    I wrote morning pages for years and I had an amazing life. Then I moved. Had culture shock. Stopped writing morn pages because it was all negative. My life tanked. Dug myself out of the hole. Started writing morn pages again and my life significantly improved. Significantly.

    I've had, and have others, dramatic changes just by doing morning pages. I wrote 20 min. Then close the book. I write in fragments, unclear thoughts, proper and improper grammar. I just write whatever comes out for 20 min. I don't have to finish sentences, or worry about details. I just write then, close the book after 20 minutes. Changes happen that are quite dramatic. It's not intentional it's just like miracles happen when making morning pages part of your life. Do them everyday or no less than 5 days a week. I don't always do them in the morning but it's recommended. I still get results. It does help clear the mind for the day. Ty for your video. Very nice.

      What are the dramatic changes? Very curious to know.

    • @happy777abc

      @@TheRealTommyR clearer thinking more solid personality.less uncertain in my daily routine more present for each moment and somehow things just fall in to place. Seem to take risks more like entering a writing contest, being more assertive, learning a new skill revisiting old dreams that are important and things come your way with them . more aware of synchronicity and better intuition. These sound simple but are dramatically life changing

      That seems better than the "finish a page no matter what and don't think about it, just keep writing nonstop" I tried to do today. Half of what I wrote was "I hate this. My hand hurts. This exercise is stupid."

    I have been doing Morning Pages for 8 years now. I am not a writer but a painter, mixed media artist and thoroughly enjoying this daily ritual of writing in the early morning quiet with my cup of tea. I often have my latest painting in front of me and discuss it in my writing , critiquing and figuring out where to go next. It actually is almost a meditative process and one I will indulge in for the rest of my life.

    I had a middle school teacher (25 years ago) who taught me the "write without thinking" technique. We'd start every morning (first class of the day) spending 15 minutes doing this exercise. I didn't understand at the time what the point was, but I picked it back up years later after school and it's more or less become a life-changing habit. It clears my mind in the morning and makes me far more productive and creative. I'm only just now realizing where she got the idea from!

      I'm just learning this "morning pages" concept from this video, but my English Teacher for senior year of high school, '89-'90 made us do journaling exercises with a similar exercise - if we couldn't think of anything to write, we had to write "I can't think of anything to write" etc. but we couldn't stop writing. I've never had a consistent journaling habit but I'm still trying

    • @sketchley
      @sketchley  8 месяцев назад +13

      @@noonedidthistome keep at it and let me know how you get on. I'd suggest that telling you to write "I can't think of anything to write" is a flawed approach as it unconsciously reinforces the fact that you can't think of anything to write, making it difficult to think of anything to write! Try "so what else..? That's what I write now when I'm in danger of stalling.

    I first read "The Artists Way" in the 90s when it was first published. I have continued to do Morning Pages...... off and on.... for the past 30 years. I usually do Morning Pages when I have things "on my mind." Morning Pages always help me work things out in my mind and... they act as a meditation practice. I do them for 2 or 3 years at a time and then take a few years off. Back to Morning Pages for a few more years, take a break and so on. I wish that I had done them at least 5 mornings a week for the past 30 years, but... alas... I haven't. Your video popped up on my RUclips feed this morning. It's a "sign" 🙂 that its time for me to get back in the habit. Thank you. I needed that push. BTW, your explanation of how to do them is excellent !!! I always have been "nervous" about anyone reading what I have written because very often it is very very very personal and I really don't want anyone to read the pages. I have never found a need to go back and read anything that I've written. So... as soon as I have finished my morning writing, I immediately shred the pages. Anxiety about anyone reading them is then gone !!!! Works for me......

    Great video, I’ve been doing the pages consistently for like 3 or 4 years and more recently I’ve felt resistant to doing it and haven’t read the book in so long so I sometimes feel like I’m “doing it wrong”, but this video was a good refresher. The only thing I’m doing wrong is looking at my phone too much in the middle of writing and taking a 20 minute task and stretching it to like an hour

    Fascinating. A great takeaway is “and so it goes”. I had not realised the importance of writing WITHOUT stopping to think.
    Your idea of the two little lines in the margin, marking where you might like to take a thought further, is also a great tip. I’ve been meaning to get back to or restart writing morning pages as I only did a few weeks and it took me over an hour each time - due to stopping to think or research. 20 minutes sounds ideal. I use different coloured pens I discovered recently called “Pilot Frixion Ball” as I can rub out mistakes. I also chose to change the way I write specific letters, (like “e”) in order to have more legible writing, because I keep a Dream Journal and upon waking I am too groggy to write very well.
    Thank you very much for this video. 😘

    This is invaluable information. My take, my method has evolved since I first started doing this. I set an alarm on my phone for 30 minutes and during that time i write as much ------of anything that comes into my head as I possibly can. I do it on the computer. it's an exercise to be done first thing everyday that pays off in very subtle ways breaking down so called writer's block. Or at least it has for me. Additionally, I copy pages for an hour, this time in long hand, of authors I admire. These two exercises will absolutely break through any stagnation a writer might come up against--especially if a timer is set, along with the intention of flexing your literary muscles like this at the same time each day. It makes writing for yourself later in the day, when ever that is, much easier and more fun.

