Do you have a MacBook Air or a Pro? And what year? On the Air the keyboard is connected to the trackpad and then connected to the logic board. So there possibly could be a common issue.
@@sarabpreetkaur3360 maybe water damage near the connectors on the logic board? The keyboard and trackpad connectors are next to each other. I'd take a look and maybe clean with isopropyl alcohol.

i see a few of not clicking fix, not quite what i'm looking for... a few weeks ago my trackpad won't click and drag.. i tried using both a mouse and apple's magic trackpad and it works, so the problem is definitely with the built-in trackpad.. by the way my macbook is macbook pro 13" Mid 2012 and it's still runing on catalina (apparently my mac doesn't support bigsur)
Just fixed my sisters old 2009 MBP that wouldn't register a click. Big thanks man, now she can get all of her old data off of it and we can donate it locally. Subscribed!
Thank you, soooo much. Your precise visual and audio directions were easy to follow and my husband and I successfully 'fixed' the trackpad problem with your instruction/direction. With appreciation......
Brilliant... this worked for me. Before you would literally thump the trackpad to make it work, now its back to normal. Great video, thank you for sharing your knowledge.
it worked for me! thank you so much! 😄it was hard to fix the sensibility but I finally got it for the left click, the right one is not clicking well but I changed my option so I can touch with 2 fingers instead of the right click
Thank you so much. You just made my day. I applied this repair to a 2012 Macbook Pro. It did not seem to be worn as much as yours but anyway it worked.
BEFORE DISASSEMBLY: On the trackpad back middle bottom there is a large tri-wing screw used to adjust the travel of the pad as you press to activate the button. That screw does become lose with age and many pressings of the pad. I adjusted that first to see if that would suffice to resolve the contact problem. It worked this time! I then sealed the adjusting screw with clear tape, in case it becomes lose.
Making a change to the adjustment screw works because it is putting more pressure on the button on the trackpad (giving just a little more metal-metal contact when the trackpad is depressed for a click). It doesn't take care of the underlying issue. The wear and tear on the metal contact points still exists which is why I recommend what I do in the video.
Just did this on my 2012 model and it's definitely better, but I still have trouble when holding the left click down and dragging my thumb across the track pad to highlight a whole sentence, for example. Maybe the track pad itself loses connectivity or sensitivity to touch after so many years? I'll try cleaning the surface itself and see what's up. Thanks!
I doubt it is loosing connectivity. It may be that you can change the adjustment screw a little. Does it do the same thing when you press really hard on that middle lower spot on the trackpad while trying to highlight? If it works better then you may need to redo the procedure and/or fix the adjustment screw to get more pressure on that spot so it can more easily register a "click". And cleaning it can't hurt, just don't use water. Use IPA.
Where is the adjustment screw? Probably shouldn't have closed everything up until I fully tested it. The more I play with it, there really isn't much better of click in the center and the highlighting is still pretty bad.
Thank you so much for this video. I have an old (Late 2008/Early 2009) MBP that still sees a fair amount of use, although the trackpad quit working a couple years ago. I had checked around on getting it fixed, and it would have cost a fortune, so I'd just been using a cheap USB Mouse. I randomly stumbled upon this video, followed it closely, and now have an MBP trackpad that works like new. Thank you!
Another successful repair here, and extremely grateful for sharing this with us. I've bought a secondhand one and the only issue was this trackpad where right click worked fine but the main left click worked occasionally but most of the time, had to be pressed really hard to register any click. I was nearly going to buy a replacement trackpad and researching the replacing procedures when I found your video by chance. It now works perfectly and saved me the extra expense!! I'm so happy thank you so much!!
Great video ! I found you after taking the cover off our MacBook Pro three times. Actually my main problem was the mouse pad, cleaned it, tried adjusting the screw for pad, but still had problems. Then I watched you remove that tape with a razor, so I got the razor out, such a small operation, lol. But after removing the tape and button to a different location and putting everything back together, then turning it back on, it worked GREAT ! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge ! You now have a new subscriber !
Awesome to hear that you got it fixed! I’m glad sharing what the underlying problem is helped you. A lot of people seem to recommend cleaning or adjusting the screw. But most times it is the wear and tear on those contact points so moving it over a little will do the trick. Tightening the adjustment screw may work (for a time) but it is not dealing with the underlying issue, the worn down contact points.
