Bought my Sub in Hong Kong in 1973 for $215. Fortunately it was not counterfeit and even more fortunately it was a “red” 1680, service cats are astronomical but it rarely needs it, so maybe averages $100 a year or so. For insurance my jeweler last appraised it at $25k, but I wear it every day and still dive with it. A great watch that served a lifetime with elegance and practicality, and hopefully will do the same for my son.
I purchased a Tudor Oysterdate at the base PX back in '72 for $110. The blue dial and bezel are very faded from thousands of hours in the sun but it's still my favorite. Back then I was a naive young kid but knowing what I know now, I wish I would have bought a case of them.
I bought my Submariner in 1970 when I was in the USMC. Sold it a couple of years ago for 5x the purchase price. Beautiful watch. Prestigious. Got lots of positive attention. Kept lousy time. Bracelet opened several times at most inopportune moments...(fingertip saves!). Required EXPENSIVE service every five years or so (I wore it constantly... combat, law enforcement, frequent diving, mountain climbing, skiing, dinner, church... you get the idea.) For a bullet proof, reliable, reasonably priced dive watch, go Seiko. Currently wearing a 200 M Kinetic with a heavy NATO band. Looking at a Tuna or a Resco.

I'll be honest, before I "discovered" watches I didn't know a Submariner from a Timex. So I went through fifty years in ignorance. My family (I refer to immediate as well as extended family) was working class, and owning a Rolex in may family would be quite frowned upon as uppity and trying to act rich. I found that some of the nonsense the family spent its money could have been better spent on a nice watch or two or three. I'm still working class, own my house and vehicles, work everyday, and I don't buy such foolishness as alcohol or cigarettes, I don't buy a car every five or seven years, I never buy clothes I just use what I've had all these years, and I buy watches. I don't own a Sub, but do have a 2002 SeaDweller.
I bought my Rolex Submariner in 1975 in England it cost me £176 I still use it daily it's now valued at about £5400 with all its original paper invoices and guarantee plus original box.Would I buy a new one today no I would not they are overpriced because every man and his dog knows what a Rolex is,someone has to pay for all that advertising at F1 events and Wimbledon. Wish I had bought a few though in 1975,good watch never missed a beat in its life,still dive with it.
Dave Lee That’s gotta be in London! My Dad’s gaff in Bucks was £4200 in ‘66, it’s now worth £400k, nothing like the huge rise of your apartment, flippin’ pricey, though! I considered buying a Submariner for £800 in ‘83, but decided to not pull the trigger in the end........big mistake!

I have had my 16800 since new in 1986, and worn it daily for 25 years. I had it serviced twice, refinished/serviced once, had the face replaced (due to the yellow patina everyone likes) with a white gold outlined non-lumed version, had the bezel insert replaced to match the non-lumed face (the Pip) and had the bracelet clasp replaced due to it being hit by a hammer. All done by Rolex in Dallas, TX. The watch still looks and runs like new. Is it worth the $7500 it cost new in '86...probably not, but it is nice, and it does get the attention you refer to in your video. I would not buy another, but I am glad I bought my 16800!
As a precision mechanic / engineer I love mechanic toys. I had a look at so many watches because it IS a lot of money but they all did not convince me. I bit the bullet and NEVER regretted it! I wear them with a suit and on the beach- versatility is an important point if you just have one „good“ watch!
That cat.....I love it. I got my Dad's Sub when he passed it on to me. Said that I earned it being a great dad and really figuring our life. It was very nice of him because it was his grail watch. I'm glad that he decided to give it to me before he knew he was ill and passed away. It makes a big difference to have been given it just because he wanted to share something so meaningful with me. I don't think I'd pay for a Rolex at their current prices. Even a Tudor would do it for me...I love those snowflake hands.

I think the beauty of a watch like the Rolex is that it is unchanging and not quickly obsolete because it will always be repairable. Smart watches are just instantly obsolete and soon unrepairable and disposable. I am not a wealthy man but I buy a good watch every decade, Rolex, IWC, Breitling, Omega so far. and I keep them.
My dad got one in 1973 from his dad. It is about 45 years old. The bisel fell but that is all it happened. It still works perfectly well. I am crazy about having one like it because it is worth it.
Re the James Bond comment, your almost correct. Ian Fleming had a Rolex Explorer as his personal watch, in the original James Bond novels he only refers to James Bond wearing a Rolex Oyster (not a submariner).
Firstly:The Submariner is a Rolex Oyster. Second: Ian Fleming recommended the Submariner to the production because it was used from the military and especially The Navy Seals, frogmen etc. So yes. The Sub IS the James Bond watch
The Rolex Submariner will always be the ORIGINAL James Bond watch. As long as Aston Martins will be his original cars and Vodka Martinis (shaken and not stired) will be his favourite drink. Omega paid a ton of money to EON productions just to change the watch of JB. But Omega will always be the outsider for 007 just like the BMW's he was driving at the Brosnan years (and i'm fond of BMW's...)

