As someone in the middle of that change from low budget music videos to more medium sized budgets and small crews, this was extremely valuable to see everything the way you organized it. And as a lot of people have said, thank you for the transparency on the actual numbers. Your channel has an insane amount of value !
I just can't thank you enough for this extremely insightful info you've given us here. I so much appreciate this. Thank you and happy new year in advance ...
Thanks! Two questions: - When did you receive money from the client? Upfront? After the final cut? Half and half? - Have you ever heard of We Direct Music Videos? They not only fight for music video directors and producers rights but they also provide a ton of treatments on their website.
as someone who is small and does little to no budget music videos, all this information was so overwhelming bc this rlly put into perspective every single aspect thats required for a professional shoot. it kinda scared me at first but eventually i wanna be working at that level
No idea how extremely helpful this was. Literally have a call with two upcoming projects with artists tomorrow. I already know they are lower budget run'n gun style, but this may help put things into perspective for helping to frame the consult.
Yo good brother! I thank you a ton for putting this video out. This a true testament to your genuineness towards fellow and aspiring creatives. You have my word when I get to the level I want to reach, I would extend the same courtesy to the world and won't forget that you were one of the ones that inspired me, and helped with such videos. I know it was personal for you to share this budget, when I heard you say that, I had to drop a genuine comment from the heart brother. Peace and love. Happy New Year. Continue to inspire us and be great! If you are ever in NYC/NJ area I'd be more than happy to come help on set free of charge, cause what you teach on this channel is worth wayyy more than what we watch it for.
Hey Josh, I really appreciate all of your videos and how transparent you are. I'm just starting my company and these videos help tremendously. I've been subbed for many years now and I can't thank you enough for all I've learned.
Awesome!!!! (even i feel way too much on your own work, since you will manage from A to Z, with all the stress and potential revisions). Again, awesome!!
Thank you so much for helping break down larger music video budgets. This helps in more ways than one! Can I ask, how do you market to artists? How did you market from back when you got $1k-3k clients vs clients that have larger budgets 15-20k and up?
Bro thank you so much for sharing this! I learned a lot! I may be doing some big shoots pretty soon and this video gave me a lot of insight ! Especially hiring out to create a big budget team!
I'm still only starting out as a freelancer, half of my work is still free, half is paid - been watching and learning from you for ages. Do you think you could do a video soon where you go into the more beginner/semi-pro fields of producing a shoot? I have people I use as set designers, a 1st AD that shares the producer role with me, as well has hair/mua artists - but still working with budgets that are under £1500. Would really love your advice
Just Directed and Produced a Music video. Editing it now and truly takes lots of time. We have to take cuts and work harder to help the production be better.
My question would be how much percentage do I request from the client? is it all the money upfront? 70%? how do I make that decision? and how much pls ?
You overpaid yourself and producer. The producer should be making 5%, you can be at 20% as EP/director/editor. DITs are also unnecessary on small shoots. Studio 60 I’ve been able to shoot for $1000 for a big favor job. In my opinion, the more big jobs you work, the easier it is to get favors from past crew and vendors
Look if no one else will tell you.. I will..... AWGE creates visuals that are a chase to the bottom, hot garbage. Horrible cinematography and cheesy effects attempt to mask their lack in actual talent or creativity. Nothing worse than a group of trash ass dudes running around with cameras thinking they making movies! It's a chase to the bottom in this industry. AWGE and others like them are ruining the music video industry. JS