Thanks for the video! This wasn't even my issue but you were the only video I found that had a clear explanation of tools needed instead of saying "tri-wing" like that's something people routinely have...
thanks......your instructions were clear and easy to follow and you made my wife HAPPY....the repair went well and mission accomplished......and right before this she was crying out "I need a new computer"......LOL so my marriage is back on track LOL
My Macbook Aluminum 2008 wasn't working the trackpad click since 2016, i've been using the magic mouse, then, I watched your video and just tried. I have a trackpad again! :) Thank you very much!
Thank you for the great video. I have mine fixed following your instructions. One minor difference is that I did not "shift" and paste the clicker to the right. I use a pencil eraser to clean the metal rings and put the clicker right back to where it is.
Nice! The problem with mine was the gray piece itself. There was a black circle on it, like rust or something. So I scratched it with the blade and put some circuit board cleaner on it until it got all gray again. Now it's working. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for this information. I got a questions, for MacBook pro 15 2012, it will stop working in the middle of a project and sometimes go to blue screen, how do I fix that?
This is really awesome! Thank you so much, bro! Its been 5 years since my MB 2009 trackpad lost its click function. Thank you again! God bless you more!
Thank you for the video. My MacBook Pro Retina late 2013 model still allows me to click but I have to click towards the front of the pad and pretty much in the middle of the front along the edge. Elsewhere on the pad does not click and barely moves downward. Battery still functions fairly well but could it be more of a swollen battery as to why the rest of the pad is a problem?
@@FrugalRepair I haven't opened it yet but in going to System Preferences and Trackpad I discovered the tapping option instead or in addition to the clicking. So the tapping is working pretty good for now. But thanks for responding so soon!
Thank you very much.It just worked for me.I cleaned the button wit ipa and placed it at the same place. It saved me some money .Really no need to change the track pad.THANK YOU Again
Wow, thank you so much. I was really worried I had to go out and purchase a new MacBook. Repair process was truly quick and effortless, even with no experience!
@@FrugalRepair It is so much better than many many videos on RUclips. The details, without all the trying to loosen the battery and so on. I appreciate your; sound quality, picture quality, teaching ability, and clarity. Five stars.
IMPORTANT NOTE! Sometimes when the battery is old or has overheated it will expand under the track pad and consequently restrict the movement of the track pad up & down or not able to click. Once you remove the battery and see that the back of it has expanded it's time to replace that battery ASAP. New batteries arrive flat and will not restrict the clicking of the track pad. Amazon stocks a lot of them. :)
Amazing video. Does this also fix a jumpy/crazy trackpad? Since yesterday my macbook is doing its own thing with its own movements (open files, close tabs, changes pages, opens, closes etc.)
Thanks! No, unfortunately this only fixes the click not responding. For what you are experiencing, make sure there is no Bluetooth mouse somewhere connected sending an errant signal. It’s possible you have some liquid damage on the trackpad circuitry or on the connector to the logic board. I would visually inspect those.
@@FrugalRepair I'm having this problem, too. Upon inspection, would compressed air be helpful? I honestly just feel it's debris "underneath the trackpad"?
@@kissxthexdancer I don't see how that can hurt to try. But it may be the electronics that are directly under the trackpad (in the middle - above the button I showed in this video)
It just did the job! Ive got another issue with the trackpad, sometimes when dragging items, zooming, or selecting items (using 2 or 3 fingers). it won't recognize one of the fingers and the gesture will go wrong. is there a solution to this. the trackpad feels smoother in the center than it is in the corners.
Congrats on the repair! Sounds like you are experiencing a problem with the capacitive touch. You don't have another bluetooth mouse connected? (to rule that out). It could be an electronic issue or maybe needs a simple cleaning?
Thanks for the vid. Can I just add what my solution was without opening the back of my Macbook Air. Only the right click was working, no matter what I tried - even using an external mouse - it didn't work. I looked this problem up and found out that sometimes a bluetooth connected device like a magic trackpad can suddenly interfere with the trackpad on the laptop. Turned out there was a bluetooth connected apple mouse hidden in some drawer that was still switched on. I turned it off and problem solved. You can also try turning off the bluetooth on you laptop and see if that works!
