@@landonmorel3715 she didn't look that way in 1st round....only as the 2nd wore on and she was unable to get a KO. I give all credit to Pena. She caused Amanda to fatigue by hanging in pocket and trading. Amanda was throwing every shot 100% hunting the knockout. It is draining to be the agressor going full bore only to realize that you've thrown your best shots and your opponent is still there.
Yeah that round is up there with 5th round between Leon and Nate as exciting goes. I agree with Joe though that it's inexcusable to get that tired in the 2nd round. Even Nick being away for 5 years and out of shape he still went 3 rounds and threw way more punches.
@@Lazy_Prophet Amanda didn't lack output. In fact she needed to throw less. It is exhausting (mentally/physically) when you underestimate an opponent. I've done it (as a wrestler) and I've been on Pena's side of it. You feel them wilting so you gain strength as they lose theirs. Mental stamina is as important as physical. Vera made same point....i put this ahead of nate/leon. Because it was with more on line and it slowly built to a climax. Whereas Nate/Leon turned on ! definitive strike....This was more Robbie/Rory like to me. where 1 fighter physically broke the other by enduring more. Although , to be fair, Rory's body quit on him. It wasn't him being mentally defeated
I think part of what made the Pena fight so great was finally for the first time since the Valentina rematch, an opponent didn't fight scared against Nunes. She lost the first round but wasn't worse for wear going into the second. Nunes's opponents are so timid of her right hand that they would be beat mentally before the fight even started. Even if Nunes would have ended up winning in the midst of the back and forth brawling, it still would have shown future opponents that Nunes's striking is power based not technique based.
I really didn't see pena beating Nunes, literally in the first round Nunes dominated as usual and me and my brother was having a conversation that it's nice but i can imagine that it's frustrating after a while that you dominate everyone in your catagory and then pena came out and finished job, massive respect to her, she did a good job and I hope that Amanda doesn't go the same route as ronda, I hope she pulls it back and keeps on going
@@eatasandwich337 Peña was landing punches in the first round too if u go back and rewatch. Nunes did no damage in first round instead Julianna was defending everything well and with patience.
The wrist bone was on her windpipe, even without hooks that was a legit choke. Amanda was tired but I think that was more due to adrenaline dump because Peña was a lot tougher than she thought. I don’t blame her for tapping. Hell, we all would if our windpipe was attacked like that.
Qué lindo verlo a Chito en uno de los mejores podcasts. Se está cimentando el carbón, me alegro porque es la personificación del esfuerzo por progresar.