Have a Submariner that I absolutely love! It's the version silver and gold (blue face). It's been my best companion for the last 10 years! Looks and works just like new! Paid a little more than $5,000 for it! I have no idea of what it's worth today, and it does not matter to me! I love that watch! If any question, just go ahead!
I have a 2005 Submariner I bought for $4,000 I had it insured for $5,100 my son in law told me what they’re going for so I had it reappraised at $11,500 …so glad nothing happened it it when it was under insured
I gifted my wife a Rolex Stainless/White Gold Lady Datejust silver dial with diamonds on the 5 minute markers except the 15 minute hand...she gifted me a Submariner Date...wedding presents as a gift of time back in 2006. We are not aficionados, but wanted something special to remember our special moment in time. With periodic maintenance, we will wear our timepieces for our lifetime, and with that, they are our own little time capsules to remember...the gift of time to each other. The Sub is iconic because it captured the essence of simplicity. It's no frills, no bells & whistles, just a straight up, well built work horse. For me it looks its best in stainless steel. It doesn't need gold or two tone to make it look great. Black dial, blue or green it's just as beautiful in all its colours. As a kid the first watch I bought was a timex diver that looked a lot like a Sub. That was what attracted me to it. That $30 Timex in the late 70's started me off on a life long love affair with watches.
I had one I picked up used. It developed problems in the movement my local watch maker could not repair. I ended up trading it for more than i paid for it toward a Planet ocean (a watch I don’t think I will ever sell). The two-tone blue face submariner might just be the mot beautiful watch ever made!
I have a 1961 ref 5512 Rolex Submariner with pointed crown guards and a gilt 2 line dial with chapter ring and exclamation dot. It belonged to my grandfather, then my father and know to me as a third generation owner. It has passed only 3 services in its life. And still is my everyday wearer keeping amazing time after almost 60 years of existence in the family... Need to say more?
I bought my Rolex in 1986 for $560. It was purchased in the Navy exchange by my cousin who was in Europe and on the Ike. It has been on my wrist almost every day since I got it. Alas, it was just about totally worn out and I was ready to move on and retire it. I tried to buy a Seadweller redline at an AD, well several and just gave up. So my brother said to just completely overhaul it because I already owned a watch most folks would love to own. So I took it to the AD and said that I wanted a complete and total overhaul along with a new bracelet. So off it went in early January of 2020. Just before the virus hit I got the call that the watch was ready. $2900 for the rebuild and when they handed it to me, you could not tell that is was a 35 year old watch. Yes the case had been polished, but it’s my watch, I know it’s history, don’t have any kids to pass it on to, so again I wear it every day and love looking at my Subbie. I don’t want the Seadweller anymore and I would not trade even up for one. The only comment I ever got was some wise ass asked me if it was a real Rolex. I ask him if that was a real Timex he was wearing. I was helping out at an ag dealer in parts, and peons like me weren’t supposed to wear nice watches. Even though that watch was less than half price, I save every penny I could for three years to buy my sub. So that comment really was unnecessary.
I bought a new Rolex Submariner from Brodnax Jewelers in Memphis, Ten., in 1966....would you believe it cost $166 then? There were NO fakes in that era and Brodnax was the ONLY Rolex dealer in Memphis at the time . I bought four more over the years, paying $1200 for a slightly used in 1990. Today, a new one cost about $9,000 or more....totally ridiculous.
Superb video Jory. I don't know if you realize it as you made no mention of it but yours happens to be the very desirable transitional 16800 model which was all the new updates, sapphire crystal, 300m dive depth & quickset but still had the old style dial from the 1680 which only lasted for less then a year. I know a lot about this because I bought the same watch brand new from a AD in 1983 just before going into the Army. The watch at the time listed for $1125.00 & I ended up walking out the door for $880.00 & they gave me 12 month no interest financing to boot. I'm not going to say that no other watch couldn't have done what my Sub did but I whore it every day of my life for 25 years, it has gone thru every advanced combat school that the military offers, served in multiple combat tours & actually aided in saving my life once. It didn't get its first service until it was 12 years old, Its only been polished once by Rolex & the watch still looks great. I officially retired her after 25 years but still wear it from time to time. I have all the boxes books & paperwork & recently turned down a offer $8000.00 which is really pretty amazing when you think about it. Their are not many watches you can buy, wear & enjoy & have it appreciate like a Rolex. All I can say that is the watch that made me an avid watch collector and this is the one watch that I would never part with under any circumstances. Their are so many great watches on the market but their is just something so special about the understated & classic 40mm Submariner, it really is iconic. I sold my Rolex Submariner after it had been sitting in an empty mayonnaise jar for about 10 years, mainly because it wasn't that accurate and cost a fortune to service. Sold it for a ton of money. Bought some quartz watches, and the best is the Phoibos 300 meter diver, PX002, a homage that looks like a Rolex Sub but bigger, more accurate, better lume, better band width and fit, and a nice sapphire crystal with cyclops. Cost $119 on Amazon. That's 1/70 the cost of a Rolex Submariner. And I like it better. Check it out, all the good looks, none of the expense to own and service, better size and fit, truly a perfect watch, and not bling.
The stainless steel Rolex Submariner is the best selling luxury sport watch of all time and always will be. It’s also an exceptional value fetching nearly 3/4 the price (or better) pre-owned right out of the gate. I have owned over a Million Dollars in watches collectively (not all at once as I’m not a hedge fund manager) and typically hold $200K in 3- pieces, but always have a Sub. Also a great 1st luxury watch regardless the year 1960’s 1680 reference right through the current ceramic. Good vid 👍🏻

