Loved watching the black and white and now the color. This took me back to the 1980s. I had a neighbor who was an artist and owned a gallery and frame shop. We marbled paper and I remember we needed alum to coat the paper because I had to research how to make it at the library. She had the paints and water set up when I got there, so I am not sure what she added to the paint. We were making large sheets of paper that required two people to lift. I remember we used a stick that had several nails or wire in the stick so we could move it through the paint to make designs. We also were making handmade paper at the time, but I don't remember if we marbled the handmade paper. Thanks for reminding of a special time.
I wonder if Jane Davenport mermaid pens would work in water like this. The papers and technique are absolutely stunning. Thanks for sharing how to create Catherine.
Sounds like you have these pens? I would love to hear if they work for you. This process is very tricky, so it takes a lot of experimenting to find ink that works. The marbling ink that I'm using here so far works the most consistently for me. Please let me know if you try the mermaid pens!
@Catherine Rains they coloured the water but did not make patterns . I belive it was because I did not add rubbing alcohol or Dawn dish soap. Is the rubbing alcohol and Dawn what you mean by surfactant?
@@diannelacourciere4129 Soap can be used as a surfactant, but it doesn't always work. Alcohol can be used to create designs in the marbled water, but doesn't work to help the paint float in the first place.
The soap breaks the surface tension and that is why your ink was sinking after you placed the soap in certain areas. It is also why you were unable to float the ink in the same areas again straight away. This is very beautiful, I really want to try this myself. I have just started creating collage papers myself. It is so freeing and I am enjoying it greatly. So happy to have found your channel. 😄
Amazing that you could figure that out without actually making any yet. Sounds like that is what is happening. I trust that you will enjoy making these too!
OMG ! My brain can't keep up with all these techniques .. You explained this so well and love how magic is made . I have a lot of acrylic inks so am going to experiment with them ...not enough hours in my day .
The acrylic inks are hit and miss in terms of working. You definitely need photo flo for these, and each one will take a different amount. Takes a bit of experimenting. Using the ink in the marbling kit is much easier.
holy hanna WOW. Sooooo pretty. Wow. I cannot thank you enough for showing this process. Totally going to try this. I was wondering about a container size that would be just larger than the paper size. Guess I will have to try this myself though. Thank you
So happy that you are inspired to try this yourself. I'm using a scrapbook paper box from the craft store. Its about 13x13, and I took off the lid. Enjoy!
Totally fascinating - can't wait to try this - another great demo! My Photo -flo has already arrived, but I just ordered some of the handmade paper, the water vat (mine's kinda big), and two boxes of the Sumiundo Marbling inks. Fyi, the marbling ink link is goofy. (it's partially combined with Linseed Oil) Oh! Also - I can't wait for your new workshop to come out, sounds wonderful, I love to make things for friends and family.
Yipppeee, sounds like you are all set. Can't wait to see what you create with these goodies. Thanks for letting me know about the ink link, I'll go fix it now!
Yeah, you will love them. I tried lots of paint to get this to work, and although some inks worked, nothing as easy as the marbling ink that I've linked. Enjoy!
I'm definitely going to try that this week... my question is: when do you dip your brush in the soapy water? I saw you doing it in the first part of the video with the 3 dots paper and in the 3rd part... but in between min.: 11:40 and 18:40 do you use your soapy water again? TIA
@@catrains.artist Thanks a lot for your reply and editing of the video... I just tried this beautiful artwork and it worked for only one sheet... never worked again! I'll try again tomorrow whith my grandsons... I really hope it works...

You make just amazing paper but i know that i could not afford them plus shipping abroad. I hope better say I pray that you maybe made a packages with your smaller peaces, offcuts. Here i struggle just to find rice paper, prices of stencils and stamps for jeli plate are just wish that will not com true just jet
So sorry that art supplies are so expensive where you are. Not sure if I'll sell my papers, but I'm considering the possibility later this year, after I release two online workshops.

How lovely that this video triggered such a beloved art memory. Thanks so much for sharing it with all of us!
I bought the marbling kit and put it away because I felt overwhelmed, lol! Thanks for showing this, now I can’t wait.
Hope that you have a blast doing these papers!

This was amazing to watch! I’ve always wanted to marbelize paper and here you are. Thank you so so much for the lesson!🙏🏻💗💗💗
So glad to hear that this demo was useful to you! I absolutely LOVE creating these stunning papers. Enjoy!
I’ve used liquid starch for marbling with paints it may work with the ink as well. It’s cheap

Thanks for watching!
Love this! It looks like so much fun!
They are! Definitely one of my favorites!
Great video. Thank you! Where do you get the floating dots? ❤
They come with the ink set linked under "show more" in the video description. Highly recommend the ink to make this work fast!
What type of paint are you using in the larger squirt bottles? Like the blue that you used over the black and white print? Thanks!
I'm using Nova acrylic paint in the larger condiment bottle. The smaller bottles contain marbling paint, which is linked under the lesson.

I edited out the part of re-dipping my brush into the soap water over and over. I dipped it alot, for every ring that had white.

So it was just water in the vat ..no kodack 200 as in the first video ?
Neither Part 1 or Part 2 had anything in the water. The photo flo only went into the sumi ink in part 1, just a few drops.