Neither should be in a title picture. Have one of them beat a top 5 like Dillashaw, Aldo, Sandhagen and then we'll see about a title
When Julianna speaks, she speaks with such conviction. When I first heard Peña give her side of the story and how she knew she would beat Nunes, I really believed her. Smh loved that fight and courage by Peña
Well you're the only one so, I couldn't find one person saying she even had a slight chance to win. I loved it but it screamed lack of preparation on nunes side. Complacency even
@@pic5637 Lack of preparation and looked complacent is an expert analysis? Well it's a shame nobody is paying me for them big words. That is merely an observation on an athlete who has destroyed all the former champs and has two wins over shevchenko. I didnt hear dan hardy, Joe rogan, luke thomas or the fight disciples say she even had a punchers chance. Let alone the embedded comment sections from fans. Verdict mma has it as the biggest upset in history, but yea go ahead a tell us all how you knew she'd beat her "bro". And some people think they do, but they're blind fools.
You can literally HEAR the world changing when her punches started rocking Nunes. The commentary team going crazy, the crowd screaming, it was absolutely beautiful
In previous fights, all Juliana's Weapons were close-in and medium range. But THIS time She was throwing these Long-Range BOMBS, accurately. A clear sign of improving her game...
I've been waiting for Joe to have Chito on the podcast for a few years now, this one and the episode with Kambosos were amazing. Hope to see more fighters on the podcast
I won big on Pena. I only bet on her when Mike Brown (IMO) lied about Amanda’s training in his interview with Okamoto. The fact that him and Lambert (in the countdown) had to mention her training and dedication seemed like a cover up.
Right before the fight, you see when it said someone in Vegas had placed a 338k bet on Nunes. Imagine their look of disbelief when Nunes tapped. Pena was a +650 underdog. They thought it was an easy 30k in the bag lol
Watching Chito going through the path he's on is amazing, what a journey it has been and it's far from being over. This guy is DEFINITELY gonna be a champ someday.
All I could think leading up to that L was, "Back away Nunes! Back out"! She really wasn't completely prepared to be in that situation. Happens to all the greats though.
I felt this!! The sounds of the crowd, the utter bewilderment on Amanda’s face and how when the fight ended Peña didnt realize it had ended. It was so overwhelming even as a viewer i found myself choking up!
Something about the way Amanda presented herself in the press conference gave me a feeling she was going to get humbled. It was just a feeling I had. When the whole world tells you you're invincible for so long, its no surprise you start to believe it.
When Amanda started trash talking back to Pena I knew something was up since shes not normally like that. Like she was overcompensating for a lack of confidence.
Charles didn’t grab the glove. There’s better footage showing what happened in that sequence and Dustin himself confirmed there was no glove grab. Sad to see Joe not doing his homework on it. He really should know better.
Did anyone else notice that Nunes almost had a small smirk on her face the whole time? I'm not sure if she just couldn't believe what was happening but it felt to me like she almost welcomed the defeat. Like she was bored of running through all of her opponents and she was happy to finally have someone put her in a tight spot
We need some clips from the Peter McCullough interview!! Possibly the single most important podcast ever recorded... I had been holding out on downloading Spotify, but Joe having the balls to have him on got my download 100%
I only have spotify because of Rogan. I haven't watched the whole Dr. McCullough's interview yet(I'm about 55min), but Holly Shit! That is a must watch interview, for sure!
In terms of the actual finish of the fight, Nunes did quit. Pena brought her to that point but Nunes chose to quit at the end. Pena said herself she thought the round ended not that Amanda tapped.
He also made a legit point at the end. I like Charles, but that glove grab changed everything. Glove grab to positional advantage, then all went downhill from there for Dustin. He got all his licks from the 2nd round.
@@gustasb1570 That's not what he said at all. He didn't acknowledge it because he didn't want it to sound like he was making excuses. It's not even a thing that should be debated. You can literally watch it happening in the fight.
I was recording from the stands and you can hear the disbelief in the crowd. It was a moment of cheers then some silence. Probably from those in disbelief or those who bet on Nunes lol. (At least in my section where I was sitting). Amazing.
It must have played a part. John Fury said that Tyson was fucked after covid and had barely anything in his tank but the dog in Tyson kept him in that fight
Yeah she has decent BJJ but to sort of insinuate that she's some elite fighter is a bit of a stretch she just caught Nunes on a bad night Nunes will be back, Nunes is the only fighter to successfully defend both belts, and plus Covid could've played a factor too I remember coming back to BJJ after recovering from Covid first round of free rolling I was already gassed
His fingers were not in Dustin's glove, I can't remember who broke the footage down but it clearly shows Charles holding his wrist. So you need to stop hating. Lol
Amanda made the same mistake that Cyborg and Miesha ironically did to Nunes. Ronda also did the same to Holly. They all did underestimate the opponent to lose the belt.Julianna may not be a good striker but she’s durable and isn’t afraid of getting hit by Amanda. Also she’s one of the few that wasn’t afraid of Amanda.I honestly favor Julianna over Amanda in the rematch. She has the style that Amanda Nunes historically struggles against. What we saw Saturday was how Nunes historically loses her fights. As for Amanda she needs to add heavy body strikes approach to the rematch to slow down Pena.