I bought a 2003 Rolex Submariner Date 16610 (Y-Series) used with all boxes, certificate, booklets, calendar and that small Rolex anchor thing and stuff in 2014 for the price of 4065 Euros. The Y-Series was the last production year with the holes in the horns and the first year with that lasered crown in the saphire crystal. 2003 was also a special year for the Sub because it was the 50th anniversary of the Submariner. By now on ebay a used Y-Series 16610 Sub can reach prices up to 5800 Euros and mine is like new. That's a good value appreciation for three years of owning it. You never make a mistake with a Rolex Sub. ;)
I've got a 16800 as well and it is first and foremost a rock-solid timepiece which will still work when the last Quartz watch has long died. if you want one and can afford it, great. If you can't, go for Seiko, Steinhart or another good-quality brand.

Purchased my Sub in 1998 new. Worn it every day, never take off, works perfectly +2 a day. Serviced once in 20 years. original bracelet the most comfortable ever. Does the job, great at work, casual, pool sea physical work, you name it. Its the ultimate tool watch with cache! 20 years! Works just fine and never noticed . the newer stable of Rolex'x, with the exception of the Explorer 1 are just way to big and blingy for my tase now.
Hi! In the 60s I had a paper route, a watchmaker was my customer, he gave me a short lecture on the Sub b/c my oo7 reference, compared it to the Hamilton which if memory serves me right won the contract for the US Navy(guess I shoulda check before saying that😁) over the Sub, anyway, he also said about the Rolex Sub, if you fall on hard times, it's the only watch you can exchange for money anywhere in the world.
Nice review! I'm new to your channel, but will give gladly watch a few more of your videos! At first I thought it was going to be another Rolex hit piece with the huge Seiko print behind you...glad I decided to play it! I love the 16800 reference with the drilled lugs and matte black bezel (aluminum, right?). The newer ceramic bezels dress it up a bit more, but I prefer the toolish vibe of the matte finish. I do love the new glide-lock bracelets, upgraded clasp and solid end links...just adds to the "substantial" feel, fit and finish you described. I have the "blingy" TT blue and yellow gold 116613 reference, but it really doesn't appease my desire for a durable diver...in fact it spends a lot of time in my watch case. I own a 2006 submariner 16610 with the SEL metal band. The beauty of this Rolex watch is it still looks absolutely gorgeous and brand new even after all these years. They don't scratch easily and the design is timeless. Very accurate time, looks and feels expensive. Buying a Rolex is not just buying a watch, you're buying an investment that hold its value just like gold.
Love the Sub. Had an old no date, then SS date, then Black two tone , now brand new Blue two tone ceramic. Ya I guess you could say I love this watch. Also a new GMT Master II Batman, for everyday, but the Sub is my fav. Thanks for the video, I enjoyed it :)
I had wanted a Submariner since I saw Connery as Bond; a very long time ago. In 2013, I purchased a new Submariner Date, 116610LN. The jeweler managed to find me an anchor as they were no longer included in the packaging, has that changed? My only complaint and one that has bothered a lot of people, is that when the crown is fully tightened, it no longer sits with the top of the crown at the 12 o'clock position when looking at the watch from the side with the watch laid flat. This was once a characteristic of all Rolex watches. I only wear my Sub, I wear no other watch. Why would I pay money like this to have it sit on a watch-winder? I'm not wealthy, just careful with what I buy and particular. I wear it every day, even when bush-crafting but do remove it if working in my wood shop or doing anything that might damage it or myself; building a deck for instance. The watch CAN be scratched and nicked if you live as an Action Man but having it polished every few years brings it back, and with the patina that a watch like this should have. You did remark that many people never use these as intended. You wont see a navy clearance diver or commando remove his sub because it might get scratched. I have had a few people who know and sell watches, tell me that they carry and source other brands as they feel Rolex and Omega aren't what they used to be. Maybe, but there isn't a Tissot out there that has the look or the mystique of a Rolex. I purchased a white Hamilton Ventura for my wife as a Christmas gift and must say that after Rolex, Hamilton is my favourite watch. My only concern now is that regular maintenance is required and forces you to b without the watch for a period of time; the two year recommended maintenance period is even by dealer standards, far too frequent and some people never do it at all. Great review I personally do not think it is over-rated and I really enjoy having one in my collection. It is nearly conclusive that the literary Bond wore a Rolex Explorer 1016 like its writer Ian Fleming. Hollywood is what made the Submariner the Bond watch. Being a Bond fan this is why I have one of each in my collection.
At one point- for many years, Rolex watches were military issue for US Navy divers and Frogmen. The SEALS wore them too. Thing is, back then a Rolex was just a well built hard duty watch. Over time, however, it became a LUXURY item...which meant the SEALS replaced it with an inexpensive Casio a few years ago. When the watch made it's reputation it was not a rich man's terribly expensive watch - it was just a terribly well built watch.