I watched the video and thought it was very helpful until I read your comment and realized my issue too was only related to one side of my touchpad. And yes, I had my apple mouse in my backpacks outer pouch and it was activated. Since this is a very recent discovery, I can only hope that that was the solution, but will add another follow up comment in a few days, (hopefully) to confirm. :)
Not directly because this repair has to do with the physical click. You might have water damage or a loose cable. Also, make sure to check there isn't a wireless mouse connected somehow and that's causing it.
I am going to try this tomorrow. My girlfriends 2009 MBP have this problem. I was thinking it might be a old battery swelling up but this is a cheaper fix if this is the cause.
Guys sometimes it's just dirt and sticky food lefted while you ate something on your Mac😂, I used a piece of thick plastic bag and slowly moved it around the area and BOME it worked!!
Will try this. My MacBook also has a defective R key. I’ve removed it but there’s nothing obviously wrong with it and no dirt under it. It works if I stroke it downwards. Any idea what’s wrong?
The key could have a tear in the “cup” (or it could be dislodged from the base), it’s under the key itself. You could have liquid damage that has affected the keyboard.
This worked. Although I think it was the cleaning, I did not see any wear. The click is a bit hard on mine. Not excessively so, it works fine, but I would like to apply less pressure. So I would like to know how if the screw for the depth of the click makes influences the pressure to apply or just when the contact occures.
Hey Mr. Reese just wanted to tell you that you save my life. thank you so much for this video, I was about to cry I have some editing to do for my client and things happen that my trackpad wont function, but with you quick tutorial everything back to normal..thank u thank u so much😊😊😊
You are wonderful. ❣️ Trackpad is cracked from MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015) falling off the car. It STILL WORKS fine. Can I still just use the first part of the video to replace the trackpad? If yes, where should I purchase the trackpad?
The 2015 trackpad is different because it uses force touch. Unfortunately, I think you may need to remove the glued in battery to get to the trackpad. =(
@@FrugalRepair So the battery is glued in instead of popping out as your video showed? If yes, is it hard to remove the glued in battery? Do you have any videos that show a glued in battery? Last question, if the trackpad is working perfectly (wish I could post a picture here of the crack), do you anticipate any damage I would do if continuing to use it in its cracked condition? Thank you so much for your help. 🙏

Hi Frugal, I followed your instructions and managed to fix my laptop. I have subscribed to your channel and I hope you'll continue to make more videos and help people. I wish you well and thanks for your videos.
Thank you for this video. It helped me to make my old MacBook Pro work better again. A few months later it stopped working and was real hard to press on. I went to a local repair place and they showed me the battery was expanding and causing the track pad to not work. I replaced the battery and it is working again.
Thank you for the tutorial. I have some precision screwdrivers and have managed to get all of the screws out except the ones on the tracking pad itself. They're so tiny. Do you know what size I need?
I have a MacBook Pro 2013 and began to repair, but the trackpad was unable to be easily removed without prying off - there were no screws as shown in the laptops you worked on. However in my case, I found that if I pressed a P6 pentalobe driver into the sealed screw found into the small opening near the center of it, it separated the pad from the contacts and now the trackpad has been fully functional ever since. Note also that in my case it wasn’t warn switch contact pads which were the problem, but was just worn-in spring action of the switch (so pressing on it from the back-side where the P6 pentalobe sealed screw was separated or “stretched out” that spring action back to its normal larger amplitude
Hey I have a Mac book air and the mousepad is jammed like I can’t push down I opened it up but I have no clue what to do. Do you have any tips please and thank you!
This is a fantastic tutorial. But my problem isn't the button, but the tracking of the trackpad itself. I spilled some water on the trackpad and now it doesn't register the movements of my finger on the pad properly. The cursor is sluggish when I try to move it, and it often moves erratically even when I'm not touching the trackpad. It's been like this for a few days now. Is it likely possible to fix it without buying a new trackpad?
You never know with water damage. You’ll want to open it up and clean the connector and other electronics on the trackpad with isopropyl alcohol (use an old toothbrush ). You may not be able to save the trackpad. Hopefully nothing broke on your logic board.