You are so right, which unfortunately tells a lot about level of womens MMA. I dont want to be a hater but she is/was the best ever and this was a tittle fight, not taking anyway from Pena she was badder junkyard dog at least in that fight showed real determination. But in contrast imagine JJ not even taking some fights that seriously and what level he is.
Bruh Amanda recently had covid. I don't think she underestimated her. She tired quickly which is most likely because she had covid recently. She has wrestled more in her previous fight than pena fight but she never got tired in those fight. And she wasn't active like she used to be. More like Amanda ain't as she used to be. Many people wondered if khamzat would be same after he had covid but i don't think most of the even knows Amanda having covid before this fight which is why people barely questioned or thought if she would be same or not. She just pulled out because of covid and rescheduled unlike khamzat who was out for a longer period of time than Amanda. I honestly don't think Amanda understimated her. She definetly gave her 100%. It's just that i don't think she is same as before. She also fights in 2 different division and cutting weight might also have started affecting her. Honetly she gave her 100% and pena beat her fair and square as she was better fighter. I think people were just more confident than herself and thought that she was something like a god to not question if she would be same after covid for someone who has to fight top fighter because she is champ.
@@angrymaniac53 nope. Covid might affect her lungs(shit excuse tbh heaps of other fighters performing post covid) but what about technique. Pena beating her on every jab.
I’ll be honest I was a big O’Malley fan and was trying to convince myself chito was a fraud after he whopped Sean to ease my broken, casual brain, but watching his last fights with Aldo and Edgar and seeing more interviews and now this, chito really is a fuccin G and a hell of a fighter!
Amanda's sloppy striking when she was trying to deal with Pena's pressure was perhaps the most surprising thing about the way it went down. It's one thing to be the hammer, but great fighters also have to experience being the nail. Amanda didn't like being the nail when Pena unloaded on her.
Historically Amanda has been a great hammer but rather poor nail. Early in her career she was very much a fighter who either dominated and finished early, or wilted and quit. Glimpses of it did pop up here and there (Shevchenko and GDR fights) but it had been largely eradicated on her historic run as champion. This fight showcased that that side of Amanda was still there, it just took someone with a good game-plan, brass balls and a chin to take the fight to her. Watching it unfold live I was in shock and disbelief as I never thought I'd see Amanda lose again. Having said that though, I can't help but think Amanda wasn't the same fighter that night due to how quickly her gas tank emptied when she was able to pace herself in previous fights and go the distance.
I was about to mention goggins about "taking souls" and chito mentioned him afterwards. Juliana wanted it so much she was willing to die. Champions get "lazy" if they jeep winning and they no longer go into the "fight or flight" mode that makes humans do incredible things.
Everyone is an expert after that fight. The fact that Julianna told Amanda to be ready for getting out boxed, out wrestled, and she would make her tired should end all discussion that Amanda wasn't prepared. All credit to Julianna for calling it and doing it.
Very well put, Joe. Enjoy your podcast. Nunes was a great champion and she will be back. Humble in defeat . Congrats to Julianna. You fought a beautiful fight👍
Shes still s champ in another division and I bet this makes her hold on to it tighter. She did seem like she was doing what a lot of fighters are doing nowadays, drinking their own kool-aid. Reality check.
3:15 Chito completely misinterpreted what Uncle Chael said.. To paraphrase he said "Amanda Nunes didn't just simply quit, Julianna went out there and MADE her quit!"
The way Nunez ate those jabs was beautiful to watch. Pena made the sport look beautiful. It looked like by the time Pena did the takedown at the end, Nunez was punch drunk

one of the most exciting rounds in UFC history. I have to say that Joe and DC's commentary only added to the moment as it was happening. I truly enjoy that they are unabashedly fans as well as commentators. Tx Joe. You've been an integral, if underappreciated, part of the sports growth. As much as Dana is the UFC, so are you Joe.
amanda didn’t look right…she was throwing sloppy shots and she looked really slow.
It is draining to be the agressor going full bore only to realize that you've thrown your best shots and your opponent is still there.
but i will say this. bouncing between weight classes is not easy and has hurt many fighters. Best example is Roy Junes jr

Good observation. Thank you.

Yea but what about the takedowns
You are so right, which unfortunately tells a lot about level of womens MMA. I dont want to be a hater but she is/was the best ever and this was a tittle fight, not taking anyway
from Pena she was badder junkyard dog at least in that fight showed real determination.
But in contrast imagine JJ not even taking some fights that seriously and what level he is.
she beat her on every jab bro. that makes her a good striker. now sit down.

It’s very important that not only you can dish it out but also be able to take it

Everyone is an expert after that fight. The fact that Julianna told Amanda to be ready for getting out boxed, out wrestled, and she would make her tired should end all discussion that Amanda wasn't prepared. All credit to Julianna for calling it and doing it.