How to make an expensive Swiss watch: 1. Mass produce a $200 watch. 2. Spend hundreds/thousands of dollars per watch on advertising, celebrity endorsements and sports sponsorship. 3. Have absurdly high distribution costs. 4 Allow your dealers 75% gross margin to pay for the bored staff, fancy display cases and lighting in your store. Alternatively you can have a very high quality (300m/automatic/sapphire crystal/ceramic bezel etc) dive watch made in China for $100 ($50 for quartz) and sell it online for $200-400.
16610 circa 1996. I've worn this thing for over a year straight, every day. The steel on the clasp's a little tarnished, but you would think I was wearing a watch that was 22 years old as the rest of the stainless steel glistens and glints as if much newer -- that's why Rolex's famous.
Not sure if this has been said, but original book James Bond's Rolex is not named but is generally believed to be an Explorer not a Submariner...and even if it had been a sub it wasn't one with a god aweful date.

I purchased my first and new Rolex Submariner 16610 M serial number with the rehaut RolexRolexRolex engraving in 2010. Since then I've been grown more fond of the vintage models with the through lug case holes and tritium dials. I'm seriolusy thinking of buying a early-mid 90's 16610 and selling mine. The end generation 16610 with the engraved rehaut is refered to as a transition model and seems to be somewhat sought after because of the few years production however it doesn't really appeal to me any more. At least as the original owner with all box and papers I should be able to get what I paid for it so I an pick up and eariler model sub.
I just recently bought a 86 TT 16803 and I feel the same. Much classier in my opinion when compared to the newer subs. Plus they hold value like crazy.

Somebody has probably made this comparison before, but to me the sub is like a Porsche 911. Lots of folks seem to get them because of the reputation, not really knowing anything about cars/watches. But like you said, it's not Porsche's fault. It's still a great car.
Love the Rolex Submariner. Owned several over the years, new and used. Something would invariably come along that I thought I wanted more so sold the current Submariner I had at the time and always made money on them. The one Sub I did keep was a 2000 model that I bought used for $2600 in 2001. Its probably worth around 4k now. The Stainless Subs and Explorers I always did well with. Can't go wrong with either.
Had my Submariner, which I purchased in 2011, stolen. My fiancé gifted a 2017 model to me this year for Valentine’s Day. Really dig the slick clasp and quality on this timeless timepiece. Good to know that I can kill someone with it as James Bond did. Gives a new new meaning to “Killer Watch”. Great vid!
Another appeal of purchasing an older Rolex besides being able to get into one a lot cheaper than buying a brand new one is the "dress down" look you often see now. I know this is not new but I'm seeing a lot of pics with old Rolex's with the bracelet removed & replacing them with a Nato strap canvas or leather. It's still Rolex, it still looks good, but much more casual almost with an attitude of, "I don't care it's my beater watch".
Really? Well, people who can afford a Rolex could also afford a JLC, Blancpain or Breguet, but do you really have to own all of it? We all know that among all in the top tier, Rolex spends the most in marketing, so those who bought Rolex actually pays a chunk to cover their marketing cost, which makes it a tad more expensive to what they're really worth for
Vinny Ocean i can afford to walk in and pay cash on a Sub and I always complain that they (Rolex) are marketing Giants. They are not even close to "the best". Yet every pleb on Earth aspires to own one! They are kind of like the Bose of Watches, except that they DO make a great watch! Truth is, I just wish I could bottle the marketing genius.

You're both wrong. I have a SUB bought 20 years ago when prices were relatively lower than they are today. I think the Rolex has been cleverly marketed like many other brands’ HUBLOT and OMEGA, TAG etc, and are just overpriced in my opinion. People who say Rolexes are for ignorant people are either snobs or simply jealous. Rolex is one of the most charismatic, best all round watches on the market and all the watch anyone would need, use it as a sports, work or dress watch, it always look good and stands out, it's no PATEK or Vacheron, but then it's not competing with those brands.
My father in law just bought my wife a USD 9000 rolex with diamonds and meteorite dial, he offered to buy me 1 too, but i turned down the offer. Saved enough of my own money and bought a Bell & Ross instead. Next one will be a rolex. Why rolex? Because i want to. To me theyre classic, well built and a good investment.
False credit given. Rolex is the archetype diver's watch, but Blancpain was the pioneer in the first dive watch with rotating bezel. The number one reason why Rolex is king has little to do with the quality of the watch. Rolex just has a juggernaut marketing department. I'm confident Rolex spends more on marketing than it does on manufacturing.
But he's right. Rolex jews their watches out to the nth degree. It's the same shit with Oakley sunglasses, or Beats headphones -- not NEARLY worth as much to manufacturer as they are to the consumer (In fact, I was sponsored by Oakley at one point and even I will tell you they are shit). And that's because they have to pay for all that up front marketing costs. There's no way in a snowy hell these watches are worth what people pay, not from a material or manufacturing point anyway. Submariner 1680 was my first Rolex. In 1976 the price at AD was 507 us dolars. I still enjoy wearing it 42 years later.