You could file a channel on top of the screw and use a flat head screwdriver. You could try different star bits, maybe one would work. Or you could even just break the plastic tab.
Ahhhh! I got sent a new track pad and I thought something was missing! Thanks for showing how the button works after checking out the part I was sent I realised it was correct all along!
Thank you! No, the capacitive touch is separate from the button click. This repair only deals with the click becoming functional again. You may have a problem with the electronics on the underside of the trackpad. Or it could be software, etc. I would at least try cleaning it with isopropyl alcohol as a first step.

Thanks a lot! I recently got a 2009 MacBook Pro 13" for free (it's going to be my 3 year old son's first computer) and it had this problem. I was able to repair it with no problems.
Thank you so much for this video! I bought a trackpad replacement which did not even work then I found your video and the old one is behaving as good as new.
After reading the comments, I read that some people were just pushing down on the trackpad and putting alcohol along the edge and dried on cool with a hair dryer. It worked!!!! I am so happy! No need to take it apart for me. (My spill was not big, only a few drops)
Hello! A question: on my Macbook Pro 2012, the trackpad has a problem -- when I click and drag, the cursor will "let go" mid-way. For example, when I click on a document or a photo on the desktop and drag it to another spot, it will stop half way. Do you think I need to replace the trackpad, or is this a problem that can be cleared up by doing what you demonstrated in this video? Thank you.
It sounds like it’s a problem with the capacitive touch. There’s a little circuit board on the bottom of the trackpad that you may be able to replace to deal with that. But getting a new trackpad sounds like it would definitely solve the problem. That is, as long as the problem is not on the logic board, but it doesn’t sound like it.

Thank you!
That is great to hear! Congratulations on fixing it.
Hi you mentioned the pressure/depth adjustment screw for the clicker set but which way do you turn and how much?
Another successful repair here, and extremely grateful for sharing this with us.
I've bought a secondhand one and the only issue was this trackpad where right click worked fine but the main left click worked occasionally but most of the time, had to be pressed really hard to register any click.
I was nearly going to buy a replacement trackpad and researching the replacing procedures when I found your video by chance. It now works perfectly and saved me the extra expense!! I'm so happy thank you so much!!
Congratulations!
Many thanks , i fixed my trackpad click after watching your tutorial . great well done .
Great to hear that you got yours fixed!
Glad I could help!
thanks......your instructions were clear and easy to follow and you made my wife HAPPY....the repair went well and mission accomplished......and right before this she was crying out "I need a new computer"......LOL so my marriage is back on track LOL
Congrats on the repair! Thanks for letting me know.
I clicked the like button in the first 20 seconds. Thanks for speaking clearly without the extra jubberish.
Thanks!
This fixed my 2009 macbook pro trackpad. Drag and drop works again. Thanks!
Awesome! Love to hear you fixed it.
My Macbook Aluminum 2008 wasn't working the trackpad click since 2016, i've been using the magic mouse, then, I watched your video and just tried. I have a trackpad again! :) Thank you very much!
Congratulations on the repair!
Thank you for the great video. I have mine fixed following your instructions. One minor difference is that I did not "shift" and paste the clicker to the right. I use a pencil eraser to clean the metal rings and put the clicker right back to where it is.
Awesome to hear! Thanks for posting and letting us know.
Nice! The problem with mine was the gray piece itself. There was a black circle on it, like rust or something. So I scratched it with the blade and put some circuit board cleaner on it until it got all gray again. Now it's working. Thanks for the video!
Thanks! Great to hear you figured it out and got it working again!
I've just finished my repair. You are awsome! It was my second trackpad and still not working ok. Your fix did the job. Thx a lot
Great to hear that you fixed it!
Thanks for this information. I got a questions, for MacBook pro 15 2012, it will stop working in the middle of a project and sometimes go to blue screen, how do I fix that?
I wish I could help you but there’s a bunch of things that could be wrong. I would first try to eliminate the hard drive cable as the culprit.
This is really awesome! Thank you so much, bro! Its been 5 years since my MB 2009 trackpad lost its click function. Thank you again! God bless you more!