    • @sketchley
      @sketchley  6 месяцев назад

      I've heard of the copying concept; we all do it, especially when we're starting out. Direct copying isn't really for me, but I can see it could help people learn language, expression and style. Ultimately, though, it's your own distinct style that has real value. I always write morning pages longhand, even though my handwriting's not great: tapping keys just isn't the same, and it's not about quantity. Thanks for watching, and taking the time to leave a comment 🙏

    Great tips! I've been writing morning pages for a couple of years with some breaks, but been back on it now for 6 months, been doing 3 pages of A4 so it takes a bit longer, didn't know about the American sizing, not sure I want to go smaller! highlighter pen def a good tip, my main challenge is that cos I write so much so quick I sometimes can't read the bits I've marked to go back to so
    have been noting them on a sep bit of paper but that does break the flow.

      At the moment I'm using B5 composition size - a Moleskine Cahier - really nice and slim, and I think the extra room allows more time for things to emerge. I sometimes can't read my writing either! But I don't go back and highlight until I've finished. Thanks for watching! 🙏

    RUclips suggested this to me, and I've never heard of this concept before. However, back around 1979/1980 when I was 19/20, I started doing this sort of thing, inspired by Jack Kerouac's method of taking a roll of newsprint and just start typing a story, without putting much thought into it. That's how he wrote "On the Road".
    So I started doing it, and ended up with more of a Bob Dylan or John Lennon type prose. Sensible nonsense, really, lol. To the average person it's gibberish, BUT... there are moments in those writings that are thought-provoking. It starts out weird, but my mind locks into something deeper, and out comes some good stuff.
    I haven't even thought about writing like that for many years. Now that I've found out about Morning Pages, perhaps it's time to start again.

    I've been doing morning pages for a few years now. As you say it's private and not for wider consumption. I release worry about anyone seeing anything, regardless of the content by shredding it as soon as a sheet it done. I don't use a bound book but a clipboard with loose sheets. That helps to free my thoughts. It is usually rather mundane and simply "brain dump" time but it does allow me to get some thoughts out and worked through. If something important does come up, I'll write a separate note as a to do before I shred it. This was an excellent walkthrough.

I also don’t want to have to lug around many heavy cartons of ultra-personal writing whenever I move, as a friend does with her years of journals. But I may just try this.

    That's a great summary of Morning Pages!
    However, in one point I can't agree - A4 is much closer to US letter size than A5. Basically, A4 is only 1,7 cm taller than US letter size and that's about the amount of page that it lacks in width. Of course, you are free to choose the paper you want. But you need to be aware, that Julia Cameron's recommendation of three pages US letter size is about the same surface as three A4 pages. Three A5 pages (including the Leuchtturm1917) are therefore only half of what she recommends.
    I also love the Leuchtturm1917 notebooks - except that I use them for Journaling, not for Morning Pages. Journals are for me something you want to keep for many years. In my understanding the purpose of Morning Pages is in the writing not in the keeping and rereading.

      If it works for you, that's fine. But I feel strongly that typing is nowhere near as effective as writing by hand. Typing is repetitive. Tap-tap-tap. It's electronic. The words are caged in the machine. This is not about speed or legibility. It's about expression and discovery. My handwriting is very poor. It doesn't matter.

    I started doing this, this morning. There’s things I want to write down that I was scared to because ‘what if I die, who might end up reading this?’ So I acknowledged the likely candidate for that job and treated the pages like a sort of advice manual for them (sometimes being a bit crude !). Now I’ve heard it shouldn’t necessarily be done that way. I also don’t want to clutter my place up with yet more stuff so maybe I should just chuck my writing out every month ?

    I always get to a point where I’m writing from a different perspective. Like I’m looking over my shoulder telling me what I need to be doing.
    I get introspective but from outside myself. I just let the pen tell me what I need to do next.
    I used to have to write two whole pages to get anything useful out on the third. Now I can take a blank page and by the last third I’m in the zone letting my subconscious figure me out. I need to start writing again.

      @sketchley Thanks for your response. The page measurements I gave you are a direct quote from her book "Living the Artist's Way" so, when you explained in your video that A5 was the English measurement, I was surprised and confused as that was misleading.
      Of course, one can adapt the paper size used to what works for them. Currently I'm writing on paper myself that is not quite as long as A4. But in your video, you are explaining Julia's way, from her book.
      I am not new to the MP, but am revisiting them after a long break and have just purchased Julia's latest book, which focuses on the Guidance.
      Overall, it is a clear and enjoyable, well explained video and getd to the point. Go well.

    • @sketchley
      @sketchley  8 месяцев назад +2

      The thing about morning pages, and this is what a lot of people don't seem to get, is that you're not in control. You're just letting the unconscious mind spew on to the page. Journaling of any kind, personal reflection, self expression, recording, etc. are all great practises, but they are not the same process as morning pages, and will yield different results. Just do what feels right for you and don't get hung up on whether you're doing it "right". Whatever way works for you is the right way.