I purchased a Tudor Oysterdate at the base PX back in '72 for $110. The blue dial and bezel are very faded from thousands of hours in the sun but it's still my favorite. Back then I was a naive young kid but knowing what I know now, I wish I would have bought a case of them.
A lot of it has to do with the fact the moment you buy a sub from the AD it appreciates by aprox. 36% while Omega depreciates by about 40%

I bought my Submariner in 1970 when I was in the USMC. Sold it a couple of years ago for 5x the purchase price. Beautiful watch. Prestigious. Got lots of positive attention.
Kept lousy time. Bracelet opened several times at most inopportune moments...(fingertip saves!). Required EXPENSIVE service every five years or so (I wore it constantly... combat, law enforcement, frequent diving, mountain climbing, skiing, dinner, church... you get the idea.)
For a bullet proof, reliable, reasonably priced dive watch, go Seiko. Currently wearing a 200 M Kinetic with a heavy NATO band.
Looking at a Tuna or a Resco.

I'll be honest, before I "discovered" watches I didn't know a Submariner from a Timex. So I went through fifty years in ignorance. My family (I refer to immediate as well as extended family) was working class, and owning a Rolex in may family would be quite frowned upon as uppity and trying to act rich. I found that some of the nonsense the family spent its money could have been better spent on a nice watch or two or three. I'm still working class, own my house and vehicles, work everyday, and I don't buy such foolishness as alcohol or cigarettes, I don't buy a car every five or seven years, I never buy clothes I just use what I've had all these years, and I buy watches. I don't own a Sub, but do have a 2002 SeaDweller.

I bought my Rolex Submariner in 1975 in England it cost me £176 I still use it daily it's now valued at about £5400 with all its original paper invoices and guarantee plus original box.Would I buy a new one today no I would not they are overpriced because every man and his dog knows what a Rolex is,someone has to pay for all that advertising at F1 events and Wimbledon. Wish I had bought a few though in 1975,good watch never missed a beat in its life,still dive with it.

Just bought a two tone Bluesy.The design is perfect.
I have had my 16800 since new in 1986, and worn it daily for 25 years. I had it serviced twice, refinished/serviced once, had the face replaced (due to the yellow patina everyone likes) with a white gold outlined non-lumed version, had the bezel insert replaced to match the non-lumed face (the Pip) and had the bracelet clasp replaced due to it being hit by a hammer. All done by Rolex in Dallas, TX. The watch still looks and runs like new. Is it worth the $7500 it cost new in '86...probably not, but it is nice, and it does get the attention you refer to in your video. I would not buy another, but I am glad I bought my 16800!

As a precision mechanic / engineer I love mechanic toys. I had a look at so many watches because it IS a lot of money but they all did not convince me. I bit the bullet and NEVER regretted it! I wear them with a suit and on the beach- versatility is an important point if you just have one „good“ watch!
That cat.....I love it. I got my Dad's Sub when he passed it on to me. Said that I earned it being a great dad and really figuring our life. It was very nice of him because it was his grail watch. I'm glad that he decided to give it to me before he knew he was ill and passed away. It makes a big difference to have been given it just because he wanted to share something so meaningful with me. I don't think I'd pay for a Rolex at their current prices. Even a Tudor would do it for me...I love those snowflake hands.

I think the beauty of a watch like the Rolex is that it is unchanging and not quickly obsolete because it will always be repairable. Smart watches are just instantly obsolete and soon unrepairable and disposable. I am not a wealthy man but I buy a good watch every decade, Rolex, IWC, Breitling, Omega so far. and I keep them.
Love my submariner. I have a No date that I purchase in 2013. I like the No Date version, because it feel more classic.
My dad got one in 1973 from his dad. It is about 45 years old. The bisel fell but that is all it happened. It still works perfectly well. I am crazy about having one like it because it is worth it.
Re the James Bond comment, your almost correct. Ian Fleming had a Rolex Explorer as his personal watch, in the original James Bond novels he only refers to James Bond wearing a Rolex Oyster (not a submariner).

It's also because Rolex Oysters were popular in British military at the time, Ian Fleming was a Royal Navy intelligence officer.
Also since 1995 james bond has worn omega which is a far better looking watch in my opinion.

The Rolex Submariner will always be the ORIGINAL James Bond watch. As long as Aston Martins will be his original cars and Vodka Martinis (shaken and not stired) will be his favourite drink. Omega paid a ton of money to EON productions just to change the watch of JB. But Omega will always be the outsider for 007 just like the BMW's he was driving at the Brosnan years (and i'm fond of BMW's...)

Have a Submariner that I absolutely love! It's the version silver and gold (blue face). It's been my best companion for the last 10 years! Looks and works just like new! Paid a little more than $5,000 for it! I have no idea of what it's worth today, and it does not matter to me! I love that watch!

I gifted my wife a Rolex Stainless/White Gold Lady Datejust silver dial with diamonds on the 5 minute markers except the 15 minute hand...she gifted me a Submariner Date...wedding presents as a gift of time back in 2006. We are not aficionados, but wanted something special to remember our special moment in time. With periodic maintenance, we will wear our timepieces for our lifetime, and with that, they are our own little time capsules to remember...the gift of time to each other. The Sub is iconic because it captured the essence of simplicity. It's no frills, no bells & whistles, just a straight up, well built work horse. For me it looks its best in stainless steel. It doesn't need gold or two tone to make it look great. Black dial, blue or green it's just as beautiful in all its colours. As a kid the first watch I bought was a timex diver that looked a lot like a Sub. That was what attracted me to it. That $30 Timex in the late 70's started me off on a life long love affair with watches.
I had one I picked up used. It developed problems in the movement my local watch maker could not repair. I ended up trading it for more than i paid for it toward a Planet ocean (a watch I don’t think I will ever sell). The two-tone blue face submariner might just be the mot beautiful watch ever made!