Thanks! Congratulations on getting it repaired. I figured this out after replacing so many whole trackpads. Happy to share the info.
just repaired my macbook pro 13" mid 2012 thanks to your video! great tip, cheers!
Thank you for taking the time to post this clip. I followed the instructions and it worked perfectly.
That is so great to hear! Congratulations on the repair.
Your hands are as stable as a surgeon. Well done chap!! my very best to you..
Thank you!
You saved me a lot thank you sir!! I was gonna get the new part but hey, trackpad works like a new!
I’m so happy to hear! Great job!
It could be a swelling battery. Those are glued in so it’s a pain to get out. Did you open it up to take a look?
@@FrugalRepair I haven't opened it yet but in going to System Preferences and Trackpad I discovered the tapping option instead or in addition to the clicking. So the tapping is working pretty good for now. But thanks for responding so soon!
fixed my 2011 macbook with this tip, great stuff
Awesome to hear!
Thank you very much.It just worked for me.I cleaned the button wit ipa and placed it at the same place. It saved me some money .Really no need to change the track pad.THANK YOU Again
That is awesome to hear!
Wow, thank you so much. I was really worried I had to go out and purchase a new MacBook. Repair process was truly quick and effortless, even with no experience!
So great to hear!
I followed your video and was able to get my track pad working again. Thanks for the detailed instructions!
Congratulations!
Thank you! Thru your method i managed to fix my Late 2008 Macbook trackpad! But mine was working normally after 3 days disconnected
Glad you got it working!
BEST video. Got it. The guy is such a great teacher. 10X better than the other videos
So glad to hear the video helped! One reason I made this video is that many others weren’t getting to the underlying problem.
@@FrugalRepair It is so much better than many many videos on RUclips. The details, without all the trying to loosen the battery and so on. I appreciate your; sound quality, picture quality, teaching ability, and clarity. Five stars.
Wow, thank you for your encouraging words!
Very clever repair and teaching of underlying causes.
Thank you!
Excellent video, any tips on how to fix a trackpad for a macbook pro 13inch 2014-105?
IMPORTANT NOTE! Sometimes when the battery is old or has overheated it will expand under the track pad and consequently restrict the movement of the track pad up & down or not able to click. Once you remove the battery and see that the back of it has expanded it's time to replace that battery ASAP. New batteries arrive flat and will not restrict the clicking of the track pad. Amazon stocks a lot of them. :)
This is a handy tip to keep in mind, thanks for pointing this out.
Thanks for making this video. I was able to give this video a thumbs up now that my trackpad clicker is working again.
That is so great to hear you fixed it! Congrats.
Excellent and to the point. Fixed my trackpad! Woot! (2012 MacBook Pro pre-retina)
Awesome!
PERFECT! Once you explained how the touchpad mechanism works, all I did was press it hard a few times and it started working again!
Awesome! Congratulations.
Thanks for your comment! Yes, a hidden bluetooth mouse can get you. Great to hear you figured it out!
hi, i think what happens with mine is that the buton doesent make the click, do you know if i need to buy a new one?
I couldn’t concentrate because you remind me so much of Fred Armisen and that my friend, is a big compliment
Thanks! You’ll have to introduce me to him.
@@FrugalRepair check out “Portlandia”! He’s in that and he’s pretty funny in that.
Will this repair work for a "dancing" cursor - a cursor moving around the screen like crazy? Is this a button issue? Many thank!
Not directly because this repair has to do with the physical click. You might have water damage or a loose cable. Also, make sure to check there isn't a wireless mouse connected somehow and that's causing it.
@@FrugalRepair THANKS!!!
I am going to try this tomorrow. My girlfriends 2009 MBP have this problem. I was thinking it might be a old battery swelling up but this is a cheaper fix if this is the cause.
Did it work? (as i click furiously) About to try this on two macbooks right now. Does this guy have a patrion page?
I remember the old swollen battery problem. I don't think the newer models do that so much.
@@darkbeach72 Actually had to have my 2016 MBP serviced for a swollen battery.
The kitchen magnet tip is genius. Thank you.
So happy you liked it!
