  • I needed an easier way to skive the edges of my leather without purchasing a $1k plus machine. Check out what I found! The Scharffix leather pairing device. In this video I will get it set up and walk you through how to use it. I purchased mine on Amazon:
    www.amazon.com...
I will use it more in future videos and as I learn more, give you tips from my experience with it. Until next time.....
    Happy Sewing!

Same as you, I decided to buy this simple tool. I have been running a small leather goods business the past few years and do most of my skiving with a sharp blade or various blades. Originally I bought the Amazon unit at 1/3 the price and it worked pretty well and a couple days later the Scharffix came up locally on a buy and sell app for about the same price so I bought it used.
I have had quite good success with this tool, the type of leather is a big part of the success and definitely a sharp blade. If I am building a bag, it's not uncommon to use 3-4 blades. I buy blades in bulk for this tool from Amazon or locally if I can find them. The biggest trick is to remove leather in stages. If I am reducing the edge of 5-6oz leather to 2-3oz, I typically reduce in 2-3 stages, sometimes more. I drew a line on the height adjustment knob with a sharpie so I could adjust in quarter turn increments fairly accurately. I find the best method is to angle the blade with the end facing the operator having the larger space. Then without the stop (I find it gets in the way), I eye up the leather against visual cues on the blade area, for example the screw that holds the blade. I then do all my skiving to that point of reference and slowly move toward the furthest point of the blade where it becomes the most thin. Another option is to mark a line around the perimeter of your piece and cut to that point.
For the small start spots where the tool misses, I typically rotate the leather 90 degrees and do a small cut on that corner first then rotate to the side I'm cutting and that little area goes in your right hand to advance the next cut.
I have since ordered a bell skiver because I am receiving a lot of orders, but I intend to keep this tool as I find it useful for certain details or smaller projects. I absolutely love the feeling and sound of the cut when it is cutting like butter.

Thank you so much for taking the time to post with such detail. I have had a few people ask me about this tool and I really think this will help them. I have found that I tend to purchase leathers with a very soft temper for the bags I make so I do not use it regularly. This is why I purchased the Scharffix over a bell skiver, I knew I would not use it often. Like you, it is a great tool for me when I need it and with a little practice it works great. Thank you again!!

Very few people are able to skive leather with any consistency. Even experts with decades of experience will produce uneven edges or small tear-outs on occasion. I'm too much of a perfectionist and will invest 10x the labor to avoid introducing flaws in my products. Of course, this makes my products too expensive for the common market.
The Sharffix could be greatly improved by the addition of a graduated dial. That would permit accurately setting the depth of cut to one-third of the material thickness (that being the recommended maximum depth of cut on leather for a single pass) and making precise adjustments to ensure consistency from one work piece to another.
What you said about the Chinese knock-offs is absolutely true. The knock-offs have poorly machined adjusting screws and couplings which result in play in the mechanism. The play can be reduced by adding thin washers under the screws and/or adding Teflon tape to the screw threads.

Thank you, very useful video for me, I need to buy this skive and wanted to check if it dies only belts or bigger pieces as well, so... thanks!

I ended up getting a bell skiver. This works well for veg tanned leathers but not so great for chrome tanned. They seem to stretch too much. Just an FYI.

I was very interested to find your review of the Scharffix since I have just bought one and find it stretches the upholstery type leather I use for bag making, just as you said. It is designed for book binders who use stiffer leathers. I appreciated the detailed review by one of your viewers and will persevere with their recommendations. Is there anyone who skives leather with a bell skiver for small users as a business? I live in the UK

I found the skiver that you have purchased would stretch the leather to much.Maybe I was doing it wrong. Now I have a bell skiver and I love it.

I agree. For chrome tanned leather, it stretches. It doesn’t seem too bad with veg tanned. I seem to be using more chrome tanned so I am thinking about a bell skiver too. Where did you get yours? What kind did you get? How much space does it take up?

@@simplyclassic I am in Australia so it was harder to get one.The company that I bought my industrial machines from got one for me.They hadn’t had them before.Im not sure what brand it is because they put there company name on it but I think there all pretty much the same thing. It’s on a 1200cm table. Its made sewing leather so much better I couldn’t believe the difference.🙂

This is really cool! I've only seen the hand tool/bell skiver/dremel skiver that makes a huge mess. What do you think about wearing like a protective glove or something on your left hand? I kept saying "be careful"! To you through the screen, even though you couldn't hear me. That blade looks very sharp! Thanks for another awesome video!

      Hi Suzanne,
I ended up purchasing a bell skiver. This tool stretched out the chrome tanned leathers that I use. I think it is probably okay for thicker veg tanned leathers.

    • @simplyclassic
      @simplyclassic  3 года назад

      Hi Barb!
I have been practicing some and I can skive the edges only when I use the guide that flips up from the bottom. I will keep the full roller installed to do that. There is some trial and error so I definitely practice on a scrap first, but overall it has been going pretty well.
I love hearing from you. I am going to nickname you my biggest fan 😀
