I don't use a kayak I never fished out of a kayak but the thing that I do like when I see tournaments on RUclips is that the low impact on the actual fish like you said they catch the fish that measure it to take a picture and they let it go right away they don't haul 20 miles away from where they caught it and put in a live well and put in bags and then bring them all the way in and all that stuff the fish are a lot less stressed

I am a kayak angler. I love watching your channel, as it has taught me a lot. I don’t think you have an accurate picture of tournament kayak fishing though. The guys out there competing in and winning these national and even local level tournaments all use electronics to great success, same as bass boaters. The experience is alot differ than any other fishing platform and for many, myself included, the electronics, the trolling motor, etc don’t take away from the experience, but in fact add to it. Kayak fishing for me starts in my living room or in my truck on the way to work when I am game planning something or working out something I need to rig on my kayak to fill a need to ultimately accomplish a specific goal. The. It is the time in the shed doing the rigging. The trial and error. The map study, game planning, making decisions on where to spend my time most effectively. Then it is the actual fishing on the water. I don’t gosh this way because I am limited to it. I fish this way because I prefer it. The unsteady wobble of a kayak while fighting a 20+ inch bass is a rush like no other. It takes everything about fishing that I love and dials it up to 11. I also kayak catfish and that is another exciting beast to tackle in a kayak. The electronics, the trolling motor, the rods, the rigging…it’s all part of the process I love that gets me to that grip and grin picture. And if you’re smart about it, having a tricked out kayak is a fraction of a fraction of the cost of a basic bass boat.

In my opinion it's not a kayak if you put a motor on it...its a small boat...and it should NOT be allowed in kayak fishing tournaments.

I fish exclusively from a kayak, and am incredibly grateful for the low-cost access its given me to this sport/hobby and personal fitness activity. I had a 2-door car, tied it on the rooftop... and just like that I could fish Lanier, Allatoona, Hollis Lathem, etc. I wonder what percentage of your subscribers, or many of the popular bass fishing youtube channels, are like me.
I agree the insanely decked-out setups are a bit much, but that's my personal preference. You can see how it's getting to be like boat bass fishing, in that the money/sponsors is all in the tech, expensive kayaks, accessories, etc... follow the money.
There will always be a place for lighter-weight, "fun-fishing" kayaks though. Most of us fish local trails or just do it for fun, after all.

I agree that it will be the fastest growing segment. I'm still under peddle power and am a little jealous of the motorized guys, but peoplewin from all kinds of kayaks. Some clubs don't allow motors. I fished a tournament on Tenkiller last weekend. I was fishing a pocket and a glitter rocket came trolling around the corner right when i cracked a nice 18" largemouth. I talked to the guys for a minute. They were fishing a biat tournament and had not caught anything that good. It just goes to show you can catch as many out of a plastic boat as you can from a glass boat. You just have to do more map study and try to launch in an area that has good options that you can reach. It's my first season. We're really lucky here in NW Arkansas. We have a great club, Natural State Kayak Anglers. I'm just a rookie, but I enjoy it immensely. Come down and fish with us sometime. MOYAK in MO is also a super strong club. Yes, you are correct about launching. We have to launch from a public access point.

The guys that have all that crap on their kayak lose the advantages that a kayak offers. They have to have easy enough access to launch from a trailer. The motors aren't quiet so they lose the stealth aspect. They can't get back into those places where boats can't go. I've fished kayak tournaments on HUGE bodies of water (Mead, Mohave and Havasu are my "home" waters and I've fished the CA Delta, Clear Lake, Santee Cooper, Toledo Bend and plenty of others) and I don't feel that I'm at a disadvantage compared to the guys with motors. I'm not even in that good of shape anymore and I can still maintain around 5mph for runs of several miles and pedal all day. More graphs is just more stuff in the way. You're only at a disadvantage against someone who spent more money than you if you convince yourself that you are.

I've manually competed in kayak tournaments against guys with better electronics, pdl or electric powered kayaks and I will say yes, they had a little bit of an edge over me in terms of fishing to paddle time, even the most rigged out tournament kayaks are in the neighborhood on $20,000+ which in perspective, you can compete at an extremely high level for $20,000 vs going to a normal bass boat tournaments where you're competing against guys with $100,000 rigs. Not that money is everything as we know it takes skill to utilize those electronics and be successful in tournaments the barrier to entry in elite kayak fishing tournaments is significantly lower and less intimidating than getting into traditional high-end bass tournaments.

