    The original colonizers of Iceland was actually mostly Norwegian men who went to Scotland and Ireland where they found women who they may or may not have "forcefully persuaded" to move to Iceland with them. 80% of Y chromosomes of Icelanders today are from Norway while 60% of mitochondrial DNA is of Celtic origin.

    Extra trivia:
    Iceland invasion: Britain also invaded the nearby Faroe Islands, building the islands' airport and (more importantly) introducing Cadbury's chocolate. The latter is still popular on the Faroes to this day.
    Grenada invasion: The increase in diplomatic signals traffic between the US and UK over Grenada, combined with NATO's "Able Archer '83" exercise, caused the USSR's government to fear an imminent Western nuclear strike. The period (which also included a nuclear false alarm and the downing of a civilian airliner) was arguably the most dangerous part of the entire Cold War.

    • @vinniechan
      @vinniechan 17 дней назад

      The British actually granted ppl in Faroe Islands more self rule than Denmark which laid the foundation of their subsequent self governance

  • @Psyk60
    @Psyk60 17 дней назад +7

    Another interesting thing about the invasion of Grenada is that it wasn't just the US that took part in the invasion. Some other Caribbean countries took part too, most of which also had Queen Elizabeth II as their head of state.
    So technically the Queen invaded herself.

    That letter is very funny to read as an Icelandic person, most of the errors seem to be because we use letters that weren't available on British printers, like Þ, æ, ö. But then the rest of the errors seem to usually be misplaced words, not spelling mistakes, honestly not sure how that happens.

    I'm a European and I can absolutely understand why Americans don't want to send that much money to Ukraine. Some dude working two jobs in Tennessee, just trying to feed his family can give two flying fucks about Ukraine. And just like if there was a war in, I don't know, Australia, I wouldn't want my money to be sent there because it is all the way across the world. How will life change for an average American when Putin takes part of Ukraine in the peace deal? It won't. Would it be a small victory for an evil man that doesn't accept independence of his neighbour? yes. But as I said, the life for an average American won't change, just like my life would not change if China took a piece of Australia for example. I do support Ukraine just to be clear, but I refuse to call someone who has nothing to do with the conflict fascist or a russian shill just because they want their taxes to be used at home.

      This is poor understanding of economics, though.
      Have you seen how currencies have been doing the past couple of years? Most small currencies have been failing, and the big ones have been stable. The US economy has been stable as well, compared to the rest of the world. Why is it that in unstable times, some countries can remain more stable than others? One of the big factors are military powers. Investors will think it's safer to invest in countries that have the ability - through military - to decide world affairs, and so in unstable times they will want to move their assets to those countries.
      In that sense, there isn't a better deal for the US - including it's tax payers - that the Ukraine war. As long as it weakens Russia. That's probably why the US hasn't done anything that would secure a Ukrainian victory, they're just doing enough to make sure Ukraine doesn't fall. That will increasingly weaken Russia's economy and military, it will gradually force China to align more towards the west(which we have been seeing this summer), and it will benefit the US and American citizens economically for decades to come.
      The amount the US is giving Ukraine is really nothing. It's wee on the ocean. Mostly it's just giving away old equiptment that was ready to be scrapped anyways. It's really the best economic deal the US could ever do.
      And what should angry people is that the US isn't doing more. That it hasn't been allowing strikes into Russia to disrupt forces, that it hasn't given away better equiptment and equiptment that could be used to secure a Ukrainian victory. The shocking part has been how little the US has done.

    • @danielkrcmar5395
      @danielkrcmar5395 18 дней назад +2

      @Nabium In theory, you're not wrong, but in practice, Russia's military is growing in strength. Their economy is more stable than almost all of Europe's, their alliances with BRICS and the Middle East are growing in strength, not weakening and their military industrial production has grown to outpace NATO combined for land equipment.
      The reason why the US hasn't done anything to cause a Ukrainian victory is that without starting WWIII it doesn't have the capacity or capability to beat Russia.

      @@danielkrcmar5395lol. BRICS can barely figure out how to meet once a year, russias economy is being held together with masking tape, and they can’t even invade their tiny neighbour. If America got seriously involved instead of just sending Ukraine its stuff destined for the scrap heap the war would be over in a month.

      First of all, the logic is not sound. If you ignore an aggressor, like cancer, it spreads. The nazis were planning on invading NYC by height of their reign after conquering more than an entire continent without much pushback. its a bad strategy.
      Second of all, if youre in a room with friends or at least colleague and one of them gets attacked, why wouldnt you want to help your friend and stop injustice?