Guys sometimes it's just dirt and sticky food lefted while you ate something on your Mac😂, I used a piece of thick plastic bag and slowly moved it around the area and BOME it worked!!
Thank you so much for this! Do I really need to buy the headset or should I be okay?
Depends on your eyesight. =) You could get reading glasses at the dollar store too for a little magnification.
Thanks so much for this video. My trackpad was requiring a lot of force to click, and this was a simple and effective fix! Thanks!!
That is great to hear! Congrats for getting it repaired!
what i did was blowing into and it worked (not only one time)
Did it make the "click" sound before? Mine doesn't seem to make and I do need a lot of force to click too! I need to try this.
You are amazing .It works for my 2010 mbp trackpad.
That’s great to hear!
Great vid- saved me having to get a new trackpad and you have a wonderful way of explaining stuff !!
Thanks so much for your kind comment! Congratulations on the repair!
Omg omg it worked save me some money. You’re awesome
So great to hear!
You mentioned a way to change the depth of the click. Can you tell me more please?
There is a screw the button sits on that is adjustable. Turn it to the desired height
THANKSSSSS!!!!! YOU SAVED ME TO SPEND A LOT OF MONEEEEY!
Thanks! Congratulations on the repair.
Yeah $15 for a new one on aliexpress.
Was planning to buy replacement, but thanks to this tutorial. Works!
Great to hear you fixed yours!
This worked. Although I think it was the cleaning, I did not see any wear.
The click is a bit hard on mine. Not excessively so, it works fine, but I would like to apply less pressure. So I would like to know how if the screw for the depth of the click makes influences the pressure to apply or just when the contact occures.
Hi can I use this tutorial in my case ... I can click but after clicing I can't select or move folder or text , Thanks .
Water damage? Probably another problem with the trackpad
Hey Mr. Reese just wanted to tell you that you save my life. thank you so much for this video, I was about to cry I have some editing to do for my client and things happen that my trackpad wont function, but with you quick tutorial everything back to normal..thank u thank u so much😊😊😊
Thank you for sharing! That is encouraging to hear. So glad you gave new life to your trackpad. Great job!
Thank you sooooooo much!!!!!! I followed your video step by step and my MacBook Pro is fixed!!!!
I needed to replace battery because I had a bulging battery and I also fixed my trackpad!
Congratulations on the repair!
Hi Frugal,
I followed your instructions and managed to fix my laptop. I have subscribed to your channel and I hope you'll continue to make more videos and help people. I wish you well and thanks for your videos.
Congratulations! Thanks for subscribing.
Thanks, very useful ! I was going to order a new trackpad, but now it's fixed. Saved me 30 bucks.
Great job! Thanks for posting.
My piece didn’t look like yours but I just moved the button to the center, and WORKED! Thanks
So great to hear! I'm glad you fixed your trackpad. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the video. Could this also happen if the track pad is still clicking and there is no response?
Maybe I’m missing what you are asking but isn’t that the symptom this video is solving?
Glad to hear you figured it out!
Thank you Sir.
I've open up the back cover but got stuck with one screw of the battery even though I have all the bits
Do you mean that you can’t unscrew the screw to get the battery out? It usually is a Y bit
@@FrugalRepair Sorry and thank you for your quick feedback.
Yes I can't unscrew the second screw by the battery
You could file a channel on top of the screw and use a flat head screwdriver. You could try different star bits, maybe one would work. Or you could even just break the plastic tab.
@@FrugalRepair ok thanks
Hello! Can you Please tell me what type of triwing youre using? Is it 2x100mm?
Ahhhh! I got sent a new track pad and I thought something was missing! Thanks for showing how the button works after checking out the part I was sent I realised it was correct all along!
Great video......so my pointer is not moving smoothly, will this help by fixing the button?
That’s great to hear! Congratulations on the repair.
Thank you so much for this video! I bought a trackpad replacement which did not even work then I found your video and the old one is behaving as good as new.
Thanks! That is great to hear you fixed it!
@@FrugalRepair Thank you SOOOO much for your speedy reply, so kind of you. I'll take it in to a shop here in Paris and get an estimate, I think it shouldn't cost that much. I can also get a new trackpad from ifixit, it's not that expensive. Very much appreciate your help. Cheers.