In the Fleming novels, Bond most likely wore an Explorer. Whatever it was, it is stated that it is a Rolex Oyster Perpetual and that it had numerals.
I have a 1961 ref 5512 Rolex Submariner with pointed crown guards and a gilt 2 line dial with chapter ring and exclamation dot. It belonged to my grandfather, then my father and know to me as a third generation owner. It has passed only 3 services in its life. And still is my everyday wearer keeping amazing time after almost 60 years of existence in the family... Need to say more?

I bought my Rolex in 1986 for $560. It was purchased in the Navy exchange by my cousin who was in Europe and on the Ike. It has been on my wrist almost every day since I got it. Alas, it was just about totally worn out and I was ready to move on and retire it. I tried to buy a Seadweller redline at an AD, well several and just gave up. So my brother said to just completely overhaul it because I already owned a watch most folks would love to own. So I took it to the AD and said that I wanted a complete and total overhaul along with a new bracelet. So off it went in early January of 2020. Just before the virus hit I got the call that the watch was ready. $2900 for the rebuild and when they handed it to me, you could not tell that is was a 35 year old watch. Yes the case had been polished, but it’s my watch, I know it’s history, don’t have any kids to pass it on to, so again I wear it every day and love looking at my Subbie. I don’t want the Seadweller anymore and I would not trade even up for one. The only comment I ever got was some wise ass asked me if it was a real Rolex. I ask him if that was a real Timex he was wearing. I was helping out at an ag dealer in parts, and peons like me weren’t supposed to wear nice watches. Even though that watch was less than half price, I save every penny I could for three years to buy my sub. So that comment really was unnecessary.
I own a 116600 but I still want a submariner to wear everyday. no date, wth date, ceramic , non ceramic. Given a choice I'd want the two tone bluesy.

I bought a new Rolex Submariner from Brodnax Jewelers in Memphis, Ten., in 1966....would you believe it cost $166 then? There were NO fakes in that era and Brodnax was the ONLY Rolex dealer in Memphis at the time . I bought four more over the years, paying $1200 for a slightly used in 1990. Today, a new one cost about $9,000 or more....totally ridiculous.

Superb video Jory. I don't know if you realize it as you made no mention of it but yours happens to be the very desirable transitional 16800 model which was all the new updates, sapphire crystal, 300m dive depth & quickset but still had the old style dial from the 1680 which only lasted for less then a year. I know a lot about this because I bought the same watch brand new from a AD in 1983 just before going into the Army. The watch at the time listed for $1125.00 & I ended up walking out the door for $880.00 & they gave me 12 month no interest financing to boot. I'm not going to say that no other watch couldn't have done what my Sub did but I whore it every day of my life for 25 years, it has gone thru every advanced combat school that the military offers, served in multiple combat tours & actually aided in saving my life once. It didn't get its first service until it was 12 years old, Its only been polished once by Rolex & the watch still looks great. I officially retired her after 25 years but still wear it from time to time. I have all the boxes books & paperwork & recently turned down a offer $8000.00 which is really pretty amazing when you think about it. Their are not many watches you can buy, wear & enjoy & have it appreciate like a Rolex. All I can say that is the watch that made me an avid watch collector and this is the one watch that I would never part with under any circumstances. Their are so many great watches on the market but their is just something so special about the understated & classic 40mm Submariner, it really is iconic. I sold my Rolex Submariner after it had been sitting in an empty mayonnaise jar for about 10 years, mainly because it wasn't that accurate and cost a fortune to service. Sold it for a ton of money. Bought some quartz watches, and the best is the Phoibos 300 meter diver, PX002, a homage that looks like a Rolex Sub but bigger, more accurate, better lume, better band width and fit, and a nice sapphire crystal with cyclops. Cost $119 on Amazon. That's 1/70 the cost of a Rolex Submariner. And I like it better. Check it out, all the good looks, none of the expense to own and service, better size and fit, truly a perfect watch, and not bling.
The service is a total rip off. One of the reasons I sold my Yachtmaster.
The stainless steel Rolex Submariner is the best selling luxury sport watch of all time and always will be. It’s also an exceptional value fetching nearly 3/4 the price (or better) pre-owned right out of the gate. I have owned over a Million Dollars in watches collectively (not all at once as I’m not a hedge fund manager) and typically hold $200K in 3- pieces, but always have a Sub.
Also a great 1st luxury watch regardless the year 1960’s 1680 reference right through the current ceramic.

