“The most insidious thing in the world is nonsense that sounds just plausible enough to listen to” An apt statement for UK & US politics at the moment....
You can Invisible Stalker (or any unblockable), attack, remain unblocked, and then become Dreadnought before damage is done for a 12/12 unblockable. The best part of Lazav is the instant speed nature of his ability. You can take so many "time based" triggers that might be downsides and just say "nah, that never happened." And if he is getting targeted? 1-Mana Hexproof creature. Board wipe? Bounce effect. As long as you have mana, there are no limits to what he can do as long as its playable in the Dimir colors.
I almost got the same outfit for my preview card! If I had made that faux pas at my first spoiler season I don’t think I’d be able to look at myself in dimir.
I brewed a little before watching this, and I'm still convinced of the following cards being staples in a budget list: - Thran Turbine: 2 mana at the beginning of your upkeep toward Lazav's activation for 1 mana is absolutely a godsend. - Jace's Erasure: Target yourself. You clearly don't need to put in Search for Azcanta when you aren't aiming to use the flip. - Pteramander: Need Lazav a little bigger midgame and got a yard? Pay a couple mana for 4 +1/+1 counters and some evasion. I took down my tappedout list but it seems to me like these are all-stars in Lazav, the Multifarious, though I do go a more direct way with it.
Seems interesting but i think that i would like this card in the 99. This deck would be hosed by simple graveyard hate like bojuka bog. Sure trickbind can be useful and recurible if you isochron sceptor it but in a lands matter build lind windgrace bojuka bog is recurible. And artifact destruction is plenty. I would run spells like Sadistic Sacrament and Preators grasp to remove threats from your opponents deck that hate on graveyards before they are a thing. Those cards do very dimir things.
The cool thing about this particular deck is that, outside of Phyrexian Dreadnought, you can just play the creatures to the Battlefield. If your opponent is busy trying to hose your graveyard you can just beat down with the creatures.
Yea, but the deck can get the cards in there quite easily with the cards from 9:40 and you can also replace the Stalker with any other unblockable creature. With Training Grounds and Heartstone you can go down to 5 mana and in my opinion even 8 mana is a good price to kill a player.
You made the new Lazav look amazing, I still prefer my old one and it's personal deck idea but the new one certainly has its merits that I can most assuredly appreciate it! Great video prof!
I love this deck build it's so cunning and underhanded. I built the Zo-Zou deck you covered and it is wonderful, I look forward to playing with this deck as well
You are the only spoiler person I make sure gets my like and view when you get your spoiler. I also make sure to watch the ad, the most important part!! :)
WELL WORTH THE READ! Nice little combo to do is to shove a Palinchron into this deck with Mnemonic Betrayal and play both after you have something on the field like Caged Sun (There may be a better card for it than this but this is just the one that came to mind after Crypt Ghast which would have been better but it has white in it). So after you have your mana doubler (whatever that is) out, drop Palinchron (Also if you use Caged Sun it might be better to choose blue over black), return it, repeat until you have "infinite mana" then just do whatever you want for that turn besides casting Mnemonic Betrayal and casting every creature, instant, sorcery, enchantment, or artifact in every other players graveyard. You could have a real nutty board just filled with answers to everything you need or draw you cards for this turn from other blue decks or pump your creatures for anything you need. And remember, any of the cards you draw, you did summon Palinchron over and over so any cards you draw feel free to play cause you have infinite mana. Also super helpful if somebody has a Comet Storm in their graveyard or something of the like. Congrats! You just won in 1 turn if so! But it sets up a strong board with any enchantments, creatures, and artifacts you need and enough instants and sorcerys card to get rid of enemy boards/hands and draw you a new hand if you don't just flat out win off of a Comet Storm or something.
This is a great deck, but the decklist is outdated (and Search of Azcanta is missing!). I updated the list with some newer cards. Deck list here: tappedout.net/mtg-decks/lazav-edh-updated-based-on-tolarianbennie-smith/#c3679775
Alexandre Boutaud Valarini the purpose of level up i think is the counters go on Lazav so if lazav has 4 level up counters. He can switch to another card and still have 4 counters (does thatLe sense?)
You've gotten so much better at these deck techs. You slipped into not explaining the land cards at the end though 9/10 would tutor for one of your videos again.
Dunerider Outlaw is a great addition if you plan on using some unblockable creature to get Lazav through. Mortus Strider is a great anti-wrath creature to tack into your deck in order to make Lazav even worse. Heartstone is a card you should tack on the side of Training Grounds as it's pretty close, and that extra mana is worth it especially if you haven't drawn into Grounds yet.
Okay, trying to digest the decklist. The concept of this deck reminds me a lot of Night March from Pokemon. A deck I absolutely was in love with. As a result of my experience playing that deck, I love the inclusion of Jace's Archivist and I want more. For me Windfall is an instant pick. I would also prioritize cards which do a good imitation of Windfall such as Whispering Madness, Ancient Excavation, and Read the Runes. These cards also synergy better with having a few more lands than normal. Though, I don't see any harm in removing a few basics and weaker lands (Not really a fan of Esper Panorama here) in favor of having a few more cycle lands. Maybe with both of these changes you could add even more lands to the deck, but I'm not quite sure what you would even could cut from the spells. I'm still digesting the list as a whole. (I haven't figured out why Mindshrieker is in the list...) Though, I do feel confident these draw engine choices would be even better than Merfolk Looter (Hey, if we are copying we want to copy Jace's instead) and potentially outclass Corpse Connoisseur as discard fodder. Dependent upon the local meta, I also am a fan of Breathstealer's Crypt. That's just going to hose other players more than us, and with all the graveyard interactions I feel like our plays are going to be pretty open information so this gives us a chance to see what's coming. Maybe it even replaces Search for Azcanta.