My experience however is that kayakers are a different breed. Most have built their setups, figured out the battery boxes themselves and pieced together parts of their kayaks. The community shares information and mostly about growing the sport and camaraderie. However, to your point, it’s already evolving into a pay to play environment as well. “Go Big or Go Home” mentality probably but thats everything these days I guess. Its like that with everything. Why do bass boats have to have multiple graphs on top of sometimes multiple live sonar set ups, GPS trolling motors, and 200hp motors? You dont need that much but it sure is nice to have them. Same with kayaks. Some people pedal, paddle, or troll. Some folks have multiple graphs and livescope, while some others have a simple sonar unit without maps or side view. You don't need any of that to go fish and win tournaments, but it sure helps and if people like them and can afford them then they should be able to have them. A fully decked out kayak, top notch everything will cost on the high end $15k, what most competitive kayak anglers are spending in their set up over time is probably closer to $5-6k and that puts you on a level playing field with the top guys in the sport. You cannot compare that to boat tournemts as $5-6k gets you barely into a decent boat to fish small local stuff.

CPR is so much easier on the fish and I believe is more fair.

It already is the fastest growing aspect of fishing. No coangler, and no relocation of fish. No tournament organization allows gas powered kayaks-only electric and the hull hydrodynamics limits and plateaus the speed to a diminishing return. Anglers have to predict where to launch on a big lake for the best total length since the range is limited compared to bass boats. Loading and relocating to another part of the lake is a big time suck and is done for a last resort, usually. Oh- and the camaraderie is much better with the kayak crowd compared to the bass boat crowd- I've done both and currently fish both since I also have a bass boat.

I just can't see myself fishing out of a kayak. To many boaters don't respect small boaters. They fly in and out of coves creating large waves and things like that. Not to mention a big fish pulling you around. It is just not for me. I am sure it is peaceful and more beneficial though. I myself idle around bank fisherman and other boaters. I also shut my boat down way before approaching any other fisherman. It is a thing called respect on the water and I think a lot of fishermen lack these days

Yak tournys is not the same as yak fishing for fun. A Wally World yak and pole and 20 miles up creek is cool and a blast. Boundaries are important tho for the integrity of the sport and crucial for growth just like in any other competitive sport.

Kayaks are great for all of the reasons mentioned here. They're also a great option since you don't need to worry about registering them (unless you add a motor), insuring them, getting a title for them, dealing with trailers, or even having to own a truck to transport them. Just strap it down (properly) to a roof rack and go wherever you can find public access to water. Wanna park somewhere and walk a mile down a path to get there? Fine. Strap it down to a decent cart and start hiking. Pretty much all of the headaches of actually owning a boat are removed, but you get almost all of the benefits of being able to get off the bank and then some.

100% agree with this commentary. I am very interested in kayak tournament fishing but I have no interest in doing it as I just have no interest in a motor/sonar. Honestly even peddle drives break a lot of the benefits of kayaks for me but I recognize how useful that is.

I've fished tourney's in both kayaks and bass boats and love the kayak better. I just love that the noise is much reduced. There is a peace that comes with the early morning and no noise when kayak fishing - I feel closer to nature and the joy that comes with it. Plus, you really have to plan your strategy better because you can't run the whole lake in most cases.
But, beware, sometimes the bass boats don't respect the kayakers - I was getting to a spot at the last tournament I fished and a bass boat "beat" me to the spot by like one minute because he could get there just a little bit faster - I'm curious if he would have thought differently about jumping in front of me at this particular spot if I was in a bass boat rather than a kayak. Guess I can't say for sure...

I’m not a fan of high dollar fishing technology on kayaks either. Perhaps kayak tournaments can be structured so there are bare bones kayak tournaments with no motors or electronics. And then separate tournaments for electronics and all the bells and whistles.

I started fishing from a kayak last year and fell in love... I'm actually planning to sell my big boat this year. The only thing a 250 horsepower engine does is drive over fish to get to other fish... In addition to the reasons you mentioned, kayaks are easier to store, and WAY easier to maintain. My kayak is moderately rigged out... I take 4 rods, have a peddle drive and a motor, as well as a small fishfinder with downscan and GPS. It makes me feel like a bass-fishing fighter pilot, I have all my gear at my fingertips.
As far as tournaments, I don't fish them (I prefer to compete against myself), but I like that they are lower impact on the fishery than traditional tournaments.

I don't see anyone else or have seen a single person besides myself at one of them. When I'm catching big largemouth & crappie I like to keep these places on the down low! When the crappie eat 5" sencos like a bass you know you found a good spot.