I bought a 2003 Rolex Submariner Date 16610 (Y-Series) used with all boxes, certificate, booklets, calendar and that small Rolex anchor thing and stuff in 2014 for the price of 4065 Euros. The Y-Series was the last production year with the holes in the horns and the first year with that lasered crown in the saphire crystal. 2003 was also a special year for the Sub because it was the 50th anniversary of the Submariner. By now on ebay a used Y-Series 16610 Sub can reach prices up to 5800 Euros and mine is like new. That's a good value appreciation for three years of owning it. You never make a mistake with a Rolex Sub. ;)

I've got a 16800 as well and it is first and foremost a rock-solid timepiece which will still work when the last Quartz watch has long died.
if you want one and can afford it, great. If you can't, go for Seiko, Steinhart or another good-quality brand.
2001 k series was the first with solid links and the rolex crown hologram on the crystal not 2003

Purchased my Sub in 1998 new. Worn it every day, never take off, works perfectly +2 a day. Serviced once in 20 years. original bracelet the most comfortable ever. Does the job, great at work, casual, pool sea physical work, you name it. Its the ultimate tool watch with cache! 20 years! Works just fine and never noticed . the newer stable of Rolex'x, with the exception of the Explorer 1 are just way to big and blingy for my tase now.

In the 60s I had a paper route, a watchmaker was my customer, he gave me a short lecture on the Sub b/c my oo7 reference, compared it to the Hamilton which if memory serves me right won the contract for the US Navy(guess I shoulda check before saying that😁) over the Sub, anyway, he also said about the Rolex Sub, if you fall on hard times, it's the only watch you can exchange for money anywhere in the world.
Got a roles submariner when I was 17. Gave it to my son when I was 42. It was still nearly perfect. Bought a gold and silver datejust. Love Rolex!
I've had mine for a while (maybe 2003), its box and papers were stolen. Held value well and is something I'd buy again.

At first I thought it was going to be another Rolex hit piece with the huge Seiko print behind you...glad I decided to play it! I love the 16800 reference with the drilled lugs and matte black bezel (aluminum, right?). The newer ceramic bezels dress it up a bit more, but I prefer the toolish vibe of the matte finish. I do love the new glide-lock bracelets, upgraded clasp and solid end links...just adds to the "substantial" feel, fit and finish you described. I have the "blingy" TT blue and yellow gold 116613 reference, but it really doesn't appease my desire for a durable diver...in fact it spends a lot of time in my watch case. I own a 2006 submariner 16610 with the SEL metal band. The beauty of this Rolex watch is it still looks absolutely gorgeous and brand new even after all these years. They don't scratch easily and the design is timeless. Very accurate time, looks and feels expensive. Buying a Rolex is not just buying a watch, you're buying an investment that hold its value just like gold.
I sold my sub and bought a frogman, the casio just does the job better.Mutch better tool watch regardless of price.

I had wanted a Submariner since I saw Connery as Bond; a very long time ago. In 2013, I purchased a new Submariner Date, 116610LN. The jeweler managed to find me an anchor as they were no longer included in the packaging, has that changed? My only complaint and one that has bothered a lot of people, is that when the crown is fully tightened, it no longer sits with the top of the crown at the 12 o'clock position when looking at the watch from the side with the watch laid flat. This was once a characteristic of all Rolex watches.
I only wear my Sub, I wear no other watch. Why would I pay money like this to have it sit on a watch-winder? I'm not wealthy, just careful with what I buy and particular. I wear it every day, even when bush-crafting but do remove it if working in my wood shop or doing anything that might damage it or myself; building a deck for instance.
The watch CAN be scratched and nicked if you live as an Action Man but having it polished every few years brings it back, and with the patina that a watch like this should have. You did remark that many people never use these as intended. You wont see a navy clearance diver or commando remove his sub because it might get scratched.
I have had a few people who know and sell watches, tell me that they carry and source other brands as they feel Rolex and Omega aren't what they used to be. Maybe, but there isn't a Tissot out there that has the look or the mystique of a Rolex. I purchased a white Hamilton Ventura for my wife as a Christmas gift and must say that after Rolex, Hamilton is my favourite watch.
My only concern now is that regular maintenance is required and forces you to b without the watch for a period of time; the two year recommended maintenance period is even by dealer standards, far too frequent and some people never do it at all.

Great review I personally do not think it is over-rated and I really enjoy having one in my collection. It is nearly conclusive that the literary Bond wore a Rolex Explorer 1016 like its writer Ian Fleming. Hollywood is what made the Submariner the Bond watch. Being a Bond fan this is why I have one of each in my collection.

At one point- for many years, Rolex watches were military issue for US Navy divers and Frogmen. The SEALS wore them too. Thing is, back then a Rolex was just a well built hard duty watch. Over time, however, it became a LUXURY item...which meant the SEALS replaced it with an inexpensive Casio a few years ago. When the watch made it's reputation it was not a rich man's terribly expensive watch - it was just a terribly well built watch.