Been binge watching your commander tech videos lately. I have three commanders that I generally play, and one more that's niche, and you don't have a video for any of them! (you have made videos for commanders with the same colors as a couple though.) I'd love to see your take on a Kaalia of the Vast, Oloro Ageless Ascetic, or Xenagos, God of Revels. My group also recently made $50 budget decks and I made a Tiana, Ship's Caretaker deck, (worldslayer and then getting all the auras and equipments back!) I'd dig a video on any of these commanders. Love the channel. You rock.
I know I am a month late of when you posted the vid, but I've been binge watching this vids, because of my nostalgic love of playing commander. Because of them I am finally ready to return to magic. I am even going to this next set pre release(Ironic since I started playing the first time because of ravnica). I just wanted to thank you so kindly for reginiting my passion for this game. If you are still taking requests I'd love a commander build for Kruphix, God of Horizons. Thanks for all the entertainment man.
I think Yahenni would be a good fit in this deck. Haste and the ability to protect themself while also being able to grow larger could be real good for Lazav.
This content is fantastic, I love it. While I have no sway in your content creation, I think I speak for some of us when I ask "where's the pauper goodness at?" You got me into pauper Prof. I would be happy with common meta decks you review and give some advice on how to pilot creatively or even add your own twist to them. Again, let me stress that I love your content, the antics are entertaining, your insights are brilliant and the production is top tier. I am heavily biased towards pauper and you were a sort of turning point that got me deeper into it. I have used two of your pauper decks at my LGS in a pauper throw-down and I dominated.
Phage the untouchable! Especially with an unblockable creature like invisible stalker, it's '9 mana: kill a player' on a stick, 5 mana with training grounds
Permission to eventually turn your dimir tolarian Community College title card into an actual playmat? I'm not joking. I'm asking out of respect for you professor.
Why can't I like these awesome themed video's more then once? It is preposterous! An outrage! Also that scary looking guy in the robes looks familiar....
Looks good. I put together a list for the new(and ignoring the mistake of the first one, only) Emmara, that's a GW Soldier. Using G cards to ramp(something White tends to have an issue with), cost reduction for all my creatures(not just soldiers), untap effects to abuse some of the "tap to do something effects", repeatable artifact/enchantment removal, some control effects, means to cheat creatures into play, some life gain & Trample. For White, it's most of the basic Soldier stuff, though I left out some that seemed a bit too redundant. I also added some Angel production to deal with flyers, and more life gain to really benefit from taking damage with Darien out.
And with Helm of the Host, cloning Emmara, Darien, Auriok Steelshaper(which is kind of just a jank combo piece alongside the Bloodforged Battle-Axe and Primal Rage), really snowball out of hand.
I feel like I'd want to add a shuffle to Your graveyard into the library effect into this. I know adding something like that is kinda against the point of a deck that requires the graveyard. But at the same time were also taking about the potential to scoot past exile graveyard effects too.
Diplomatic escort would go great in this deck, the cost to counter a spell or ability being discard a card serves as a way to get cards in your graveyard and provides protection/evasion and is even a creature so Lazav can copy it in the graveyard
Bloodlinekeeper is a bit expensive, so a Budget way to generate infinite +1/+1 counters is to have crackdown construct and ornithopter in the graveyard. Then have Lazav transform into crackdown construct. Put as many transformationtriggers onto the stack as you want since Ornithopter is free. Then watch the +1/+1 counter pile in.
I bought a guilds of ravnica pack yesterday and got Lazav the multifarious out of the pack I’m so happy I got him I going to build a deck and add him as my commander
Insideous Dreams and Unfullfilled desires are favorites of mine that work great here. I am also going to run Archfiend of Ifnir for extra value from my looting.
Soratami Seer, Whispering Madness, Windfall etc. is where I would start with Lazav. He gets to play Gush magic with GY based interactions. Classic. Also worth noting- Dr. Teeth (Psychatog)
Not a creature, but Tortured Existence would be amazing in this deck. Not only does it protect key creatures, but it also lets you replay them for later use.
Did you finally get a good preview card? Something smells fishy. Did you sellout shill or did you just apply some... leverage in your surveillance of WotC?
Saskia the unyielding's edhrec deck is a great commander when altered to fit Kalia the vast attacking multiple times & using Razaketh to get the preferred cards for a combo double it up with some zacama primal calamity denial action and boom
Now, I have a potentially better idea for this guy. I built a variant of your Kraj deck and it has become by far my favourite deck to play, and I have been eyeing The Mimeoplasm for the same kinda of potential. This is the card our memey-oozelord needs to put that into fruition. You can truly have him become the *secret* commander of that deck and only pull him out once you are ready to unleash your master plan. Will go into brewmaster mode and come back to find the deck, I promise.
This card is great. I'm going to put this new Lazav in my 5 color edh deck. I was considering putting the old Lazav in but now there's a two drop I can use instead.
The original Lazav is one of my favorite cards, and I like this one sooo much better. Istant must have Foil. Also Congrats to the Professor on getting a good preview card.
You say that you wouldn't run that much self mill, but I can't help but think of how fun it would be to hit myself with Traumatize with Lazav in play...
Don't forget our dear friend Mirror-Mad Phantasm; since Lazav's name is not Mirror-Mad Phantasm, when you activate the ability your whole deck hits the grave. From there you can do the standard Narcomoeba, Fatestitcher, Gravecrawler; sac to Dread Return to grab Labman, and win with Deep Analysis or really any draw spell.
“The most insidious thing in the world is nonsense that sounds just plausible enough to listen to”
An apt statement for UK & US politics at the moment....
Brightroar and religion.
Dimir will save us all!
It's more of an apt statement for politics and public opinion at all times in history.
Ravnica did feel like the quotes were actually good. The guilds all felt like very genuine, timeless and unbiased social commentary.
You’re right, Democrats are ridiculous now. All brainwashed.
And as long as your playgroup doesn't have a good Graveyard hate setup.
I almost got the same outfit for my preview card! If I had made that faux pas at my first spoiler season I don’t think I’d be able to look at myself in dimir.

