  • Spinning the "Spinning Sara" style Fauxlags is so easy because they are so lightly wrapped and fluffy. Please see the how to make Fauxlags video for how to make them.

    Okay when you you hit me with that double draft my jaw literally dropped. I'm glad I'm learning this early in my game, it's going to be invaluable.

    I made some fauxlags this morning before I left my house and was just able to spin with them this evening it was so much easier than trying to spin directly from the combed top.

      I guess Im randomly asking but does someone know a tool to log back into an Instagram account?
      I stupidly lost my login password. I appreciate any assistance you can offer me.

    I love the way you explained the process. It makes sense now. I'm new at this. I need to learn more about making my own fibers from scrap because I just can't afford to buy it. Love your videos.

    I’ve been knitting for 25 years and just suddenly have gotten the urge to try spinning. I don’t have a spindle yet, only begun my research and came across this video. This is magic! I’m amazed! Your explanation and demonstration is very clear. Makes me think I just may be able to do it…maybe. But right now you look like a magician spinning these amazing fibers!

    Very nice! I have not tried double drafting on spindle spinning but now I will! And I'm going to try my hands at fauxlags too. I love this for color management.

    Thank you for the video! This would be a woolen draft, correct? Can you make a video on how to draft woolen vs worsted on a spindle? Appreciated!

    • @SpinningSara
      @SpinningSara  6 лет назад +5

      Yes, you are correct. It is a woolen draft on this spindle. What type of spindle are you using? Drafting worsted on a support spindle is 'almost' impossible, just in the way the spindle is held in conjunction to the fiber supply. But I can certainly do a video on worsted vs woolen on a drop spindle, top whorl or bottom/turkish. Would that be helpful?

    • @CriaAndKiddFW
      @CriaAndKiddFW 6 лет назад +1

      I am using a top whorl drop spindle right now. It's lightweight, 9", .5oz from essiespinner on Etsy. I have a medium weight top whorl as well.

    I’m wanting to try spinning woolen on a turkish spindle. Do you have fiber suggestions that might be easier for beginners?

    • @SpinningSara
      @SpinningSara  3 года назад +1

      I would recommend Polwarth, BFL and Finn as great learning fibers. I mean, they're amazing anytime fibers but they aren't as slippery as Merino and have nice long staples. Plus they're soft.

    This is so helpful! As a beginner, may I ask how you control the drafting/thickness of the yarn with this technique? Should you just make thicker fauxlags or do you control it in another way during spinning, similarly to your video with regular combed top? (I’m using a support spindle, if that matters :)) Thanks so much for your helpful videos, in any case 🙏🏻

    • @SpinningSara
      @SpinningSara  2 года назад +2

      Hi Nina! I control the thickness of my singles when spinning faux lags with a support spindle by the amount of twist and drafting speed/drafting length. Shorter drafts will help keep the singles fatter. This way you can control the diameter of the single. It also helps if you start by using two hands to get the single situated in its gauge. It is much easier to maintain a thicker gauge if you start with a thicker one. Pinching with your flicking hand to help engage more fibers will help.

    Hello Sara, thank you for such an informative podcast. Does the content of the box fit on the one spindle. Hoe much fits on a spindle?

    • @SpinningSara
      @SpinningSara  3 года назад

      How much fits on a spindle for me vs how much for you is very subjective. I don't like to bog my spindles down with a lot of weight so, no, the whole box will not fit in a single spindle for me.

    Thanks, Sara! Gotta work on my long draw. I can spin cotton long draw, no problem, but I just can’t do it with other fibers. Go figure!

    • @lanaterry7360
      @lanaterry7360 6 лет назад +1

      I am trying to learn on a supported spindle. I spin cotton on a tahkli and a charkha. It was my understanding that you needed the proper fiber preparation to spin long draw (rolags) and I never had any! Now, thanks to your rolag rolling technique, I can make some, which I have, and am doing a "beginners" long draw - not very confident and feeling very awkward! LOL!

    Well, I tried it, didn't work quite like that - they looked right but it looked like my make managed to find and draft the ends and I ended up with a tangle in my hand, not one nice neat end and a semi spun bit like you did . Ah well, try again tomorrow.

    • @SpinningSara
      @SpinningSara  3 года назад +1

      It definitely takes practice. You should try again with some sacrificial fiber so you won't be upset if you make mistakes while learning!

    How come your yarn doesn't roll up on top, do you have it at the very top or what?

    • @SpinningSara
      @SpinningSara  3 года назад

      I think I understand what you're asking. When the spindle is in motion, I tip the spindle toward the fiber supply so the singles flip off the tip rather than wrapping around. If you pay close attention you can see the singles are never at a 90° angle to the spindle tip unless I am winding on the temporary cop or the permanent one. HTH!

      If you are referring to the spindle and bowl, you can find them here: www.thespindleshop.net/ as long as you are not in New Zealand or Australia. Kiwi's and Aussie's have their own site.