How to make an expensive Swiss watch:
1. Mass produce a $200 watch.
2. Spend hundreds/thousands of dollars per watch on advertising, celebrity endorsements and sports sponsorship.
3. Have absurdly high distribution costs.
4 Allow your dealers 75% gross margin to pay for the bored staff, fancy display cases and lighting in your store.
Alternatively you can have a very high quality (300m/automatic/sapphire crystal/ceramic bezel etc) dive watch made in China for $100 ($50 for quartz) and sell it online for $200-400.
16610 circa 1996. I've worn this thing for over a year straight, every day. The steel on the clasp's a little tarnished, but you would think I was wearing a watch that was 22 years old as the rest of the stainless steel glistens and glints as if much newer -- that's why Rolex's famous.
Not sure if this has been said, but original book James Bond's Rolex is not named but is generally believed to be an Explorer not a Submariner...and even if it had been a sub it wasn't one with a god aweful date.
The only problem is the cost a lot and they don’t keep as good a time as a time ex

I purchased my first and new Rolex Submariner 16610 M serial number with the rehaut RolexRolexRolex engraving in 2010. Since then I've been grown more fond of the vintage models with the through lug case holes and tritium dials. I'm seriolusy thinking of buying a early-mid 90's 16610 and selling mine. The end generation 16610 with the engraved rehaut is refered to as a transition model and seems to be somewhat sought after because of the few years production however it doesn't really appeal to me any more. At least as the original owner with all box and papers I should be able to get what I paid for it so I an pick up and eariler model sub.
I just recently bought a 86 TT 16803 and I feel the same. Much classier in my opinion when compared to the newer subs. Plus they hold value like crazy.
It's the perfect everyday watch if you can afford it. Expensive to some and cheap to others. It's a classic timepiece that never goes out of style.

Somebody has probably made this comparison before, but to me the sub is like a Porsche 911. Lots of folks seem to get them because of the reputation, not really knowing anything about cars/watches. But like you said, it's not Porsche's fault. It's still a great car.

I bought what I assume was a fake automatic Rolex in Mexico when I was 15 for like $20. I didn’t live long. Don’t remember what happened to it.
Love the Rolex Submariner. Owned several over the years, new and used. Something would invariably come along that I thought I wanted more so sold the current Submariner I had at the time and always made money on them. The one Sub I did keep was a 2000 model that I bought used for $2600 in 2001. Its probably worth around 4k now. The Stainless Subs and Explorers I always did well with. Can't go wrong with either.

Had my Submariner, which I purchased in 2011, stolen. My fiancé gifted a 2017 model to me this year for Valentine’s Day. Really dig the slick clasp and quality on this timeless timepiece. Good to know that I can kill someone with it as James Bond did. Gives a new new meaning to “Killer Watch”. Great vid!
Another appeal of purchasing an older Rolex besides being able to get into one a lot cheaper than buying a brand new one is the "dress down" look you often see now. I know this is not new but I'm seeing a lot of pics with old Rolex's with the bracelet removed & replacing them with a Nato strap canvas or leather. It's still Rolex, it still looks good, but much more casual almost with an attitude of, "I don't care it's my beater watch".

Really? Well, people who can afford a Rolex could also afford a JLC, Blancpain or Breguet, but do you really have to own all of it? We all know that among all in the top tier, Rolex spends the most in marketing, so those who bought Rolex actually pays a chunk to cover their marketing cost, which makes it a tad more expensive to what they're really worth for
Vinny Ocean i can afford to walk in and pay cash on a Sub and I always complain that they (Rolex) are marketing Giants. They are not even close to "the best". Yet every pleb on Earth aspires to own one!

Not true .. I love watches and am lucky enough to be easily able to buy a Rolex however I choose not to. To me they are often bought by people who are ignorant of the watch market and have therefore become a rather tacky status symbol

You're both wrong. I have a SUB bought 20 years ago when prices were relatively lower than they are today. I think the Rolex has been cleverly marketed like many other brands’ HUBLOT and OMEGA, TAG etc, and are just overpriced in my opinion. People who say Rolexes are for ignorant people are either snobs or simply jealous. Rolex is one of the most charismatic, best all round watches on the market and all the watch anyone would need, use it as a sports, work or dress watch, it always look good and stands out, it's no PATEK or Vacheron, but then it's not competing with those brands.

My father in law just bought my wife a USD 9000 rolex with diamonds and meteorite dial, he offered to buy me 1 too, but i turned down the offer. Saved enough of my own money and bought a Bell & Ross instead. Next one will be a rolex. Why rolex? Because i want to. To me theyre classic, well built and a good investment.
False credit given. Rolex is the archetype diver's watch, but Blancpain was the pioneer in the first dive watch with rotating bezel. The number one reason why Rolex is king has little to do with the quality of the watch. Rolex just has a juggernaut marketing department. I'm confident Rolex spends more on marketing than it does on manufacturing.
But he's right. Rolex jews their watches out to the nth degree. It's the same shit with Oakley sunglasses, or Beats headphones -- not NEARLY worth as much to manufacturer as they are to the consumer (In fact, I was sponsored by Oakley at one point and even I will tell you they are shit). And that's because they have to pay for all that up front marketing costs. There's no way in a snowy hell these watches are worth what people pay, not from a material or manufacturing point anyway. And if you dare disagree, well then, I'll just go ahead and pompously say you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about, because then, it's a true statement.

@@RaviGauravPandey Are they worth what people pay? Maybe or maybe not, some of them do however have a lot of gold on them (date just ect), so those ones certainly must be worth something! Gold is gold afterall.

Great video! Rolex is an excellent timepiece, but I think Blancpain was the first rotating bezel dive watch.
