear discs when it comes to handbrakes. I'll happily sacrifice a small amount of normal braking capacity for a reliable, powerful handbrake across the rear axle.
Did this for mine last year. Unfortunately the cable was also stretched or worn due to the abuse it took before I owned it.
Having only JUST got through the MOT on it's 3rd go because of this one fault it's bound up again and worn out the brake pad in under 10 months with light driving.
I'm looking to have to change the entire cable setup now, which I've been told requires to drop the exhaust and lift up the read seats....
I hate this caliper design. Nothing but problems with them no matter what manufacture uses them.
Yep, I've found that they all seize eventually, especially if used in a British winter with salt on the roads.
But if it's a rear disc setup with the handbrake using a miniature drum brake inside the disc bell, they're often quite weak due to the small diameter.
Transmission handbrakes like on Land Rovers sidestep both issues, but add complication and are braking through the open diff, so have their limitations.
Frankly, to have a handbrake that's reliable and fairly powerful, rear drum brakes are still hard to beat!