The original Lazav was one of my favorite cards when I started, and this version definitely does not dissapoint.
I wish he got to keep the Hexproof :(
I actually like old Lazav, particularly not having to pay the mana cost!
I love this channel he is the reason I went to my first draft and got into this game in the first place
I brewed a little before watching this, and I'm still convinced of the following cards being staples in a budget list:

Fun, but needs both in the graveyard and 8 mana.
Yea, but the deck can get the cards in there quite easily with the cards from 9:40 and you can also replace the Stalker with any other unblockable creature. With Training Grounds and Heartstone you can go down to 5 mana and in my opinion even 8 mana is a good price to kill a player.

Finnally a dimir commander i can spam.

Why does everyone underestimate Sygg, River Cutthroat. He has been one of my favorite commanders since I began playing...
At first I was like 'wtf river cutthroats not that good' and then I checked the Oracle text and was like 'EVERY upkeep. Nvm that's pretty solid'

Been looking for a EDH deck to build. This is it.
This is a great deck, but the decklist is outdated (and Search of Azcanta is missing!).
I updated the list with some newer cards. Deck list here:
tappedout.net/mtg-decks/lazav-edh-updated-based-on-tolarianbennie-smith/#c3679775
Minor error: Training Grounds does not affect the level-up cost of Lighthouse Chronologist.
Exactly! I was about to write it. Or maybe we are missing some hidden, high-level, dimir-secret mechanic? ;)
But didn't he said, that level up counter works for every card?
So leveling the one, where you get the discount, then switch to the "extra turn" one
Alexandre Boutaud Valarini the purpose of level up i think is the counters go on Lazav so if lazav has 4 level up counters.
He can switch to another card and still have 4 counters (does thatLe sense?)

This card is great. I'm going to put this new Lazav in my 5 color edh deck. I was considering putting the old Lazav in but now there's a two drop I can use instead.
Did anybody catch that reference to our young generation “sick” I love it Good one professor
The original Lazav is one of my favorite cards, and I like this one sooo much better. Istant must have Foil. Also Congrats to the Professor on getting a good preview card.
I kind of want to add Necrotic Ooze, Bloodline Keeper and Lazav, the Multifarious to my Phenax deck now.
I love these theme videos!
Notion thief would be one of the cards, so I can steal my opponents draw step for my own and see if I could have something useful for myself.
This looks really exciting. I love Dimir.
I want this deck, this seems supper fun!
Seems like a really fun deck to builds and play!
i tab back into the video and i see prof with a blanket over his face lmao 0:08
thank you very much Professor!
Really want to see your take on a Momir Vig deck. Personal favourite of mine and always looking for ways to improve the deck
You say that you wouldn't run that much self mill, but I can't help but think of how fun it would be to hit myself with Traumatize with Lazav in play...
It helped me a lot for my dimir commander deck thanks a lot
Don't forget our dear friend Mirror-Mad Phantasm; since Lazav's name is not Mirror-Mad Phantasm, when you activate the ability your whole deck hits the grave. From there you can do the standard Narcomoeba, Fatestitcher, Gravecrawler; sac to Dread Return to grab Labman, and win with Deep Analysis or really any draw spell.
Really thinking of building around this guy, Ive been playing xenagos for a while now so it might be a nice change of pace.
